The sky always has and always will be a beautiful sight to behold. Ever since you were a boy, you’ve dreamed of one day being able to fly high into the sky. Though it was physically impossible to do so at that current, young age, you still clinged onto that dream when you one day heard about the elite flying team known as the Blue Angels.

You first watched one of their performances for your tenth birthday, when your father bought you and your mother some tickets to a NASCAR race. The way they gracefully soared through the skies was mind-blowing. The second you saw them, you had to tell your parents you wanted to be just like the Blue Angels.

While your mother was worried about such a career, your father said he would support you and repeatedly reminded you that if you were really dedicated to joining the Blue Angels, you’d have a chance. Even with this support, your mother remained too scared of the thought of losing you if you performed for such a dangerous flight team. It’s because of your her tough love that it was difficult for you to do anything outside your home. Sometimes you would overhear kids from school making fun of you for being so sheltered.

As you got older, your father’s concern grew along with you and he tried over and over to convince your mother that she had to let you make your own decisions. Seeing as she was way too stubborn to listen to reason, it got you so agitated, all you could think about was sneaking out and running away.

One day, you actually planned on doing so after school, until your dad told you about your mom wanting to talk to you. You were extremely annoyed by this point and wanted to just get it over with as quickly as possible. So, when you got home, your mother was waiting for you on the living room couch. Even though she looked stubborn, you could sense she was more guilty and decided to stay. You’ll never forget how she broke down, confessing how sorry she was for being so close-minded. Being the affectionate son that you were, you couldn’t possibly reject her apology.

She explained how she was just so insecure about the thought of having to one day let you go out into the real world. You were her child after all and losing you would be like losing her whole world. You ended the tearful conversation by hugging her that day and told her you forgave her and there was nothing she could have done that would make you stop loving her. From that day forth, you got to have a whole lot more freedom in your life.

Staying loyal to your dream of joining the Blue Angels as the years passed, that goal became a reality when you graduated college to undergo the training. Of course, it wasn’t easy, but with dedication, you earned your place on the flight team. You only spent one whole year with them and already, you performed at about 18 or 20 shows. Each one was even more successful than the last. The job certainly paid well and your fellow Blue Angel comrades were glad to have you on the team.

One of the Blue Angel pilots also happened to be your very best friend and it’s no mystery why. From the moment you started training for your place on the team, he gave you a few tips on how to perform more diligently in the air without worrying about struggling too hard to make those sharp turns. And during most of the previous shows, you finished them off by doing a double barrel roll.

As of right now, the Blue Angels are scheduled to do another air show in Seattle. You’ve been on the team for 3 years now and not once have you regretted getting to where you are today. So it’s no surprise that you were excited for today’s show. The best part for you, was that Seattle is where your parents lived and after telling them where and when you’ll be performing, you asked to come and watch you. For what reason could they possibly have to turn you down after you worked so hard to get here?

Your mother, was scared, but she didn’t have it in her to refuse your invitation and not just because your father was so persuasive. She’s shown a lot of her support for your career, so she’s going to prove it by coming to one of your shows. Your father on the other hand, was excited to come and see you perform.

The big performance would be starting in an hour, which was more than enough time for your parents to arrive. They said over the phone that they would be watching you from the Seattle Space Needle. You knew that even though your mother was hesitant about the show, at the same time, she was very proud of you.

As of right now, you were hopping aboard your jet with the rest of your comrades. “You guys all ready for take-off?” you asked over the mic.

“10-4, bud, let’s take it to the house,” your best friend said into your headset. Starting up the engines, you and the other Blue Angel pilots aligned at the runway in a V-shape formation. Your teammates working at the air hangar all saluted you. You saluted them back before soaring off into the sky, quickly making your way towards Seattle.

Memories came flooding back to you as you were flying in the air. How hard you worked to accomplish your childhood dream. All the trials and tribulations you had to overcome to get to where you are now have all been well worth the effort. You sighed happily and prepared to change the direction of your plane.

“This is it, boys! Let’s show them what we’re really made of!” your captain said as you reached Seattle right on schedule. You followed along with the plan and pulled up to the left and did a barrel roll 5 times before moving to the right with one of the other pilots. The next trick was for you and the other pilot to fly down in a drilling motion and then regroup with the others.

You were about to go through with the plan, but it seemed fate had other plans in mind. Suddenly, you felt a blowout from behind and your jet got all wobbly and unstable. “Shit! Guys! We got a problem!” you said in a bit of a panic. You checked your screen and saw that one of the jet turbines had a blow-out.

“What’s the matter?” your friend asked.

“One of my turbines had a blow-out, I can’t steer this thing right!” you said, trying to steer the jet, but it was all in vein. The jet spirals out of control during its descent and was coming close to hitting the water. “MAY DAY! MAY DAY! MAY-!!!” you shouted before the jet explodes upon impact, after crashing into the water and everything soon went black.

‘Mom... will you ever forgive me for leaving you?’ you thought as you drifted through the dark abyss aimlessly. Somehow even in this dark, lonely void, you were capable of crying. Not because you died, but because you had to leave your mother when she knew the dangers of your career, despite her support. Even now, you were wishing it didn’t have to end this way. For your mother’s sake, you prayed to God that she would be strong in your absence and your father will stand by her side.

You woke up some time later after your body felt heavy again. When you opened your eyes, you saw this beautiful, golden chandelier directly above you. It was a pretty sight to see, but sadly, something told you this wasn’t heaven. You slowly sat yourself up and the moment you did so, you felt a different kind of density in your hands. Looking down, your eyes widened when you saw scales on your hands.

It wasn’t something you were used to seeing and didn’t know what to do other than freak out. “W-What the?! How! W-What the hell is going on? What happened to me?!” you asked, panicking more. Unfortunately, no one was around to give you an answer.

Taking a better look at your hands, it was more than just scales. There were claws on the tips of your fingers, which needless to say, have replaced your fingernails. Reaching up to touch your neck, you felt the same scaly texture, as did your chest which unlike your neck, was in your line of sight. You discovered as you got off the bed that there was more to your mysterious transformation than just scales and claws. At first you couldn’t figure it out, but you felt something on your back that you could move just as easily as you could your arms and legs.

“Oh, this should be good,” you sarcastically told yourself as you turned around to see what this new feeling was. Your jaw dropped from the moment you realized you had wings. “What the... where did these come from?” you asked, extending the membrane and admiring the beauty of these divine new body parts.

You were only given a few more seconds to admire your new wings before you heard a knock at the door and you discovered you were now able to snarl. Whoever was on the other side of the door, decided to stop knocking and opened the door instead. Your eyes locked on and you discovered you had not one, but two visitors. You wondered how many surprises you’d get today, as while one of your visitors appeared to be a blue humanoid dragoness, you were more interested in the other one, as he looked like a human with dragon-like features just like you.

“You done with your little panic session there?” the man asked.

“What... what did you do to me?” you said, answering a question with a question. This time, the dragoness was one who spoke.

“What we did is save your life,” she said, waving some sort of scepter with a beautiful ruby embedded at the top. “I was up pretty early in the morning when I saw you falling out of the sky and I knew no other dragon around would be generous enough to save you. Seeing as I wouldn’t make it in time, I used the Bloodstone Scepter to grant you the tough features of our kind which allowed you to withstand the lava you were about to fall into.”

“So, now... I’m a half-dragon now?” you asked, unable to stop yourself from flexing your wings again.

“Well, those wings of yours aren’t just for show. Honestly, I’m a little bit jealous that you got yours so quickly. It took some time for me to get mine when I was transformed by the scepter,” the dragon man said with a chuckle. “Anyway, they call me Imperium and this is my mate and the lord of all dragons, Dragon Lord Ember.” Whether it was purely out of affection or to embarrass her, Imperium licked Ember’s cheek, making her grumble and blush.

Not wanting to be rude, you introduced yourself to the couple. “So, if you don’t mind me asking, could you two tell me where I am and how I got here?” Before they could answer, your stomach started growling, leaving you embarrassed.

“You have a lot to learn about being a dragon, rookie. I guess a good place to start is to show you what you’ll have to eat around here,” Ember said with a smirk before exiting the room. You frowned, not sure what to make of this smug attitude, but if Ember is the leader of the dragons, you’d have to put up with it. Getting over it, you followed both Ember and Imperium out of the room and down the grand hallway.

This living arrangement seemed a bit different than that of the dragons you’ve read about in story books, or at least for the royalty around here. Looking out of the many windows of what was probably a castle, you couldn’t see anything besides caves and volcanoes, implying that the other dragons didn’t like nice, cozy living arrangements. Due to your growling stomach, you weren’t currently that interested in the environment you were in, or how you ended up here for that matter. You must have been unconscious longer than you thought because of how hungry you were.

Luckily, you didn’t have to wait any longer once Ember and Imperium showed you to the wide dining hall where one huge dragon and a few other dragons were waiting. Amongst them dragons, were some who were quite young who rushed over to Ember and clung onto her, making her groan, annoyed. Imperium snickered and while you didn’t laugh with him, you did smile.

“You’re enjoying this way too much,” Ember snarled, glaring at her mate.

“What can I say, the kids love their mommy,” Imperium shrugged. You had a hunch that the hatchlings had a close relationship with Ember and your theory proved to be correct when you learned the blue dragoness is their mother.

“Mama! Food now! I’m hungry!” demanded one of the hatchlings, as he clung his tiny claws around his mother’s neck.

