"Hey, you listening, dude?" Indigo Zap punched you on the shoulder, quickly placing her hand back on the wheel of the mini bus. "If you don't at least look like you're paying attention to Nightstick when you start training, you won't last long."

You'd heard stories of corruption and prison guards exploiting inmates before, and part of you began to wonder whether that was what Indigo meant about Thunderlane. You figured it was best to withhold the question, if you didn't want to get fired on the first day. Instead, you went for the query that you imagined couldn't get you into any trouble. "Why couldn't you blame him for being a perv?"

When Indigo turned to face you, you swear you saw electricity dance in her eyes, ever so briefly. "Alright, let me tell you this right now, newbie, because Nightstick sure won't say it and Thunderlane will say it in the most pigheaded way possible... nah, best you hear it from me."

Adagio responded by drawing closer, her smile even bigger if such a thing was possible, and there was barely an inch between them as she responded with cool, calm, and collected utterances. They stared each other down with power and passion, and to you. it was almost as if there was a silent battle of wills occurring before your eyes. Adagio's eyes were square on you as she whispered her response. "Worth it."

Indigo turned around with an icy glare, all semblance of fake smile completely gone. "Two days. Keep pushing it! I enjoy this more than I should."

Adagio didn't give her anything else to go on, shutting right up, but there was nothing Indigo could do to stop the snickers and chatter permeating the room.

Next moment, you were being dragged out of the room and into an adjacent hallway, your thoughts cascading as you attempted to make head or tail of what had just occurred. "You... you know I didn't want that, right?"

"So... you're Nightstick?" You'd managed to deduce that much, your face screwed up as your attempted to keep up to date with all you'd learned in such a small time frame.

Sunset nodded, gesturing for you to shut the door behind you. Her office was fairly spacious, though spartan in decoration. Filing cabinets, a locker, a desk, a window, a few framed certificates...

And, of course, a nightstick on her person, just like every other CO. "Why do they call you—"

She cut you off with a raised hand, eyebrows narrowed. "Ask one of the sergeants later, we've got ground to cover right now and I haven't got much time." She took a seat behind her desk, nodding at the seat on the other side. You pulled back the seat, sitting and instantly feeling a fidget beginning to take over. Her gaze was intense, and it was inescapable to you just how beautiful she was, even without trying.

Sunset barely seemed to react to this. In fact, she acted as if it was no news at all, picking up a pencil from her desk and brushing it over her lips, occasionally twirling it. "And is there a reason you're saying that so guiltily?"

"W-well, I don't want you to misconstrue what happened, that's all. It was her that kissed me, not the other way around. Her name was Dazzle, Adagio Dazzle."

Sunset's pencil caught in place. After a thoughtful moment, her lips closed around it, she lowered the thing and looked straight to you. Almost pierced you with her gaze. "Rule number one around here, be wary around Adagio. Do I even need to tell you what rule number two is?"

You gave it roughly half a second's thought. "Don't fuck her?"

Sunset grinned. "You're a fast learner!" Instantly, her smile vanished, eyes turning icy. "Some of these girls are a fucking pain. Some of them aren't very nice, some of them have little to no hope of being redeemed. But let's get one thing clear: they're my girls. So long as they're staying here, they're under my protection. Warden may not give a shit, but I do."

You shifted in your seat, feeling the air of the room change. "You know that I wouldn't hurt any of the inmates under any circumstance, right?"

Is it bad that the main thing you took from that was her calling you hunky? ...it probably was, but goddamn. If a woman like that could find you attractive, you were really doing well. It made sense that she wouldn't have noticed you in school, you hit puberty pretty late, but when you did, you developed well. Not as well as Sunset and her two friends did, but still.

You were snapped from your daydreams by a rapping against the desk, and you snapped your head up to find Sunset ruffling through papers, quickly handing one to you. "Sign this."

You eyed the document with scrutiny, but didn't want to flick through it too openly and give Sunset the impression that you didn't trust her. "What is it?"

"Your legal agreement to uphold the rules and boundaries of this institution for as long as you work here, all details I'm sure Celestia went over with you before now."

As a matter of fact, she didn't, she only got you the gig, but would admitting that you didn't know everything make you look stupid? Nodding, you signed the paper, making a mental note to read through it later and make sure you were versed in absolutely everything you needed to know for the job.

