//-------------------------------------------------------// Goodbye, Reality -by fishii10- //-------------------------------------------------------// //-------------------------------------------------------// %i% - Something's Not Right //-------------------------------------------------------// 1 - Something's Not Right I opened my eyes quickly. Stifled, childish excitement filled me. I'd seen all three seasons of My Little Pony, and guess who were turning up at the holiday park later? The Mane Six themselves!...uh, I mean humans in pony suits. Stupid, I know. I mean, perhaps not even the most hardcore of bronies would feel the excitement of seeing a life-size costume of their favourite character...but something strange drew me to it. I'm not a fanatical brony, I don't even own figures yet, but I could feel something big happening there. I guess you could say...it was what my cutie mark was telling me. Last night was unsurprisingly hot. Summer was on its way, as June had just begun. I'd taken my top off before falling asleep the night before. I lifted my duvet, which was a faint blue striped alongside creamy white, aside. It's go time. Last night's dream was weird...maybe symbolic, but definitely weird. Voices called out to me, begging for help, nearly inaudible. "Three," they shouted weakly. "Three!" Something was up in that dream. All I could do was hope that everything was OK in this world. GOODBYE, REALITY My bags were packed. I rested lazily on the sofa, Rainbow Dash-style, taking it all up. Besides me, there was nobody in the living room. 'Living' wasn't the term for it right now.  "C'mon, guys, I've been waiting what, fifteen minutes now?" I called into the hall. "It's not my fault," my younger sister Ella whined. If I was any good at voice-acting the Diamond Dogs, you know what I'd do. Stop your whining, spoke the sour voice of Rover in my head. I shrugged. Ella was very short, although she'd just turned eleven years old. She had had many operations, enough to drive you insane, but she still carried her innocence from when she was about five. Most of the time. She'd sometimes snap like a teenager – in fact, she was quite similar to Leah, worst case scenario. "I'm trying," grunted my older sister Leah from upstairs. 'Packing light' was not in her dictionary – she'd always end up packing a ruthless bag of bath soaps and stuff like that. Wait, drop that – her bathroom would be empty once we'd gone. She was usually nice, unless she was stressed. Stress turned her into the average portrayal of a moody teenager, and she'd whine at you like the first titular teen from Kevin & Perry. Another fifteen minutes or so later, I was called to the car. I slipped on my blue and white basketball shoes and dashed through the kitchen, hopping out of the side door and into the back seat of the car, iPod in my pocket. Finding 'KABOOM!' in the playlist, I slid into a sideways position and, leaning on the bags beside me, I drifted off to kill some car journey time. It was uncomfortable, no doubt...but why was I dreaming? Two alternate scenarios played out beside one another, but they were foggy beyond understanding. "Pick which side you're on, drop the bomb," sang I Fight Dragons repeatedly. The dream stopped for a moment, allowing most of the chorus to play out. But soon, my eyes filled with a swirling navy, reminding me of a certain princess... The Royal Canterlot voice bellowed out the lyrics... "Before they get to you...do what you've gotta do...KABOOM!" I spent the rest of the journey in a confusion not even music could rectify. If whatever that was was really talking to me...it means I've got something to do. I'm not up to anything...I can't save the world! Maybe I'll have to pray and let it pass...I've met with a terrible f– We pulled into the holiday park to the tune of the MLP theme song. Do I go red with embarrassment or happiness? I asked myself. Luna boomed, as she always did when I was a wuss, face your fears. I left the car, spotting Pinkie Pie not too far away, with some bags over my shoulder. Pack light!? Who listened... I walked over to our dormitory, swaying into Pinkie's path deliberately. "Uh...hey, Pinkie...I'm Simon." I smiled a little. For a fleeting moment, the suit disappeared, and the Pinkie I knew from watching 65 episodes on my iPad leapt into the air, staring down at me, gaping in shock, just as she had to Twilight Sparkle. Wait...what's going on... The Pinkie Pie suit vanished. I fled to the dormitory, hanging around outside the door, waiting for Mum to turn up with the key. Desperate to hide my confusion, I tried to act normal. Tough thing for me to do when thoughts are whirring around my head like bats in a crate. Keeping a straight face was tougher than staring a Cockatrice in the eyes. Soon, the door was unlocked, and I burst in, feigning the childish desire to bag the room with the double bed. It was never me; I'd be allowed it and that was a fact. After little discussion, I was. I darted around the room just like my thoughts were in my head. What's going on? Was I seeing things? Does Pinkie even exist? I let out a frustrated sigh as I dropped a thick pile of boxer shorts into the draw of my bedside table. Only time will tell... I slid my earphones into my ears, hitting the Shuffle icon on my iPod. The song 'Luna' began. Dream mode, thank goodness. The first time I listened to the Nightmare Mode version, I shuddered at what was uttered following the main song.... I felt someone or something tap my shoulder, and I hastily looked over it. Nothing. My other