The dragons, the diamond dogs, and a difficult quest

After crash landing in some unknown land, Spyro slowly got up and dizzily surveyed his surroundings. His vision was blurry at first, but after it became more clear, he found himself alone in a huge crater.

"What happened?" he asked.

He looked up at the sky to see that it was getting dark, and the sun was setting. He flapped his wings and took flight, before perching on a boulder and looking to see that he was in the middle of a vast rocky terrain.

'Where in Skylands am I?' Spyro asked himself. 'Come to think of it, this doesn't feel like Skylands at all. I can feel some magical surge through the ground and in the air, but it's not Skyland's. In fact, it feels almost like the....' Spyro snapped back to reality as he looked down to see the stone that was with him was gone. "The stone! Where's the stone?"

He leapt off the rock, and looked around.

Spike ran as fast as he could, over to the spot where he saw one of the objects had crashed. As soon as he got there, he was amazed to see a huge crater, with something sparkling at the bottom. He carefully slid down to get a closer look, and could see something submerged in the dirt. He quickly dug it up and was awed to see a beautiful, sparkling stone.

"Wow!" he gasped as he picked up the stone. It was lavender in color, in the shape of an oval, and when he turned it on its side, it looked almost as thin as a plate.

"Well, what have we here?" a raspy voice called out, startling Spike, nearly causing him to drop the stone.

Spike looked up to see several eyes, staring down at him.

"It's the little dragon!" another raspy voice said, only deeper.

Spike instantly recognized the voices.

"Diamond Dogs!" he shouted.

The leader of the dogs, Rover, jumped as he landed in front of the dragon, cackling. "We're flattered you remember us, dragon."

"What do you guys want?" Spike asked, hiding the stone behind his back.

"We hear big noise!" Rover replied, raspily. "Go BOOM! We came to see what the noise was, and we find....YOU!"

"Well, if you guys want to know," Spike began. "It wasn't me!"

Another Diamond Dog, Fido, jumped down and towered over Spike as he asked, "If it wasn't you. Then what was it?"

"It was....." Spike started to sweat as he tried to come up with an excuse.

Rover then noticed something sparkling behind Spike's back. "What's that behind your back?" he asked.

Spike panicked as he tried to keep the stone concealed, and replied, "Nothing! There's nothing at all!"

"Liar!" the third Diamond Dog, Spot, shouted as he jumped down in the crater behind Spike. He tried to grab the stone, but Spike held it with all his strength. "Give it to us!"

"NO!" Spike cried, as he struggled to pull the stone back.

"Let go!" Spot growled.

"NO! You let go!" Spike replied, before he breathed fire and singed the dog in the face, forcing him to release his grip on the stone.

Spike tried to run with the stone, but he was blocked by the bigger dogs, Rover and Fido.

Rover tried to grab him, but Spike dove under his legs as he climbed out of the crater, with Fido running after him. Spike quickly saw a huge boulder above him and the dogs, and quickly loosened the smaller rocks that were supporting it, causing them to slide down and hit the dogs on the head. With a roar, the boulder came tumbling down and buried the dogs beneath the rubble. Spike climbed his way out, and he quickly looked back to see the three dogs poking their way out, rubbing their heads from the rocks, before they stared angrily at Spike. Then, Rover pulled out a small whistle and blew it.

Not waiting to find out what would happen Spike quickly ran for his life, while hearing Rover howling, "Seize the dragon!"

He looked behind him and saw several armored dogs, chasing him.

"HELP!" he screamed, as he kept on running for his life.

Spyro hadn't gone very far, when he heard a scream, and quickly sprang into action, flapping his wings, heading straight toward the source. He slowly came to a stop on a cliff and looking down saw Spike, being chased by a pack of enormous armored dogs, with huge gorilla like arms.

The dogs kept on chasing the little dragon, until they got him cornered.

"Leave me alone!" Spike cried, as he tried to breathe fire on the dogs, but only a small puff of green smoke escape his mouth.