“Okay already! Just let go of me and we can sit down and eat!” Ember said, trying to get her hatchlings off of her. The hatchlings did so on their own and sat at the table. “Parenthood is one heck of a job, I’ll tell you that much.” You could tell she was doing her best not to curse in front of her children.

Once the little fiasco was over and dealt with, you sat down with the others and served yourself some of the tasty meat they had. But when your eyes locked on the bowl of jewels, you got this strange urge to... eat them?

“Well, aren’t you going to eat, rookie?” Ember asked before biting into a large ruby.

“Y-Yeah, I just got curious of why my taste buds have this sudden craving for jewels,” you said with a gulp. With each passing second, it was becoming much harder to resist the gems in front of you.

“We dragons love to eat jewels. It’s sort of like our bread and butter in a way. If you have a craving for jewels, it’s because your dragon instincts are kicking in,” Imperium explained. On his plate was not only gems, but also what appeared to be beef and steak and roasted chicken. You weren’t quite sure what kinds of animals there were in this unfamiliar world.

Shrugging it off, you decided to start eating, sinking your sharp fangs into the juicy cut of beef. The flavor of your beef was definitely a lot richer than the kind that you had back home. Regardless of the animal that it came from, the meat was and rich and thick. You then gave into your new dragon instincts and went for one of the emeralds on the table. Your teeth had been changed into fangs during the transformation and easily broke through the gem. You didn’t expect the emerald to have such a minty flavor to it, almost like mint candy, only crunchier.

That Bloodstone Scepter, as Ember called it, had changed you not only physically, but mentally as well. These mental changes extended slightly to your manners at the table. Usually you went for the big meals whenever you were hungry, but you never went crazy. However, your were now instincts out of control and you were tearing through your meat while making these predatorial growls.

You could also hear Imperium growl as he’s tearing up his own food. Even though he wasn’t snarling as much as you were, you still theorized that this kind of behavior was just another part of a dragon’s nature. Licking the crumbs off your lips, you sighed in content after wolfing down your tasty meal.

“You weren’t lying. I never would have thought that I’d actually be eating gems when they’re sold at a high price,” you chuckled, but once you calmed down, things got a little more serious. You decided that once you were through eating, you would take advantage of your time to see just what this world had to offer.

Flying a plane was one thing, but being able to fly on your own with your new wings was a completely different experience. It’s amazing how it didn’t take too long to figure out how to use your wings, as Imperium said he’s lost count of how many dragons he’s seen crash when they tried flying for the first time. However even if you adjusted to your wings faster than most dragons, with your lack of training, you could only fly for about 15 minutes before you got tired.

That was exactly the case as of right now, for you were sitting on a rock, tearing through some meat in order to get your strength back. Because of your newfound instincts, over the last week you’ve been here, you’ve often ventured into the nearby forest to hunt down a snack. Today’s menu was the corpse of a cockatrice, a chicken snake hybrid which you didn’t even know existed until today. You kept away from the other dragons, as it was in their nature to be greedy and you had no intention of giving up your kill.

To top it off, it took you much less than a week to learn that the Dragon Lands wasn’t the friendliest kingdom to live in and it was today that you decided you wanted to be in the company of more civilized creatures. You’ve already been approached by some obnoxious dragons who were always waiting for the chance to harass you. They haven’t caused you much trouble yet, but that was only because Dragon Lord Ember and Imperium kept a good eye on you.

You were grateful that the dragon rulers had your back, since you were a bit of a pacifist and preferred to avoid getting into trouble with the dragons around you. After all, the Blue Angels was purely a team for flight demonstration and entertainment, therefore, you didn’t have to go out to battle. Persuading your mother to support your career would have been much harder if you had decided to enlist as a Navy soldier instead.

“I see you’ve caught something new today,” a voice friendlier than what you usually heard around here said. Turning around after swallowing another chunk of your cooked cockatrice meat, you see Imperium’s father walking towards you. Like his son, he too had been altered by the scepter in order to withstand the harsh conditions of the dragon lands. Furthermore, alongside Ember’s father the previous dragon lord, Torch, he currently served as one of the royal advisors and even the testiest dragons respect his authority and started calling him the Great Dragon Elder.

“New, but not as unpleasant as the food at dinner,” you said with a chuckle. You offered the middle-aged dragon hybrid one of the cockatrice you had yet to eat, something few dragons around here would even consider. The Great Dragon Elder accepted it and took a bite out of it, munching on its cooked carcass.

“Here’s the problem, it wasn’t cooked all the way,” he said, grinning before fixing the problem with a nice breath of light orange fire. Blushing a bit at your simple mistake, you also breathed some flames onto the cockatrice. When Ember transformed you, you gained the ability to breathe blue flames, which were possibly the hottest flames and last time, you ended up disintegrating a slab of meat and got some of the ashes all over Ember’s face. Such a mistake infuriated her to the point where she chased you throughout the dragon lands for 3 solid hours.

Mistakes are to learn from, as this time you made sure to be extra careful not to breathe more fire than necessary. You and the Dragon Elder finally got the cockatrice cooked up right this time and it tasted a lot better this time.

“With all due respect, I’m sure you didn’t come here simply to help me with eating,” you theorized, before taking another bite.

“You’re right, we’ve noticed how unhappy you seem to be around here. In fact, you hardly stay in your room at all and instead spend the night staring into the distance until you fall asleep. At the same time, I’ve paid attention to how much you enjoy being in the sky. I expect no less from a member of the Blue Angels. That’s why we’ve decided to do a little searching for a place we know you would be welcome,” the Dragon Elder said.

“What did you have in mind?” you asked.

“Ever heard of a place called Cloudsdale and this place called the Wonderbolts Academy?” the Great Dragon Elder asked.

“No, what are they like?” you asked, feeling your curiosity get the better of you. To answer you, the elder pulled a flyer out from his robe and gave it to you.

“See for yourself,” he answered. Looking at the flyer, your eyes flung eyed open. The flyer showed a picture of what looked like humanoid ponies in blue and yellow uniforms posing as an elite flying team. You only needed one look to figure out these were residents of Equestria.

“How did I not hear about this before?” you asked, unable to tear your eyes away from the poster due to being drunk with fascination.

“Because this entire time, my son has been persuading the leader, Spitfire into trying something new and take in an unfamiliar recruit. He went so far as to brag about how you could fly circles around the other recruits in your sleep, which recommended he didn’t do in the first place,” he said, squeezing the bridge of his nose.

“When... When do I start?” you asked, hoping to have at least a few more days to polish your flying skills before departing to the academy. You didn’t know anything about the winged ponies, or pegasi that you saw on the flyer, but you had reasons to believe that many of them could fly longer than your 15 minute limit.

“Even though Captain Spitfire has made an exception in allowing you into the academy, she’s not being so lenient about the beginning of your training. You like all the other recruits, have 2 weeks before the academy opens up,” he said. Swallowing the last bit of his cockatrice, the Great Dragon Elder stood up and he patted you on the shoulder. “Think about it.”

Once he was done talking to you, he flew back to the castle, leaving you to gather your thoughts on what you should do. Looking at the flyer which was still in your hands, your first thought was to jump at this opportunity since the thought of flying with an elite team thrilled you more than anything else. The only problem you had to work out was the limited amount of time you could stay airborne.

‘If I’m gonna have any chance of proving that I’m qualified enough to join the Wonderbolts, I’m gonna need some help from the experts. But the question is… who do I ask for help? Imperium and Ember are too busy with their kids, and I have a feeling Imperium’s father can’t exactly fly that far either. Guess that leaves Torch as my only option,’ you thought.

After repeatedly flapping your wings in preparation for take off, you soared high into the air with a big leap and flew back to the castle. Retired or not, Torch could be a stubborn old dragon, but you were going to be extra persistent in asking for his guidance.

As a pilot, you never thought such an ironic event of asking for flight lessons would happen, let alone from a creature that is mythical back in your world. Every day for the last 2 weeks, you got very little peace from Torch’s harsh coaching. But thanks to your endurance and his expert teaching methods, you finally exceeded your 15 minute flight limit and instead, you now had the ability to fly for a whole hour. However you were surprised that before you left, Imperium told you that the Wonderbolt elites could surpass such an amount of time.

Flapping your mighty wings, you took in the nice, cool air that blew in your face as you soared. You smiled confidently, excited for the opportunity to finally relive your dream as a performer of the air. With another strong flap, you slightly picked up speed and couldn’t stop yourself from licking your lips out of excitement.

There was an obvious difference between the sky around the kingdom of Equestria and that of the Dragon Lands. The smoke which you often spotted in the atmosphere whether from the volcanoes or the resident dragons, was nowhere to be seen. Instead, the sky was a nice, clean shade of blue with a few white fluffy clouds. Very soon however, clouds weren’t the only thing in your line of sight.

‘Well... this is it,’ you thought, looking down to see a training camp being supported by the clouds below it. You didn’t have time to wonder how it was possible to build on top of a cloud, as you were on the clock. Squinting your eyes, you could see a yellow pegasus mare with a fiery orange and yellow mane and tail wearing an officer’s uniform. Standing beside her, were two muscular stallion pegasi, one had gray fur and the other had white.