shoulder was tapped. Unless you're pulling reverse psychology on me, I'm gonna win this. I looked over the same shoulder again. Still nothing. Rrgh... "I AM THE CREATURE THAT FEEDS UPON DREAMS..." boomed that demon voice I just couldn't stand. "But I don't even own Nightmare Mode! What!?" Fear struck me through the heart like the spear of a certain Waddle Dee. I'd been playing Kirby for the last few days. Soon, the volume burst up, and the lyrics became deafening. "These sure are good headphones," my quavering voice guessed. I threw the headphones off in haste, almost as though it were a reflex, but somehow nothing changed. "Whoever you are - whatever you are - just PLEASE, quit playing games!" Games...three things burst into my strange mind at that moment. Damn, I've just lost The Game. Magolor, you flipping traitor. Worse than Marx. And, finally... "The game is over. And I win..." //-------------------------------------------------------// %i% - Such a Cutie //-------------------------------------------------------// 2 - Such a Cutie Blackness, blurs, then blazingly-bright daylight poured into my eyes. The room - wherever it was - was small, and the heat was nearly choking me. "Are you OK?" asked my mum. "W-what happened to me?" I murmured, lacking any energy at all. "You passed out in the park. You're lucky that this very nice kid saw you," she smiled, pointing towards a short child with tanned skin and a jet-black afro hairstyle. "Nice tattoo," grinned the child. He looked about 8 years old. "W-what ta - oh," I looked down to my hand. A game controller was on my skin. It looked a lot like a tattoo, but it was much smoother. I never really liked tattoos, temporary or not, but this one looked great. I looked down to it and managed to summon a weak smile. Starting to hear a voice in my head and feeling a pain in that same hand, I fell unconscious again... I woke up again in my room. "Uuuuh..." I groaned, finding my first true wake-up after being unconscious tough. Shaking my head slowly, my eyelids rose like weightlifters under dumbbells, very slowly. I shoved the covers aside weakly and rolled to the edge of the bed, hanging my legs out. My toes touched the comfy carpet, and I stood up, feeling a little revitalised. Great, you're on track now. What!? Are you...a second consciousness? Nope. Say hi to your cutie mark! My hand wiggled unconsciously. Uh...hey. Please don't do that again... As long as you do what I say, sure thing. OK, ...what do you want me to call you? It doesn't really matter. As long as it's not offensive. OK. I thought for what seemed like a long while, then finally spoke, Can't think of anything. Luigi? Hmm...I like it! How ' bout Mario, 'cause... My cutie mark took on a firmer tone. Let's get this straight, I'm in command here. No, you're not! I'm me. You're just a small part of me. No, I'm your destiny. I tell you where you're going. Point taken. OK. How about Starlow? That's a bit more of a guide-y thing, right? And you're inside me, so...yeah. Yes, she is. I'm male. I used to think Starlow was male. Does it really matter? It doesn't sound completely feminine.... Alright. My cutie mark sighed. Starlow it is..Anyway, I've got stuff to tell you. Yeah? Firstly, you're not tripping. Yes, this is all real. Secondly, the fate of the worlds now depend on you. I'll say no more on that, except cupcakes. Cupcakes, cupcakes, cupcaaaakes. Hold on, stop right there. Worlds? Nnnnope. Not saying any - WORLDS - Schtum. Not saying anything, OK? Hmmph, fine... And lastly, you're no longer existent according to anyone in this world. What!? You're not turning me into a godmodder, are you? And what about an emergency? Nope...public safety... Starlow stuttered. With what's coming up, I'm afraid we'd have to get thousands in for counselling. I mean, you wouldn't be the only one going insane after seeing real small pastel-coloured horses that belong to you... You're...serious? Pinkie was real? Yep, and believe me, that music you just heard was definitely symbolic of who you're up against. I leapt back in fright, tripping over the bed. Also, about calling 999...Nurse Redheart can pull out at any moment. You're top priority. No...way...You're serious, right? Yeah, you bet I am! Get ready, Simon. It's gonna be a long, hard road to insanity. It'll be tough to come to terms with, but believe me. Once you've secured the fate of Equestria, you'll be repaid in the best way possible. Your life will become amazing. You'll be a hero. All you've got to do is lend a hoof - er, hand. I left my room, shutting the door behind me gingerly. I called out for my mum, as I would usually when having faced something strange like that. Instinct always told me, whether or not confidentiality was an issue, to talk to someone about it, because it was usually interesting. I hated, and still hate, that childish instinct, but never more so than at this moment. I called out for everyone, tears stinging my eyes. Ponies were a part of my life, a phase everyone else hoped would pass. I was an outcast. But now, I'd lost my favourite thing. The thing I was the worst at, but the thing I enjoyed the most - to know that somebody else was alive, and that they knew me, and most importantly...that they loved me. Tears stung my eyes like tiny bees, the personification of my anger. Why did it have to be this way. Yes, I liked ponies. Yes, I'd dedicated just under 24 hours to watching a certain six grow through friendship, and I had learned - and been reminded of - a lot of things along the way. But I had never seen them