The Wolf and the Unicorn

For the first time in weeks, I managed to get a restful sleep.  The moment my eyes closed, I found myself in a deep forest, light flowing between the canopy in streams.  The only thing that made it strange was the oak four post bed with white silk sheets sitting in the middle of a clearing.

That said, considering who was on the bed, I was perfectly fine with it.

"Luna I..."

Whatever I was going to say was rudely interrupted as I felt her arms wrap around me and soft lips pressed against mine.  Any complaint was forgotten very quickly.

As she pulled away, she said the words that I never expected, but had hoped for.

"I love you Hex."

The moment I opened my mouth to speak, she kissed me again, melting into my arms for a moment before breaking away.

"Luna, I..."

"Before you say anything else, I need to fill you in on what has been happening in Equestria while you have been gone."

The bed vanished with a flash and a couch was in its place.

"Sit Hex.  It will make things easier."

"Luna, you are starting to worry me here.  What is wrong?"

She sighed, rubbing her eyes with a hand.  How she got so natural with human gestures I'll never know.  I will always remember the speech that followed though.

"Temperatures have continued to drop in Equestria.  The first fatalities happened last week in Stalliongrad.  With all the magic we had available we could only keep the city heated barely long enough to evacuate.  Seventy three ponies didn't make it."

Stunned silence was my only reply so she carried on.

"What makes it worse is the fact that an emissary of the creatures doing it arrived in Canterlot yesterday with an ultimatum.  If Celestia and I attempt to flee the city, the same thing will befall Canterlot with a hundred times more force behind it.  We have a week to surrender or they will kill everypony in Equestria."

"THEY WHAT!?"

"Yes my love.  They said that."

The edges of the forest started to shimmer and flicker.

"You are waking up my love.  Stay safe, and come back to me."

"Luna, I lo..."

The forest disappeared into inky blackness around me.

Son of a bitch.

           A world away, a certain Princess looked across Canterlot from her balcony.

           "BUCK!  I forgot to tell him about Discord!"