Descending onto the cloud concrete, you got an even better look at the yellow pegasus and instantly recognized her as the Wonderbolts’ captain featured on the flyer, Spitfire. The mare raised an eyebrow, clearly not that impressed that she now had a dragon trying out for the team. For all you knew, she was probably displeased that you were the last trainee to arrive.

“So, you’re the newbie the dragon emperor’s husband told me about. Get in line with the rest of the newbies and await my commands,” she ordered in a tone that was very close to yelling. If Spitfire was the kind of captain her uniform told you she was, then she would be shouting at you and the other recruits really soon.

“Speak when you’re spoken to, newbie!” she scolded, confirming your theory.

“Ma’am, yes ma’am!” you frantically replied and saluted before you got in line with the others. Unlike Spitfire, your fellow recruits displayed interest that the Wonderbolts now had a dragon in the academy, even if half of you was still human. However when a whistle was loudly blown, you all gave Spitfire your attention like you should have from the start.

“So you all came here to earn your place in the Wonderbolts. You think you’re qualified to be an elite flyer?” the captain asked, walking from one end of the line of recruits to the other.

“Yes ma’am!” we all shouted in unison.

“Well, as I tell all my recruits: no matter how hard you worked to get here, no matter how much you think you’re qualified to be on the team... you’re NOT!” Spitfire yelled, her mood rapidly changing as she got into the face of a stallion rookie, who was now trembling. “You all will learn the hard way just like I did that you’d already be on the team if you were worthy of the position!”

‘Wow, a hothead and a hardhead,’ you thought to yourself. Unfortunately your thoughts didn’t provide as much safety as you thought, as Spitfire noticed you were smirking a little.

“Something funny, dragon?! If you think this is a place for comedians, you might as well get out of my sight while you still have the chance!” You immediately straightened your expression, not wanting to humiliate yourself any further. “Yeah, that’s what I thought.”

Now that you thought about it you couldn’t honestly blame Spitfire for acting like a drill sergeant. From what you saw on the flyer, the Wonderbolts were looking for talented flyers for stunt shows, but it wasn’t all fun and games. You understood that as the captain, Spitfire had the responsibility of making sure each recruit, finished their training understanding the risks that come with being on the team. Should a member not take their job seriously during a performance, their carelessness could lead to serious injury to both themselves and others.

Besides, now that you had a good look at her, Captain Spitfire was kind of pretty. It was hard to do so from a distance since she wore sunglasses, but when she got in your face, you noticed her eyes were a nice shade of orange, matching the color of her mane and tail. Also while you were normally a well-mannered man, you noticed she had a pretty nice pair of...

‘What are you doing man, snap out of it! Looking like a comedian is one thing, but it’ll be impossible to live down looking like a pervert!’ you mentally scolded yourself, somehow managing to keep a straight face despite your thoughts. Thankfully, no one had suspected you.

“First thing’s first you slackers, you call this proper way to stand at attention?!” Spitfire yelled and came up to a mare to point out the first mistake. “Legs together!” Not wanting to push her captain any further, the poor mare put her legs together like she was told. Spitfire then went to the stallion standing beside the mare rookie. “Arms down!” she yelled and he corrected himself just as quickly.

It wasn’t long until she reached you again and got up in your face. “Got anything left in that funny bone of yours to make you crack that smirk again, private? I’ve lost count of many recruits who have either dropped out or have been dismissed, so feel free to add yourself to the list whenever you feel like it!” she urged. While it wasn’t pleasant to get yelled at, it would take more than this to make you leave.

“No ma’am! I don’t plan on going anywhere, ma’am!” you declared and Spitfire gave you a small smile, showing she was at least somewhat impressed with your response.

“Good, then if there are no quitters, you can put yourselves to use by giving me 50 laps around the track... NOW!!!” she yelled before blowing her whistle so quickly, none of you had any time to complain. Personally, you wouldn’t have protested even if you had the option, as this was clearly not the most difficult exercise you’d be doing for your training.

As you completed your first lap, you silently thanked Imperium for giving you the chance to relive the career you absolutely loved so much.

The First Dragon Recruit

The First Dragon Recruit

You stared up at the ceiling of the academy barracks, barely able to keep your eyes open after all you’ve done for your first day of Wonderbolt training. You didn’t dare move your wings, which have become sore from all the flying exercises. It’s clear that you were tired, as under normal circumstances, you would’ve thought twice before foolishly lying on your back when both of your wings are aching.

Even with the torment that your wings were going through, you managed to crack a smile since you wouldn’t go to bed with these negative results forever. You planned to stay here at the academy and continue with the training. With patience, the pain will linger less and less and you’ll be able to perform more efficiently. And with a little luck, you might be able to impress that drill sergeant who you secretly have the hots for.

Some ponies think it’s futile to try and win Spitfire’s affection due to the fact that she’ll drive any stallion crazy with her barking orders all the time. But you’re not gonna listen to them just because she’s a bit on the temperamental side, at least while she’s on job. If anything, you had a particular soft spot for ladies who are strong-hearted like Spitfire.

Anyway, today the recruits were scheduled for a machine called the Dizzitron, but the exercise had to be put on hold until tomorrow due to technical difficulties. Truth be told, the gadget started falling apart before any of you got an explanation as to how it works. However, just from the name, you could tell that once the Dizzitron was fixed, you’d be in for a wild ride.

Unable to bare with the pain of laying on your wings, you finally turned over to lay on your side. You sighed at the great change in comfort and closed your eyes to get a well-deserved rest. Something you would need, since training starts at 0600 hours. That means when it was time to wake up, then you’d only have an hour to get ready and have breakfast. Thank god you were used to those conditions.

Just as your brain turned off for the night, your eyes opened back up as you heard two stallions talking to each other. Even though they were whispering, you could still make out that they were amusing themselves by talking about Spitfire’s... assets. These were definitely the immature delinquents of this year’s recruits.

“Can you believe she can fly with those things? I’m surprised she hasn’t broken her back even after being a Wonderbolt for so long,” one of the stallions said, getting a snicker out of his companion and then joining him in the snicker.

“I hear ya man, I’ll bet she’s a regular one night stand, not that I’m into her or anything,” this other stallion whispered.

With the natural aggression of a dragon kicking in again, you began to growl because of how disrespectful they were being. However, you calmed down remembering that fighting amongst your fellow Wonderbolts was strictly prohibited. Plus, you had fangs and claws now and attacking these stallions could lead to you causing injuries that would land you in prison. But there’s still one way to get back at ‘me for what they said about her. All it requires is pushing the right buttons

You weren’t given the best wake up call, for the moment the clock hit 6, all the recruits had their slumber ruined when a loud trumpet was blown over the speakers. In fact, a few recruits fell out of their beds, unprepared to be woken up in such a manner. You were one of the recruits who didn’t fall off the beds, considering your previous experience of the training you went through back in the Navy.

Getting out of bed, you stretched and made your way to get dressed before breakfast. You even made time for your daily hygiene routine. After that, you left for the mess hall with the others and it’s there that you saw Spitfire eating alongside some of her most trusted Wonderbolts. Recruits had to sit in separate tables, unless they either ask permission politely or if the officials offer you to join them.You took a chance and approached Spitfire.

“Permission to sit next to you, captain?” you asked.

“Granted, private,” she said without even turning to look at you. You frowned at such a flat answer, but sat down nonetheless. “You sure got a lot of guts for asking to sit next to your superior, private. Any reason why?”

“Come on, captain, you don’t gotta be mean to him outside of the training grounds,” one of the other ponies said.

“I was just asking what his reason was for asking to sit with me,” Spitfire snarled.

“Well, I just felt like I wanted to give you some company. And there’s a pretty interesting story I wanted to share with you.” You decided to take a bite of your food before going into detail. Even though dragons are carnivores, half of you was still human, so you could eat the vegetables that were being served.

“A story, huh? Surprise me if you think you can, private.”

“First thing’s first, what were to happen if a private were to talk disrespectfully about their commanding officer behind their back?” you asked.

“As if you even have to ask, I’d make ‘em do a total of 200 push-ups... while I sit on their back,” Spitfire said, smirking.

“And she’d call them out for talking bad behind her back. Call them wusses or something much more embarrassing.” Turning to find the voice, you saw a stallion pegasus with pale light blue coat and a dark blue mane coming over to your table. Accompanying him was a light arctic blue mare with a clean, white mane and a smug smile that somewhat irritated you a little. You remembered to keep your emotions in check.

“Why bring up the subject, did some of the recruits talk smack about me?” Spitfire asked, furrowing her brow. You thought about what you should do, wondering if it would be really childish to snitch on a couple of your teammates. If you let their foolishness continue, there’s a chance Spitfire would catch them herself. On the other hand, there was also a chance they’d find a way to keep this up and not be found out about it. And defiling a captain, especially a mare is something you hated the most.

“Uh...” you said, looking foolish since you couldn’t make a decision. Soon, you went with your clean conscience and whispered what had transpired last night in the bunkers. Right away, Spitfire’s confident smirk changed into a snarling scowl and she crushed her cup of water.

“Uh, private... you might want to head back with the other recruits. Trust me, you don’t want to get in the way when she’s this pissed off,” Soarin warned. You nodded and grabbed your tray, then headed off to sit with your teammates. You made a wise choice to stay away from the two stallions who you just sold out.

Now that the repairs for the Dizzitron were finished, you and the other trainees were ordered to fly a few laps before you got the chance to try out the contraption. With one last, powerful flap you landed back on the field, wondering who would be called up first. Truth be told, if this machine did what you think it did, it shouldn’t be too different from the spins you did when you used tp performed in a Blue Angels jet.

