In Canterlot the streets were busy with life as the ponies and humans rushed down the streets to get to their various jobs and meet ups. In a small school, not too far off, the bell rang signalling the days end allowing all the children and foals to flee from their educational prison and happily run home. One boy in particular walked out into the air and took a deep breath before letting it out in a relieved sigh. He was the age of ten and had Ice blue eyes along with coal black hair. The black circle that was upon his palms and the tops of his hands were a sign that he was from a family of Mages.

He adjusted the bag on his back before he began walking home to finish up his homework and actually have time to himself. He turned to go down a less crowded street that was quieter than the busy main street of Canterlot, along with it going straight to the living district of Canterlot. As he walked down the cobblestone road, he heard a rather peculiar flapping noise from above him.

“Never seen one of you take my path.” A feminine voice said haughtily as a young skinny girl landed in front of him. She looked to be about nine with jeans and a purple shirt, which had slits in the back so she could open and close her snow white wings, her eyes were brown and her long straight hair was brunette.

“What do you mean ‘One of you’?” The boy asked with a raised eyebrow as he looked at the girl.

“I mean a mage.” The girl said. “Why don't you just use your all powerful magic and teleport home?” The girl made air quotes when she said ‘all powerful’ and smiled. The boy just let out a quiet snort before shaking his head.

“Because I can’t teleport. That is for advanced mages. Why do you ask?” The boy said as he began to walk again.

“Because, I can ask whatever I want.” The girl said, getting in the boys way.

“Oh come on, don’t do this. I’m tired enough from going to school, I don’t need this too.” The boy groaned as he rubbed his eyes.

“Here I thought mages never got tired.” The girl remarked as she opened her wings and flew a few feet in the air to be above the boy.

“You try doing the same spell in a continuous stream and see how long you can keep it up.” The boy snarled as he began to walk again. “Oh wait! You can’t!”

“Why would I want to be a person who ruins the earth with their magic? It’s better to fly, but I bet that you would be afraid of heights anyway.” The girl said haughtily.

“Yeah, and I bet you are afraid of being stuck on the ground, am I right?” The boy said as he turned and looked at the girl.

“No, I have been stuck on the ground a few times, not bad, but the open air is much better.” The girl said dreamily.

“Good for you... I am leaving. See ya.” The boy said waving a hand in the air before turning and going on his way.

“Goodbye, enjoy getting wet.” The girl said laughing before she flew quickly by him, making his hair get windswept.

“.... Now I know why dad says to keep away from angels...” The boy said as he used a hand to fix his hair before he continued walking, until he got soaked by a raincloud that the girl had put over him. He blinked and wiped his eyes to clear the water, before glaring upwards to see the girl laughing from atop the cloud. He shook his head before he thought for a moment. His hand lit up with a blue glow before he looked up and tugged out one of her secondary feathers and caught it as it fluttered down.

“Hey!” The girl said confused as she looked down at him. He smiled wryly and waved the feather in his hand at her.

“Need a quill?” He asked snickering.

“No I don’t. My parents seem to be wrong about some mages, you seem alright.” The girl said, flying down carefully to stand in front of him, “I’m Wind Song.”

“Mellow Flow. Nice to meet you.” Mellow said holding out his hand before he saw Wind hesitate. “Oh come on, I am not going to melt your hand or whatever you have been told.”

“You can never be sure.” Wind joked as she returned the gesture.

“Well, it’s been nice. But I have to go. See you around.” Mellow chuckled out as he turned and walked the rest of the way home.

“See ya. Maybe mom and dad were wrong...” Wind muttered as she flew up to her cloud home.

^V^V^

It had been around fours years since the little encounter Mellow and Wind had with each other. Today was going to be another meet up, but in the worst of ways.

“Come on, Son. We need to get these parts if we are going to get that damned contraption to work.” Mellow’s father said in his usual gruff tone. Mellow only nodded as he was bored out of his mind. He looked around the shopping district while his father bartered with the pony at the stand. The area was filled with unicorns, pegasi, mages, angels, earth ponies and normal humans. He sighed and shook his head at how the three species of humans mostly kept their distance from each other.

“Come on sweetie, lets get what we came for so we can leave.” A light female voice said as it got closer to Mellow and his father. Mellow looked towards the voice to see a female adult angel flying over with a teenaged angel beside her to the stand he and his father were currently in and felt a sudden feeling of dread as he knew what was going to happen next. Yelling, verbal abuse, and plenty of insults. The female angel cut in front of his father, who was almost done with his bartering, and started talking to the pony in the stall while the girl stayed a few feet behind her, looking unhappy with her head lowered and her hair over her face.

