I Like Mystery

Knotted Question, a unicorn, had visitied Ponyville today and as he is a strange fellow gave a riddle to everypony he met. He cast a spell on his journal to prevent accidental spoiling of the answers but prying eyes will still find the truth they seek. This is a record of today's puzzles.

Rarity's Riddle:

What gem pretends to be four is six when eaten and ten when watered?

Answer:

Quartz, not easy worth 3 points

Explanation:

Birth stones: April (diamond), June (pearl), October (opal). Quartz is a poor mans diamond, and makes up most sand which when it gets in an oyster becomes a pearl. Chemically Quartz is SiO2 which if hydrated SiO2*nH2O becomes an opal.

Celestia's Riddle:

Your sun produces white light which when passed through a prism give off all the colors of a rainbow except which?

Answer:

Black light (yeah I know black light is UV which is in white light but...ok fine this really shouldn't count) but it does worth 1 point

Luna's Riddle:

A couple looks at the night sky on Hearts and Hooves day and the mare says, "I wish when next the sun sets it could be Hearts and Hooves day all over again."

And the stallion responds. "For you I shall make it so."

Is this possible and if so how?

Answer:

Yes, there are two nights for everyday the early am and the late pm. 2 points sounds fair

Rainbow Dash's Riddle:

Two ponies decided to have a race around a track, a simple 400m sprint. Pony A crosses the finish line first and Pony B wins the race. There was no cheating or penalties. How is this possible?

Answer:

The Starting line is also the Finish line. Just 1 point

Pinkie Pie's Riddle:

"I went to a party and brought three presents one which had a lovely treat and the others a scary trap. I asked my friend to pick one of the presents." Having chosen the one on the left I open the one on the right and a firecracker pops as spring snakes jump out. "Now you may keep the present you have chosen or you can swap it with the other one." What should my friend do and why?

Answer:

Swap presents. I say 2 points

Explanation:

The present my friend did not choose now has a 2/3 chance of being the gift (the original 1/3 plus the 1/3 chance of the trap box) compared to the 1/3 chance of the gift my friend had chosen.

Spike's Riddle:

I have a bookshelf I am arranging it has seven shelves. On the seventh shelf is Unicorn non-fiction. On the sixth shelf is pre-classical literature. On the fifth shelf is comedic fiction. I want to put my reference books on the _th shelf. Which shelf do they go on?

Answer:

The fourth. Just the 1 point

Before time was divided as we know it months were split into a full lunar cycle being 29 days

Beer, wine, and rum get into an argument. Who wins?

Answer:

Rum, for it has the most proof, drinking is everywhere 1 point

Sweetie Belle's Riddle:

It is your name at a party so charming that it is beloved by all. What is it?

Answer:

A Jawbreaker, I don't think its hard so 1 point

Miss Cheerilee's Riddle:

Every word problem is like a riddle and this is a word problem through and through "ELF+ELF=FOOL" Please solve for the variables.

Answer:

E=7, L=2, F=1, O=4, again just 1 point

Twilight's riddle:

Princess Alicorn Twilight Sparkle was given special puzzle. I heard she was once a librarian so I quizzed her with a murder mystery not the who but the how. It should have been standard practice for someone so well read.

"There is dead body in a room, the windows are sealed from the inside and the door is chained and bolted shut." Standard set up for most closed room mysteries. "The murderer is not in this room and the victim is the only one inside, and not the one who locked the door and windows. No magic was used in this murder. I will even go so far as to say it wasn't a unicorn." We can safely say it wasn't Twilight Sparkle who killed this hypothetical pony. "Oh and I suppose I should add, no secret passage ways in case you were trying to go for the easy way out. What is the trick behind this murder."

Answer:

There is no roof to this room and a ladder or wings let the murderer lock the room and leave, 5 points
