Chapters There were three ponies in the sterile room, white-washed and yet vaguely gloomy. Two mares and a colt. Shining Armor, the colt, tried to sit still on the hospital bed but found it uncomfortable to keep his hind legs shut closed together. He wasn't having a good time. He had turned fourteen just three months prior, and squirmed slightly as he felt a peculiar pain all throughout his torso. He was a teenager.
"So I understand this isn't a routine checkup?" said the nurse, one of the mares, who was half-busy with a dull pencil she had found captivating at the moment. Her light-brown mane shined under the lights of the hospital room.
The nurse was about ten years younger than Twilight Velvet, the second mare, and indeed Velvet eyed the nurse with a glint of envy. I bet she doesn't even have a boyfriend. I remember when I didn't. Feels like ages ago. Velvet hadn't grown crow's feet yet, but she was well on her way to that point in her life. She was thirty-nine. Her fortieth birthday loomed on the horizon. Her friends liked to tease her about it, but she found none of it funny. "Well, no, I wanted to see a professional about my son here—"
"I think I can speak for myself, mom." Shining didn't meet either of their gazes. His voice was unbearably soft, feeble, reserved for a boy of his age and stature. Velvet almost couldn't make out the words at first.
"Yes, I know that, sweetie, but I brought you here, and I think it's important that the nice nurse and I get on equal terms," she replied, then turned to the bored nurse. "It isn't an emergency or anything, in case you were wondering."
"Oh, I wasn't assuming that." The nurse dropped the pencil with her magic absentmindedly. "Doctor Bloodmoney gets called in for more serious appointments. Although..." She cocked an eyebrow. "How serious is this, exactly?"
Velvet sucked on her upper lip before answering with: "Well, my son has been having difficulties with his, um..."
"You can say it, mom," Shining said bitterly. "I think I've been embarrassed enough already."
Not taking her eyes off the nurse, Velvet nevertheless acknowledged Shining's approval. "My son has been hurting a great deal in his—" choking for a moment before continuing— "lower region. He has had to take off a few days from school—not too many, but a considerable amount—and his father and I have been getting worried. So he told us about what hurts him, or at least gave us a general idea."
The nurse's mouth gaped, but she didn't say anything for a few seconds. Then she said in a quick instant, "Oh! I think I know what you're referring to, Twilight Velvet. I can assure you, if it's what is most likely the case, you have not much to worry about. But I do need you out of the room while I inspect Shining's area of pain." Her attention had been completely diverted to the appointment now.
Shining's eyes widened. "Uh, inspect me?"
"Oh yes," the nurse replied. "It won't take long. but I'm afraid Velvet will have to leave the room."
Velvet's head turned a tad and her mouth made nearly an 'O' shape. Is she going to put her hooves on my boy? But then again, this might well be necessary. Ugh... She dared not say a word for a time. She felt trapped in time. Frozen.
Shining gave his mother an odd look. "Uhh, mom?"
Whatever it was, Velvet snapped out of it with a blink of her eyes. "Oh, yes, right. I will do that." She turned and opened the door with her magic, turning back at the two momentarily. "Don't take too long now."
"I'll let you know when you can come back in," the nurse said gently.
After that final word, Velvet stepped out into the grey hallway and closed the door unceremoniously behind her. She let some hot air out of her lungs and made her way to the lobby. I could finish that one issue of "Trotter's Digest," I suppose.
Shining was stuck in an uncomfortable scenario, but he couldn't deny himself the fact that the nurse was quite pretty. Her mane seemed to be long and flowing, but it was kept in a bun in the way most nurses wore their manes during work. She also had a delicate face that appeared as though it had been sculpted by a divine creator over the course of centuries, with subtle curves and bumps; it was the kind of face teddy bears wished they possessed. Her eyes were a hypnotic blue, as calming as the sky on a fine day.
Still, Shining felt disturbed on the inside, like something wasn't sitting right. I wish she wouldn't look at me like that. He felt so small compared to her, despite being about the same height in actuality.
And, of course, the nurse did look at him in 'that' way. She must've known it, too, but she would never say. She simply inched her way over to Shining's side with a serene grin. "Now, I'm going to need you to lie on your back, if you wouldn't mind too much. I need you in that position to get a good reading on your condition." She seemed so innocent.
Shining gulped. "My condition? What exactly is that?"