“Line up and pay attention, maggots! Yesterday, we faced an unfortunate malfunction with the Dizzitron, but that won’t happen again. Spin-outs are possible for even the Wonderbolts, who are some of the fastest and most talented flyers in the land. That being said, joining the team includes being able to recover quickly.” Nodding to her assistant, the stallion pulled off a large sheet, exposing the recently repaired Dizzitron.

“To train you to fly straight as soon as you can, each of you rookies will be rotated on the Dizzitron and released only after becoming very dizzy. Once you recover, you must come in for a nice, smooth landing. Only a recruit who can be trained to regain their senses in no more than 6 seconds can truly be trusted to be a Wonderbolt.”

Now that Spitfire’s instructions were clear, she scanned the line to decide who would be first. Half of you, wanted to raise your hand volunteering to start things off, but your captain decided on a light gray mare who was looking at the Dizzitron with terror.

“You’re first,” she said, but the mare flew over rather slowly. “TODAY!” The random mare squeaked in fear and hurried up to get on the Dizzitron. You let out a soft growl that Spitfire didn’t hear, thankfully. Your dragon instincts might’ve went unnoticed now, but there’s always a chance you would get caught if you did it again.

Once the mare once strapped in, Spitfire ordered her employee to turn the machine on. Looking over, you saw three images: on the left was a turtle, the middle was a rabbit, and the right side was the image of a pair of wings with a skull in the middle. Piecing it together, you theorized that the images left to right, were the slowest to highest speeds.

Once the stallion pulled a lever, the Dizzitron began to rotate the mare. While your teammates had their eyes on the machine, you looked over at the power source and saw that the arrow was pointing to the image of the turtle. Even at its slowest speed, the Dizzitron was still moving remarkably fast.

“RELEASE!” Spitfire shouted. The mare was quickly thrown off and traveled straight through the air at blazing speeds. You all watched as she struggled to regain control through all the dizziness and eventually settled to a complete stop back on the ground. “Hmm, 11 seconds, not bad for a rookie.”

‘Seems simple enough, no pressure,’ you thought, tightening your fists.

“Alright dragon, it’s your turn,” Spitfire said. Unlike the poor pegasus who was making her way back in line as if she was drunk, you didn’t hesitate to get on the Dizzitron. “Don’t lose your breakfast, private, because we’re about to increase the speed of this bad boy! Sure that won’t be a problem for a dragon of your caliber.”

“Ready and waiting, ma’am!” you agreed with a salute before putting your goggles on. Soon, the Dizzitron started and everything around you was spinning gradually fast. Nevertheless, you focused very hard and waited on her command to be set free.

“RELEASE!” Spitfire shouted. And just like that, you were sent spinning through the air wildly, but quickly recovered and did a barrel roll before flying back quickly and landed on the ground with your wings still extended as if you were showing off and your piercing dragon eyes going quite well with your confident smirk. “Hmm, not bad, rookie. With 7 seconds, you almost beat the record time, but almost isn’t good enough.”

You growled at how frustrating it was that you were just ONE lousy second too late from making the record time.

“Ah, quit your snarling. At least you’re not a slouch like I thought you were, now fall back in line with the others, private!” Spitfire ordered. Calming down because of the sudden praise, you did as you were told. “Alright, so who’s next?”

One by one, you watched the rest of the rookies as they all got tormented by the incredible speed of the Dizzitron. While all of them managed to recover before landing, not one of them did so in less than 6 seconds. The last pony to get launched into the sky was a mare with a crimson coat and a dark blue mane. She managed to land after 9 seconds and was left with spinning pupils like the rest of her teammates.

“Alright maggots, that’s a wrap on the Dizzitron for today, but I recommend you get used to being dizzy, as this isn’t the last time we’ll be putting you on the machine. To make sure each of you become Wonderbolt material, you’ll be split into pairs for the next set of training exercises on our famous air obstacle course! Teams will be decided in exactly one hour, until then return to your bunks to await further instructions!” You all saluted the captain and walked back to your rooms like you were told. Everyone except for you, as you stopped when Spitfire called your name.

“I better not get any more growls out of you, private. I’ve made it very clear that the Wonderbolts must keep their emotions in check, we’re not training rebels. If you’re listening, I’m sure you can understand why we usually don’t let dragons enter our ranks. If you don’t want to set a bad example for the ones who made it possible for you to be here, control yourself, got it?”

“Yes, ma’am,” you sighed, followed with a salute.

“Good. Now off you go,” she said.

Walking back to your bunk, you knew that whether it was intentional or not, Spitfire was going to take your aggression into account when deciding your partner. You knew you’ll have to keep your agitation under control. Ember, Imperium and the others were kind enough to talk Spitfire into letting you join the academy. One wrong move and it’ll all be shot to hell. So, in order to keep your cool, you resorted to picturing a beautiful beach while simultaneously doing your breathing exercises.

As you thought, your aggressive behavior didn’t go without some kind of consequence. When forming teams of two for the obstacle course exercises, Spitfire carefully decides who should be the leader and who will be the wing. Not trusting you with being in charge because of your behavior, you were denied the position. On the other hand, your partner was the sweet crimson mare who was chosen last for the Dizzitron. You saw on the wall that her name was Wind Rose.

Going to Spitfire’s office for an explanation, you learned that her reasons for pairing you up with Wind Rose had nothing to do with her having the second best score on the Dizzitron. Your captain told you during the short time she’s known Wind Rose, she could tell she was the most level-headed of this year’s recruits. Being paired up with someone so calm, would help you keep your dragon instincts in control and prevent you from causing another scene.

You didn’t complain about it and just thanked her for the explanation and saluted her before joining up with Wind Rose in the air obstacle course. She was wearing a gold Wonderbolt pin, signaling she was the leader, while your pin was silver, showing you as her partner. To get the attention of any cadets who weren’t paying attention, one of Spitfire’s employees blew a trumpet, only for it to get smacked out of his hand after he accidentally blew it in his captain’s face.

“I hate it when you do that...” she grumbled before turning her attention to all of you. “Okay rookies, as opposed to what you might have expected, you won’t have to worry about time for this exercise. Here on the obstacle course, you will be tested on your flying under extreme circumstances.” Indeed as you looked around, you saw many ways to get hurt here on the obstacle course. This was definitely no playground.

“Everypony, get on your marks!” Spitfire concluded, blowing her whistle and you tagged behind Wind Rose as she took off at the edge of the field. It wasn’t long before you were forced to stop, having approached one of the many devices on the obstacle course. For this one specifically, you could see employees pouring some kind of a liquid into the machine, creating pink clouds to block you. Looking at one of the teams who weren’t being as careful as you and Wind Rose, you saw that these clouds were particularly sticky.

“Hey, I’ve seen how it takes some time to tear your eyes off the captain. There something about her that interests you?” Wind asked, managing to start a conversation once you made it through the pink clouds. Since you were already facing another challenge with a machine firing blasts of pressurized air, you waited to answer until after you were safe.

“Damn, you’ve got sharp eyes...” you groaned. “If you can keep a secret, I guess you could say I like ladies who are strong-hearted and straight-forward whenever they’re reprimanding and being honest. I even dig a lady in a high-ranked uniform. My only concern is whether or not she’s taken.”

Wind giggled at how much you were admitting, but the laughter stopped as the two of you flew into a storm cloud. You both flapped a little harder to endure the powerful wind being blown in your direction, while at the same time making sure not to get separated. After all, the teams have been warned they would be disqualified if they didn’t fly together.

“You gonna ask her out, Casanova?” Wind Rose asked once you made it through the storm and headed toward some hoops.

“When the time is right, I gotta plan how I’m gonna do it after all,” you confirmed. Making your way through the last hoop, you prepared to land. You and Wind were neither the first nor the last team to finish, but Spitfire already told you it wasn’t a race. Even with it not being a competition, you were still panting quite hard from how much effort you had to put. The captain wasn’t kidding when she said you would be tested on your endurance.

“Looking through my telescope, I could see you two were doing a bit of talking when you should have been paying attention the whole time. Wanna fill me in?” Spitfire asked, looking somewhat displeased. You looked at Wind Rose, hoping she wouldn’t make you look stupid by confessing your interest in Spitfire around the other trainees.

“It was just some... friendly advice I was giving him for his... anger issues, you know like meditation and breathing exercises and all that,” she said, covering for you. Judging from how your captain looked at you squinting, she wasn’t that convinced.

“Get to the mess hall and fuel up. I’m far from done with you newbies today,” she ordered and went back to looking at the sky to observe the progress of the teams who haven’t landed yet. Saluting her, you and Wind proceeded to get some lunch, wondering what they would be serving today.

“Thanks for covering for me,” you said as you got your tray.

“You have an unusual taste in mares, but I couldn’t ruin things for you either way. I won’t lie, Spitfire’s attractive in her own way, but not a lot of stallions can handle her. Call it a mare’s intuition, but I think she’s harsh sometimes because she’s hiding her own insecurities.” As the two of you spoke, you sat away from the others and talked quietly. Wind Rose told you just how much she knew about the captain’s love life, making it clear you won’t be the first to ask her out.