as a life-binding thing. Trust me, Simon. You'll be OK. "R...r-really?" I sobbed. "B-but...I miss them so much! They might've been hard to cope hanging around with, and they could definitely say the same for me...but...they're humans!" Don't say that, please! This is your destiny! You can take them back if you want. You can leave the ponies and your past behind. But just know that you're leaving behind thousands. Over nine thousand, in fact. "W-wait...are you telling me that...every other brony knows I'm doing this?" You bet.. They're all counting on you. And maybe a few might join you on your quest, who knows? "So...I'm not alone?" You bet you aren't. You'll have magic to spare. Come with me. My iPod slipped out of my pocket and took its place in the air in front of me. It moved back slowly, and I followed it curiously. A small rush of happiness began inside me as I Fight Dragons' album began to play. As I picked up speed, I noticed for the first time that I was invisible to the human eye. Just found out, eh? Imagine the looks on their faces when a wooden door collapses before their eyes... I laughed. "Your sense of humour matches mine perfectly!" What did you expect? I'm your cutie mark, for Celestia's sake! It sighed. Keep up the pace, and I might treat you to Crazie$. Great song. We approached a weak wooden fence. 'D'you bring a paperclip? You're gonna need one soon. "Think I've got one in my pocket. We'll see." Hmm...what does Simonses have in his pocketses? My cutie mark chuckled at the reference, and so did I. I guessed swapping 7 billion people for a twin wasn't so bad after all. Go on, punch the fence. It looked rough and probably full of splinters. It wore a green stained patch like a giant bruise, except it wasn't really something to take pride in. It was smaller than me; it only reached my neck. I threw a low, powerful punch at it, and a plank budged. I wound up another, and the plank flew through the fence, taking some other chunks with it. "Good enough, I guess." I shoved my leg through the hole and ducked through it. It was uncomfortable, and the loose wood brushed my back, leaving a small and fairly painful scratch. Shake it off, my cutie mark sighed. "Oh, and about Celestia...no offence to her, but I prefer Luna." Great, 'cause she'll be the first pony you meet! "Really? Awesome!" My heart danced a little. This was like a dream come true: the world in my hands – erm, hooves... – , meeting that one society I was dying to drop those lousy humans for (as much as I loved a few), and...Luna! I could relate to her so easily. We were both so reserved, but when we felt free we were loving to everyone. Your thoughts are really telling me you're gonna love this. Hold your horses, because there's gonna be real danger up ahead. "Yes, I know," I said valiantly. "I honestly don't care. I'll do anything for any of them. I owe it to the ponies." Starlow and I headed on into the mists of happiness, uncertainty and danger. //-------------------------------------------------------// %i% - An Audience with the Princess //-------------------------------------------------------// 3 - An Audience with the Princess Soon enough, we arrived at a desolate garage, surrounded by overgrown, spiky plants and  scarred by graffiti. Starlow guided me up to the dirty white door. You're enjoying this kicking stuff, right? Well, guess what? I felt my leg slip back firmly, then swing forward with a power that I never knew I had. There's more. I grinned, satisfied, as the stuck door swung open. A bright blue light beckoned me in, covering the doorway in a blinding block. It's time. I sprinted in, thinking that the blue light was from the night princess's mane, expecting the floor to exist. It didn't. I fell, flailing through what looked like light navy space, surrounded by tiny twinkling stars. Stay composed. "OK." You're about to have an audience with the pr – Before Starlow could finish, I was once again blinded. Luna, Princess of the Night, towered over me, filling my entire view. I blinked twice, then began to take in every detail – her glimmering, pale blue horseshoes, her necklace encrusted with a symbol of a crescent moon, her deep navy face, her shining crown and her mane, glittering with stars. "Simon," she bellowed with the trademark Royal Canterlot voice. I fell back a little, and tried to swim up. "As you know, your destiny is confirmed. All of Equestria is counting on you." I was blinded once again, but this time the white light's origin was from my feet. "Do not be afraid!" I could see the beginnings of a smile creeping onto her face – she had faith in me. "You are changing, not on the inside, but on the outside. Never change inside! Is that clear?" My arms felt a little different, but I swung her a salute..."Hold on...what's happened to my fingers?" The light cleared. All that blocked my view now was a brown, spiked fringe. I raised my arms and looked down to them. In place of my hands and arms were two teal hooves. "Oh...my..." I tried to backflip in this gravity-lacking space, and caught a glimpse of my new rear hooves and a swish of my tail. Its colours reminded me of countless hours of Tetris on my Game Boy. "Allow me to explain," spoke Luna. "You remember the member of our species you designed yourself, named Game Changer?" "Yes." "The beginnings of your cutie mark were responsible for that." "Starlow, you've got great taste!" Thanks, I guess. "And now, you are Game Changer. Fulfil your destiny. Help us, and save us from this impending doom!" Following this brave speech, Luna