The nurse appeared unfazed. "Well, as we have to check your heart and lungs by feeling up your chest and back, I'll need to check your lower region to come to a conclusion about it." She then sniffed in a way that Shining found adorable. "It's standard procedure."
A couple seconds passed until it hit Shining. "Oh, my..." His ears drooped. "Right..."
"Don't worry," the nurse said. "We won't get accurate results if you're too stressed out. I'll try to be gentle about it." She fluttered her eyelashes in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment, and Shining felt his cheeks get warmer than he'd like.
"Okay, nurse." Shining then swung his hind legs up onto the bed and turned his torso so that his head would rest on the somewhat stiff pillow. "I think I trust you enough. I mean, even though you're a girl..."
The nurse giggled as though Shining had made a joke. "If I wasn't a girl you would feel more comfortable?"
"Well, I mean—" shutting his eyes in frustration— "I don't know! I've never had this done to me before. I'm not even quite sure what 'it' is!" Without thinking, Shining curled up his forelegs close to his barreled chest and spread his hind legs in the same way he would have if he was reading a good comic book in his bedroom. The context here was quite different. "I didn't even wanna tell my parents about it for a long time. And good grief if my sister found out. Twily would be scarred for life or something, and I can't deal with that sort of thing."
Listening to Shining, the nurse pulled out a metal step on the slimmer side of the bed, where the colt's hind legs were. "Hmm," she uttered in mild interest. "I assure you, Shining, what you're experiencing right now is nothing special for a colt your age." A thought came to her and she paused. "How old are you? Thirteen, fourteen?"
"F-fourteen, yeah." Shining gazed at the nurse between his legs, donning a nervous smile. His eyes were locked on hers. What the heck is she gonna do...? He tried desperately to not think about anything dirty. Anything that might expose him.
It didn't take long, though.
The nurse lifted a rather innocuous-looking feather from the nearby shelf with her magic and moved towards Shining's groin. His member was still in its sheath, although the poor colt was already having a hard time keeping it in. The nurse said, almost quickly, "Now, I'm wondering, are your reproductive organs working up to snuff?" "My r-right one." Shining would have felt utterly ashamed in any other situation, but instead he felt a small wave of warmth flow over his heart. I can't believe she wants to help me! And she's pretty! He opened his hind legs a little wider.
Humming to herself, the nurse took out a washcloth from the shelf and turned on the room's sink. She set it to 'hot' and waited a bit before dipping the cloth in the running water. With her magic she squeezed the cloth of excess fluid and then lifted it towards Shining's balls. "Now, let me know if this hurts. I'm going to massage it, and it might feel weird at first." The nurse gently pressed the warm cloth against Shining's scrotum, and the colt let out a low moan. "Feel anything?"

Twilight Velvet had stopped focusing on the words a while back. Her eyelids felt heavy, and the magazine in her hooves felt weirdly heavy too. I could have sworn she said they wouldn't take long... She put the issue of "Trotter's Digest" aside and rubbed her eyes tiredly. She was the only one waiting in the lobby. It was a slow day.
She felt old. Terribly old. Time swerved around her aging form. On the other hoof, Shining was on his way to becoming a lively stallion in due time. High school was tough for him, as it was for most colts, and the fact that he had a bookish side he didn't bother to hide also didn't help his case. He didn't have the body of a bookworm, though, unlike his sister. Little Twilight Sparkle appeared meek, even for a filly her age, but Velvet knew that Shining would turn out differently. It was only a matter of time.
The door in the hallway creaked open, and the nurse poked her head out. "You can come back in, Mrs. Velvet."
"Oh," Velvet said quietly to herself, "thank goodness." She got out of her seat and trotted over to the room where Shining was. It was much brighter in there than in the lobby, but Velvet didn't mind so long as she didn't have to stay there much longer.
When Velvet entered, she saw that Shining was sitting upright like before, but something about him seemed different. He had this blank look on his face, although Velvet couldn't figure out the reason. Shining then turned his head, his lips curling upward. "Hi, mom. We've figured out what's wrong with me. Isn't that good news?"
"Have you now?" Velvet cocked her head quizzically. "You sound like there wasn't much to it."
"Oh, there wasn't," the nurse spoke up. "It's really quite simple, the thing your son has. You see—" clearing her throat— "at Shining's age, colts tend to experience a lot of—well... sexual awakening. During puberty there is this rush of hormones, and for colts especially it really takes a toll on the reproductive organs. Some handle it better than others. Shining here is just going through a great amount of sexual tension."