“Damn, she really went through that many heartbreaks?” you asked and looked over at Spitfire, who looked the farthest thing from heartbroken as she talked to her employees. One of them in particular got your attention, as she had a unique, rainbow-colored mane, making her stand out above the others.

“Afraid so. On the bright side, while she’s not so successful with romance, she’s still made plenty of friends, including one of Equestria’s best flyers, Rainbow Dash over there. She can get a little full of herself, but she’s very loyal to everypony here. On top of that, she’s even a 1st ranked mom,” Wind said.

“Rainbow Dash has a kid?” you asked.

“Yup, word up here in the clouds is that the boy has inherited his mother’s ego and love of the spotlight, including his father’s courage.” You noticed how Wind Rose just said “boy” instead of “colt” like you had expected.

“What do you mean by “boy”?” you asked, having a good guess where this was going.

“Oh, that’s right, I guess you didn’t know. Rainbow Dash and her friends all married human husbands and as a result, their children are half pony, half human, so we usually call them by “boys” and “girls,” Wind explained. Having met Imperium before coming to over Equestria, you weren’t as surprised about Rainbow Dash’s marriage to a human as you would have been a couple of days ago.

“Wow, I guess you learn something new every day. Anyways, shall we fuel up? I got a feeling this next exercise is gonna really put our skills to the test,” you implied. You were still feeling as sore as you were last night and the day was far from finished. All the more reason, not to go back to your training on an empty stomach.

Now that you were no longer hungry, you and the other cadets were summoned back to the air obstacle course. Though it wouldn’t take a genius to figure out that things would be different this time around. Standing close to your partner as you were instructed, you awaited Captain Spitfire’s instructions.

“At first, I told you guys you wouldn’t have to worry about time out here on the obstacle course. That won’t be the case this time. Instead of all of you maggots flying at one, I’ll be sending out one team at a time to make their way through,” Spitfire said, pausing to take out a timer. “I will be keeping time of each team and you will be forced to keep flying through the obstacle course until you can complete it in under a minute.” Walking side to side, your Wonderbolt drill sergeant here took notice of how sore and tired you all were and scoffed.

“I can’t tell you how important I find it to inform my recruits I’d never ask for something I couldn’t do myself. If you rookies can’t do what’s asked of you regardless of how much pain you’re in, you don’t belong in the Wonderbolts!” she declared. You and Wind Rose were called up first.

“Say what you want ma’am,” you spoke up, getting everyone’s attention. After all, you were talking to the captain. “I told you before, I don’t plan on going anywhere. I’ll keep going even if my whole body aches, ma’am!”

“Save the big talk until AFTER you beat the clock, private. Now... GO!” she shouted simultaneously starting the timer. Having so little time, Wind Rose didn’t stall and did her duty as the leader to get things started. The moment she was off the ground, you took off as well. Your wings shot jolts of pain with every wingbeat, but you clenched your fist and locked your jagged fangs in place.

As hard as it was to tolerate the pain, what was most difficult about flying through the obstacle course was staying with Wind Rose. Just like last time, you were first met by the pink clouds being generated by the employees pouring liquid into the machinery. With the combination of the pink clouds being sticky and your wings aching all over, the chances of avoiding the them are ranging from 30 to 45%. Through some lousy luck, your leg got caught in one of the clouds after it was generated from behind you and if that wasn’t bad enough, Wind Rose was forced to stop due to the rules of having to stay together.

“Dammit...! I got sloppy!” you said, reprimanding yourself.

“Scold yourself later, let’s move!” Wind Rose urged.

With a powerful kick, you managed to free yourself of the sticky cloud and moved on. You made sure you weren’t so careless when it came to your next challenge of getting through the contraption that was releasing waves of pressurized air. It was the next and final task of getting through a bunch of storm clouds, that proved to be the most difficult.

If you had to guess, it’s been about 30 seconds since you started flying. With the powerful winds of these storm clouds blowing against you and Wind Rose, finishing the exercise before your remaining 30 seconds was up was easier said than done. You began to grit your teeth so hard, you feared they might have cracked, or even pierce your gums.

By the time you finished, you weren’t able to do it under a minute. To add insult to injury, Spitfire held up the timer, showing that you arrived fifthteen seconds too late.

“You’ll have to do better than that, private! Stretch out those wings and shake the lead out!” Spitfire shouted, almost causing you to fall down. If anyone was laughing, they weren’t given much time, as the next team got their turn. You took the chance to catch your breath, as even though you and Wind Rose didn’t beat the clock, you wouldn’t be called out again until everyone else got a shot. With the extra time you had, you massaged your wings and stretched them out wide to loosen them up a bit and hopefully get rid of some of the pain.

Besides working out your aching wings, you exploited your break to look at Spitfire as her back was turned. Even after the way she yelled at you, you didn’t feel any differently about your captain here.

‘Spitfire’s got a real rocking bod, that’s for sure,’ you thought. Whether you were looking from in front or behind, you found it almost impossible to tear your eyes away. Eventually, you found the power to look somewhere else before you gave anybody ideas.

Even with your fascination for Spitfire, you paid attention when she gave out the scores. Out of the 5 total teams, only 2 of them made it through the air obstacle course in under a minute. That means until you and the other 2 pairs beat the clock, you wouldn’t be going anywhere. Spitfire walked up to you and Wind Rose, preparing to start her timer again.

“Get ready and... TAKE OFF!” Just like before, Wind Rose unfurled her wings first and you followed suit. As if waiting for you, the Wonderbolts occupying the sticky cloud machine began pouring the liquid to get things started. Mistakes are definitely to learn from, as this time, you looked both back and front to make sure you didn’t get in the clouds from either side. Such caution rewarded you with getting by in less than 15 seconds.

‘So far so good...’ you thought to yourself. Thanks to the massages and stretching you gave your wings, it was slightly easier to maneuver around and fly a little faster, but they still ached anytime you spread them too far.

Just then, while you were flying through the obstacle course, you heard the sound of a machine malfunctioning and make these weird sounds. Turning your attention away towards the sound, you gasped when you saw it was the cloud machine. The whole machine was going haywire, spurting out these lightning storm clouds all over the place. To make things worse, the clouds were going off by themselves, shooting lightning bolts in random directions.

Naturally, Spitfire reacted quickly, sending the cadets to get clear of the lightning. However, when she flew up to get you and Wind Rose, a stray lightning bolt hit her, making her shriek in pain and quickly fall straight down.

“CAPTAIN!!!” you shouted in a panic. Wind Rose gasped and soon you acted on your own, flying down to try and catch her. Wind Rose followed you close behind. It seemed as though Spitfire had lost consciousness from the moment she was struck, as she wasn’t even trying to stop herself from falling.

Without a second thought, you took a huge gamble to save her by folding your wings up for a short time and reached out in front of you as if you were diving. Your trick somehow worked and as a result, you managed to grab Spitfire and spring your wings out wide to slow down. You flapped your wings rapidly a few times when you were just a couple of feet above the ground and made a soft landing.

The other cadets were in shock at the sight of their captain being struck like that and then rescued soon afterwards. It turns out you were right, Spitfire did get knocked out upon electrocution. Of course, that’s not the worst of it. The shock had left her left wing all charred up and smoking. Needless to say, she wouldn’t be flying for some time.

Besides the recruits, Wonderbolts and medics alike gathered around to check up on the captain’s condition.

“Don’t just stand there, get the elite teams to clear the air so I can get her to the hospital! Let’s MOVE! MOVE! MOVE!” you commanded, suddenly talking like you were the captain now. In any case, no one stood against you as you carried Spitfire to the medical room. Her burned wing wasn’t life threatening at the moment, but if you didn’t hurry, the burns would become infected.

Hours went by and as you sat by her bed, you put down the magazine you were reading upon realizing that Spitfire was waking up. A damaged wing was one thing, but if it weren’t for you, she would most likely be dead.

“Ugh... what happened?” Spitfire asked, groaning. “I remember the obstacle course, but after that... my mind’s blank... O-Ouch! What’s up with my wing?!”

“Don’t touch it. You got struck by lightning and almost had your wing struck clean off. Thankfully, the doctors said your wing was still in tact, but you’ll have to take some time off your duties. I managed to catch you just in time before you hit the ground. Just barely,” you explained.

“Y-You... saved me?” Spitfire asked, obviously impressed.

“I wasn’t going to let you just crash out there. You’re too... precious to us,” you said. Spitfire’s expression changed as a blush covered her cheeks. “I know it sounds cheesy, but we couldn’t risk losing such a valuable leader. Despite the harsh training we all went through, you inspired us to become stronger both physically and spiritually. Without you, we wouldn’t be the elite flying team known as the Wonderbolts. Yes, I know some of us are just rookies, but we’re still Wonderbolts nonetheless.”

Spitfire looked surprised to hear how you and the others felt about her accident, but she also felt touched when you told her you rescued her. Looking at her bandaged wing again, she sighed.

“You have my thanks, newbie. Unfortunately, I’ll be forced to have Soarin take over until I get back on my hooves,” she said. Despite your warning, Spitfire couldn’t help lightly poking her left wing and even that slight touch hurt a little bit.

“Hey, if it’s alright, maybe I can come by and check up on you after practice. You deserve that much at least for being a cool leader,” you said with a wink.

“Yeah well, don’t think just because you saved me that this means I’ll be going any easier on you when I get out of here, newbie,” Spitfire said, patting you on the shoulder.