retreated into her mane, looking down to her front left hoof shyly. Her horn glowed, lowering something grey down to me. I stared at it in awe. Its black controls looked like nothing I'd ever seen before...or something? I thought hard, reading the cyan label – POWER HOOF. Power...power? Now you're playing with power, Game Changer. Take the Power Hoof. You are the Game Colt, here to save all of Equestria! "Uh..." I scratched my new back unconfidently, then raised a hoof to my chest. "Yes!" I reached out, and the Power Hoof slid onto my left hoof. It was a tight fit, but I soon got into it. "Follow me," murmured Luna, still deep inside her mane. She turned to run in the same direction as me. I tried to scrape my hooves through the air, and, following Luna's direction, I soon picked up the movement. Now my mind was off galloping into an unknown future, I began to think. I want to help her. She's a lot like me...I just want to be able to talk to her! I haven't seen her since Luna Eclipsed, and I assume she's probably pretty established among ponies now. Of course she won't be outgoing...but that's where I come in! Perhaps I can shirk world-saving duties...occasionally...as much as I'd hate to...but...I felt myself grow warm inside, and I blushed. Maybe... Blossoming romance, I see? Don't get excited! Go on, kid. You can do it! I never said I – I can see past those thoughts of yours. You know you want to! I...uh...I sighed. Starlow had me cornered. Don't mess it up! OK, I'll back out, unless you're doing an absolutely dire job. Just leave it! Oh, fine! Starlow huffed. Just don't forget your duties! We continued into the blankness. //-------------------------------------------------------// %i% - Now You're Playing With Power //-------------------------------------------------------// 4 - Now You're Playing With Power On the other side of the blinding light, there was exactly what I expected – a room crowded with smiling faces, not of the human race I had left behind, but of only ponies. My eyes panned around the room, noting the presence of a joyous Twilight Sparkle, the ever-confident blue blur Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie looking ecstatic as usual, silent but beautiful Rarity, hovering Fluttershy and grinning Applejack. Many other ponies were in the crowd – fan favourites Lyra, Bon-Bon, Vinyl Scratch and Derpy. The Wonderbolts stood proud in all their glory, far outshone by the royal couple – Princess Cadance and Prince Shining Armor – and following that the great ruler of them all, Princess Celestia. The hat of the now Great and Apologetic Trixie sat, scrunched up, on the floor, but the mare herself wasn't in sight...I kept that in mind. Perhaps it was symbolic. Meh, never mind. I was ecstatic; this was a dream every child had, to see their animated idols alive, somehow, somewhere. My mind ran wild – how did they get here? Maybe the magic mirror in the much-debated Equestria Girls exists? Perhaps Hasbro and the writers are just a well-done coverup? Perhaps you're right, Game. Anyway, I guess you should stop thinking. Time for another royal audience. Wish me luck... I'm not good at speaking at all! It'll come naturally. Princess Celestia stepped forward, her once-shining horseshoes coated lightly in the dust of our Earth. "I've never liked it," I spoke shyly, feeling her read my thoughts. "I understand," she returned softly. "I sense discord among your people, in more ways than one." "Discord as in chaos, or discord as in the draconequus?" "Both, Game Changer. Thank you for your presence. As you may well know by now, it is your duty to use the magic of friendship, alongside the fillies and gentlecolts among us, to defeat Discord. You may meet some familiar faces along the way, and even some unfamiliar ones. Unfortunately, most of the familiar faces will be people, ponies or in a few cases other species that have caused harm to us in any way. You might have noticed that a certain blue mare's personality tore her from us, and back to Discord." Celestia spoke seriously, never wearing a smile since I had walked in. "Perhaps we can revive our alliance with her." "Just to confirm, that's Trixie, right?" "Yes. However, a more important question would be why exactly Discord has turned against us this time. I should've known better than to try and convert him..." Celestia sighed. "What happened?" "It's a very long story. He has slowly slipped past us, creating the occasional chaos in Ponyville in slowly increasing amounts. We have been too soft on him." Fluttershy shied away, hiding behind her curled magenta mane, hoping that the scorned princess wouldn't name her. "We have come to decide that it's time to take action, and that is where we'll need your help, Game Changer. Live up to your name, Game Colt, and help us revive both your world and ours!" "I will, Princess. You can count on me!" I took my place in the crowd to a great cheer.  