"'Sexual tension'?" Velvet cocked her eyebrow.
"Within himself," the nurse said coolly. "His loins have gone from zero to a hundred over the past couple of years, and he's still adjusting to this newfound sexual energy. Perfectly natural for a boy of his age, of course."
Velvet stood still, and her brow furrowed. "'Perfectly natural'..."
Shining appeared to get out of his funk before saying, "See, mom? Nothing too serious." His smile didn't go away.
Defeated, Velvet didn't say anything for a while. I figured this would happen eventually. Now I have to deal with it.
Author's Note
The meat of the story has yet to come, I'm afraid. I plan for this thing to total about 12,000 words by the time I'm done with it. Expect a few more chapters, and for the Dark tag to get put to decent use.
Shining Armor's eyelids felt especially heavy in the morning. English class would end soon, but not soon enough. The classroom was quaint, and there were only a little over a dozen students contained within; Shining sat in the second row from the front, close enough to get a good look at the teacher—for she was indeed worth looking at—but just far enough away from the peak of attention, that being the first row. So really, the situation could have been much worse than it was.
The teacher in question, Miss Sonnet, was a down-to-earth mare in her mid-thirties who, despite her apparent attempts to appear homely to the students, had garnered the one-sided affection of many a colt. Shining was one of them. As he sat in his ancient wooden chair, which no doubt had gone through a great number of rumps over the years, his mind shifted between gazing at Miss Sonnet, dressed in her surprisingly cute bow tie and horn-rimmed glasses, and sort of tapping the words of the book on his desk with his eyes. Why does this have to be so boring? I was expecting... I don't even know, but it should've been better than this! Shining, being a colt of his age, suffered a tendency to not focus on any particular thing for as long as he ought to have.
"Now class," the teacher coughed, "can anypony tell me about the meaning of the rose that the titular character has been wearing in her mane throughout the most recent chapter? I assume you've read it, it's quite the page-turner." Miss Sonnet wiggled her eyebrows in a suggestive manner at the colts in the front row, who were most definitely paying attention, if for the wrong reasons. "Ah, the scene where Lady Chrysanthemum finally gains the courage to spend her first night with the dashing but troubled Duke Bellington, what a sequence! Could you not sense the passion as the two consummated their love in the chapter's climax?"
A few colts in the room raised their hooves, begging to be given attention like dogs, but Miss Sonnet only snorted. "Any fillies in the class who feel they want to contribute to the discussion?"
Moments passed by painfully. No takers. But then a funny-looking filly who sat only a couple seats away from Shining raised her right hoof with great shyness. Her legs were too stocky, and her glasses were too big for her snout; Shining never had a fantasy about her. The filly also had braces on her otherwise whitened teeth, but some found this attractive. "U-Um, yes, well, the love scene was pretty nice. And I noticed that Chrys-anthemum—" for this filly said 'Chrys-' like 'Christ' without the 'T' at the end— "removed the rose from her mane when she and Bellington started the... thingy." Her cheeks took on a pinkish hue.
Some of the students giggled. Miss Sonnet did not. She did, however, don a knowing smile. "Ah, and what do you think that means?"
"It could mean—um, that the rose represented...?" The filly continued, but Shining had already begun to edit out her voice from the movie that was his mind's eye. He glanced down at his copy of the book, which was titled 'Lady Chrysanthemum's Lover.' It was a very old novel, written by a dirty old stallion who had written it over the course of several lonesome weekends to get his own rocks off. But since the dirty old stallion was good with prose, the novel was picked up by semi-intelligent readers who also ended up getting their rocks off to it. So, from this giant masturbatory session, the book became often cited as a literary classic. Maybe it was? Who knew? Who really cared?
Shining scanned through several passages he found salvageable, and incidentally most of these passages came from the erotic scenes he had so far discovered in the book's dusty pages. The talking parts, of which there were many, were unforgivably dull and stuffy. The characters spoke too much of their emotions, as if unaware of how banal these things were. Lady Chrysanthemum? Chrys-an-the-mum? The mum? The mom? Is she a mom? I can't remember. Ugh, I wonder if Twily would know. The consideration left him about as quickly as it had arrived. No, come on, she's way too young for this sort of thing. Little Twilight Sparkle was ten years old. She would eventually find out about 'Lady Chrysanthemum's Lover' and enjoy it greatly, but she would never admit that to anypony.
It was for the best.
