Chapter 1: Locker Rooms Rule!
“Running through checklist,” you stated to the fixed base operator near the runway, moving the yolk nestled between your legs slightly and getting a feel for the shaft, as you began reading off your gauges. “You hear that, control?”
“Copy,” a woman’s voice confirmed. “Proceed.”
“Looks like…” You did a small calculation in your head as your bird took off from the runway. You nodded at your calculations. “Acceleration’s a bit low after takeoff, gonna increase the RPM to the engines and adjust the nose, see if I can cut through some of this drag, over.”
“Roger that, Griffon. Just remember the redline on yours. Control on standby, over and out.”
Yeah, yeah, you thought. You weren’t that much of a rookie–you knew your machine’s limits. Now it was just a cruise job to the next waypoint. Smirking slightly, you decided to buzz over the radio to one of the other pilots.
“Hit the skies yet, chicken?” you smugly asked. “Or you having trouble getting off?”
“Shut it,” a gruff woman’s voice at the other end replied. “I’ve been waiting for you in the air for the last five minutes. What’s the holdup?”
You growled under your breath, but decided to disregard the other voice’s witty comeback. “Doesn’t matter, since I’m just gonna beat you at this. Like always.”
“You’re not getting me this time, Gilda,” the other voice reminded you. “Just a simple fly-by mission. No need to pull off any crazy stunts.”
“Oh, come on now, Rainbow Dash. You’re starting to sound boring,” you taunted, increasing the speed on your craft as it smoothy ascended altitude. “Is poor little Dashie scared of losing yet again? Are you really that chicken?”
“Nobody calls me chicken,” Dash replied. “Catch up and we’ll see what happens when we race.”
“Someone is finally growing a pair,” you chuckled, first hearing, then seeing your teammate come into view through your craft’s side-window. “Already beside ya, Dashie. You gonna be staring at my ass all day as I whoop yours, or are you gonna make things interesting?”
“Hard to miss your ass, tubby,” she snapped back. “But you can just kiss mine when I blow you out of the water.”
“Someone sure is cocky,” you took note, positioning your craft and drifting closer to Rainbow’s, until you could see her in the cockpit, her gas mask on and her long hair tied back in a loose ponytail. “But like the past has taught us, you’ll bite the dust like usual.”
“Shut up and count down,” she replied.
You laughed, feeling the rush of your craft soaring through the air overwhelm you. An addictive mix of adrenaline and endorphins that was practically irresistible to push farther. “How about the usual bet? Winner gets bragging rights, and the loser has to kiss the winner’s ass?”
“Fine, whatever. Let’s ride.”
You saw her plane tilt starboard and port a few times, as if she was testing her yolk.
“Mark,” you started, cracking your knuckles. “Set.” You tightened your grip on your stick and grinned smugly. “Go!”
You both took off, shooting across the sky like two drug-fueled stars howling across the sky, your engines whining like dogs in protest at the speed. There was no time for trash talk, only the brief, scant half-seconds of keeping your bird under control from the turbulence.
A noise crackled through your headset. “This is control, what’s going on up there? Cycles on your engines are going nuts!”
“Must be a glitch, we’re purring up here,” you quickly said, even that momentary distraction briefly pulling you away from your zone. Dash flew ahead of you, just barely, not even a five foot lead. With a small smirk, you twisted your plane just a hair, throwing a wing over Rainbow Dash’s tail.
Flying moves like those would’ve gotten both of you discharged from the jets on the spot, but luckily for you, control only cared about their position, not how you and Dash were flying the planes. Most they’d guess was that you both were flying in a tight formation. You smirked, tilting your plane just a bit more and tapping her tail end.
“The fuck?” Dash called out, her plane shaking from the impact. “What are you–”
You gave her another push in the right direction, tilting her nose upward. You heard the sputtering of an engine, and Dash let out another string of swears as her plane started to fall. She had recovered from that setback easily before crashing, but not in enough time to win your little bet.
“Eat fumes, Dashie!” you shouted, nose diving as well as well to beat out Dash’s plane in your little race. Both crafts were descending at dangerously fast altitudes, though you, nor Dash cared much for that. Only the thought of winning was on your minds, completing their mission disregarded.
“Griffon! Pegasus! Return back to the operating zone immediately!” command called out. “You’re leaving the target range!”
“Sorry–erm, you’re breaking up!” you shouted into your mouthpiece, finally at the limits of the plane. All it would take is just a bit more... “Can’t hear you!”
“But this is only a–”
You cut off communications to command, leaving you just with Dash to communicate with. “Come on, Dashie, that all you got?” you shouted, laughing as you slowly passed by her.
Rainbow growled as she pushed her bird to its limits. She tilted her nose downward and adjusted her sides slightly, cutting through the turbulent winds you both were facing like a hot knife through butter. “Hope you like the sight of my tail!” she shouted, pulling a decent clip ahead of you.