I threw a hoof forward, shouting "Let's go, team," but I was briefly interrupted by Luna. "We are not sure as to the location of your enemies, Game Changer. Stay on your guard at all times and be prepared for an ambush at any moment. Other than that," I looked into her eyes, determined. "You are dismissed." "As I was saying," I threw my hoof forward once more, "let's move out, everyone!" We charged out of the dank garage in our dozens, with varying levels of confidence. I did my best to look confident. I guess you could compare me to Luigi. I can imagine someone kind, heroic and confident easily, but I'm a shell of that vision...unless I have the support I need. My act soon fell into place, and I led the charge of storming hooves on a journey to...anywhere. The Elements of Harmony at my side, I ran down the dirt path, through the deserted camp. Twilight Sparkle gave me a nudge, smiling. "Hello, Game Changer. I'm Twilight Sparkle." "Hey, Twilight. I'd shake your hoof if we weren't running. Sorry I haven't got time for an intro, but could you tell me anything about what happened with Trixie?" "She was on our side, but I reckon someone might've scorned her. Oh, I remember now...She didn't like the role she was given, since only myself and the girls can defeat many of the enemies we might come across. Trixie was an aggressor herself, and that's something we can't ignore. She dismissed herself. I think she went the way we're heading now. I'll do my best to sense her presence." "Thanks, Twilight." I looked to my left and right, noticing the other five 'mane' ponies smiling across at me. "Dash, Fluttershy, perhaps you can survey the skies? We don't want to have too many pegasi on that job; it'll draw attention to us." "It's on," grinned Rainbow Dash. Fluttershy looked reserved as usual, but with a little coaxing I managed to get her to follow. "Applejack, Pinkie," I called. They both replied with a confident "yes". "Could you two head on a little further and raise a signal if you catch anything suspicious?" Pinkie whipped out a disguise mask, nose, moustache and all (I had no idea where from – she didn't have saddle bags). "Oopsies," she grinned sheepishly, "wrong one!" She put it away, pulling out her Sherlock Pones hat and monocle. Applejack raised a hoof to her chest, nodded, and dashed ahead. Pinkie closely followed, jumping along at twice her height. "So, Rarity..." I thought a little about how she could help, but I had nothing. "Looks like we're out of lead jobs. You've got it easy," I winked, laughing. "I guess that now the delegation's done, I can introduce myself." Rarity played with her mane using her magic. "Or do you want to go first?" "Ooh, yes please!" She smiled sweetly. "But I guess you know me fairly well already...I sincerely apologise for the whining I put you through before..." She scratched her neck. "Uhm, remind me when that wa – oh, right. The Diamond Dogs –" "Speak of the devils..." Rarity shuddered, feeling foul breath touch her neck softly. I looked up, and saw brutish Fido towering over her. //-------------------------------------------------------// %i% - A Ruff Bunch of Crooks //-------------------------------------------------------// 5 - A Ruff Bunch of Crooks "Ooh..." Fido growled, giving the white mare's hair a stroke with his sharply-clawed dirty paws. "I found a pretty pony!...Have I seen you before?" "Leave me alone this instant, you ruffian!" Rarity cried. "That was an awesome pun," I grinned, "but on a more serious note," I thrust the Power Hoof forward, "she's right. And if you don't..." I drew the hoof across my neck and threw it away from me. "...that's what'll happen." Rover and Spot leapt from the bush, joining Fido. Rover shoved Fido aside, asserting his place as leader of the trio. As Fido picked himself up off the floor, Rarity stepped back, parallel to me. Our bodies brushed a little. "So, do you guys need an extra-large beating? I've got an order down for it," I smirked. "That was you, right?" The dogs scowled back, unsure of how to reply...until Rover stepped forward mightily. "We're your rival company, pony scum. We've got supersize helpings ready to dish out free of charge!" "Yeah, free of charge!" Spot sneered, copying Rover like a playground bully's crony. "Rarity, I'm guessing you want to step back. Feel free," I smiled kindly. "They don't call me the Element of Generosity for nothing," Rarity scowled at the dogs. "I've got something to give you. Want to guess what it is?" She swept back her navy mane and leapt at Rover with a vigorous fury I had seen very little of before. Rover got knocked back, dazed, by her strong hoof. A tiny whine escaped his attacker at the disgusting dirt that had accumulated on her hoof. "Don't worry, Rarity," she muttered to herself. "It'll be worth it in the end." She stepped back, waiting for me to make my move. Shocked and stunned at the defeat of their leader, Spot and Fido leapt at me, fists out. I stepped back and watched them crash into each other, readying my hooves. One...two...three... I threw each of my hooves into each dog's forehead. They hit the floor, sounding fairly dazed. I checked Rover's body for any signs of breathing, and it looked like he was knocked out. "That'll do. I can't kill, it isn't in my nature at all..." "But won't they still be a threat alive?" Rarity spoke quietly, knowing that what she said sounded fairly sinful. "Perhaps. We can deal with them though, right?" I gave her a confident smile, offering her a brohoof. She looked into my eyes, returning the brohoof... "Oh, um...Rarity?" I couldn't think of anything to say. She'd taken my hoof in hers. "I appreciate it, and I would if I could, but...I'm so sorry, I can't..." I sighed, looking down. I'd just slipped such a great opportunity...but she'd started so soon...My mind couldn't handle the pressure. "Thank you for saving me," she said. I couldn't detect any scorn in her voice. "I'm so sorry, Game Changer...I wasn't thinking, I haven't even known you that long, I'm just..." She also sighed, "...a bit caught in the moment, that's all." I rested a gentle hoof on her shoulder. "It's fine, don't feel hurt. Feel confident, Rarity. Perhaps your time will