Applejack and Big Mac, both bleary eyed but awake were running towards the thunder of hundreds of hooves running at speeds that could tear a town down, Winona in tow. Applejack ran up ahead while Macintosh stayed in behind. The Midnight air was freezing but they were both thankful for the full moon's light.
Applejack started herding the startled cattle off towards the empty fields while Big Mac and Winona kept them in one group. They got the stampeding cows into the coral, but they just charged through the back fence into the Black wood Forest.
"What in tarnation has got them so riled up?" said Applejack. Her coat was covered in sweat. Something must have spooked the ladies something fierce. Steering the steer has never been that hard. She looked back towards the field the gals were staying at for the night. She saw something red moving back and forth, but it was too far to see what it was. She trotted back taking her time while, Big Mac went off to deal with the cows. A hundred yards away from it and she had to stop her self from running away and never looking back. Applejack sat down and curled up in a ball on the spot.
Big Mac calmed the girls down but they kept on talking about something terrible happening. The head count showed three cows missing and he caught sight of blood on few of them. He ran off to catch up to Aj. When he got to the fields he saw her on the floor shaking worse then a leaf in a twister. He tried to calm her down when the swinging body entered his peripherals.
Working on a farm forced them so see certain things you don't want to see, but what he saw was nothing short of evil. The very sight caused his dinner to try to escape. The smell was the clincher. The remains of one the girls were hanging upside down from a bloody vine. What used to be its innards were either on the ground or still hanging from the large slice reaching its backside to its throat. That wasn't the only thing, whatever came by did to her, but his stomach couldn't handle anymore details.
With, Big Mac's help, Applejack turned around to slowly and steadily walk away from the horror swinging from the trees. She looked back scared whatever did this was still around. She focused on the bushes but couldn't help but catch sight of the carcass. She saw on the little skin that was still attached to it, a black star shaped moo mark on the ear and knew exactly who was hanging from tree. She also knew this particular cow had a calf about two years ago. Applejack looked, Big Mac in the eyes and uttered her name. "Moolinda."
His eyes fully opened at the sound of her name. How could he forget her. He was the one that pulled the girl's cart to the hospital after her water broke. She screamed so loud every time they hit a bump he thought his ears were bleeding. Their pace got faster going from a steady walk to a trot, then to a run, then to a straight up gallop as they went to find the herd.
Applejack and Big Mac ran as fast as their legs could carry them and didn't stop until they bumped into the herd nearly causing another stampede. Applejack looked into the crowd of cows each one had tears in their eyes and were scared half to...lets just say they're really scared. She scanned the group, making sure they were each okay. The usually talkative creatures were de-...they were really quiet. The entire field was silent, except for the sobbing coming from the middle of the crowd.
Applejack walked toward the crying and ladies made a path straight to a calf with a black star moo mark bawling her eyes out on the ground. Applejack walked forward in at a steady pace. She may not be some fancy investigator but it doesn't a take a genius to tell you better take it slow if you want to calm them down. Applejack sat behind her stroking the poor things back while she cried her eyes o- She cried a lot. As she stroked her back, her hoof became red with blood. Fearing the poor thing was hurt, she checked to see if anything was wrong. She wasn't hurt but the blood on her back was enough to tell her how it went down.
Whatever killed, Moolinda grabbed her by her back-leg and did the deed right in front of her own daughter. Applejack's eyes hardened with a look of determination and malice. A look that could kill, a better way to go than if she got her hooves on you. She aimed it towards the Everfree forest and knew whatever it was that did this was looking her straight in the eyes. Her look hardened even more, because she could feel the fierce grin on the creatures face all the way from here.
Luna jumped up from the trance-like state, she dons every night, in a cold sweat. She flew out of her sanctuary tower, bursting from balcony in a shower of debris that was once the doors and window to the balcony, and dived straight towards her sister's side of the castle. More specifically her sister's bedroom balcony.
Making no effort to treat her sister's doors any different from her own, she burst through those as well. Scattering glass and door frame all over the marble floor.
"Sister. WAKE UP!" Luna screamed in the royal canterlot voice. Celestia, for all her merits of being prepared for anything, rolled out of her bed landed on her hooves and had her horn and razor sharp flaming feathers at the ready. Luna took hold of the eye cover over her sisters eyes with her magic, pulled it back and let it snap at her war ready sister.
Celestia relaxed and rubbed her eyes after the thwak. Only two beings have or would do that when she was at arms. Discord back when he would wake her up before he started using the darker side of chaos magic and Luna when she charges in her room and breaks her windows. Luna tends to stop caring about keeping entrances intact when something bad has happened so Celestia was still on guard.
"What's wrong, Luna?" she said, still rubbing her sore eyes.
"The Nightmare has returned!" Celestia froze where she sat. "And she's drawn first blood."
