//-------------------------------------------------------// Fashionable Justice #1 -by cmfunk- //-------------------------------------------------------// //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter One //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter One It was a wonderful evening in Ponyville. All the stars are in the sky, and Luna's moon is as bright as ever. The moonlight shined upon the two mares exiting the local spa. They were very appreciative of Luna's night. Their usual spa date had to be held much later than usual due to Fluttershy being busier than usual taking care of her animals. Normally, Aloe and Lotus would refuse anypony coming in for a spa treatment but considering Rarity was their best customer they could make an exception. "Fluttershy, thank you for accompanying me darling."  said Rarity "I always enjoy our trips to the spa," "Oh, your welcome Rarity I enjoy our spa trips too." Fluttershy said with a small smile. Rarity has always been enamored by Fluttershy's personality. She didn't know how one pony could be so sweet and so gentle. Rarity had never meet anypony that was more willing to sacrifice for others. It was unsurprising that she was chosen to be the element of kindness. Rarity was admittedly a little jealous at how Fluttershy  didn't have to try to express her element it just came naturally to her. Rarity on the other hand did give quite a bit but not as much as the Element of Generosity should. Rarity quietly pondered this to herself when Fluttershy stopped. Rarity was going to inquire why she had stopped when Fluttershy trotted over off the beaten path to an open area of grass. Rarity followed the yellow mare when she eventually saw what Fluttershy was after. A bird was on the ground with a very grave injury to his wing. Rarity noticed it had also sustained damage to it's head that didn't look like it had come from the fall. While Rarity thought this over Fluttershy set to work trying to help the poor animal. It's wing was severely injured and even if it did survive it would likely never fly again. Before long Rarity could tell it was no use trying to help it. The bird was dead. Fluttershy was at the point of tears when they both heard voices. "I thought I saw the stupid thing go down over here" one of the voices said. "That was a great buckin' shot Chain" said another voice. Rarity counted three in total. Rarity deduced fairly quickly that these fools had something to do with this now deceased creature. Rarity also knew that if she had pieced this together Fluttershy had as well. Rarity was about to turn to Fluttershy to try to calm her down when the three voices were upon them. The group consisted of two colts and one mare. The mare looked (in Rarity's opinion) very trashy. She was a unicorn with a gray coat, her mane was cut in a multicolored mohawk, and she had a rather threatening looking chain for a cutie mark. The two colts were both pegasi and they looked identical except for the color of their coats. Both of their manes were shorter than average but came down over their eyes, which made Rarity wonder how they saw things. Before she could wonder any further the mare stepped forward. "And what do we have here?" she asked. When no answer came she stepped closer. "You two do know it's rude to not answer somepony when they ask you a question, right?" "Did you hurt this bird?" Fluttershy asked without looking up from the deceased bird. Rarity noticed the slightest hint of menace in her voice. One of the colts answered for her "Yeah, she threw a rock at it!" he said gleefully "It was a great shot too ,look, she hit it right in it's buckin' head!" Fluttershy looked up at the mare with fire in her eyes. "You killed this poor animal." she said in a low growly tone. Rarity had never seen Fluttershy this angry before, it seemed unnatural. The mare however, seemed nonplussed. "Aww, is the little mare mad about the dead birdy?"  she asked mockingly. "I should apologize." she then looks down at the dead bird "Hey pal, sorry we had a falling out, could you forgive me?" she looked back to Fluttershy. "All better?" The two colts cackled and Rarity saw Fluttershy become a mass of barely contained rage. She was going to urge her friend to remain calm, when the mare started to go after Rarity. "You never did answer my question. What are two pretty little things like you doing out after dark?" she inquired. Rarity took offense and finally spoke."If you must know, my friend and I have just come from the spa." she says. "Oh, you two just got outta the spa?" she mocks. She motions towards the bird "You should have brought him with you, he looks like he could use a spa day right about now." That was the last straw. Fluttershy jumped to her hooves and began to move towards the mare. "You think killing things is funny?" she asked in an enraged tone."Well I don't. And it's ponies like you that make the world a worse place to live!" The mare with a chain for a cutie mark is legitimately surprised by this. That look of surprise soon turned into furious anger. She then spoke to the identical colts. "You hear that?" she asked them "She just insulted us." she then lifts something Rarity cant see out of a saddle bag. "Let's show these two how the cloud-nines deal with ponies who insult us."The two colts then commenced to grabbing Fluttershy and holding her down. "Unhoof her you-" Rarity was cut off by a hoof hitting her in the mouth. Rarity went down but she was still fully conscious if not a little dazed. The mare stood over Rarity and had something in her magical grip. Rarity was trying  to figure out what it was, when it came down across her back. She had figured out what it was. A chain. The mare apparently called Chain brought her chain down across Rarity's back once more causing Rarity to scream and writhe in agony. Chain brought down the chain on Rarity approximately five more times before