The dogs broke out into a fit of laughter, before they resumed advancing on the little dragon. They stopped abruptly when Spyro breathed a bigger stream of fire in front of them. The dogs looked up as he flew down and got in between them and Spike.

"Back off!" Spyro growled. "The kid wants you guys to leave."

The dogs looked at each other before they growled at Spyro and slowly crept towards him.

"Trust me when I say this," Spyro began. "You don't want do this."

One of the armored dogs made the first move as he pounced after Spyro, only to be knocked back when the dragon's horns glowed in a fiery aura and he rammed his head into the dog.

"Okay! You asked for it!" With that, the fire in Spyro's mouth lit up as he took his battle stance. "I'm all fired up!"

The dogs all charged in an attempt to tackle the dragon, but Spyro quickly let out a blast of fire from his mouth that scorched the dogs on parts of their bodies that aren't covered by their armor. This made the dogs even madder as they pulled out several spears, swords, maces, axes, and hammers before lunging towards the dragon. One dog swung his sword, to which Spyro ducked his head down, narrowly evading the strike from the weapon. Then Spyro quickly stepped forward, bringing his head beneath the dog's legs, flipped the dog in the air. With a howl it fell back down and landed on more of its comrades.

Then, another dog came charging with both a hammer and a shield in his hands, as he was about to attack Spyro. But just as the dog swung his hammer down, the cunning purple dragon quickly slid along the floor, beneath the dog, horn first. Then, with his horns surrounded in another fiery aura, Spyro headbutted the dog from behind, causing him to stumble. After regaining his balance and focus, the dog turned around, only for Spyro to somersault, striking his tail on the dog's helmet, forcing it down, causing it to become stuck on the dog's head. As the dog struggled to get his helmet unstuck, several more dogs charged at Spyro with their spears aiming at the dragon, but they missed and accidentally stabbed their comrade in the butt, causing him to jump up with a howl.

Meanwhile, Spike was hiding behind a boulder during the entire battle, and watched in amazement at how a dragon like Spyro, about the size of an average pony, couldfight off a whole pack of armored dogs. Truly, he's the type of dragon who lacks in size, makes up for in strength and ferocity.

A dog tried to stab Spyro with a spear, but Spyro was quick to evade as he sidestep before he lunged forward and grabbed a hold of it in his mouth and lashed his tail at the dog's face, forcing the dog to let go. Two dogs came running towards Spyro with maces drawn, but Spyro quickly ducked as they both swung their maces and accidentally hit each other on the head, knocking them both in a senseless daze. The two dogs both stumbled, dizzily, waving their maces around, hitting the other dogs on the heads, noses, toes, tails, and any other body parts that are not protected by the armored.

The battle kept going on as Spyro evaded more of the armored dogs' attacks, while at the same time, counterattacked their every move. Spyro eventually let out another powerful stream of fire at the dogs. Despite wearing protective armors, they still managed to find their rump getting scorched, causing them to yelp in pain as they jumped up in the air. One of the dogs jumped onto Spyro's back and tried to hold him down, only for the dragon to flap his wings and took to the air, as he flew higher and higher, almost touching the stratosphere, before he dived back down towards the ground, picking up speed as he and the dog both got closer, until finally at the last moment, he blasted a huge explosive fireball at the dogs, and landed hard on the ground, as a tailwind came after him, spreading the surrounding flames, creating a strong fiery shock wave that sent all the armored dogs flying, even the one on his back.

The armored dogs finally had enough as they ran away, yelping.

Spyro breathed heavily, before he turned back and checked on the baby dragon he was protecting.

"Hey kid," he called. "You alright?"

"Y-Yeah," Spike shyly replies, as he slowly came out of his hiding place to face the dragon before him. "That.....was....AWESOME!" With that, Spike walked around the older dragon, as he waved his arms around. "The way you fought off those dogs! Wow! I've never seen another dragon fight like that before! Heck! I never knew dragons can fight like that before! You were like BOOM! POW! RAWR! And those dogs are like OOF! OW! MAMA! My leg! You are......!" With that, Spike's face was scrunched up as he whispered, "So awesome!"