As Miss Sonnet and the kids around him conversed, keeping their attention off of him, Shining got lost in a particularly engrossing scene from the third chapter in spite of his overall distaste for the novel. The character of Duke Bellington was fascinating to the nerdy colt, since he was a firmly muscled and yet soft-spoken stallion who could have bedded any mare he wanted, and yet at the end of the day he had set his sights on a single mare he found to be so captivating in both body and personality that he could no longer hold back his lust for her after a time. The sentiment was naturally reciprocated.
Shining rubbed his chin in a moment of contemplation. I wonder, will I ever find that special somepony? Maybe if she'd like me back, but what're the chances of that happening? Unless I joined the Royal Guard...
"Shining Armor?" Miss Sonnet spoke kindly out of the fog of the colt's distraction.
"Uhh, yes, ma'am?" he replied, now looking up, the beam between his eyes and the book broken.
Miss Sonnet didn't appear irked. She simply said, "I understand it's a great book, but there are times for getting lost in it, and right now I need you to be part of the discussion."
"O-Oh, yeah," Shining said, letting out a sheepish chuckle. "Sorry."
None of the students around him laughed out loud, but devilish grins did manifest on their pubescent faces.
It wasn't the best of days; it wasn't the worst of days.
The breaks between classes were all too brief. The lunch breaks felt even more unjustly abridged, but then again they could never have lasted too long for the students. Lunch was split into three half-hour sections throughout the school day, and Shining got stuck with the first one. He was now at his locker, identical to the vast majority of its brethren, rummaging through the debris of his backpack as if digging for treasure. Did Mom forget to pack my lunch? Oh no...
Shining felt some sweat form on his brow, but this was to be over nothing; his shiny box of assorted goods was buried deep at the bottom of his backpack. It was like a tin container for the ashes of the recently deceased, and was frankly too small, but Shining had never asked for a better one. Twilight Velvet had given it to him for his twelfth birthday, so it possessed some sentimental value.
An alarming knock came upon the locker next to Shining's and the colt jumped with a start. He nearly banged his head on the top of his locker. With a grunt he reared his head to see who the culprit was.
Shining's eyes met those of Willow Peak, a pudgy colt who looked like he could have been a member of the school's buckball team, and in fact he was trying out for a rookie position. The two colts stared at each other for what may have been a second too long. Then Shining said, "Hey, Willow." His eyes squinted. "Aren't you supposed to be in biology class right now?"
"Ah, the good ol' instructor turned out to be sick!" he replied in a somewhat raspy voice. "Pretty crazy, eh? Never seems to happen often enough. Darn teachers always doing their jobs and such."
"Shouldn't there be a substitute or something?"
"Meh," Willow blurted out. "The subs don't care. They're not gettin' paid enough for that."
The two colts started walking side by side down the hallway, which at this hour wasn't crowded enough to count as a life-threatening environment. Shining stood nearly a shoulder taller than Willow, but the latter seemed to be made of pretty dense material. Shining's beloved lunchbox was enveloped in his magic.
"So how're the tryouts going, huh?" Shining said, leaning in a tad.
"Ah well, ya know, it's a tough process. All these colts, half of 'em don't even understand how to do basic arithmetic, eh? I ain't even sure where they get these clowns from. Heck, I'm surprised you're not tryin' out for the team."
"Well, yeah, I mean..." Shining cleared his throat. "I've been busy. With stuff. Really important stuff."
As they passed down the hallway, a geeky colt turned from his locker and caught a glimpse of Shining. "Hey Shining, when're we good for that card game again? The one with the wizards and dragons?"
"Saturday night at nine, my dude!" Shining then immediately turned back to Willow. "As I said, important stuff."
"Uh-huh," Willow said, his eyebrow quirking, "like tryin' to get with that one filly? Ya know, what's 'er name."
Before Shining could respond, they came to the nearest opening to the school cafeteria. The first lunch break was starting, and students entered and got thick plastic trays that were almost meant for prisoners. It wasn't a busy scene yet, but it wouldn't take long for the place to become overcrowded and overheated. Shining took in the relative emptiness of the cafeteria in this pre-invasion state.
But then of course, as its occurrence was inevitable and essentially predestined, his eyes spotted her . Sitting at the far side of the cafeteria, taking up one end of a long table with several of her supposed friends, was Cadance. She was a junior, two years older than Shining, and she was a special sight to behold. She wore her flowing mane in a ponytail, and her legs must have been constructed to be as appealing as possible; she was also, for reasons nopony could explain, an alicorn. Really, though, the combination of it all made Cadance appear to be a swan that painters would obsess over, which ignited a certain passion in Shining's loins.