turning to Fluttershy. Who had since dropped her look of anger and concern and instead had a look of fear and concern. She yelled and screamed for help as Chain smiled. "Nopony is gonna come help you little birdy." her maniacal grin grew deeper "Now I think it's high time you had your wings clipped." Rarity was numb from the pain of being whipped but tried to get to her hooves nonetheless. Chain saw this dismal display and laughed. She then struck Rarity in the jaw once again bringing her down. Chain then pulled another chain from her saddlebag which she used to hogtie Rarity. "I have to make sure you're comfortable while you watch what I do to your friend." she sneered. She then approached Fluttershy who was still being held down by the two colts." I'm gonna make sure both of you remember this for the rest of your lives." Rarity was powerless to help her friend, she could do nothing but weep and beg Chain to show her friend mercy. Eventually the only sound left was Rarity's begging, Fluttershy's screams of agony, and Chain's maniac laughter. When they were finished with Fluttershy the mare struck Rarity one last time for good measure and retrieved her chain. They just left the two laying there as lifeless as the bird, both of them unconcious. Chain was correct when she said that Rarity would never forget this. //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter Two //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter Two Rarity awoke in Ponyville hospital. She took a brief moment to take in her surroundings before she recalled the events of the previous evening. Her eyes began to brim with tears as she feared the worst for her friend. She called frantically for anypony to come and help her locate her friend. Eventually, Nurse Redheart came in to see what the commotion was. "Redheart, thank goodness your here I need to see Fluttershy at once!" Rarity said. Rarity tried to sit up as she said this but a crippling pain shot through her body forcing her to lay back in her bed. "Miss Rarity, I need you to calm down and take it easy." Redheart said soothingly "Fluttershy is in intensive care right now and cant have any visitors." she said. "Besides, you straining yourself is not going to help her." Rarity was going to object but saw that it was no use. Since Rarity was awake Redheart figured it a good time to run some diagnostics. She started by shining a light in both of Rarity's deep blue eyes. Then she moved on to checking Rarity's heartbeat. She made some notes here and there and then left Rarity be. After the nurse left Rarity was lost in her thoughts. Most of these thoughts were of her friend. Is Fluttershy going to be okay? Rarity had no idea. Rarity briefly cast her thought's on the mare that had did this to them. The one called Chain. She would be lying if she said she wasn't thinking about retribution. She would be lying if she said the thought of paying her back for every moment of pain she had caused Fluttershy. Her thoughts of vengeance were cut short when a colt came in her room. He was a strange sight to behold that much was certain. He was an older colt, most likely past retirement age. He was portly and had very little mane to speak of. The hair he did have was covered up by an old style fedora. Rarity thought he looked like a character right out of a mystery novel. Sure enough he lifted his hat with magic to reveal himself as a unicorn. "Good morning ma'am, my name is Case Closer I'm a detective." he said and held up a badge to prove it. "I'm here to investigate you and your friends assault, if this is a bad time I fully understand." "No that's quite alright Detective Closer, I would be happy to answer your questions." Rarity said. Case nodded with a smile and used his magic to pull out a pad and pen from his saddlebag. "Wonderful, first question, did you see the pony or ponies that attacked you." he asked. Rarity thought for a moment and answered. "Yes, there were two pegasus colts and a mare called Chain." Case grimaced at the name, he was clearly familiar with her. "Alright, that's very good you remembered all that. It helps. Truly." he said. How could I ever forget? Rarity asked herself. Rarity then thought about the damage she herself had sustained. 'Detective Closer, would you please help me out of bed?" she asked. Case seemed apprehensive but he agreed and helped Rarity to her hooves. When she got out of the bed she stripped off the gown the hospital provided. Underneath were bandages around her back and ribs. She used her magic to peel off the bandages to Case Closer's protest. She paid him no mind as standing was a strain due to her injuries. She then asked Case if he would be so kind as to find her a mirror. He begrudgingly complied and managed to find her a small personal mirror. Rarity was aghast at the state she was in. Her mane was a bedraggled mess and her face had two large purple bruises. These became the least of her worries when she saw the marks on her back. They were deep red and had the imprint of a chain. She could tell there would be at least some scarring. Rarity was once again at the edge of tears but tried to remain strong. Case Closer tried to be polite and not observe Rarity's injuries but curiosity got the better of him. Case frowned at the sight of her extensive injuries."I think it would be better if I left now." Case placed his notepad and pen back in his saddlebag and placed his hat back on his head. He then made for the door but Rarity had one last question for him. "Detective Closer, does the name cloud-nines mean anything to you" she asked. Case shifted and sighed before answering. "Yes it does, the cloud-nines are a new gang that we first clocked a few months back. You can probably tell that this is not the first case like this Ive dealt with." he stopped to think for a moment. "That mare Chain has been involved in multiple cases involving this gang. However, due to