“Just what do you think you are doing featherbrain!?” Mellow’s father yelled as he groaned and facepalmed.

“Oh, I’m sorry I didnt notice you.” The woman said absently, not turning around. Mellow’s father growled for a brief moment before speaking up again.

“Then why don’t you go to the back of the line and wait like everyone else?” He said grinding his teeth slightly.

“Because I am already here and we don’t have time to wait for a mage to finish with his little magic act.” The woman said as she turned around. Mellow hissed slightly as he backed away from his now fuming father and accidently bumped into someone. He turned around to see the girl that was here with her mother, whom was aggravating his father, and he smiled sheepishly.

“Eh heh, sorry.” He said, nervous of another small fight.

“Its fine, my mom seems to like doing this with mages.” The girl said, looking up as she landed and parted her hair, she looked at him quizzically for a second before asking, “Do I know you?”

Mellow blinked for a moment, confused before his eyes widened with realization. “Wind Song?!” He whispered astonished.

“Sadly... Wait.” Wind said before she realized who she was talking to and smiled. “Hey, your that Mellow dude!”

“Easy!” Mellow said before looking back at the arguing parents. “I don’t think this is a good spot to catch up. Wanna go somewhere more... Calm?”

“I was going to do that anyway, I hate when she fights with others.” Wind said shrugging. Mellow nodded and gestured for her to follow as he walked away from the stand and to a less populated area of the market. They stopped and sat atop the wall that overlooked most of the district before Mellow sighed and leaned his head back.

“So how have you been?” He asked as he looked at Wind.

“I’ve been good, if you count ‘having your parents try and brainwash you into hating every other race and make me try to believe that god sent us here and we are the best race’, good.” Wind sighed.

“Nice... I guess you could say the same, ‘cept scratch the ‘Sent by god’ part. Plus all those rouge bands of normals roaming the streets doesn’t help at night.” Mellow said as he pinched the bridge of his nose. “What have you been up to... Other than the brainwashing that is..”

“Looking for a way to leave my racist parents.” Wind said.

“Heh, join the club. If only I was like those other advanced kids, I could just snap my fingers-” He said snapping his fingers to try and emphasise his point, but instead accidentally had a apple land in his hand. “... Yeah that. Want an apple?”

“Not exactly advanced, but at least you got something going for you,” Wind said laughing, “and yes, I would like an apple, I'm kinda hungry.”

“Oh yeah, I got something going for me alright.” Mellow joked as he handed her the apple. “Watch the great magician create apples! Almost the same save for the tangy aftertaste!”

“You’re just the same as before, still funny.” Wind said laughing as she bit into the apple.

“Thanks, but really, that is going to taste like a orange after you finish it.” Mellow chuckled.

“I like oranges.” Wind said as she chewed. Mellow just laughed as he looked over the city and shook his head.

“How come we get along just fine and the grown ups act like kids?” Mellow sighed as he rested his elbows on his knees.

“I think its because their parents brainwashed them into thinking they were better than the others and we met each other before the same thing could happen to us.” Wind suggested.

“Yeah and the ponies settled their differences what, a millenia ago?” Mellow said throwing his hands in the air in exasperation.

“I borrowed a book from a library, I learned that we were around during that time, and while the ponies settled their differences, we never did and continued being who we are now.” Wind said, not at all sorry about taking a book.

“Yeah, the only difference between now and then is we aren’t killing each other.” Mellow groaned. “And that is barely holding together.”

“Yep...” Wind said as she finished the apple and put the apple core on the floor. They talked a little bit longer and made jokes here and there before Mellow heard his father calling for him.

“Crap... Welp, see you later Wind. Let’s try to meet up again.” Mellow said as he hopped off the wall.

“Yep see ya, and Mellow?” Wind said.

“Yeah?” He replied looking back up at her.

“The apple didn't taste like an orange, it still tasted like an apple.” Wind said smiling as she flew to her mother.

“Huh.... Guess that book really did help.” Mellow said as he walked back to the sound of his father’s shouting. From then on the Angel and the Mage both continued to see each other, without their parents knowing of course lest they incur their wrath, where they first met each other on the cobblestone road.

Two years had passed since the incident with Mellow’s Father and Wind’s mother. Mellow walked away from his school, an old and used backpack on his back. He was wearing a grey zip up hoodie with a Yellow T shirt underneath and blue jeans. He smiled as he saw not a single cloud in the sky. He stopped as he found himself on the old road he used long ago before shaking his head and chuckling.

“That cloud trick isn’t going to work twice, Windy!” Mellow said looking up to see a grey cloud.