"Alright, great. That's the bureaucratic element taken care of." She reached out a hand, and as you looked at her slender fingers and manicured nails, you had a sudden urge to kiss the back of it. You weathered it before it could get you into trouble, reaching out to shake instead.

Nevertheless, Sunset looked at you as if you were an alien. "Uhh, newbie? What are you doing?"

You were... shaking her hand?

A few more seconds of awkward silence. "I need the papers back for the archives."

Oh. Ohhh. Shit, you must have looked like a total idiot, and there went your hopes of perusing them. Shit! Playing it off as if it was nothing, you passed them back, and the iota of unease vanished from Sunset's face. Looks like you were going to have to innovate, try and pick everything up on the job. You were sure Indigo would help you with that.

"This meeting is basically a formality, so you know. I'm not going to have time to give you any substantial assistance today, instead you'll be following Thunderlane for the next few hours. He's..." Sunset trailed off, seemingly searching for the words, "he's a fairly experienced sergeant, and should be able to advise you reasonably well. Just don't become a copy of him, if you can."

She was silent after that, eyes drifting to the wall as if she was heavily ruminating on something, and you got the distinct impression that there was more there than Sunset was letting on. You remembered Indigo's words about Thunderlane previously, how she'd talked him down, and started to wonder once again just how bad he actually was.

A heavy blink, and Sunset turned back to you. "But while you're still here, let me say something else." When she smiled this time, her eyes matched it, and it warmed your heart in the cold, plain room, giving it vibrancy where it had had none. "We're all a family here, even if we don't get along all the time. We look out for each other, us officers, and we look out for the inmates too, even if they hate our guts sometimes. Truthfully, the best way of doing so is typically at an arm's length, but remember that what we're doing here is impacting the lives of others. Even those who have been down a terrible path can find good in themselves and make a change if they're steered in the right direction."

You nodded, not sure what you could add. It was clear that Sunset had a deep care for her position here as well as the lives it impacted, and if anything, it only made her more endearing. This moment you were sharing with her felt special, even if she was only bearing her feelings like she might have to anyone else other than you. It was her body language, her earlier compliment, the curves of her body and the little smirk on her face, those shirt buttons that looked like they were about to tear off at any moment...

"Are you staring at my tits, newbie?"

Gasping, you jerked up to look at her, but found you couldn't match her gaze, which outclassed yours by a mile. You had indeed been doing so, but it wasn't intentional! You stammered to find a suitable response, but all you managed to do was dig yourself a hole of stutters.

You clammed up. Your palms perspired as you twiddled your thumbs. Your voice came out as a muted crack. "Yes, ma'am. Won't happen again, ma'am."

You could swear she pushed out her breasts as much as she could in response, arching her back in a faux-stretch. "See that it doesn't, I already get enough of the girls ogling me. Now go on, scram. Find Thunderlane, he should be doing dorm sweeps in the block past the cafeteria."

You stood faster than you needed to, as desperate to leave and save face as you were to stay and somehow try to seduce her. What was coming over you? It was these teasing girls and you knew it, they had you thinking like some kind of sex pest.

You stole one more glance at Sunset, but blinked away before you could be reprimanded for eye fucking her again.

"Go on, shoo!" she was waving her nightstick at you, that calm smile etched on her face again. Why did her lips look so inviting?

Put it out of your head, you need to go and find Thunderlane. Hell, with any luck, you were overthinking things, and he wouldn't be nearly as bad as Indigo made out. Let's hope that was the case.

One more look, and one of those buttons had finally fucking popped, exposing a healthy portion of Sunset's voluptuous chest, tits pressed together by the tightness of her shirt. No, there was no way that really happened.

Your bottom lip was half an inch from the top, and as you carried on looking, you realised that a) Sunset hadn't noticed it having come undone yet and b) when she did realise, you were about to get your second and third strike in one go. So you committed the image to memory, saved it for your personal jerk church, and turned and fled before she could deduce why the hell you'd paused for so long. You didn't pay much attention to which direction you were going in, and for all you knew, this was the completely wrong way, but it was away from Sunset and her grabable tits and pullable hair, so it was a win in your books as much as it was a loss.

"Trick is with these girls?" Thunderlane gave you a grin from behind his goatee, lowering his tone. "Gotta prove to them that you hold the power, that no matter what they do, what they say, they're not really people. Understand, new guy?"