all the evidence being circumstantial we've yet to get a conviction." Rarity took this in and Case added one last detail. "Your friends are in the waiting room. I will let the nurse know your ready for visitors." Rarity muttered her thanks and Case took his leave. Rarity thought briefly about this apparent gang the cloud-nines until her friends entered the room. They were led by Equestria's newest princess Twilight Sparkle. Their usual cheerful expressions had been traded in for red tear stained eyes and grim looks. Rarity heard them all ask her if she was alright. Rarity heard them express their sympathy for her wounds. She heard them but she wasn't listening. There was only one thing on Rarity's mind. "I want to see Fluttershy." //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter Four //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter Four The time had finally come. Fluttershy was out of intensive care and was in stable condition. This meant Rarity and the other elements would be able to see her. The nurse insisted Rarity be escorted to Fluttershy's room in a wheelchair. Rarity saw no need to object as it still hurt to stand. Once they had Rarity in a chair, the elements made their way to the wing of the hospital Fluttershy was in. Rarity took notice of the fact that the wing Fluttershy was in looked much more severe. Instead of having ponies with broken bones and other assorted non-life threatening afflictions. All the ponies Rarity saw here looked as if they had one hoof in the grave so to speak. This entire wing made Rarity feel ill. She imagined her friends were not fairing any better. One look on any of their faces would confirm this theory. Even Pinkie with her naturally cheerful nature looked as if she was a different pony, with her normally curly pink hair falling down around her shoulders. Rainbow Dash was putting on a brave face as she would, but anypony could tell even she was nearly at the breaking point. Princess Twilight looked much more presentable but seemed just as concerned as anypony else. When they finally arrived at Fluttershy's room they all hesitated. They were all afraid of what they were about to see. All they could assume was that her condition was bad, very bad. Twilight finally stepped forward to open the door to the room, and everypony entered. What they saw was worse then they could have possibly imagined. Fluttershy looked very pale and sickly, her mane was frazzled and unkempt, and she was covered in bruises and cuts. There was nary a dry eye in the room. The elements could do nothing but stare in woeful awe at the sight of their broken and helpless friend. After a few minutes of agonizing silence, Rainbow Dash couldn't stand it anymore and decided to leave the room. Pinkie Pie followed behind her thinking it was best for her to comfort her friend. Only Twilight and Rarity remained. Rarity couldn't stand to see sweet innocent Fluttershy unconscious, and hooked to all these ugly machines. But at the same time she felt as if she could not leave, as if she were transfixed. Twilight put a hoof on Rarity's shoulder for comfort, but it had no effect. Rarity had tears streaming down her face completely smearing all of her eye makeup, but Rarity at the moment could care less. All that mattered to her was that her friend was nearly killed and is now in the hospital. Rarity could also not help but feel a sense of guilt. Could I have done something to save her? Did I not try hard enough to help her? Rarity began to ask herself all these questions an couldn't help but believe the answer to them was yes. Fluttershy is here because of my ineptitude Rarity thought. My ineffectiveness in any sort of confrontation has lead to this. These thoughts made Rarity weep all the harder. Twilight finally spoke up "Rarity, this is not going to help anypony. Why don't we just head back to your room?" Twilight suggested. Rarity thought this over momentarily before speaking. "I want to go home." she said after some thought. Twilight was taken aback by this statement. "Rarity, you were attacked just last night you cant just leave after a few hours." Twilight stated plainly. "I am an adult, and they cannot hold me here against my will." Rarity said "Therefore I want to leave this awful place so I can go home and sleep in my own bed in my own home." Rarity stated. Twilight looked disconcerted by this but she finally sighed and gave her answer. "I suppose your right, Ill ask the doctor to fill out your discharge papers." Twilight said. "It might take some convincing to get him to discharge you this early, but I am a princess so I think he'll come around." Twilight said with a smile. Rarity couldn't help but give a small smile at this before her gaze returned to her fallen friend. Twilight then left Rarity's side for a few minutes to get her release papers leaving Rarity alone. Rarity continued to gaze at her friend. All of a sudden Rarity had the urge to rise from her chair to stand by her friends bedside. Rarity began to gently stroke Fluttershy's mane while thinking to herself. It's my fault your here Rarity thought. Rarity then began to think about Chain and this supposed gang the cloud-nine. She thought about how many other ponies had gotten this same treatment from them. How many ponies had they hurt or killed? Fluttershy alone seemed far to many to Rarity. Rarity then began to consider her options, she could stand by and let the authorities handle things. Of course the authorities have been unsuccessful at stopping these "cloud-nines". Rarity then thought about another option she had come up with. What if she didn't just sit back and let the authorities handle it? What if she decided to take the law into her own hands? But all these thoughts were flawed in their logic. How could a fashion designer ever be taken seriously as a threat? Everypony in Ponyville know who Rarity was and what her personality was