“It was worth a shot.” She said as she flew down to the road. She was wearing sky blue shorts and a bright red shirt.

“Maybe on a day it wasn’t a clear sky, then yeah.” Mellow said chuckling before he began to walk towards a dirt road that branched off from the main road next to Wind’s home. “Shall we?”

“Sure, beats going back home to more ‘Schooling’.” Wind said shrugging.

“I’d imagine so.” Mellow laughed before he began to run down the road. “Race ya!”

“Your on!” Wind said as she opened her wings and flew by him, laughing as the wind messed with Mellows hair.

“Hey! Wings are cheating!” Mellow laughed as he ran.

“You never said that as a rule!” Wind shouted, circling back and landing, before running quickly after Mellow.

“Yeah, well, now it is!” Mellow laughed again before he continued sprinting. The duo continued running until they arrived at a small rundown abandoned shack and leaned against it. “I still don’t understand, why we can’t just eat at a cafe or something.” He said panting slightly.

“Because some cafe’s don't like angels, and some cafe’s don't like mages, we can't go to the same cafe.” Wind said sadly.

“Oh right...” Mellow said as he shook his head and opened the door to the shack before walking in and leaning against the walls as he let out a relieved sigh as the shade cooled them down.

“So, have you found a place yet?” Wind asked. Mellow slid down the wall and sat on the floor before running his hands through his hair.

“Somewhat yes. But we are going to need to get some jobs if we are going to pay the rent.” Mellow said smiling.

“The rent won't really be a problem for me.” Wind said.

“Well good for you, but I still need a job. I am no freeloader.” Mellow said as he leaned his head back. “Sad thing is, not too many places to get decent, well paying jobs.”

“You think I’m a freeloader?” Wind asked, hurt, as she looked at Mellow.

“No no, I just meant I don’t want to mooch off you!” Mellow said quickly.

“Ok.” Wind said as she walked around the room.

“Oh and one more thing, we are gonna have to share the house.” Mellow said as he stood up and looked out the window.

“That’s fine with me, who are we sharing it with? A pegasus, unicorn, earth pony?” Wind asked.

“Unicorn. This purple and weird one too. All consumed in her books... And don’t you dare say I am the same!” Mellow joked as he pointed a finger at Wind.

“Awwww...” Wind said pouting.

“... Fine, make your joke.” Mellow sighed as he facepalmed.

“The moment is gone now.” Wind said laughing.

“Great, now I will never know my humiliation! OH THE TRAGEDY!” Mellow said dramatically throwing an arm over his eyes.

“You’re the same except with a sense of humor.” Wind said smiling.

“Oh son of a...” Mellow said before facepalming again. “Happy?”

“You walked into that one.” Wind said.

“Yeah, that is true.” Mellow laughed as he looked out the window to see the castle. “Ever wonder why Celestia doesn’t just step in and ask why the hell we are all so angry at each other?”

“No I don't, but I guess it might be because all the ponies have already tried, and its no use for her to try. She might be a princess, but the adults strongly believe what they were told is right.” Wind said.

“Pfft, like they are going to stand against the word of a being that moves the sun...” Mellow said rolling his eyes.

“My mom has openly said that she doesn’t move the sun, that she fakes it so she will be a princess.” Wind admitted.

“Yeah and I am a flying blue dragon with pigeon wings.” Mellow said chuckling.

“That wouldn't work well unless you’re super skinny, otherwise you wouldn't be able to fly.” Wind said.

“Would be funny to see though.” Mellow snickered.

“Yes it would.” Wind agreed, smiling. Mellow just sighed and rolled his neck before stiffening up as he heard several cracks emanate and then relaxed again.

“Well, I guess easiest thing to do now, is search for help wanted posters.” Mellow sighed out as he looked outside again.

“I think the first thing we need to do is find a way to leave and get to the house.” Wind said.

“Well that’s easy. Here, I will show you.” Mellow said smiling as he walked out the door with Wind behind and looked around before walking back towards the cobblestone road.

“Whatever you say.” Wind said with a mischievous smirk as she followed him. They continued on their walk until they found the road again and Mellow stopped before furrowing his brow.

“Oh damn it...” He muttered as he looked at the roads. “I totally forgot where to go from here...”
“Hmmm, are you afraid of heights?” Wind asked, never losing her mischievous look.

“Not necessarily... Okay a little bit.” Mellow said sheepishly.

“Well my parents were right about mages being afraid of heights.” Wind said as she slowly opened her wings as she walked behind Mellow.

“Why am I getting a sense of on coming terror.” Mellow said.

“Because you have good instincts.” Wind said as she grabbed hold of Mellow’s arms and flew into the air, flapping her wings hard to compensate for the extra weight.