come later?" I gave her a wink. "Let's move on." //-------------------------------------------------------// %i% - I'm No Diamond //-------------------------------------------------------// 6 - I'm No Diamond The rest of the group had left us in the clearing. The two of us could hear what sounded like fearful conversations over the other side. The gang were worried about us. It didn't feel like we'd been in there long. The result was alright, but...I should've got rid of them! I could've...I would've...if only I was more confident... Back when things were normal, people would always tell me that I had a lot going for me, that I was great, that I'd be as famous as Bill Gates. I doubted them. I couldn't make myself believe anything they said. My grades weren't top-notch, my stories were (in my opinion) terrible, I stuck out from the crowd... Well, I knew the last one was a good thing. Difference is a great thing. Rarity at my side, I stepped out into the clearing, feeling a little worried. Questions were launched at me from every angle. "How did it go?" "What did they...do to you?" "Are t-they g-g-gone yet-t?" I took a fearful step back. "Everyone! I'll tell you on the way to wherever we're going next! Just...please, give me some time to...think!" I could tell that everyone could see the frustration on my face. They scurried back into formation. I took some deep breaths and picked up the pace. Rainbow Dash could smell it. Something was up with Game Changer. Just one fight couldn't make a colt's mind cloudier than lemonade. And how Rarity carried herself now...she'd seen it before...or at least something similar. She trotted almost as she had following the Grand Galloping Gala, and her discovery that Prince Blueblood was a self-centred, stupid stallion. The look on her face wasn't scorn, though. It leaned towards sadness, and maybe loss. Maybe... Well done. Oh, Starlow! Hi. We haven't spoken much lately... Anyway, it's about time you popped into my mind. I'm just so mixed up! It's OK, Game Changer. We all have those moments. You're not alone. Anyway, you dealt with the dogs well. I faked a smile inside. Uh...thanks? I know you... Starlow's tone became serious. If you don't learn to change soon, you're going to fail! You've got to learn to love yourself. You're exactly what anyone you trust says you are – Hang on, a scowl appeared physically on my face, causing the ponies either side of me to turn and look. I heard commands for the crowd to stop amidst my thoughts. It's not as simple as that, Starlow! I can't just flick a switch and change! You can, you've just got to find that switch. It takes time! Just leave me, and I'll fix it! OK... Starlow sounded a little defensive. I felt his presence leave my head, and in his place  I felt my stinging thoughts. "What's...wrong with you!?" Angered words slipped between my teeth, deserting my mouth and mind like breaths of fire. I just couldn't think of anything at all... Twilight Sparkle and her friends watched in pure shock as the cyan stallion deserted their presence for the dark woods beside them. Game Changer ran for all he was worth into the jet-black forest, stopping by a tree. All had been said that could be, so he just growled. He turned to buck the nearest tree, a new instinct that he'd gained since his transformation. Just as his powerful back hooves were about to launch, a voice appeared in his head. He sighed, expecting the cutie mark that had infuriated him just now, but instead the voice of Luna appeared. "Game Changer," she spoke with an unexpected softness, "I apologise for the situation. I commend your efforts against the Diamond Dogs. Believe what I say, and what everypony else says. I will be expecting better as your adventure continues. Return to your team, and do not worry about Rarity. She is a forgiving pony, and, perhaps, as you said before, she might have another chance. She will not be scorned. But, continue to be on your guard... I must leave you now. Do not let your flaws defeat you, young colt!" I picked myself up off the floor, feeling not invigorated, but neutral, clear of any emotion. Hopefully, that was soon to change for the better. //-------------------------------------------------------// %i% - Reclaiming the Rainbow //-------------------------------------------------------// 7 - Reclaiming the Rainbow When I returned to the team this time, not questions were asked. I got a sympathetic smile from Twilight, Applejack and Pinkie, but the other half of the Six were different – Rainbow looked frustrated, Rarity wore the same pitiful look she had before – I guessed that her mind wasn't clear following my rejection of her – and Fluttershy looked as though she was urging herself to go on, shivering in fear. I gave each of them a quick smile, but the effects were adverse. Rainbow Dash's scowl grew, but she didn't speak. She darted off into the sky above me. Rarity tried her best to smile back. I went to console her, but my instincts stopped me. You've done that in the past and it's not got you anywhere. Girls take you for granted. My lack of confidence also stepped in, pinning duct tape over my eager mouth. It pulled me back to my original position, where I showed Fluttershy a kind grin. A cowardly whine escaped her, and she turned away, joining Rainbow Dash up above for a second, then flying on ahead. Why does that glass wall of hatred exist? How do I break it? I'm no good at this stuff... Let me give you some clues. Listen up, Game. Are you sure Rarity doesn't like you? Why would she still be after you if