like, so what would these gang members have to fear from her? This question stumped Rarity. Rarity also thought about how absurd the idea was, becoming some kind of vigilante for justice seemed borderline insane. But then a memory came to Rarity. The memory was of Rainbow Dash letting her ego get the better of her. Rainbow became unbearably braggadocios and the other elements of harmony devised a plan to teach her a lesson. They came up with a hero persona and asked Rarity to make the costumes. The plan worked well enough and things went back to nomal. Rarity's friends had no desire to keep their costumes so they gave them back to Rarity to recycle for future designs. Rarity remembered taking them all apart to use later. All but one. Rarity decided to keep one costume for nostalgia's sake. This gave Rarity an idea. Not one of her usual ideas that involved dress design but a very dangerous an potentially life-threatening idea. Rarity then began to ponder all the times she was useless to help. She couldn't help Ponyville during the Parasprite infestation. She couldn't help Equestria from the sleeping dragons smoke. She couldn't help Swetie Belle when she was bullied. She couldn't help her friends against Discord. She couldn't even help herself when she was abducted by Diamond dogs. No longer thought Rarity. No longer shall I stand to the side and do nothing to help ponies in need she thought. If evil-doers like this Chain aren't scared of my face I'll wear a new one. Rarity then quietly spoke to Fluttershy "Fluttershy, I don't know if you can hear me. But I promise you that I will find who did this." she paused to find the right words "I couldn't protect you, that feels absolutely unacceptable and I shall not rest until I make things right." Rarity paused again this time to blink back tears. "I realize you would never approve of such actions, but I have to bring Chain and all of these wretched gang members down to protect you and everypony else I care about from harm." Just as she finished her statement Twilight returned followed by a doctor. He carried papers on a clipboard in his mouth. Twilight explained Rarity would need to fill these out before she could leave. Rarity took the clipboard and pen and filled out the form. She then returned it to the doctor who looked it over and tried one last appeal to Rarity. "Miss Rarity I ask you to reconsider, you still have a considerable amount of bruising and-" he was cut off. "Doctor I very much appreciate your sympathy but I believe I could heal best in my home." she continued "Now is that all, am I free to leave now?" The doctor frowned but answered nonetheless "Yes, you may leave whenever you wish." he then made for the door "I have other patients to attend to, good day ladies." he said before leaving. Twilight then spoke to Rarity. "I'm guessing you'll want to leave immediately so I would be happy to walk you home." Twilight said with a somber smile. Rarity nodded and tried unsuccessfully to return the smile. Twilight then made for the door but Rarity stopped. "Twilight, before we depart could I have a private moment with Fluttershy?" Rarity asked. Twilight nodded and waited outside the door. Rarity approached the bed once more. She gently nuzzled Fluttershy's mane and whispered in her ear. "I will keep my promise." When Rarity was finished embracing her friend, she exited the room. Leaving the room silent save for the sound of the ugly machines Fluttershy was attached to. Upon exiting the room Rarity rejoined Twilight. Rarity desperately wanted to leave this place so she tried to make her walk look normal so as not to let people on about the pain she was in. This seemed almost an exercise in futility as the pain in her back and chest were immense. Rarity did not see Rainbow or Pinkie so she assumed they had found seeing their friend like this was to much. Rarity for one did not blame them. The conversation on the way to the carousel boutique was kept to a minimum. Partly due to the situation with Fluttershy partly due to Rarity being in pain from walking. When they arrived at the carousel boutique Twilight had one last thing to say. "Rarity I cant imagine whats going through your head right now. But just know were all here for you Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Pinkie, and myself were all here for you. Were your friends let us help you." Twilight said this and embraced Rarity. Rarity returned the embrace and thanked Twilight one last time before she left Rarity to her own devices. Once inside the boutique Rarity spoke to herself. "Believe me Twilight  I know you are all hear to help me." She began to make her way up the stairs to her work room. "But the question right now is, can I help any of you?" She entered the work room and made her way to the closet in the corner and began to dig through it. "I am the Element of Generosity after all." She finally found what she was looking for a small box containing the one costume she had saved. She used her magic to pull the costume out and observe it. She would have to make some alterations here and there but it would serve its purpose. "I am the Element of Generosity." she repeated. "And it's time for me to prove it." //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter Five //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter Five Rarity awoke the next morning on the floor. She had spent most of the previous night plotting her next course of action. She stopped to rest her eyes for a moment and the next thing she knew she was staring up at the ceiling. Rarity rose to her hooves slowly feeling very stiff. The bruises and welts on Rarity's back still pained her but she had gotten better at ignoring them. Because of her injuries Rarity devised she should wait for her injuries to heal before she took any physical action. However, this did not mean Rarity would do nothing. She still needed to know exactly who