In the middle of war and strife, there are always politics. The princesses are at war, and the universe being stripped apart as a result.
Factions fight against each other for control over planetary systems and resources, and such endeavors require soldiers. When the soldiers develop a conscious and decide they want out of the lifestyle, they fight back against the system in a desperate fight to obtain a normal life again.
