Let the Music Guide You
Fluttershy awoke in the early morning, opening her teal eyes to a bright and sunny day. She yawned, making a girlish squeak that made her giggle with embarrassment. Her long, thick pink hair fell into her eyes and she pulled it away. She hopped out of bed, her yellow pajamas warm and soft against her pale skin. She toddled over to her vanity, plucking a hairbrush from the table-top, and began to gingerly brush her pale pink locks.
Fluttershy fingered a pesky lock that continued to fall into her face dramatically. She cautiously took a pair of sharp scissors out of a nearby drawer and held the hair tightly. With one dramatic snip she freed herself of the tiny hair. Looking at the mirror again, however, she noticed that she had cut off a bit more than she had thought, giving herself uneven bangs. That didn't really matter though, and Fluttershy simply shrugged it off. She pinned her hair back with a flower barrette.
Fluttershy put on a yellow sweater, a pink skirt, and white knee-high stockings. Lastly she put on her black mary-jane shoes and grabbed a backpack filled with school supplies. It was her very first day of high school! She couldn't believe it was finally here.
Fluttershy ran to her bus stop, hair her flying out behind her as she ran. She quickly caught sight of her best friend, Rarity, who was dressed in a cute white sun-dress. The two girls had been best friends for a long time, and they trusted each other like no other did. Rarity's purple hair was curled tightly, and on her face where bright orange glasses. Behind her glasses, dark blue eyes with thick lashes looked Fluttershy over.
"What happened to your bangs?" Rarity greeted as Fluttershy moved closer. Fluttershy put a finger up to them, feeling that the little flower barrette was falling out.
"I accidentally cut them a bit too much," Fluttershy admitted quietly.
"Well, no matter. I can fix them, darling," Rarity replied, putting her arms out and hugging her friend happily. Rarity was talented with anything related to fashion, and Fluttershy almost envied her friend. Rarity was good at styling hair, fixing clothes, and even drew her own fashion designs in her free time.
Suddenly Fluttershy saw a bright orange bus out of the corner of her eye.
"That's the bus!" she squeaked, and she and Rarity high-fived. They were eager to meet new friends.
Fluttershy stood, mouth gaping open, nervously staring at the high school. Ponyville High School: Home of the Equestrians. It was huge, and bustling with teenagers. Rarity and Fluttershy stood together contemplating how they were going to make a grand entrance.
"Are we going in now?" Rarity asked. She had already planned a grand entrance and was simply waiting for Fluttershy to go in.
"I...I think we should," Fluttershy whispered. She was terrified. What if everybody was totally mean?
"It wont be so bad, darling," Rarity assured her friend, adjusting her fabulous over-the-shoulder bag. Fluttershy nodded and they entered the school building.
The school was clean and practically sparkling. All around her teenagers were talking in large groups and club sign-ups had already begun. Club leaders and supporters stood all around behind booths taking questions and sign ups. Fluttershy looked into her backpack and pulled from it her schedule.
First period she had history, and Rarity wasn't with her. The thought intimidated her seriously. Next period she had chemistry, and she was with Rarity for that one. For third period she had English, for fourth gym class. That class without Rarity especially intimidated her, especially since Fluttershy wasn't especially athletic. Her last class of the day was art, and that one she was especially excited for. Fluttershy loved to draw. For her sixth class she was to pick a club.
"Let's check out the clubs!" Rarity cooed excitedly, dragging her friend over to look at all the stands. Fluttershy soon found herself looking at the listings of sports. The school had so many sports teams and a proud history as the Ponyville High Equestrians. The school mascot was locally famous.
Basketball, baseball, soccer, volleyball, football, hockey, lacrosse, track, gymnastics, rugby, dance, bowling, swimming, wrestling, fencing... there were so many options that Fluttershy's head hurt.
"There are lots of great team sports, darling, and you don't have to get dirty for all of them!" Rarity declared, picking up pamphlets for bowling, dance, and swimming.
"I hate sports." Fluttershy shook her head, not wishing to pick up any fliers. She wasn't athletic, and she didn't want to get teased for her poor dexterity.
"Hey there!" said a voice. Fluttershy turned and was face-to-face with a pale girl in purple-tinted shades. Her hair was blue with darker streaks of navy, and around her neck hung bright red headphones. She wore a white tee-shirt with the word "wub" on it, and acid wash jeans.
"Sorry to intrude," said the girl, "but did I just hear you say that you hate sports?"
"Oh, um..." Fluttershy gasped, wondering how many others overheard her saying such a thing. Was this girl about to chastise her? No, it appeared not, the girl was grinning happily. She handed Fluttershy a flier.
"Choir. It's for all us cool kids who'd rather memorize lyrics than plays. I'm Vinyl Scratch," she said, taking off her glasses. She had bright red eyes that Fluttershy find quite bold. This girl didn't seem intimidating at all, though, in fact she seemed quite friendly. Fluttershy looked at the flier for choir and smiled. Perhaps she would join.
"Thank you, Vinyl. I'm Fluttershy. I'll think about it," she said, tucking a bit of hair behind her ear.
"Definitely. I bet you're an awesome singer." Vinyl winked and Fluttershy, grinning happily.
"Vinyl! There you are!" said a girl with sleek black hair and lavender eyes, arriving dressed in a very nice suit and bow-tie. She put her arms around Vinyl and squeezed.
"Hey Tavi!" Vinyl Scratch replied, high-fiving her friend, "Meet Fluttershy, she might join choir with us! Flutters, can I call you Flutters? Flutters, this is Octavia."
"Hello," Octavia replied, nodding at Fluttershy and smiling, "choir is a lot of fun if you're up for it. What are you? A soprano? An alto?"
"Probably second soprano," Fluttershy nervously replied, not really sure what her voice was capable of. Rarity suddenly appeared next to her, carrying a ton of pamphlets and fliers.
"I'm back!" she declared, organizing the fliers carefully, then looked up, "who's this?"
"I'm Vinyl Scratch," Vinyl said, putting out a hand to shake. Rarity's hands were filled with fliers, so she immediately decided that no shaking would be necessary.
"And I'm Octavia," Octavia said, nodding at Rarity.
"Pleasure to meet the both of you, I'm Rarity," she announced, "and I'm just not sure what club I'd like to join!"
"Choir," Vinyl replied, simply.
Suddenly a loud bell rang and Fluttershy jumped straight in the air.
"Smell ya later!" Vinyl said, running in the opposite direction. Rarity turned to Fluttershy and smiled, adjusting her bright orange glasses.
"See Fluttershy? You're already making friends. See you at chemistry."