to go after so she needed to do some investigative work. First, she would locate Chain and the two colts. Then, she would go after all the Cloud-nine gang members. This would of course be no easy feat,as Rarity had no idea how many members the gang had or where to start looking for information. Rarity continued to think this over as she looked over her costume. Rarity had realized that when she had first designed the costume, she didn't have physical confrontation in mind. It had very little in the form of protection from attack. The costume obviously would prove useless in combat with gang members. She would have to add some type of armored padding in the near future. Rarity's thoughts were interrupted by the chime over her front door ringing, signaling a customer. Rarity nearly jumped out of her skin at the sound. She quickly replaced her costume in it's box and threw it back in her closet. She then went to her mirror to try and make herself look more presentable. This was no mean feat as her hair was in a tangled mess. Once she was done doing her hair, she applied some makeup to her face to help cover up the bruising. Rarity then made her way down stairs to greet whoever was calling upon her. She was surprised to see her visitor was Detective Case Closer. "Miss Rarity, I'm very sorry to wake you." he apologized "But, when I went to the hospital to check on you they said you had left." Case said. Rarity's brain was hard at work attempting to find the correct response. "Well Detective, my injuries are not so severe that I cant heal right here in my own home." Rarity said. This response made Case Closer frown, "Miss, I think you and I both know that's not true." he said. He then used his magic to retrieve a match and cigarette from his saddlebag. "And to be honest with you ma'am, I can only think of one reason you would want to leave the hospital so early." he paused to light his cigarette which made Rarity frown. "And I can tell you what you may or may not be planning is practically suicide." Rarity forehead began to gather sweat. "Detective Closer I don't know what you mean." Rarity said shakily. The old detective only half smiled at this response. "I'm sure you don't know." Case Closer said as he took another drag from his cigarette. "What you should know is that what your planning is impossible to do without help." Case said. He then retrieved several large folders that were near overflowing from his saddlebag. "Now shall we discuss this over coffee?" he asked nonchalantly. Rarity could only nod and look stupefied. Once they were situated at Rarity's kitchen table they began to go over all the accrued information about the cloud-nine gang. Case's files were spread out across the table haphazardly. Rarity's head was fit to burst with all of the knowledge Case was imposing on her. Rarity only began to speak of Chain. He slid a mugshot of Chain across the table to Rarity. "This as you know is Chain, she is a very accomplished criminal." he paused "Her crimes include but are not limited to; assault, battery, assault with a deadly weapon, robbery, breaking and entering, and unpaid library fines." he said. Rarity frowned at Case's joke and he gave a nervous smile. "Tough room." he said. "Detective, not that I admit to planning anything but, why are you trying to help me?" Rarity asked. Case looked out the window thoughtfully for a moment. He then looked back to Rarity again this time serious. "Because I know exactly how you feel. And I know what it is your after." he paused to obtain another cigarette. "And as much as I hate to admit it I cant do anything to the cloud-nine within the confines of the law." he puffed on his newly lit cigarette. "My job title may be detective but I'm in the business of helping ponies however I can, and right now you need my help in a bad way." he explained. "I don't know quite what your planning, but I will try to help you." "Thank you, Detective Closer. I would truly appreciate your assistance." Rarity said sincerely. "Don't mention it." he looked up at the clock mounted on the wall,"I have to go, feel free to keep those files as long as you need. And if you need anything stop by my office." Case Closer said as he got up to leave. Before he left he placed his card on Rarity's kitchen counter. Once Case Closer left the boutique Rarity began to go through the files again. She looked over Chain and the twin pegasi. Neither of them had a known place of residence but all of them had regular hangouts which Rarity found to be convenient. She made note of all the important details she found about the three. This new information instilled Rarity with a small measure of confidence. Not enough to vanquish her nervousness, but confidence nonetheless. Rarity came to stopping point in her research, and looked at her clock. It was a quarter to four, and Rarity still had things to do. She quickly gathered all the papers and returned them to their folders. She then went up to her design room and stored them in her closet. She then tried to make herself look presentable for the outside world. She put on one of her many stylish hats to hide her slightly frazzled mane and donned a slightly ostentatious pair of sunglasses to hide the bags under her eyes. She realized she didn't look her normal fashionable self but she did not have time for that right now. Rarity then attached her saddle bags and made for the door. Rarity's first stop was the Ponyville library. She needed books on a number of different topics such as armor and self defense. Checking out these books would no doubt raise the eyebrows of Spike and Twilight Sparkle who was back in town for the time being. So Rarity was likely going to have to procure them without their knowledge. She didn't like to think of it as stealing, she liked to think of it as borrowing for an undetermined amount of time. Rarity saw a number of different ponies casting glances in her