“I prefer something with a bit more junk in the trunk!” you replied, gritting your teeth hard as you attempted to decline for an extra bit of speed. “Good luck picking up dudes with that pathetic excuse for an ass. Lemme show you a perfect example of one once I pass you by!”
Dash quickly adjusted herself, moving in front of you and forcing you to slow down. As you tried to maneuver past, she quickly adjusted herself, blocking you yet again. “I thought you said you were gonna pass?” she mocked over coms.
“Why you little–”
Suddenly, the lights went off in your cockpit. The sky outside the window was black, and not even the glow of the buttons on your control panel was visible anymore.
End of Training Simulation
The words flashed on the black screen repeatedly, with the sound of the cockpit opening up following it. You groaned under your breath, knowing what was coming next.
“Dash! Gilda! Get your asses down here!” the commander shouted from outside your simulator. Rolling your eyes, you unclipped the redundant safety belts and removed your helmet, sweat rolling down your brow from the hotness of the headwear.
“Yeah, yeah, I’m coming!” you shouted to your superior, jumping out of the sim and onto the walkway below. Running down the walkway and skidding to a stop on the ground level, you were angry to see Dash already beat you to getting to the commander. As if getting beaten to the punch once already wasn’t bad enough... Going quickly by Dash’s side, both of you salute the commander, a very pissed off individual at the moment.
“Just what the hell were you two thinking?” she shouted in both of your faces, both of you attempting not to flinch at commander’s famous volume.
“Commander Spitfire, if I can only explain–” Dash began, but Spitfire cut her off with a wave of her hand.
Spitfire stared at both of you fliers with contempt, her fiery hair style reflecting her enraged attitude. “Oh, no need for an explanation. I can already clearly figure out that the two of you used some of the top notch fighter pilot simulators for your own childish amusement. A race, no less. For a fucking fly by mission! Something so simple even a brain dead rookie can pull it off!”
“With all due respect, ma’am,” Dash began, quickly looking towards you in a silent plea. “It’s a simulation. If we were flying real birds up there we’d never do shit like that.”
“You’re still wasting valuable military time. And more importantly, my time.” Spitfire crossed her eyes, scowling at the both of you with a glare that could melt steel. “This hasn’t been the first time you two idiots have pulled a stunt like this. Can’t you go five minutes without acting competitive?”
“If Dashie here didn’t suck at racing so much and wasn’t so fun to beat at, maybe,” you said with a grin, instantly falling when Spitfire’s eyes directed themselves on you.
“I totally won,” Dash replied with a smug smirk of her own that vanished the instant Spitfire gazed her way.
“Only cause the simulation ended, bitch,” you snap back through gritted teeth.
“Oh really?” Dash snapped back, turning to face you and cocking a thumb into a perky breast. “I could go double or nothing–you ain’t beating this gal!”
“Both of you, shut it,” Spitfire ordered in a voice so quiet and without emotion that you both snapped to attention immediately. Resting her hand on her forehead and closing her eyes with a frown, Spitfire said, “Both of you, head to the showers while I decide the punishment you’ll get for this bullshit. And if you think I’ll tolerate one more fucking stunt like this again, you can walk out the doors this instant. Is that understood?”
“Y-yes ma’am,” Dash said, saluting crisply.
“What she said,” you added on hastily, saluting as well.
Her left eye twitched behind her sunglasses; Spitfire sighed and turned her back to both of you, then marched off.
“Man… what a dweeb,” you muttered under your breath, letting out a breath you’d been holding in the entire time.
“Shut up, Gilda,” Dash said through her teeth. “Let’s just do as she said, and you can go fuck off afterwards.”
“Aww, little ol’ Dashie is a bit pissy,” you laughed, pulling Dash’s hat down so that it covered her eyes. “What’s your deal, dweeb? Scared Spitfire is gonna chew off your head?”
She slapped your hand away, clenching a fist tightly to her side as she pulled her hat back up. “How about the fact that I’m here to join the Wonderbolts, and pissing off the captain is pretty goddamn stupid?!” Dash threw her hands out to the side. “But when the hell did you care about shit I wanna do anyway? All you care about is pulling me down with dumb ideas–and you so totally lost it’s not even funny,” she quickly added, pulling the goggles on your head forward, then letting them slap your face.
Wincing at the pain slightly, your face went red as you readjusted your goggles. “You fuckin’ dweeb!” you shouted, grabbing at the top of Dash’s tank top in your fist and pulling her in closer as you raise your fist. “Don’t fuck with me,” you spat in her face, fist ready to smash in it. “Got it?”
“Go on! Swing, you bitch! See what happens!” Dash snarled, standing on her toes and leaning her face so close to yours your noses almost touched.
Glaring into her eyes with your nostrils flaring, you pushed her back and walked away without a word. You didn’t even bother to check over your shoulder to see if she was following you.