“I hope not, otherwise I’ll be like “okay, what’ve you done with the real Captain Spitfire?” you said jokingly. You shared a good laugh with Spitfire for a while. When she calmed down, she wrapped her arms around you in a passionate hug.

“Thanks for breaking my fall, private. I don’t normally say this cheesy line to anypony but… you’re a real hero,” she whispered before kissing you on the cheek. “Now go on and rest up for tomorrow, newbie.”

After you left the room, you touched the spot where your captain just kissed and slid down the wall you were leaning on. Now sitting on the ground, a single sigh escaped you and you felt pretty lucky. If a rescue won you a kiss from your dream mare, you can only imagine what your hard work will do in her absence. Only time will tell and thank God that you’re a patient man.

Handling the Heat of Romance

You’ve endured 3 weeks of intense training here at the Wonderbolt academy and you could feel yourself slowly getting yourself stronger. Soarin filled in for Spitfire during those last few weeks since she was still recuperating, but he proved to be just as serious about making sure the cadets got the proper training. Sometimes, he appeared to be even more strict than Spitfire, something you originally thought was impossible.

As promised, you also paid a visit to Spitfire every day after training and you even shared stories with her about what went on during your workout sessions. In contrary to the no-nonsense mare you were used to, you shared a few good laughs with Spitfire when you mentioned the embarrassing blunders you made during the early days. No normal stallion, mare, or in your case, guy, would admit these mistakes.

Even if she didn’t admit it, you could tell that Spitfire was impressed by your honesty and diligence. You would be sure to remind her and any of her colleagues if necessary, that you weren’t planning on leaving the academy. She hadn’t seen that kind of tenacious attitude since Rainbow Dash joined the ranks.

Having talked to the doctors, you knew that tomorrow was the day that Spitfire would be released from the infirmary. Hearing this good news got you all riled up and ready to greet her. Of course, to prove that the academy’s training has been successful, you didn’t step out of line with something like cheering. Rather, you and the rest of the cadets stood in a line, saluting Spitfire and welcoming her back properly.

“Good morning, rookies. I trust Soarin did a good job keeping you all of you in shape in my absence,” your captain said, looking at the clipboard in her hands.

“Ma’am, yes ma’am!” you all shouted.

“Believe it or not, boss, these rookies worked extremely hard. Not a single one of them stepped out of line. Anyways, they’re all yours now,” Soarin said with a salute.

“Glad I could count on you, lieutenant. Go ahead and regroup with the others,” Spitfire said and saluted Soarin back before the stallion took his leave. “Alright, you maggots! Now that I’m back in control, you can start this day off by GIVING ME 50 LAPS AROUND THE TRACK!!!” she shouted before blowing her whistle.

By this point, you were pretty much used to receiving these kind of orders, so along with everyone else, you just took off into the sky without making a fuss. While flying, you would occasionally look at Spitfire whenever you ended up back at your starting point. She gave you a wink the last time your eyes met and that left your face burning up a little. And to make things even more awkward...

“Still haven’t asked her out?” Turning, you saw it was your good, but impish friend, Wind Rose who was talking to you. Of course, she spoke quietly so she wouldn’t make you look stupid. “I honestly thought she’d be all over you since you saved her life.”

“You’re forgetting that Spitfire has a way of keeping her cool around her subordinates. She’s not gonna let anyone except herself see how she truly feels,” you whispered quietly. You have just come back around for your 40th lap, only 10 more to go.

“You realize you’re going to be stuck here for another 7 weeks. Are you really gonna wait that long to make a move?” Wind asked.

“No, I’ll talk to Spitfire after practice today. See if she feels the same way about me,” you replied, feeling pretty confident. “Anyway... race ya!” you shouted, as this is how you and Wind Rose usually finished flying laps. Sometimes she won, sometimes you did, it was practically impossible to know what the result would be.

“This one’s mine!” she shouted.

“Oh, I don’t think so!” you countered with a cocky grin. Both of you were flapping as hard as you could while you finished the last lap. And at the end of your little race, you returned to the ground first, with the claws on your feet leaving some marks in the dirt as you slid to a stop. The adrenaline was rushing to your head. “Woohoo, what a rush!”

“I’ll get you next time, hot shot,” Wind said, keeping her cool like a pro.

“Not a bad finish, you two. I’ve had faster recruits, but you’ve at least proven you’re not the slowest rookies in the academy,” Spitfire said. You wondered if that last sentence was supposed to be a compliment. “Anyway, for today’s schedule, you maggots will be going back on the Dizzitron for the highest level. Something I believe we’ve put off for far long enough.”

You thought about what your captain just said. Of course when Soarin was filling in for her, the cadets got more sessions with the Dizzitron, but only at either the slowest or medium speeds. Apparently, the actions of a reckless rookie from a few years back, had convinced Spitfire not to let her cadets try the maximum speed unless she was absolutely convinced that they were ready.

Whether they were confident or not, you all obeyed your captain’s orders and followed her to the where the Dizzitron was kept. The stallion in charge of getting the gadget started, understood his role all too well and stood beside the machine’s levers. After he turned the Dizzitron on and set it to the highest speed where the arrow pointed to the wing and skull image, all that was left was for someone to get on.

“Alright then... you’re up,” Spitfire decided, pointing at none other than you. You spread out your wings, wasting no time flying up to the contraption and strapping yourself in.

“Ready and waiting!” you called out. You were so eager to try out the machine, you almost forgot to put your goggles on. You only had a few seconds to do so before the employee pulled the lever to get the Dizzitron moving. Once it was spinning as fast as it possibly could, you remembered the last time you were on something like this was when you were still a member of the Blue Angels and performed a trick similar to this during a big show back in Jones Beach, New York.

“RELEASE!” That command brought you out of memory lane and you regained focus as the Dizzitron fired you at its fastest speed. This felt harder to get back in control compared to all the other times and you could tell you wouldn’t get the score you were hoping for. It was like the time when you tried to eject out of your jet back home, but ended up dead.

Not knowing how to regain control, you opened up your wings to slow yourself down enough. It somehow did the trick and as quickly as you recovered, you flew back down to the training ground at high speeds and landed while panting heavily.

“Wow... 10 seconds. I honestly thought you wouldn’t make it in half the time. It’s not an academy record, but it’s not a bad timing either,” Spitfire praised and cleared her timer to get ready for the next cadet.

“Regardless... I still got... a long way... to go...” you panted and went back in line.

Most of the recruits were returned to their bunks once you all tried the Dizzitron’s top speed, but you stayed outside due to your plans to ask Spitfire out. The mare was currently writing down the score of a stallion named Storm Striker, who was the last one to get on the machine. Though an impressive flyer, he didn’t do any better than you did, since he ended up recovering and landing after 16 seconds.

“Excuse me, captain, may I have a word with you?” you asked, approaching her only after you were sure the coast was clear.

“Sure private, but make it snappy,” Spitfire said. Even though she made it clear that she wanted you to make this quick, you suddenly found it hard to make your move. Your captain raised an eyebrow, wondering why you were just standing there. “What’s the matter, cat got your tongue?” she asked, revealing the playful side that she only used outside of training.

“N-No, not at all, I just...” you stuttered. You tried to get your act together, but something was preventing you from doing so. In order to get rid of what was holding you back, you did a few breathing exercises and pictured a white, sandy beach. You were relieved it did the trick and now that you felt calm, you looked directly at Spitfire. “Captain, I was wondering if you and I could go out sometime, maybe grab some dinner together?”

“You know, I’ve been waiting for this kind of offer from you ever since you told me how you saved my life. Looks like all that waiting was worth it,” Spitfire said, smiling. “Tomorrow at 8:00 P.M, meet me at the entrance of the Cloudsdale Cafe. Don’t you dare leave me hanging, got it?”

You nodded, amused at she was playfully using the demanding tone of a captain. With that, Spitfire gave you a kiss on the cheek and you took that as permission to return to your bunk and await further orders. Having such a busy training schedule, the best thing about going out tomorrow was that you would only be given half a day to train and then given the other half to do whatever it is you want to do.

Even as you returned to your quarters to take it easy, your mind was racing. You just scored a date with the drop dead gorgeous captain. Putting your hand to the cheek she kissed, this was probably the 20th time you touched that spot. Thank goodness Spitfire doesn’t wear lipstick, otherwise the other cadets would have known something was up.

Forcing yourself to think of something else, you were aware that the next thing on today’s schedule was a team activity where you would be catching the other team’s flag. You’ve only done this exercise once before and you and you weren’t quick enough to reach the flag and thus your team, the blue flags, lost.

Going to the bathroom, you splashed some cold water in your face to refresh yourself. With training resuming in approximately 20 minutes, you were ready to cut ties with your past failures and hopefully use your growing progress to win today’s flag hunt. Smiling at yourself in the mirror, you dried yourself off before leaving the bunks to spend your remaining free time outside.

“Alright rookies, you all know the rules for the flag hunt,” Spitfire said, adjusting her sunglasses. “However, to test how much you’ve improved, we’re going to make things a whole lot harder by having one of your opposing team’s flags guarded by one of our elite Wonderbolts. In other words, the only way you can win this time, is by getting past an experienced flyer. We’ve also installed a few slightly heavy breezes to throw you off course while you’re flying. This exercise will separate the stallion from the colts and the mares from the fillies! Understood?!”