You could feel yourself biting your tongue as you nodded. Thunderlane hadn't been hard to find, he seemed to make a point of being the most noticeable guy in the room, and you were assaulted by his cologne before you even entered the same room as him. "So, what do these rounds consist of?" Ask questions, show some initiative. Surely that was the way to show that you were actively engaged in your job.

When Thunderlane turned to look at you, you could swear you caught some element of twisted glee in his eyes. "This? Oh, it's nothing special. Just a quick survey of the area, check for contraband, make sure no one's fucking in plain sight, the usual." He flexed his muscular frame as he walked, puffing out his chest. You noticed that his presence drew uneasy stares from the inmates present, and you were quickly becoming another set of eyes to add to that list. You came into the dorm rooms together, finding that they were laid out in sets of two beds separated by walls on each side of the room. It almost reminded you of a camp, or a school dorm.

Just more sparse, more white and falsely pristine. Knowing you were meant to be shadowing Thunderlane, you allowed him to take the lead, but in reality, you had no clue what you were expected to do just yet, so it would be worthless for you to try to lead. He walked up to a pair of girls, who stood at attention at the end of the open plan walls to their 'room'. One of them was a short, busty thing with flowing pink hair and a pale yellow skin, looking about ready to crumple like a leaf. She didn't look as if she belonged here at all.

The other seemed to be her polar opposite. She had brown skin and white, spiky hair, and while she barely stood a few inches taller, the way she squared her shoulders and tensed her athletic frame made it clear that she wasn't to be fucked with.

But Thunderlane didn't seem to care one bit about the perceived threat. He moseyed on up to the pair of them, spinning and putting an arm on each of their shoulders, pulling them close. "Inmates... inmates! Such a hot day to be cooped up inside, you should be out enjoying yourselves, taking the place in!" A nasty grin. "It does get pretty boring in here, don't you want to see the outside for a little, even from afar?"

The white haired inmate jerked away, but the other looked too gripped by fear to move. Slowly, defensively, she began to pull her away too. "I would go outside, officer, but you banned me and Shy here from the track, remember?"

Thunderlane raised an eyebrow, clearly feigning ignorance. "Oh, I did? Well, that must have been some time ago, because I don't seem to recall." He leaned forwards, towering over the pair of them and reveling in the step back they took. "Remind me, why did I stop you before?"

"It was three weeks ago, and it was for running too fast." The white haired girl spat, staring directly at him.

"Yeah, that sounds about right." Thunderlane reached forwards, pressing his hands against the bottom of Fluttershy's breasts and softly pushing up. "Shouldn't have been encouraging this one to run so fast, those knockers could have taken someone's eye out, swinging around like that. I think I made the responsible decision, don't you?"

Fluttershy recoiled instantly, her eyes wide with fear. The other inmate only growled. Meanwhile, you couldn't believe what you were hearing, or seeing. Did Thunderlane really just put his hands on an inmate's tits like that? Where did he get off? And for that matter... "Wait, you're telling me that you banned two girls from using the running track for running too fast? Isn't that a good thing?"

Thunderlane spun on his heels, clicking his fingers. "Hush, new boy! Speak when spoken to, respect the rank, blah blah blah."

"I have a name, you know," you responded, suddenly feeling quite heated amidst his treatment of both yourself and both the girls beside him.

"And I have a higher rank than you, bub, so do me a favour and keep your mouth shut before I write you up for insubordination. We'll get along a lot better if you don't question me, capiche?"

Oh, this guy was a total asshole. Why did Nightstick even tolerate him? Did she not realise how bad he was? You were seething, you could feel your face beginning to redden, but... You knew it was best not to make a thing of this now. If you blew up at him straight away, it'd look bad on you. Report it later, that was your best bet. "Yes, sergeant."

"Good boy!" Thunderlane walked over and gave you a pat on the head, and you could feel the intensity of your snarl. Thunder pouted only a few inches from your face. "Oh, doggie doesn't bite, does he?"

Lose the glare, lose it. Slowly, painfully, you returned to a blank, lightly amicable expression, though you felt your muscles rebelling all the way. Not snapping at this prick was looking like it'd quickly turn into one of the hardest things you'd ever do. You honestly felt sorry for these two girls, Fluttershy especially, and as you glanced at them again, you found they were both looking at you. Fluttershy's eyes were soft, almost appreciative, but the other girl appeared wary.