that was the case? She'll be fine, just don't keep her waiting. And for Dash, consider this – if a pretty girl wandered into your ex-life, would you be jealous if she was taken? I knew the feeling too well. Seeing Laura dating Tom back in high school was a crippling blow to my confidence. Did I even stand a chance anyway? Nope, I just made a fool of myself. I take it from that flashback that that's a yes. Yeah... Poor you. Long way off Equestria, wasn't it? Yeah. Anyway, next clue... Don't you think how you acted before made you look... Aggressive? Out of contr – The message of 'Putting Your Hoof Down' played out in my head alongside a Spongebob episode of similar meaning. I've got it! This'll be a toughie to fix, but I might be able to pull it off... I hope so... Let's go, Starlow! I took a deep breath, relaxed my posture a little, and tried what I'd just done again, but this time in a different order. Maybe if I console Dash first, then that might show Fluttershy how nice I can be, but it won't risk offending Dash on Rarity's terms...perfect. I'd better move before everyone's thoughts throw them into unforgiving moods. I fluttered ahead, soon realising that it wasn't enough to catch Rainbow Dash. I kicked up the pace, soon about a tail's length away from here. "Rainbow Dash?" I called. She swung around, throwing me a scowl, but she soon noticed that my expression spoke kindness. "...Yeah?" Her scowl faded into a fairly neutral look. "I know how you feel...I'm so sorry. I had to turn Rarity down. I might look OK on the outside, at least in this state, anyway, but I just...I'm...not experienced. You're not missing out on anything. But...I guess we can talk a little more, right? Guess I don't always have to lead the crowd..." "Yeah, Twilight can do that! Well...if you say so...sure." She slowed down, flying next to me, and reached out a hoof, winking. "This isn't a trap," she grinned. "You two were hilarious!" I gave her a brohoof, but looked at her in shock. "How did you see us!?...pegas-eye view, huh?" I laughed a little. "Where's Fluttershy?" "She's probably digging out the magic mirror," Dash responded. We chuckled. "On a more serious note, though, I haven't seen her since she flew a little further on. She looked pretty frightened. Let's go and catch her, Game! Last one to Flutters is an egghead!" The sky-blue mare took off, kicking up dust with a rainbow trail. "Not fair!" I shouted to her. "I haven't had flying lessons yet!" I dropped to the ground, picking up pace with my new blue hooves. I didn't stand a chance...or did I? Guess I'd might need to do a little...rule-breaking. I bestowed all my thoughts to the Power Hoof, and it began to glow. I was blinded for a moment. I felt time stop – nothing and nopony, not even I myself, moved an inch. A strange, floating, near-transparent golden menu appeared before me. Use your thoughts to navigate, and choose what you need. You'll be needing this thing. Sure. EXP Gain, please! Prepare yourself... My wings were being filled with an overwhelming power, and soon enough they felt like two full stomachs either side of me. Ugh...what have you done, Starlow!? I feel...fat? Tired? Something bad, anyway. This'll be lifted if you get out of the menu. Get me outta here, then... Sure there's anything el – YES! Move it! I dropped to the floor, feeling like a new pony. Three transformations in a day? What... Anyways, let's move it! With one single flap of my brand-new wings, I jetted ahead. I reached for the air in front of me and boosted ahead even further. The full colour spectrum glimmered before me for a second, and I could barely hear the frustrated growl that followed its passing. I looked around, catching a glimpse of a buttery blob. There was some pink in it too. I slowed to a stop, then turned around, investigating. "Fluttershy?" //-------------------------------------------------------// %i% - Fluttershy, and Asking Why //-------------------------------------------------------// 8 - Fluttershy, and Asking Why The mare sobbed quietly, wiping her wide eyes with a feeble hoof. I approached her almost silently, trying to keep a calm air about me. I couldn't lose it with Fluttershy – I'd be shown as a monster to the rest of the crowd, and that was something I had to avoid at all costs. I rested a hoof as softly as I could on her left shoulder. She was curled up in the tall grass. "Fluttershy?" A tiny whine escaped the yellow pegasus. "It's OK," I whispered. "I'm so sorry...I..." She looked up shyly, a tear rolling down her face. "I just...couldn't think...If I scared you, then I'm so sorry..."  She wiped the tear aside, and a smile began to appear on her face. "I'm sorry too," she spoke, her low voice warming my mind like a hug. "I mean, if I..." "It's alright, Fluttershy. I know what you mean. I was worried about you. Anyway, we're OK now, right?" I gave her a friendly grin. Her curled, pink mane swept aside to reveal a forgiving smile. "Let's head back. I think I've got some introductions to make...still!" We fluttered back, meeting the crowd again. They came to a standstill. "Hey, everypony!" I gave everypony a welcoming nod. It was met with unsure smiles. "My name's Game Changer," I continued. "I've got a few questions, but I guess they can wait." No, they can't, spoke Celestia in my mind. Haven't I got to make friends first though?...Your Highness? Very well, but please hurry, the princess said. "Anyway, I'll come and say hi one by one. I'll have to make it quick, though, so sorry if it's a little brief." I stepped forward. Musical