direction as she walked through town. No doubt curious of her current state. Rarity was forced to ignore them and continue towards the library. Rarity still felt the occasional twinge of pain but she was starting to regain her usual composure. Rarity would be operating at full capacity soon enough. After a good fifteen minuets of trotting through town Rarity finally arrived at the library. Rarity stood before the front door of the library, still unsure of her next course of action. She absolutely needed these books, but could think of nowhere else to acquire them. She knew Twilight would figure out her plan if she saw her with them. Rarity finally built up the courage to knock on the library's oak door. To Rarity's surprise it was Spike who answered the door. "Rarity? What are you doing here?" he asked. "Oh, I was just wandering about town, and I thought I would drop by to see my friend." she answered with a nervous smile. "Well Twilight and the others went to checkup on Fluttershy, so I was told to watch the library." Spike said as he looked down towards his scaly feet. "Would you like to come inside?" he asked. Rarity nodded and entered the library. She was counting her blessings that she had come when Twilight was away. All she had to do now was distract Spike for a while. Rarity didn't think this would be much of a challenge considering how well she knew Spike. "So..um... would you like some...ur... tea?" Spike asked nervously. Rarity saw her opportunity. "Why, that would be just lovely." Rarity said. Spike needed no more convincing and he quickly rushed to the kitchen, and more importantly out of sight of Rarity. She wasted little time in searching for her books. She searched high and low through every shelf and found nothing. Rarity feared her search to be hopeless. "Who?" Rarity jumped in fear that Spike had returned, but her fears were put to rest at the sight of Owlowicous. "Oh, Owlowicous darling you nearly gave me a heart attack." Rarity said. Then an idea struck her. "Owlowicous, darling could you find me some books on self-defense and perhaps armor as well?" Rarity asked in a sweet voice. The owl's only answer was another "Who" before flying off to another part of the library. Rarity could only hope he would fulfill her request. It also gave her comfort knowing he couldn't tell anypony. Besides, even if he could, WHO would he tell? Rarity laughed at her own clever joke as Spike returned with a tray of tea. He placed the tray on a coffee table and took a seat motioning for Rarity to do the same. Rarity took her place across from Spike and politely waited for him to pour her a cup of tea. "I hope you don't mind the taste. I'm kind of inexperienced at making tea." Spike apologized. "That's quite alright Spikey." Rarity said. She then brought the cup to her lips to drink. It took all of Rarity's being no to wretch after drinking Spike's tea. It was without a doubt the most horrid substance she had ever tasted. Of course she tried to cover up the displeasure with a smile. She seemed to cover it up successfully as Spike took no notice. It was then out of corner of Rarity's eye, completely out of Spikes field of vision, did Rarity see Owlowicious carrying two books in his claws. The owl seemed to give Rarity a quizzical look, as if asking what to do next. Rarity began to feign coughing and jerked her head toward her saddlebags in the corner. The owl seemed to understand and flew to the corner making sure to be out of Spikes line of sight. He then placed the books in the bag and flew up to the window to perch. Spike ,to busy inquiring on whether or not Rarity was okay during her false coughing fit, took no notice. "Well Spikey-wikey your hospitality is highly appreciated but I must be going now." Rarity said. "But, you just got here. And you haven't finished your tea!" Spike said. "Oh... well... say, what's that over there?" Rarity asked. When Spike looked away Rarity took her opportunity to dump the rest of her tea into a nearby potted plant. Spike turned back around to see Rarity on her hooves attaching her saddlebags. "Oh Spike you just missed it, well I'll be on my way thank you for the tea." she said as she trotted out the door. Spike mumbled his goodbyes and sighed after she left. "Another missed opportunity." Spike looked up at Owlowicous, "Must have been something you said." "Who?" After Rarity left the library she made her way to her last destination for the day. She had to visit Fluttershy again at the hospital. She would have to be quick as visiting hours would be over soon. So Rarity gave what was a little less than a gallop, and made her way to the hospital. It took five minutes at a half sprint but Rarity finally made it to the hospital. On her way in she saw her friends just as they were leaving. They didn't notice Rarity so she decided no to waste time and let them leave. Rarity would rather be alone with Fluttershy anyhow. Rarity signed her name on the form and made her way to Fluttershy's room. She had been moved out of critical condition and was now in stable condition. Once Rarity was outside Fluttershy's room she was hesitant to enter. Rarity had never seen something so heart wrenching as the condition of her friend the day before. But after a few moments Rarity found the courage to open the door. What lay beyond it was a hospital room that was identical to the one from the previous day. Rarity approached the bed where her friend lay. Rarity felt disheartened as she thought Fluttershy was still unconscious. Rarity was startled when she heard a voice. "Rarity?" "Fluttershy, are you awake darling" Rarity asked. Fluttershy's eyes were still closed and she was lying still on the bed but she still spoke softly. "Rarity, I'm so happy to see you." she said so faintly Rarity could barely hear her. "I'm happy to see you too darling." Rarity said with tears in her eyes. "I'm so happy-" Fluttershy said as she