His eyes widened, and he found he still couldn't come up with a reply. Why does this keep happening to me?
"Come on, Shining," Willow said, nudging his friend's side, "ya gotta ask 'er out!"
"N-No." Shining stepped into the cafeteria, trying to avoid gazing at Cadance. "She wouldn't like me."
Willow followed him, determined as ever. "Come on . You're strong, you're awkward, you're into geeky stuff..."
"I think only one of those was a compliment."
"But I bet she likes all those things in a guy!" Willow tried whispering, but it wasn't working out for him. "She seems like the kinda girl to prey on the shy ones who're secretly hunks, and ya meet those requirements."
Shining sat down at an empty table, as far away from Cadance as could be. He put down his lunchbox and cracked it open absentmindedly. "I don't think so. And besides, I'm a freshman. If a colt who's a junior or senior goes after a filly who's a freshman, it's creepy, but if a filly who's a junior or senior goes after a colt who's a freshman—well, that never happens, does it?"
Willow grumbled and went to get in line for his meal. Shining sat by himself and took out a sandwich wrapped in plastic. He unpacked the sandwich and lifted it to his lips with his hooves, his mind already wandering to a place even he couldn't understand. Ah, peanut butter and jelly. Penis butter and jelly?
The train screamed as it came to a stop at the station. It was a sunny day, although the weather was like that on most days anyway. Twilight Velvet never liked sunny weather that much; she had always preferred clouds and mild temperature. She was waiting with little Twilight at her side, the filly sticking close to her mother.
"It's a shame you have to be away for the whole weekend," Velvet said to Night Light, her husband.
"I know, dear, but when business calls, I have no choice but to answer it," he replied. Night had already turned forty, and like most stallions he handled the milestone with grace. He was a good-looking stallion, especially for his age, although he came off as unassuming to his coworkers due to his generally laid-back nature. He was a businesspony, though he rarely bothered to specify what kind.
Shining stood next to Twilight, towering over the downcast filly. He glanced sideways at Velvet, who appeared stern. Velvet didn't reciprocate this glance; she had difficulty with looking at her son straight in the eye as of late.
"Hmm," Velvet murmured. "Just make sure to send us a letter while you're in Trottingham. I always love to read what you write." She took a step forward and nuzzled Night's cheek with much affection.
Night smiled and said softly enough so that little Twilight couldn't hear, "And I'm always eager to read you , dear."
They giggled to each other, and while Twilight didn't hear what her father said, Shining did , and a very uncomfortable image began to form in his head. His face screwed up and he cocked his head to the side a little.
In a flash Night picked up his bags with his magic and beamed at his children. "Bye, kids!"
"Bye, Dad!" they both said simultaneously. Twilight's voice stuck out as it was quite squeaky.
Night then winked at Shining. "You take good care of your sister now, Shining!"
"Sure thing, Pop!" The colt smiled widely and awkwardly at his father. The gesture was endearing enough.
As ponies started to board the train, Night turned to join them. Velvet gazed longingly at her husband as he departed and said loudly, "I'll miss you, honey!" She waved her hoof for emphasis. Indeed she was going to miss her husband, as the depths of her loins demanded she receive a good rutting at some point.
"I'll miss you too, dear!" And after a short time, Night had left with the locomotive, the great metallic beast chugging westward.
Velvet had to put away the book Twilight had been reading. The filly didn't look happy about it.
"But Mooooom, it's not even that late out..." the filly said weakly.
"It's late for somepony of your age, Twilight." Velvet sounded tired, but she persisted. Twilight's bedroom was incredibly well-organized, but her bookshelf stood out as an example of how unruly the filly could be. At ten she had already begun collecting books thin and thick, some of which were well outside her age group. Still, Velvet and Night enjoyed the fact that their daughter was such an avid reader.
Twilight pulled the top of her blanket up, almost over her head, and made a quiet pfff sound with her lips. "But Mooooooom—"
"Nope, none of that nonsense," Velvet said as sweetly as she could. "You go to bed and you like it, alright?"
The bookish filly turned to her side, facing away from her mother. "Okay, Mom. But can I at least stay up later than usual for the weekend? I have some reading I really wanna catch up on."