Spike slowly walked up and gave Spyro a hug.

"No problem kid." Spyro smiled, before he broke the hug. "All in a day's work." Spike raised his eyebrow in confusion at this statement. "Anyway, it's kinda late. Shouldn't you be back home by now?" Spyro asked.

"Well, I was on my home, when I was attacked by those dogs," Spike answered, waving his claws in expression.

"I see. Though, not to sound suspicious or anything, but what where you doing out here in the first place?"

"You may not believe it, but there was this flying object that came out of the sky, not too long ago. It split into two and crash landed in this place. So I came here to investigate."

"You came here to investigate?" Spyro inquired, before noticing the stone in behind Spike's back. "Hey! Where'd you get that?"

"What? This?" Spike brought the stone out and showed it to the older dragon. "I just found it in a crater that's not too far from here. This is also the reason why those dogs attacked me."

"May I see it, please?"

"Sure," Spike said, handing the stone over to Spyro, who looked at it carefully.

"Yep, this is the one," Spyro said out loud.

"What?" Spike began to inquire. "Do you know something about that stone?"

Before Spyro could answer, the two dragons felt the ground shaking violently. Not waiting to find out, Spyro began, "How about we just get the heck out of here first?"

"Don't have to tell me twice."

With that, Spike got onto Spyro's back as he flapped his wings and they took flight.

The two dragons later landed in a spot where Spike's wagon was rested. The little dragon was relieved to see that all the gems he had collected were still there.

"I'm glad to make it out alive to see you my sweets!" He exclaimed happily at his gems.

"Huh?" Spyro said confused.

"Um, nothing!" Spike quickly played it cool, as he turned around to face the dragon. "Thanks again for saving me. My name's Spike." Spike extended his claw.

"Nice to meet you Spike." Spyro replied, tucking the stone away under his wings, before shaking Spike's claw. "I'm Spyro."

"Cool name."

"Thanks." Spyro then brought the stone out. "Anyway, to answer your question; I honestly don't know much about this stone. But I do know that it holds very powerful magic inside."

"Wow! That's something Twilight would be interested in."

"Who's Twilight?"

Spike looked at the dragon incredulously. "You don't know her?"

"No," Spyro replied. "Should I?"

"I take it then that you're not from around here."

"Yeah. Let's just say I just flew in." Spyro replied, "Still, who is she?"

"She's my friend. Well more like my big sister. Plus she's a princess. And magic's her specialty. If there's any pony I know who knows alot about magic, it's Twilight herself."

"Well then, perhaps she can-Wait a minute!" Spyro quickly stopped himself as he looked at Spike in confusion. "Any pony? This Twilight....is she....a....pony?"

"Well, more of an alicorn to be precise. But yeah."

"And she's your....big sister?"

"She's kinda like a big sister to me. I mean we are friends and all, but together with her and some other ponies, we're all like a family. Is that a problem?"

"No, I mean.....you're friends with ponies?"

"I...um... Yes?" Spike squeaked.

There was an awkward silence between the two dragons, as Spyro kept on staring at Spike in bewilderment. Finally, Spyro broke the silence as he exclaimed, "That's cool! I'm glad I'm not the only dragon to have ponies for friends."

"You too?"

"Well, some of my friends are ponies, or equine related. And some of them are half-ponies. But hey, I've made lots of friends from other races; ponies, griffons, elves, gremlins, fishmen, and other dragons. And we still get along just fine."

"WOW!" Spike gasped. "Now I'm really jealous of you."

Then, Spyro quickly remembered something. "Speaking of friends!" With a desperate look written on his face, Spyro looked around as he cried frantically, "Sparx? Where are you?!" Then, he turned his head to Spike and grabbed the little dragon by the shoulders and frantically asked, "Have you by any chance seen someone with a glowing dragonfly around?"

Spike, still surprised by Spyro's sudden change of expression, hesitantly answered,"Uh, no?"