seemed to fade back into unconsciousness. Rarity tried in vain to wake her but soon gave up. So instead Rarity sat silently alongside her friend. An hour must have passed before a nurse came in to tell Rarity visiting hours were over. Rarity nodded and gave her friend a slight embrace before leaving. The trot home made Rarity nervous, as it was dark and she was alone. The trot turned out thankfully uneventful and Rarity made it home safe. Upon reaching her home Rarity quickly went up to her work room to study her books. She studied the books for hours before she finally fell asleep at her desk. //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter Six //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter Six The early morning sun shined through the dirty window of a room in a rundown inn. The bed was being occupied by a mare wanted for questioning in an assault case. She couldn't worry about that as she had to plan out a much worse crime. This was no easy feat. She had just finished ironing out the details the night before. This was the first time she had slept in three days. She had done nothing but research and plan in that time. She spent a good bit of it following around one of her targets, to try and learn her schedule. This was when she realized she liked to visit her friend in the hospital alone. The mare made note of this and could only assume she would do it again today. The plan was to wait until her target to go to see her friend and then eliminate them both. The mare obtained a nurses uniform as to not raise suspicion when she entered the hospital. She also managed to get maintenance uniforms for her twin pegasi friends. Her friends are to guard the door, while she is in the room committing the crime. She was afraid she was placing to much faith in her two friends. They aren't what you might call competent. This plan was also full of assumptions. She assumed her target would go alone, but what if she didn't? At this point the mare was willing to cut her losses and kill whoever is in the room. She is desperate and it is either them or her. There is no margin for error. If she failed or botched the job, then her boss would have no problem killing her and her friends. It is quite literally kill or be killed. The mare didn't want to kill anypony, she just wanted them to show respect. That yellow Pegasus mare and her unicorn friend didn't show respect to her and she punished them accordingly. But now her boss was forcing her hoof, if she doesn't kill them they could take it to court and do potential harm to the gang. The mare's head was filled to burst with all of these thoughts as she began to stir in bed. Her body protested getting up but she fought through it and sat up in bed. She observed her dingy surroundings. The inn was far from fancy but it was cheap and they didn't ask questions. She needed a place to stay since she was sure the guards knew where she lived and would be looking for her their. Guards or that old detective she saw go into the white unicorns house. All of the supplies she had gathered were spread out across the room's single table. The mare rose from bed to look them over. The supplies consisted of a nurses uniform, a long razor sharp knife, and the weapon that the mare was notorious for using a chain. She used her unicorn magic to pick up the knife to inspect it. She removed the sheath to inspect it further. It was longer than any knife she had ever seen. This was what she intended to do the job with, even though she had never used a knife for this purpose. She didn't suppose there was a science to it just face your target and stab them. The notion of stabbing somepony made the mare a little sick. She quickly replaced the knife on the table and headed for the bathroom. Upon entering the bathroom she looked over all the assorted beauty products she acquired to aid her disguise. Alongside them was a wig to hide her rather unbecoming mane-style. She had no experience in disguises, but her life is hanging in the balance so she had incentive to not screw it up. The ill feeling began to return so she used the sink to splash cold water on her face. The feeling did not subside, instead it worsened and made her feel sick to her stomach. She stumbled out of the bathroom and sat down on the edge of the bed and took deep breaths. She has to pull herself together. In all likelihood the job would be happening some time today. She was running out of time before Gilda had somepony else do the job and then had her taken care of. Her thoughts were interrupted by an obnoxious knocking at the door. She approached the door with caution and looked through peephole. Through it she saw two nearly identical Pegasus colts. She gave a sigh of relief at the sight of her two friends. She quickly unlocked the door so her friends could enter. "Wow Chain this is a nice place you got here." one of the twins remarked. "Yeah, it's real cozy." the other twin added. Chain was not in the mood for jokes. "Would you two please shut the buck up!" she yelled. "We have to do this job and soon or else Gilda is gonna rip out all of are guts! Do you understand?" Chain asked. The twins nodded their heads simultaneously. Chain took a deep breath to calm herself. "Alright, now that we have an understanding, do you have your uniforms?" Chain asked. "Yeah we got 'em in our saddle bags just like you told us." one of the twins said while rolling his eyes. "Good, do you remember what you two are supposed to do?" Chain inquired. "Follow the mare you didn't put in the hospital, and when she visits the one you did put in the hospital we come get you so you can do the job." one twin answered. "I don't see why you wont just let us go to her house kill her, then go to the hospital and kill the other one afterwards." the other colt stated. This only served to raise Chain's ire even further. "No, you don't understand and that is why I call the shots