Eventually, Thunder lost interest in tormenting you. "Right, inspection!" Waltzing into the room, he began to pick up and hurl random objects around, books and photo albums and toiletries alike. Eventually, he flipped one of the mattresses, throwing it into the middle of the room, and walked back out. The whole time, he'd been humming a deceptively happy tune, and it was quite clear from the manner of his actions that he hadn't actively been searching for anything. "Inspection results are in: your room's a total fucking mess. Sort it out within the hour or I'll rain shit on you, you two understand?"

Fluttershy couldn't even look at him, the other girl gave what must have been the stiffest nod of her life.

"Right, I've gotta go take a piss. Make sure these two start cleaning up." He sauntered off, that same hum resuming, rising in volume.

It was rare you wanted to punch someone this much. As soon as he was out of sight, Fluttershy began shuddering, and the other girl was right by her side to offer reassurance, stroking her hair. "Now, come on, you'll be alright. Just don't be a pussy about it, okay?"

Well, some form of reassurance, at least. A couple of sniffles as she enjoyed the moment, and Fluttershy took a deep breath, looking up again. "I... I know. Thank you, Gilda."

"Don't mention it." Gilda backed away before doing a double take. "Seriously, don't. Your gratitude makes me wanna hurl."

Fluttershy snickered, wiping at her eyes with the back of her hand as she stuck her tongue out. Soon after, she had her eyes on you. "Thank you for saying something to Officer Thunderlane, but we're honestly pretty used to it right now. We don't expect you to put yourself at risk to stand up for us."

Gilda looked at her with shock. "You kiddin'? I fucking do!" A couple of seconds pause, a grin. "Nah, no one gives a fuck about us in here, apart from maybe Nightstick and a few of the CO's, but not enough to do anything about that megalomaniac. He'll be lording it over us, compensating for his small dick for as long as we're in here, probably because no self-respecting woman would go near him on the outside and he fuckin' hates 'em as a result." Gilda squinted, taking a step closer. "What's your deal, anyways? Why'd you even say anything to him?"

"Just didn't seem fair to me, that's all. I'll talk to Nightstick about it soon, see if I can get your track privileges back too."

"No point." Gilda shrugged, chewing her lip between words. "Nightstick'll tell ya exactly what anyone else in her position would—warden ain't gonna approve of his step-son being reprimanded, main reason his golden child gets away with half of this shit. Besides, only five days until the end of the month, it's easier to wait than give yourself unnecessary hassle."

You gave a hesitant nod, but it still didn't feel right. Walking forwards into the once neatly kept room, you began to place the mattress back on the bed and pick up a few of the discarded books, stacking them on a nearby cabinet. You felt it was the least you could do considering, and both of the girls seemed appreciative. "At least tell me that there's no one worse than him in here, as far as CO's go, at least."

"Oh, he's definitely a top contender, no doubt there. As for whether he's the worst? Depends, really. He's got his favourites, the types that'll pretend to show an interest in him, the submissive, subservient, weak-minded bitches without a shred of dignity. Girls like us? It pisses him off to no end that we can think no, that we can show how much we hate being around him, even if we can't say it. And that's why we do it."

You flashed a smile at this admission. Not everyone could bend over to a guy like that, and you were glad that some of these girls showed the courage to stand up to him in their own ways, not pander to his bullshit. "You girls don't seem like the type for jail. Also, I think I recognise you. It's Fluttershy, right?"

"I think I recognise you too... you went to CHS, right?"

You nodded, and once the connection had been drawn, your eyes instantly lit up in realisation. "You were one of the Rainbooms, weren't you? I remember you hanging around Sunset—err, Nightstick, back in the day, now that I think about it. How the heck did you end up in here?"

Fluttershy shifted in place, quickly busying herself with picking things up and beginning to organise them. "Yes, I was always the quiet, understated one, so I'm not too surprised you didn't realise right away. I mean, I can't say much, I barely remembered you either."

Stranger and stranger as you made all of these connections, people you knew all seemed to be ending up here, one way or another. What did that say about the town you lived in, or the justice system, or your high school? Those questions were pushed aside for a more immediate concern. "You never told me why you're in here."

