She chuckled softly (coughing again) and answered, “I figured you'd be at work by now.”
He gently levitated the bowl and set it down on the nightstand amidst the heap of tissues. “What, and leave you here all alone?”
“I'm a big girl, Night,” she said with an incredulous look. “I can take care of my-” A sudden sequence of rather violent sneezes cut her off, and her cheeks flushed red with both embarrassment and fever.
“I can see that,” Night said, trying not to sound too harsh. “Now c'mon,” he said, “you need to get better, hon.” He gestured toward the steaming soup. “Eat up.”
“Yes, Nurse Night Light,” she said with an air of playful sarcasm, and the spoon lit up with her magic. As she shuffled her body around on the bed to face the offered food, she idly stirred the concoction, and Night sat down beside the bed, watching her with the eye of a caretaker. He hated to see her like this, but he knew how stubborn she could be. Her voice cut off his train of thought. “How'd you get the day off anyway?”
“Got a hold of the boss,” he said, watching the spoon circle the edges of the ceramic bowl. “Told him you weren't feeling well, and he said I could take one of the vacation days I hadn't used yet. Especially today.”
Velvet sighed loudly and looked up. The spoon dipped into the bowl, no longer held by her magic, and her face no longer bore a smile. “Heck of a day to get sick, isn't it?”
Night Light stepped closer, put his hoof on the back of his wife's neck, and rubbed gently. “Sometimes you just can't help it, honey. It's not your fault the weather's so up-and-down lately; that sort of thing is bound to make some ponies sick.” He leaned in and kissed her cheek gently. “Besides, you'll be better before you know it.”
Her weak smile returned. “I know, Night, but I still feel like I should be able to at least crawl out of bed on Mother's Day.”
Night Light just smiled back at her, letting the moment pass in silence. Even though she hadn't said as much, he knew that Velvet had been looking forward to the first Mother's Day with two foals in school. Shining Armor and little Twilight Sparkle were growing up far too fast, and Velvet wanted to celebrate any special occasion she possibly could with her babies. “Nothing's the matter,” he said as he turned to retrieve the remembered items. “Just start eating the soup, okay?”
“Okay,” she responded with the same quizzical look, and Night Light briskly trotted out of the room and back into the kitchen. He quickly located what he was after, and less than a minute after leaving, he returned with two pieces of parchment suspended in his magical aura.
Velvet was just gulping down a spoonful of the soup when he entered the room again. “Here we are,” he said triumphantly as he came to a stop beside the bed again. He waved a hoof toward the bowl on the nightstand. “That can wait for a second, honey.” She nestled the spoon back into the bowl as he floated the pages toward his wife. “You have to read these first.”
Velvet captured the papers in her own aura of magic and brought them closer. “What are they?”
“Just read,” Night Light said with a grin.
She brought the first page up to her face, and after two more brief coughs, began to read aloud.
Dear Mom:
I'm sorry you're not feeling good today. We wanted to bring you some breakfast in bed but Dad said you might be contagious so Twilight and I wrote you these letters instead. She wrote hers all by herself too! It took her a long time but I read it when she was done to make sure it was okay.

Besides, Shining and Twilight had left the house while Velvet was napping earlier, the older brother and younger sister making what turned out to be an almost daily trip to the library to satisfy Twilight's near-obsession with books. Night was the only comfort Velvet had at this moment, and he was going to stay with her for as long as was needed.
“Did you want to read Twilight's?” he asked with a smile.
Velvet used her magic to open her nightstand drawer and carefully placed Shining Armor's letter inside. She left the drawer open as she looked back at Night Light and answered, “I was just about to.” A quick blow of her nose later, she levitated Twilight's letter in front of her, and just like with her son's, she read her daughter's words aloud.
Dear Mom
I do not like it when you are sick. It makes me feel sad. When you are sick I can not hug you and you can not tell us bed time stories. Dad told us a story last night but he did not do silly voices and it was not the same. When I am sick you make it go away with kisses but Dad says I can not kiss you right now so I will kiss the paper and you should kiss it too so you can feel better. “Oh, is that the problem?” Night asked, grinning. “I didn't know that was a requirement for story time.”
“Of course!” Velvet said indignantly, though her smile gave her away. “How else are they supposed to tell them apart?”
“I'll have to work on them for next time, I guess,” the stallion said, shaking his head. “You're just so much better at them than I am.”
“And that's why I'm the bedtime story master,” Velvet said, proudly raising her head high and turning her nose up in the air.
It would have looked more imposing if her nose weren't red from the constant nose-blowing, but Night still took a bow and said, “I see now that I am unworthy, oh great reader of the bedtime stories. May I be granted your endless wit and wisdom in this time of dire need.”
The two ponies were having a great deal of difficulty maintaining straight faces. “Fear not, loyal subject.” Velvet brought a hoof up to her chest. “We shall assume the role once more before too long, and perhaps then, we shall train you in the proper technique.”
Night caught Velvet's eyes, and she caught his. After only a moment, their facades broke, and both husband and wife burst into fresh fits of laughter. Night's heart warmed up at the sound of her laugh, even if it was a bit deeper in tone than usual. Cruel reality, however, crashed the party when Velvet's laughter descended into a fit of coughs, and Twilight's letter was placed atop Shining Armor's inside the nightstand as Velvet used her magic to retrieve a tissue.