“Holy shit!” Mellow screeched as he clung to Wind’s arms. “What the hell Windy?!”

“You didn’t remember, so it was time for a birds eye view!” Wind said happily as she flew over the paths. Mellow just trembled slightly as he looked down. “Fortunately, I count as a bird.”

“Lovely! Now, ground again please!” Mellow said as he was debating whether to clutch his eyes tightly to avoid puking with fear or simply get this over with as soon as possible.

“Do you remember the way?” Wind asked as she stopped and hovered.

“Kinda hard to remember when I am fearing for my life!” Mellow said looking up at her.

“You do know that you're ten feet off the ground, that isn't very high.” Wind said frowning.

“Ten feet is too many!” Mellow whined.

“Alright, I’ll put you down.” Wind sighed as she flew to the ground and set Mellow down as she landed. He shakily stood for a moment before he sighed and shivered once more to get the feeling of goosebumps out of his system.

“Pleeeease, don’t ever do that again.” Mellow said looking at Wind.

“Seems like more of a phobia then a fear right now.” Wind said.

“I was referring to the surprise lift off...” Mellow said shaking his head. “I don’t care about flying, you just scared the hell outta me.”

“Alright, I won’t surprise fly you again.” Wind promised.

“Thank you... Now if you really want to help me remember, could you fly up and tell me where Haybale lane is?” Mellow asked as he reached into his backpack and pulled out a small book.

“Sure.” Wind said, before she reopened her wings and took off, looking at the roads and the signposts before returning to Mellow, “Its the middle path.” She said, pointing.

“Thanks, now let’s go!” Mellow said as he gestured for her to follow and he began to walk. The duo walked around the city, getting a few stares here and there from the other humans, before they arrived at a large home. “This is it. Onyx Street, Two-Five-Eight-Zero.”

“Nice house.” Wind said.

“Indeed. Still surprising she is renting out rooms. You’d think she wouldn’t need the extra income.” Mellow said as he walked up to the door with Wind.

“Well... you said she is super into studying, maybe she needs the money for a lot more books?” Wind suggested as she knocked on the door.

“Probably. And that is what I call obsession.” Mellow said as the door opened up to show a small purple unicorn standing in the doorway.

“Hello, Mellow, I am assuming this is your friend Wind Song?” The unicorn asked smiling.

“Yup. She was curious about where we are going to be staying, so I thought I’d show her. Wind, this is Twilight Sparkle.” Mellow said gesturing to the Unicorn.

“Hello.” Wind said waving at the pony.

“Its nice to see at least a few humans are friends with each other, regardless of their race.” Twilight said.

“Tell me about...” Mellow muttered. “Anyway, may we come in?”

“Of course.” Twilight said, moving away from the door to let them in. Mellow gave a nod of thanks before walking in and looking around, smiling happily.

“Nice to be out of the hot sun and into the cool air of a home huh?” Mellow said to no one in particular.

“Yes.” Wind said as she walked in.

“So where is Spike, Ms. Sparkle?” Mellow said as he looked at Twilight. “Don’t tell me he is out on his own for once.”

“No, he isn't, he is upstairs putting some of my new books into the library.” Twilight said, “and you can just call me Twilight.”

“Alright. Well may I show Wind up to the spare rooms?” Mellow asked smiling.

“You may.” Twilight said. Mellow nodded again before heading towards the steps and waving for Wind to follow. Wind opened her wings and flew after Mellow. He stepped up onto the second floor and walked over down a hallway before three doors where on the walls. Two on the left and one on the right.

“Okay, so these two are the rooms we are getting, and that one on the right is Twilight’s.” Mellow said as he walked over next to a door. “And you can pick which one you want I guess since they are both the same practically.”

“Ok, I guess I'll have this one.” Wind said, going to the door furthest to the left. Mellow just shrugged before following.

“Okay, they both have a bed, dresser, and a closet. And a desk if you need it.” Mellow said.

“That’s already better than my room at home.” Wind said. Mellow only shrugged again before walking back towards the staircase.

“Now you can move in anytime you’d like, but I am going out job hunting.” Mellow said chuckling.

“Have fun.” Wind said waving as she opened the door to the room.

“Oh I am going to have a riot of a time! A riot I tell you!” Mellow shouted back in mock seriousness.

“Good luck with that.” Wind said, poking her head outside the bedroom door to look at Mellow.

“Yeah yeah, I will be at the help wanted poster board if you need me.” Mellow said as he walked down the stairs and walked out the door. With that Wind and Twilight went on with their days knowing that things were going to get better for them. Hopefully.