“Ma’am, yes ma’am!” you confirmed as loud as ever. Looking around, you saw that everything for this new version of the flag hunt was in order, including a variety of weather contraptions that you recognized from the air obstacle course. Your attention however, went back to where it was supposed to be when Captain Spitfire was preparing to start the exercise.

“Alright maggots, get set... GO!” Spitfire sent you all off, blowing her whistle. Taking off into the air behind Wind Rose, you scanned left and right, trying to find your first flag. More importantly, you wanted to see who would be guarding them. The two of you searched high and low, yet couldn’t find anything. It wasn’t until Wind nudged your arm that you felt your luck finally begin to turn.

Good news is you found your first flag, the bad news is there’s a total of 7 storm clouds and the wind was blowing rather wild. It’s going to take every ounce of strength for you and Wind Rose to capture this flag. To make things even worse, sitting right beside the flag guarding it, was the elite Wonderbolt. Fleetfoot. It was very unfortunate for both you and Wind Rose. There was only one flag guarded by a Wonderbolt and it just had to be your first one.

You sucked up your frustration in order to keep your head in the game. “What’s the plan for getting past all that?” you asked. You didn’t like to admit it, but Wind Rose was the smarter of the two of you and was quick to come up with a solution for these kind of situations. Even with the nasty storm cloud wind continuing to blow against you, you still waited to hear what she’ll have in mind.

“Honestly... I never thought we’d run into an executive on our first flag...” she admitted and your eyes went wide, seeing that she was stumped.

“Alright, I think I might know what to do,” you whispered. “First, we’re gonna fake her out by going in fast in a double-barrel roll and then at the last minute, we’ll shoot straight up above her and then split. After that we’ll grab the flag on each side, that way at least one of us will get it. If it doesn’t work, we’ll just circle around her until she gets dizzy.”

It was good that you finished explaining the plan when you did, because Fleetfoot was now within earshot. Last thing you needed was for the one guarding the flag to know exactly what you’re up to.

“Ready?” you asked and Wind Rose gave you a nod. Getting ready to execute the first part of the plan, you both flapped as hard as you could toward the cloud Fleetfoot was occupying. The elite Wonderbolt raised an eyebrow, which let you know she was ignorant of your plan. Smiling, you proceeded to take ahold of Wind’s hand and twirled each other in a clockwise formation.

Fleetfoot saw you two coming in fast and braced herself for the impact. At the last minute, you and Wind Rose shot up high in the sky. You dove down on Fleetfoot’s left, while Wind Rose took the right side.

“I see what you’re trying to do. Well maybe it would work on any ordinary flyer, but you’re dealing with a mare who’s built for speed!” Fleetfoot exclaimed, feeling up to the challenge. Unfolding her wings, Fleetfoot flew around the flag at blazing speeds, creating a miniature tornado that blew you and Wind Rose away.

“Damn, she is fast! Now, what are we gonna do?” you asked. You hoped this time, Wind would be the one with suggestions.

“I think I might know how we can beat this! Follow my lead and stay close,” Wind instructed. You nodded in agreement and soon, you followed her up high into the sky and right above the center of the tornado. “On the count of three, we fly down, but we’re gonna have to combine our efforts and spin counterclockwise. That’ll slow down the tornado and Fleetfoot long enough for one of us to grab the flag.”

“Gotcha!” you shouted.

“Alright, here we go,” Wind said, grabbing your hand. “One... two... THREE!” You and Wind Rose then dive straight down into the tornado. You followed it up with a counterclockwise spin just as Wind Rose instructed. Her plan was working, the tornado was slowing down and fading away while Fleetfoot was losing her momentum. Once you both knew the time was right, Wind Rose used her remaining strength to launch you further towards your target.

You flew at full speed and successfully grabbed the flag. “GOT IT!!!” you exclaimed. Once that was done, you extended your wings out and just let the wind blow you high into the sky with your partner. To make it official, you had to return it back to Spitfire, who would probably be surprised you already got past the other team’s Wonderbolt guard.

“Is my Casanova of a partner thinking of the captain again?” Wind Rose teased. It was like the mare could read your mind.

“M-Maybe...” you stuttered with a goofy smirk, followed by a deep blush.

Spitfire was indeed impressed that you got past one of her top executives, but your hunt didn’t end there. Even so, there was only one Wonderbolt guard for each team. Now that you retrieved the flag Fleetfoot was guarding, you wouldn’t have to worry about more executives. Though you did hope that you got your opponents’ last flag before they got past the Wonderbolt who was still on your team. Turns out, the executive on your side was Soarin, who is just as experienced as Fleetfoot was.

It was a tough session, but in the end, your team claimed victory when you caused Fleetfoot to bump into her own teammates on your way back to your base. Fleetfoot was difficult to shake off during the chase, but at least it helped to know that she wasn’t able to think while moving at high speeds. The look on her face was priceless when you shot straight up at the last minute just as a couple of the other team members ran into you.

You’ve definitely gotten even with your rivals, as even though you lost the last flag hunt, victory was yours today.

“You did good, today,” Wind said.

“We did good,” you corrected with a toothy grin.

“Well done, rookies! That was a fine effort you pulled out there,” Spitfire commended. For a moment, you could have sworn your captain was blushing as her eyes met yours.

“Thank you, captain,” Wind Rose said with salute.

“I also gotta give you your kudos, private. You really had me holding my breath. I thought Fleetfoot had you for sure,” Spitfire said.

“Thanks, but it wasn’t just me, I have Wind Rose to thank. Without her brains, we wouldn’t have beaten the speedster of the elite team,” you admitted. This time, your partner was the one who was blushing.

“Humble as always, aren’t we? Anyway, that’s a wrap for today. All of you return to your bunkers and get yourselves some rest,” Spitfire ordered as she finished writing down today’s progress on her clipboard. You were the only cadet who didn’t follow your instructions, at least not yet.

“So, Spitfire... are we still on for that date?” you asked. She answered your question with a question.

“You’re not having second thoughts, are you?” she asked playfully.

“Not even a little smidge,” you shook your head.

“Then yes, it’s still a date. Just remember to be there on time, I’m not a mare who enjoys being kept waiting,” she told you, poking your chest. “Anything else?”

“Nope, just checking. I’ll definitely see you on our date night,” you said before taking a chance and kissing Spitfire on her cheek. You relished the nice, soft feeling of her fur against your lips as you held it there for a few seconds. When you did pull away, you found yourself at a loss for words from looking at her beautiful eyes.

“Well, well, well, isn’t this something to see?!” The moment between you and Spitfire was virtually ruined when you turned to see Fleetfoot. It was obvious from that smirk, that she had seen the whole thing. You’ve done a remarkable job keeping your temper in check all this time, but eavesdropping on your private moment was the breaking point.

“CAN’T YOU TELL THIS IS PRIVATE?! KEEP OUT OF IT!!!” you shouted and small embers escaped your mouth with each word. Impressed and scared at the same time, the Wonderbolt executive got the hint and flew away before things got ugly.

“Calm that tone of yours kid, or you’ll be put through overtime,” Spitfire said, amused. Lucky for her, the moment Fleetfoot was out of sight you had already cooled down.

“I find it harder to decide if I’m more embarrassed now or before,” you said with a chuckle. “I think you should know this is going to be my first time going out on a date.”

“If it makes you feel better, out of all the dates I’ve had so far, you’ll the only one who knows how to have a good time,” Spitfire said. At that moment, you wondered if you should also admit that you were aware of her unsuccessful lovelife. You knew that doing so, would naturally get Spitfire curious and she ask who told you such things.

“Out of all the dates? Damn, you must be really attractive to win the hearts of so many stallions. I guess it’s no surprise, considering how gorgeous you are,” you said, earning a light punch from the flustered mare.

“Just shut up and get to the bunkers, soldier,” she chuckled. You shrugged it off and waved goodbye to your captain and soon to be marefriend before heading off like you were ordered. Truth to be told, you were more eager for tomorrow than you have been in a long time.

Despite Fleetfoot overhearing yesterday’s conversation, none of the other Wonderbolts seemed aware of your date tonight, since none of them asked about it. After another hard day’s work, you joined up with Spitfire at a nice, fancy restaurant called Gourmet Cloudsdale. Actually to be more accurate, you made a quick visit into town to buy a suit with the bits you got from Ember and then met up with the Wonderbolt captain.

“Nice to see you’re a man of your word. And those are some pretty sharp threads,” she complimented.

“Look who’s talking. That’s one gorgeous dress you’ve got on there,” you replied. What you said was the farthest thing from an exaggeration. She wore a silk, red, sleeveless dress with the addition of that lovely necklace that had her cutie mark embedded in it. “Dragon Lord Ember gave me a good amount of bits before I left the Dragon Lands, so I’ll cover everything.”

“That’s good to hear. Shall we head inside?” Spitfire asked.

“Of course,” you smiled. You opened up the door and even with half of you being a dragon, you still acted as a gentleman and allowed your date to walk inside first.

“Table for two?” the stallion behind the counter asked, stroking his mustache.

“You got it, Taste Bud,” Spitfire said, apparently knowing the host.

“Is he a friend of yours?” you asked.

“The two of us go way back, kid. Let’s get our seat, then we can begin story time,” Spitfire insisted.

“Right this way, please,” Taste Bud said. You and Spitfire followed him and ignoring the eyes of the other guests, you were given a nice table by the window. Half of you couldn’t really blame that these ponies were looking at you. After all, you were a half dragon man and your date was the renowned leader of the Wonderbolts.