Fluttershy simply eep'd, stacking faster and being sure not to turn around. Gilda rolled her eyes. "We got put in here together. Actually a miracle we got the same bunk, considering. We've both got eight weeks served, should be out in a couple of months as long as we get good behaviour. It's been... interesting, to say the least."

"What did you both do?"

"It ain't what she did, it's what I did, but this one was stupid and loving enough to implicate herself just so I wouldn't have to suffer this alone. She could have gotten away with it." Gilda looked to Fluttershy, who was still stacking like a lunatic. "This is why she gets like this when someone brings it up, she ain't ashamed or anything, she just—"

Fluttershy cut her off, finding her voice. "I just know you'll tell me off again for pleading guilty, Gilda."

"Exactly. See, we were roommates on the outside. She responded to an ad I put up that said 'no pets, no smokers' with a text saying 'well, I'm not a smoker...' and a bunch of animal emojis. I thought it was cute and that the landlord could get fucked so I decided to move her in and hide whatever cat or hamster she had with her." Gilda narrowed her eyebrows, smirk growing with every word. "I wasn't expecting her to bring an entire fuckin' nature reserve with her, I can tell you that much."

You could feel yourself chuckling. This wasn't like earlier, no wolf whistling or being degraded. It was nice to have a genuine conversation with one of the inmates, even if it was in a one on two setting.

"Anyways, when it started to become clear that she wasn't gonna be able to keep all these critters, I had to break it to her that she'd have to give some away, or at least move a good portion of them somewhere else if we wanted to keep the place. Some of them went to good homes, but there were just so many that it was hard to keep up with which animal went where... unfortunately, Fluttershy was a little obsessive about the well-being of her ex-pets, and tracked down all of their locations a couple of months later, one by one."

Fluttershy seemed to tense a little at this moment in the story, and you didn't like where it was going either. "You two didn't go around stealing all of her pets back from people, did you?"

"Well... kinda, but it was just one. She had this rabbit, you see—"

"Bunny," Fluttershy chided, her eyes hard. You and Gilda both looked at her, yourself a little shocked, and she wilted under your eyes. "H-he's a bunny."

"Right. Anyways, she had this bunny called Angel that she absolutely refused to let live in a cage, and it kept leaving its messes around the apartment, so we had to give it up to a nice home. When Fluttershy tracked him down, turned out the family we'd given him up to had sold him again, he'd been difficult ever since leaving Fluttershy's side. Where they sold him? Avon, the cosmetics company."

Suddenly, you added two and two together really damn quickly. "You mean to say he was in there for animal testing?"

Gilda went back to organising her books, a grimace on her face. "Exactly. Companies don't pay that much for animals, but apparently it was enough for the dicks we gave 'em to. When Fluttershy heard about it, she was distraught. The idea of them doing horrible experiments on her bunny, cutting him up when they were done..."

You glanced over to Fluttershy again only to find that she'd covered her ears with her hands. "So... you went to go get him?"

Gilda couldn't help but chuckle. "Not him... them." You raised your eyebrows at the implications, this was starting to look like a serious crime. "I mean, yeah, the plan was just to buy him back, but the company insisted that test animals weren't for resale. No way we were having that, so the next night, me and Fluttershy broke in. You wouldn't guess how handy this one is with a crowbar."

Fluttershy's cheeks were tinted red, but she nodded. "We needed to get Angel back, and I wasn't going to just give up because the door was locked, and what we were doing was really, really illegal, and..."

"You just loved your bunny too much, I know." Gilda patted Fluttershy on the shoulder, and she gave her head a little shake at the contact, curls bouncing. "Anyways, once we got in there, finding Angel wasn't that hard, it's just..."

"When I saw all of the other ones, and how horribly they were being treated, I knew we had to act. Leaving them there would have been just as bad as being the ones who put them there."

"We argued, we debated it, but really, we didn't have much time to think it through. In the end, Flutters convinced me. We took as many as we could with us, and uncaged the rest." Gilda smirked, the picture of rebellion. "After that? It was fuckin' chaos. Animals runnin' all over the damn place, us trying to run away with half of 'em, and a bunch of lab coats trying to grab everything that was moving. Flutters got away, but I was caught with my pants down." She leaned forwards for emphasis, and you could almost feel her proximity. "Literally. One of the chimps was holding onto my leggings, it yanked 'em down and I toppled over, they detained me then and there and waited for the cops to arrive."