Sure enough, you hear her footsteps quickly catch up to your own as she briskly walked to you. “The hell’s your problem, anyway?” she asked. “We used to be cool, you know? I thought you’d have my back when we joined–now you won’t even give me the time of the day. Fuck, man.”
“What’s your deal?” you shot back, glaring at your rainbow-haired companion. “Ever since we joined up you’ve been nothing but a frickin’ dweeb. We barely go racing most of the time, you don’t take any risks, and you’re so afraid of the captain you practically shit yourself whenever she goes by.”
“What’d I say?!” Dash asked, stopping dead in her tracks and shoving your shoulder, looking downright furious. “When we were kids: What’d I always say to you?”
“‘I’m gonna join the Wonderbolts,’” you replied with a roll of your eyes.
“And now I’m here. A cadet for them, but as soon as I start to get a little something, as soon as I get a little ahead, you’re there to shit all over it.” Her expression died down a bit. She swallowed, clenching her fists so tight they quaked with emotion. “I thought we were tighter than that, Gilda.” With a shake of her head, she kept walking. “Guess not.”
“Hey, I’m tight! Ask any guy who I went out with!” you shouted back, catching up with Dash. “It’s you who’s changed! All you care about is flying this and training that! What happened to the chick who liked to have fun and race?”
“I still do,” she snapped back. “But there’s a time and a place for it now–we can’t just light up some smokes and race your dad’s wheels anymore. I’ve got fuckin’ goals here, Gilly...“ She ran a gloved hand over her brow. ”I had hoped you might get your head in the game here too, man.”
“Man, screw that shit. I barely even had to try to get in here. Why should I suddenly get my shit together for something that’s just so easy?” You flashed Dash a cocky grin, walking backwards in front of her in a confident stride. “Dash, we’re both too good for this crap. Both of us together can beat out all these dweebs in the skies any day of the week.”
She sighed, slowly nodding in agreement. “I know. We’re top dogs here–you and me both. But that doesn’t change the fact that, until we get our badges, we gotta keep our shit tight.” She rolled her eyes. “But who knew Spitfire was gonna be such a hardass? You have any idea how many posters I have of her back at mom’s?” Dash stuck out her tongue. “Don’t know if I can even look in my room now. Might just piss me off.”
“I remember that crush you had on her,” you reminded her while flicking her nose, sticking out your tongue. “How crushing was it when you realized your hero and wetdream turned out to be a drill sergeant asshole?”
“About as crushing as when you found out Soarin’ was gay,” Dash replied with a lazy point of her finger. “Besides, Spitfire totally couldn’t handle me. I’ve made my peace with it.”
“Dude, you’re a total pussy in the sack,” you snickered, turning forward as Dash’s face flustered red. “Heard it from Mac himself, along with any other dude you dated in high school. If you hooked up with Spitfire, she’d destroy you.”
“Fuck, Mac. For not talking, he sure opened his mouth a lot,” Dash huffed with a shake of her head. “That’s why I don’t deal with dudes anymore: they talk to the wrong people.”
“Like chicks are any better,” you pointed out, catching sight of the locker room doors. “Dude, you gotta go out more and get fucked every once in awhile. Maybe it’ll make you less of a bitch sometimes.”
“Yeah, ‘cause I was the bitch back there,” Dash curtly replied, pushing open the doors and stepping inside. She held it open for you. Once you were in, she flicked on the lights. “Empty house, at least.” Dash commented, giving a small glance around the locker room.
“Ain’t that a shame?” you asked, slipping in the room past Dash. “Gotta say, one of the best perks of this place is the co-ed locker rooms. Bet the guys appreciate that as well.”
“If you say so,” she said, stipping off her jacket and rolling her arm. “If anything, it makes talking to the boys outside of the showers even more awkward. They should know I’m not interested, but they’re still dropping shit when I talk to them.”
“Maybe cause they notice you checking them out.” You laughed, and unzipping your jacket that barely went to your midriff.
“No way,” Dash replied indifferently, taking off her cap and putting it on the bench. “Told you I ain’t havin that.” She briefly paused, clutching the dog-tags resting above her blue sports bra, then reverently took it off, gently placing them on top of her cap.
You said nothing, one of the only actions of hers you knew was off-limits to mock. It was one of the few times Dash had ever cried in front of you–the time Dash found out her dad wasn’t coming back home. He was a pretty cool dude too, so that helped keep your mouth shut.
She spared a glance at you.
“Taking it off anytime soon?” she asked, pulling off her gloves and throwing them to the side.
“Yeah, yeah, just thinking, dweeb,” you retorted, unclasping your belt buckle and undoing the button on your brown slacks.
“Thinking?” she repeated, undoing her belt and running a thumb under the barely-there denim shorts she wore. “I’ll believe it when I see it.” She kicked off her shoes, then stripped off her shorts, leaving her in blue-striped leggings and brown underwear.