and you do what I say!" Chain exclaimed furiously. This outburst caused the twins to recoil slightly. There was no way they would argue with her now. Neither of them had ever seen Chain in such a state. They had seen her angry of course, but never like this. "Now I want the both of you to get the buck out of here and to come get me when she is in the hospital!" she gave them her best death glare "You understand?" she asked. The twins could only nod their heads. They then left Chain's room with much haste. Once outside the twins began to talk amongst themselves. "Bro, I just came up with a plan." said the elder of the two. "Alright dude, we really need one of those." said the younger twin. "Go ahead and explain it to me." "Basically, we go kill the white mare at her house." the elder began, " And then we wait 'til tonight tell Chain shes in the room with other one, and then we take them both out at the same time." "I don't know dude this all seems really heavy," the younger said "Chain is our friend!" "I know bro, but its either her or its us," the older one stated "Do you wanna die?" The younger one briefly thought this over and came up with his answer. "That's a good point I guess." "That's right." the eldest responded. "Now lets get going." he said as he took to the sky. His brother followed close behind, leaving the outside of the in empty. Five minutes before in the room next door Detective Case Closer had been staking out Chain's room for at least twenty-four hours. He followed wherever she went, keeping tabs on her every move. She had only left her room twice, once to visit a costume shop, and the second time to go to the local blacksmith. He deduced she was going to disguise herself and then use whatever she had gotten from the blacksmith to kill one of her two victims. He also deduced that her boss whoever it may be was forcing her hand here. He could tell from her expressions and movements that she was frazzled by something. Case was making a few notes in his pocket journal when he heard someone enter Chain's room. He could then start to faintly make out voices. He then looked around him to find something to help him listen. He then spotted a coffee cup, which he poured the contents of on the carpet. After that, he put the cup up to the wall to listen. He heard two voices he didn't recognize. They were presumably the twins he had heard about. "Follow the mare you didn't put in the hospital, and when she visits the one you did put in the hospital we come get you so you can do the job." Case's eyes widened at the explanation of their plan. He realized he had to warn Rarity so she didn't fall into their trap. With this revelation he quickly left the inn and took of for the carousel boutique as fast as his aged legs could take him. Moments after he left the twins left Chain's room and discussed their slight change in plans. //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter Three //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter Three Chains was not looking forward to the talk she was about to have with her boss. After, the events of the previous night, word spread fast about what she and the twins had done. It was inevitable her boss would find out. She was told to report to her bosses "office" immediately. Her bosses office was more like a re-purposed shack on the edge of the Everfree Forest but nopony was stupid enough to question the boss. Chain finally made it to the shack after a long trek. Chain didn't quite feel like getting arrested so she decided to go around the town to get there. This did have the added benefit of letting Chain figure out just what she was going to say. She would be lying if she said her boss was the forgiving type. She arrived at the door to the "office" knocked and waited. "Enter!" came a voice from the other side. Chain very cautiously entered the shack and saw her boss across the room from her sitting behind a desk. Her boss did not look happy. Her boss gestured to a chair sitting across from her. Chain sat down and waited for her boss to speak. "I'm not gonna beat around the bush. You've bucked up.' Her boss said in a low threatening voice. "You have made a mess, and now you have to clean it up." the boss said. "What do you mean?" Chain asked. The boss tapped one of her talons on the desk in annoyance. "I mean now those two mares have enough on us that they could do damage to us on the witness stand." she paused "But their not gonna make it to the witness stand." "You mean we're gonna kill them?" Chains asked. Chain didn't want that, all she wanted to do was teach them respect. She didn't want to murder ponies. Messing a pony up is one thing but murder? The boss went from annoyance to anger. "We're not gonna do anything!" she yelled "Your gonna kill them, or else your gonna become a mess somepony has to clean up!" "But, Gilda-" "But nothing your gonna kill them and soon!" Gilda said rising out of her chair to lean across the desk to glare at Chain. Chain looked at the floor defeated. "Yes Gilda." she said. She then rose from her chair and made for the door. Once outside Chain began to wonder just how she was gonna pull off a double homicide. Especially considering she was pretty sure they were still in the hospital. Chain had never been put in a situation like this. She supposed she would have to kill eventually but she didn't think she would have to do it twice. She figured she couldn't just rush in the hospital. She thought she should take her time. Not to much time or else she'll be the one being taken care of. She didn't doubt that Gilda would order her killed either. Gilda was prone to violent actions. Chain didn't want to think about her razor sharp talons tearing through her flesh. Chain shook off the idea and began to think of secluded places she could go to plan the job. After ten minutes of thinking she had an idea and made her way to her temporary safe-house.