You couldn't help but feel of two minds about the whole story even as it sunk in. You hadn't gone into your job with any strong opinions on law and justice, only looking for something that paid and would put some experience on your resume, but hearing about the honestly noble reason that these two had attempted something so stupid threw you for a spin. Was it the right thing for them to do? Maybe not, but you couldn't help but nod along, trying to show that you understood what they went through. "And that's when Fluttershy turned herself in?"

"I wasn't going to let Gilda suffer alone for something that was ultimately my idea." Fluttershy wrapped her arms around Gilda's waist and pulled her onto the bed, rubbing the small of her back. "Ultimately, it was all worth it though, because Angel and some of the other critters found new, good homes and were taken care of, and honestly? I'm just glad that even through all this, I've still got the best roomie I could ask for."

Gilda laughed, burying her face in Fluttershy's shoulder. "Aw, shucks, you're gonna make me blush in front of the new guy..."

"And then he won't know what a big bad meanie you are, huh?"

In a flash, Gilda was standing tall, puffing out her chest. "Damn right! I'm the toughest bitch in this place, say that I ain't!"

Fluttershy took a single finger and pressed it against Gilda's lips, softly 'shh'ing her. You weren't sure who started laughing first, but it wasn't long until all three of you were at it, giggling like idiots. You hadn't expected to find camaraderie like this, especially from the inmates, and it was a welcome relief to consider that not every single one of them was eyeing you up like a piece of meat. Just a quirky, attractive, and entertaining duo you were lucky enough to meet on your first shift.

"So anyways, that's us, why not tell us a little about you?"

You froze at the question. You weren't particularly used to talking about yourself, but they were both leaning in to hear it, and you'd just listened to a pretty personal story about them, so would it hurt to share? A short mental nod as you made up your mind. You pursed your lips. "Well, I'm from—"

"That looks like fraternisation, new fuck!"

Oh, shit. Somehow, you'd completely forgotten about Thunderlane the goatee sporting bastard and the piss he was taking. "No sir, I was just making sure that they had their room up to standard."

Thunderlane squared up to you, his voice low. "Not trying to get your dick wet?"

You bit back a growl. "No, sir."

A belittling snicker. "Because you know if you were, you'd have better luck elsewhere. These two are massive fuckin' dykes. Right, finish up and meet me in the surveillance room." Thunder began strolling off before stopping with a snap of his heels. "And grab me a soda from the vending machine, make sure it's still ice cold when you give it to me."

Impossible request over, Thunderlane finally left. Fuck, you hated him. Looking to the girls with a guilty expression, you only found smirks on their faces, as if they were privy to some joke you were missing out on. When they didn't let up, you couldn't help but cave. "What? What is it?"

Gilda was the one to speak. "He called us lesbians. He thinks we're lesbians. Probably thinks anything that's ever not shown an interest in him is a freakin' lesbian." She dropped her tone to a scandalous whisper, locking eyes with you. "We're actually bi." A small wink from Gilda and a nod from a still red-faced Fluttershy, and you felt excited and conflicted all at once. Funny how such simple words could have such an effect on you. He is a total piece of shit, but there's nothing we can really do about it, and no one wants to tell Nightstick just how bad he really is, because if they don't manage to get the complaints past the warden, it'll be their job on the line for even saying anything. Warden could make your life pretty miserable in here, so it's best to keep your head down."

You weren't entirely happy with this response, honestly. The fact that Nightstick didn't even know the all of it was shocking to say the least. "So what, you just let him go around doing what he wants? Hardly seems like a much better solution."

"You're totally, right, of course, but us staff have to eat, newbie. We still take him down a peg whenever we can. He knows he's hated in here, if that's any consolation." She frizzed up her already messy hair with her hands, running her fingers through the multi-coloured locks. "Argh, this day's left me completely beat. The girls have been driving me crazy, too, they know just how badly I wanna jump half of 'em. Think I'll be spending the night on Pornhub at this rate."

While the inmates had been enticing, Indigo had been on your mind all day, and now that she was here, offering herself up to you, any niggling thought in the back of your mind earlier that she might have just been teasing had vanished.