“Here we are,” Taste said. You and Spitfire sat down next to each other before you were given your menus. “Take your time deciding your order, I’ll make sure to have a waiter come to your table in a moment.”

“Cool, thanks a bunch, Taste,” Spitfire said. With a bow, the host returned to his place at the counter.

“So, how did you and Taste Bud know each other?” you asked.

“We used to be good friends and played together almost every day. However, it was hard for me to keep seeing him because of my overprotective dad. Yeah, I was one of those fillies who had overprotective daddy issues. It was so embarrassing,” Spitfire said and squeezed her forehead.

“Damn, was he that much of a buzzkill?” you asked.

“Afraid so, he kept me on a tight leash. Mom, on the other hand, was the exact opposite. She gave me a fair amount of liberty growing up. But that wasn’t enough to stop my dad from keeping the colts away. My mom couldn’t stand his overprotective attitude over me, always using the “I’m just protecting my little girl” excuse. Eventually, things escalated to the point where she and dad got a divorce.”

You couldn’t keep your mouth closed any longer, due to how similar you and Spitfire’s parents were with only one major difference.

“Sounds just like the problem I had with my mom. She wouldn’t let me out of arms length while I was growing up. My dad was always the supportive one. He was excited about how I wanted to join the Navy as a member of the Blue Angels. My mom was way too scared to let me join and was totally against the idea,” you explained.

“Sounds like you and your dad were pretty close. Maybe he could teach my dad a thing or two about parenting,” Spitfire said with a shrug.

Ending the conversation at least for now, you both took a look at your menus. It still surprised you that in a world of talking ponies, they actually serve meat now due to all the recent humans that have been stranded here. Because of this, you were sure your beautiful date here wouldn’t be too disgusted by your choice to order the grilled king crab. Spitfire on the other hand, seemed to have decided on the vegetable clam chowder bowl with a glass of wine.

You picked the right time to decide what you wanted, as you could see your waiter approaching your table. She was a unicorn mare with a orange coat and had a baby blue mane.

“Hello, my name is Pumpkin Harvest and I’ll be taking care of you,” she said sweetly and got out a small notepad and pencil. Knowing the drill, you told Pumpkin what you wanted to eat and returned your menus. Spitfire told what she wanted and gave Pumpkin the menu afterwards. “Thank you, I will have them delivered to you as soon as possible. Would you like anything to drink in the meantime?”

“Sure, a tall glass of water will do the trick. I can’t drink when I gotta be prepared for practice,” you said and with that, the mare left to retrieve the refreshments.

“So back to what I was saying, what are these Blue Angels like? Were they anything like the Wonderbolts, or were they completely different?” Spitfire asked.

“In a way, they’re similar to the Wonderbolts. They perform air shows in several different places. Of course, the only way we usually flew was with jets,” you said. “I had a pretty amazing time as part of the crew, but… one day I had an unfortunate accident.”

“What happened?” Spitfire asked, but you found yourself unable to finish. “What happened?” she asked again, speaking a little louder this time.

“My jet got all buggy and blew an exhaust engine. I tried to eject out of my seat, but it wouldn’t work and I died the moment the jet hit the ocean and exploded. I would’ve died a second time had it not been for Ember changing my appearance a little,” you explained. Spitfire’s eyes widened in shock. “And to make things worse, my parents witnessed my death.”

“Aw man... I-I’m sorry to hear that. I hope your parents are doing alright,” she said.

“I hope so, too. I know that we had our share of ups and downs and I’ll never be able to see ‘me again, but I still treasure the things we did together. Because deep down, I still love them and I wouldn’t trade them for anything or anyone else in the world. I’m sure you feel the same way with your parents, too,” you replied.

“You got it, soldier.” Dropping the depressing subject, you moved to a new and better discussion of what you and Spitfire like to do in your spare time whenever you’re not training. Apparently, the yellow pegasus in front of you had a fondness for pie and taking long naps. Hearing her mention pie, you felt even hungrier than you were before.

Luckily, when your nose caught a delicious scent, you turned to see that Pumpkin Harvest had arrived just in time with both of your dishes. “Here you go, you two. Enjoy your meals and have a wonderful evening,” she said.

Taking another whiff, you savored the scent and grabbed your glass. “Well, Spitfire. Here’s to having a fun night between us,” you said.

Spitfire went along, chuckling while lifting her glass of wine. “To us,” she said. The two of you tapped your drinks together and took a few sips before finally dining. Since wine was flammable, you stuck with water, unlike Spitfire. You didn’t want to find out what would happen if a fire-breathing creature like yourself drank alcohol. That, and you didn’t want to wake up with a hangover the morning.

You continued eating dinner went by without any problems and like you said, when you were finished, you took care of the check with the bits you got from Ember. Still, who said your date had to end there? Right now, you were struggling to stop yourself from blushing as Spitfire held onto your arm. Neither one of you protested against an evening stroll through Cloudsdale, even if some ponies were looking at you. It wasn’t going to ruin your time alone with the captain.

“This place sure is beautiful, isn’t it?” you asked, hoping to start a conversation to divert your attention away from Spitfire’s huge bust pressing against you.

“Is that even a question?” Spitfire asked, smirking. “By the way, thanks for paying. You really saved my flank back there. If I was the one who had to handle that check, I’d lose what’s left of my bits and not be able to get groceries.” You chuckled a little bit.

“Always happy to help. Though, now that I think about it, Cloudsdale may be beautiful, but it pales in comparison to how beautiful you are,” you said.

“Is that so? Care to prove it?” Spitfire asked. Cupping her cheek, you pull her in a little ways while you moved yourself closer to her and planted your lips onto hers. Her eyes went wide for a second, but she closed them once she adjusted to the unexpected kiss. And for the icing on the cake, you gave her a warm hug with both your arms and your wings.

Shielded from anyone who might be nearby, you paid no attention to how long you held the kiss. After a good long minute, you let Spitfire’s lips go and folded up your wings. “Is that proof enough for you?” you rhetorically asked, brushing her cheek with a single claw.

“Sweet goddesses, I think I’ve fallen in love...” Spitfire sighed, as if she were in a daze. Her wings spreaded out from the excitement and you could see that her feathers were ruffling. Without warning, she pushed you to the ground and you found yourself kissing her again and again. Needless to say, you were going to be here for a while.

By the time, you stopped making out, the sun was nowhere to be seen. Planting your last kiss for the night on the captain’s forehead, you helped her back onto her hooves.

“Wow... you’re a really good kisser...” you said, still in disbelief that you’ve been kissing her for that long.

“So you admit I’m better than you at it?” Spitfire asked, smirking. You were fond of the mare, but you weren’t going to agree to that.

“You kidding me? I kissed you way better. I saw how you melted away during our little session,” you said, booping her on the nose.

“How about this, lover boy. Come by my house some time after your basic training graduation, then we’ll see who’s the better kisser,” she cooed. Pulling your arm and leading you back in the direction you came, you wondered if there was something she wasn’t telling you. Such curious thoughts were interrupted when you once again felt Spitfire’s impressive pair of breasts press against your arm.

‘Why do they have to be so soft...?!’ you thought, swallowing hard. You only hoped you could make it back to the academy without looking like a complete idiot.

Basic training continued at the academy and so did your relationship with Spitfire. Today, pretty much both the executives and the recruits were aware that you had feelings for their captain. Thankfully, they took it from Fleetfoot that you had a short temper so you rarely got teased as you went on with your training.

Today was especially special, as after 10 weeks of unbelievable aerial exercise, you had graduated and would be getting your first performance in Manehattan. Of course, you haven’t had the time to pay a visit, but apparently, it’s one of the biggest cities in Equestria. You were just about finished with your time in the shower, making sure to get yourself refreshed before your big day. After turning the water off, you admired how clean and shiny your scales looked for a second before stepping out with a towel wrapped around your waist.

“Feeling a little better, kid?” You saw that sitting on your bed with her legs crossed was none other than your fiery lover. You rolled your eyes, wishing she’d stop calling you that.

“Yup, it sure feels great to have a clean body,” you answered, once again looking at your scales. “Don’t take this the wrong way, but what are you doing here?” With a smile, your marefriend reached behind her and presented you with a jacket.

“Wanted to make your place on the team official, Blaze,” she chuckled and you took the jacket and gave it a good look. At first, the name Blaze was just an affectionate nickname Spitfire gave you. However, it turned out every Wonderbolt has screwed up in a way and therefore given a nickname to match the mistake. In your case, whether or not by coincidence, the others started calling you Blaze because of your temper and how one time, you couldn’t stop yourself from accidentally setting one of your teammates’ bed sheets on fire.

“It’s a perfect fit!” you happily exclaimed after trying on your gift. It was true that you were a little embarrassed that the jacket had your nickname, as well as a picture of flames sewed onto it, but it was still a thoughtful present. Seeing how happy you were, Spitfire gave you a quick peck on the lips.

“Glad you like it, Blaze. I know it’s not the best nickname, but it’s much better than what my comrades call me,” she said and whispered the name into your ear. Your eyes went wide from what she just told you and you felt a lot less embarrassed and more relieved about what you did to earn you your nickname.

“Well... I’m gonna get dressed... I’ll meet you and the others shortly...” you awkwardly said, desperate to end the conversation after hearing a very unusual name.