"Arrgh!" Spyro groaned in frustration, as he dropped Spike to the ground and continued scanning the area. "Sparx?" He called out frantically. "Where are you? Can you hear me?"

Spike rubbed his head, while looking at the distraught dragon. "Um, Spyro? Did you lose a pet or something?"

Upon hearing that, Spyro's eyes became white, his scales darkened, as the fire in his mouth glowed dark, and his entire body emitted a dark aura before he turned to face the baby dragon and roared, "SPARX IS NOT A PET!!"

Spike screamed as he curled himself up into a ball and cried, "I'm sorry! Please don't hurt me!"

Spyro looked at the quivering form of the baby dragon. He felt a sudden pang of guilt, as the dark aura surrounding him dissipitated.

"I'm sorry," he sighed. "But you're wrong. Sparx's not a pet. He's my best friend. And to top it off, he's my brother."

"What?" Spike raised his eyebrow. "Your brother? How can the two of you be brothers?"

"It's an adoptive relationship," Spyro replied. "But that's not important right now. I have to find him. No telling what kind of trouble he's in right now."

"What happened to him?"

"He was kidnapped."

"What?!" Spike gasped. "Why?"

"I wish I knew." Spyro turned and started walking away. "But when I get my claws on the kidnapper, I'll be getting some answers."

"But don't you even know where they are?"

Spyro paused for a moment, before he turned to look at Spike again. "No," he answered. "I don't. But I know they couldn't have gone far."

"How do you know?" Spike asked.

Spyro held the stone up for Spike to see as he continued, "This thing was from the kidnapper. That guy's really tough with magic. And it's all because of this little stone. Without it, I doubt the kidnapper could ever make it to the other side of the world by now."

Spyro started spreading his wings out. "So if you'll excuse me Spike. I gotta get going." With a flap, Spyro was quickly airborned. "Take care kid."

"Wait!" Spyro hadn't gone very far when Spile grabbed ahold of his tail, stopping him.

"What?" Spyro asked, starting to get impatient. "Do you need me to walk you home?"

"No it's not that," Spike began. "Let me help you."

Spyro slowly descended back to the ground.

"What?" He asked, turning to look at the baby dragon.

"Did I stuttered?" Spike asked again. "I said I want to help!"

Spyro gave a confused look, before sighing. "I appreciate the offer, Spike. But this my problem. I have to deal with it. I can't just drag you into it."

"Maybe it is your problem," Spike said. "But like Twilight once said, 'Two heads are better than one.'"he smiled. "Plus, you looked like you're in need of a guide."

Spyro scratched his head before replying,"You got a point."

"Well lucky you!" Spike exclaimed. "Cause you've got a guide, right here!" He said, while smiling proudly and pointing at himself.

Spyro once again, looked at Spike confusingly. Spike, having caught on to the dragon's expression, explained, "Hey! Just because I'm a small baby dragon, doesn't mean I can't be much of a help. Besides, It's the least I can do, after you've saved me from the Diamond Dog.

"....."

"I may not be a hero. Or a dragonfly rescuer. But I do have a lot of friends all over Equestria. And with their help, we can find your brother."

Spyros pondered for a moment, before replying, "Ok. Guess there's no stopping ya."

"Great!" Spike interrupted. "I guess we're all set then."

"So, how do we begin?" Spyro asked.

The two dragons pondered for a moment.

"I know! Let's....." Spike was interrupted when he let out a yawn, resulting in Spyro to yawn as well.

"How about we head back to Ponyville for some shut eyes?" Spike muttered.

"But Sparx," Spyro said.

"Don't worry Spyro," Spike began as he walked over to pull his wagon by the handle. "We'll look for him in the morning. We can't find him if we're both too tired to look."

Spyro was about to protest, when he let out another yawn.

"Ok fine," he muttered in defeat. "But where do I sleep?"

"Let's head back to the Friendship Castle!" Spike exclaimed, while pulling his wagon. "You can bunk there!"

And so, the two dragons hurried back to Ponyville.
