It was all quiet in the library. The lone ambience of birds chirping outside was the only thing that accompanied her in this current state. In front of her on the table was a slew of paperwork all piled up on each other. She couldn't bear to think that all of his empty paper had to be written on sometime soon, especially so late into the day. Her schedule was ruined.
But before her quill could touch the surface of the blank paper in front of her, a loud ear-piercing cry from above protruded into her delicate ears. Twilight leaned forward instantly broken out of her concentration as the loud high pitched crying continued to fill the air.
"Ugh..."
This was the third time in the same hour that this had happened. She was getting tired of the noise and the constant screaming that all came from the bedroom upstairs. It wasn't her job to tend to things like this, never in her life would she have had to look after her little brother in these troubled times.
Twilight started to mumble under her breath as the pain continued on. She slowly got up from her desk and put the quill back into the ink pot. She then turned round to face the staircase leading to the bedroom upstairs and started to slowly make her way upwards to where the source of all the crying could be found.
The noise and screaming started to get louder with each step closer to the top of the staircase, the pain in Twilight's ears had started to lessen but the volume of the crying was increasing.
At the top of the staircase was a wooden door that stood out amongst the rest of the other doors upstairs. This one was not painted. A shade of white was added to nearly every door in the library to match with the style the building went with, but this door was different. Unpainted, yet decorated by a sign held up by a rope and a single nail through the top of the door with large colourful text on the front.
Cheap plastic images of stars and an assorted range of fluffy animals and letters ranging from different sizes and colours all stuck on the front to show how different it was from the rest.
Twilight placed her hand on the doorknob and began to slowly twist it clockwise. The mechanism inside of the door made a quiet clicking noise and the door slid open to reveal a small room on the other side.
She knew that this procedure wouldn't take very long but it always reoccurred when she least expected it. Her experience with her little brother was rather limiting in the past and with the knowledge that her parents would have done a similar job to this back at home. But it was her turn now to fill the boot and continue on where they left off.
Upon entering the nursery Twilight could hear the desperate wails and crying coming from one side of the room, she inspected the nursery from side to side, looking at the blue wallpaper to looking down to eye up the soft carpet between her toes.
As Twilight walked over to the other side of the nursery with her eyes fixed on the wooden crib all tucked away in the corner of the room. She could see a pair of hands flailing helplessly up into the air as she managed to catch a small glimpse of her baby brother.
She got up close to the crib and leaned over the safeguard to see a little baby boy wrapped in a thick white blanket surrounded by stuffed animals.
" There there... " Twilight leaned forward into the crib, getting much closer to the baby boy still wailing for help. She reached forth and picked up the infant and wrapped both arms around his chest. " Does my Spikey Wikey need a change? " She whispered.
Although she didn't want to, Twilight sniffed the air once and repeated it again when she moved even closer to Spike. No strange smells or foul odours came from him and that was a massive relief.
To simmer his wails for attention, Twilight started to bob the infant up and down to control his cries.
"Do you need your pacifier? I think you'll like that won't you." A little grin popped up on Twilights face for a moment, Spike had clutched onto her with all of the strength that he could muster up. With one arm Twilight leaned down into the crib and saw a purple pacifier embedded within the sheets and the stuffed animals. She picked it up by the handle and slowly guided it into Spikes mouth.
The rubber nipple soon fell in place and Spike closed his lips and began to slowly suckle on it. Cute little popping noises could be heard as she sucked on the rubber in his mouth. His moans and cries soon died down into little whimpers and soft yawns.
"Aww. Does Spikey Wikey love his pacifier?" Twilight couldn't help that her smile was starting to hurt. The sight of her baby brother’s head starting to bob up and down as his eyelids began to feel heavy was always cute.
She started to lower the sleeping infant back into the crib and back onto his big fluffy pillow, first she zipped his purple sleeper back up and then grabbed his blanket and put it over him. Twilight leaned back up and twisted the switch next to the mobile and began to play a soothing tune.
"Sweet dreams Spike." Twilight whispered.
And with that, she left the room and quietly closed the door.
One Hour Later
Twilight let out a little groan of frustration in the middle of her breath, her concentration was lacking and the paperwork was too overwhelming to handle on her own. She dropped her quill on the desk and rubbed her forehead for one last time and leaned back in her chair as a slight pain was erupting in her spine.
Once leaning back in her chair, her mind then came to think of her friends mixed in with the large amount of work she had to do. That wouldn't help; it was paperwork for the library she thought. Only she could complete this, but not alone.
Various thoughts and ideas came into her head and passed by almost instantly. None of them would work.
"Unless..." Twilight gasped. "That's it! Yes! Yes! Yes!" Without even thinking she got up from her work desk and rushed over to the telephone on the wall. She picked up the phone and dialled in the correct numbers and started to cross her fingers hoping this would work.
"Come on... Please pick up!"
...
...
...
"Hello? Yeah. Yeah. Hello. This is Twilight Sparkle."
...
"I need your help."
...
"Come to Canterbury? But it's about the library here in Rumsville."
...
A look of disappointment came of her.
"Sure... I guess I could..." She scratched the back of her head in confusion. "But that would mean..."
...
"6am?! I'll have to change my schedule for that!"
...
"Okay! Okay! I'll do it!"
And with that, Twilight slammed the phone back into its station and let out a loud groan. She started to breathe inwards through her nose and outwards through her mouth in an attempt to calm herself down.
“This is horrible…”
