Rainbow Dash couldn't figure out why the hay she was at the gala again. The last time she had gone it had all ended in disaster. She looked around the room, at each of her friends, all wearing dresses made by Rarity. They all looked great through Rainbow Dash's eyes, speaking as a friend of course. Rainbow Dash herself was wearing a white silky, and hung around her body like drapes. There was almost no volume to the dress at all. The dress was lined with a white lace resembling clouds. Rarity had been so proud of her work, for a simple dress it had turned out so elegant.
She watched couples come together once again as a slow song came on. She sighed and turned away from the dance floor, some fresh air would do her some good. She wove in between stray couples as she made her way for the door, but she never quite made it.
"Long time no see, Pie saver," came from behind her. Rainbow spun around and saw Soarin standing behind her. Rainbow Dash started to blush; glad the light was dimmed for this song.
"Yeah," Rainbow said feeling stupid.
"May I have this dance?" Soarin asked bowing his head slightly. A furious blush appeared on Rainbow's face. She was pretty sure Soarin could see her blushing because he gave an encouraging smile.
"Of c-course," Rainbow said shakily.
Shaking, Rainbow joined hooves with the Wonderbolt and they began to dance. Soarin chuckled slightly, "The brave and mighty Rainbow Dash…. Who knew a dance could faze her like this?" Rainbow blushed, allowing herself to be guided slowly back to the dance floor. She noticed her friends sneaking peaks at this unlikely couple. Other ponies were watching as well.
"Even the bravest pony…Oh, I'm just going to shut up now so I don't make a fool of myself," Rainbow Dash said not daring meet Soarin's eyes. She could feel his gaze on her, as well as the gaze of many other ponies.
"Let’s not go making this dance awkward, OK? I've kind of been looking forward to it since last year, since I never got the chance." Soarin said in her ear.
Rainbow smiled, and looked up, finally meeting his gaze. "A year, long time to wait for a dance, don't you think?"
"Maybe, but any pony that saves a pie deserves one, right?" He asked in response.
Smiling Rainbow gave a slight shrug and laid her chin on the Wonderbolts shoulder, and felt a chin on her shoulder in return. He smelt good, like clouds, and rain.
She closed her eyes and they continued to dance long after the song was over. Their dances became complex as faster songs came on, and slow and simple as each slow song came on. Rainbow saw many Mares give her jealous glares as the two of them danced. She didn't care. All that matted was her and Soarin. Her nerves and gone long ago. She felt like she was dancing with an old friend.
As the last song played Soarin leaded in and gave Rainbow a long sweet kiss. Rainbow blushed happily as they broke apart.
"It's been a pleasure, Rainbow Dash. How about lunch at… um… what restaurants are down in Ponyville anyways?" Soarin smiled sheepishly.
"You can meet me at Sugarcube corner. I'm almost always free." Rainbow smiled.
"Lets see… today's Saturday, so how about Monday? 1 o'clock?"
"It's a date."
Soarin gave her one last kiss and separated. Monday could not come soon enough for either of the two ponies.
Rainbow was greeted by squeals of joy from her friends, and Soarin, a smirk from Spitfire.