mistresses Vinyl Scratch and Octavia each gave me a firm, confident nod, backed by Baritone, Octavia's talented pianist. Surprise and Pinkie each took a hoof of mine and shook it. Lyra scowled, obviously knowing my origin. Rarity and Fluttershy turned to nudge her, and the mint mare straightened up. Mr and Mrs Cake smiled warmly. "Thinking about it, I'm kinda hungry," I murmured. The ever-present Derpy Hooves and her unicorn filly waved. Many more colourful faces rushed by, culminating in the white, navy and pink faces of royalty and dominance. The alicorns towered above me; even more so as I bowed to them one by one. "There's really no need," smiled Shining Armor as I knelt before him. "Maybe this is more suitable," he smiled, offering a hoof-bump, which I happily returned. I cantered back over to Princesses Celestia and Luna. "Game Changer, I know what you are about to ask," spoke Luna solemnly, "and the answer is a dangerous one." "We reached this world through a magic mirror in the castle," said Celestia. "It is not a world that anypony here knows of. This world is also a copy of your previous life, clear of any living things...unless, of course, they reached this world through that same mirror." Luna stepped forward. "Due to an accident in the castle, the antagonists of the stories you know well are terrorising this world, and who knows? Even your own world could be affected by this!" I shuddered to think what Discord, Chrysalis and  a whole host of other enemies I knew of could be doing on the other side. "I think it seems likely...Discord would've made himself clearly visible by now. He's the type to play games. Please, everyone, be safe..." "We must be quick, Game Changer. But we must also have hope. With the magic of friendship, we can defeat anyone," said Luna. "Sure thing. Let's keep going!" //-------------------------------------------------------// %i% - Grounded By The Griffon //-------------------------------------------------------// 9 - Grounded By The Griffon We left the shady forest for an open gravel path I recognised well – we'd hit the local reservoir. A memorial bench sat to my right. I headed over to it, noticing that there wasn't much room. Lyra and Bon-Bon had both taken a seat, with Lyra sitting in her human-like fashion and Bon-Bon lounging lazily. A slight gap was open between them, and there I could see the little brass memorial plaque. I could remember the name on it well – Donny Smith, 1965-2007, so I didn't bother to look. As I turned, it flashed in the sunlight. Wait...that didn't look natural... I quivered a little, approaching it. I read the contents of the hoof-sized sign once more. Harmony, 2010-2013. "Guys, can you shuffle aside a little?" I asked quietly. "Something's not right here..." "It's just a bench," sighed Bon-Bon. "No, seriously! It's...different." I leaned in for a second look, as Bon-Bon stepped primly off the bench. Lyra kept her seat. "Princess, come and look!" Not knowing which one I meant (which, I'll admit, was intentional), all three of the alicorns trotted over to look. "Everyone's name where I live has two parts, but we're all referred to by the first part." I continued my explanation, using my own name as an example. "This bench used to read 'Donny Smith', but now...I'm scared..." Celestia rested a comforting hoof on my shoulder. "Don't fear anything, hero. It's Discord. He's present, perhaps among us. Don't be afraid. You have the power to defeat him. Let's continue." Soon enough, the open path ended, and we were back on a shady dirt track. Little hills that looked ideal for BMXing regularly appeared. "This looks like a fun place to kick it up a notch." I picked up speed, and soon the ground flew past me in a way I'd never seen before. Applejack, Pinkie and Rainbow Dash joined me in a rapid race over the hills. Wow, my hind legs sure are capable, I smirked as I flew through the air. "No wings, Dash," laughed Applejack confidently as the two tied for first. The wind screwed up Pinkie's mane more than usual as she sung, happily bouncing along at her own pace. I used one hill to take off into the air, gliding with my long wings. Flight was something man had dreamed of, but it was something pegasi knew all too well. It was a gift to finally be one... Slam! The ground hit me like a thick wooden board. My knees felt full of pain; I assumed I'd tripped over a hill in flight. "Thanks, Discord," sneered a low female voice. It was mocking me, whatever it was. "You know, wherever that guy's concerned, your name is mud," she laughed. I touched my face lightly with my hoof; it returned brown. I felt disgusting. I raised my head, looking around – I'd just landed in a soggy, squelching pit of mud. I also noticed something else brown floating above me. I panned further up. Dirty yellow talons, pristine crystal feathers, kestrel-brown plumage, mocking eyes and a golden beak...Gilda, Rainbow's ex-flying-partner hung above me, arms crossed in a dominant posture. "Looks like you, punk, are about to be griffon some pain!" "You don't even know me..." I sighed. "Let's cut the intros and get to it," Gilda snarled. "Nah...I'm usually that type of guy, but today I don't feel like it," I spoke, trying to inject some defiance into my voice. "My name's Game Changer. It's the last one you'll hear." Gilda smirked at me, as if to say, "You've got guts – that I'm gonna rip out before we're done!" My anger increased. "I don't think that the party was good enough compensation for what you said and did to Pinkie. She's awesome," I said, "and what you're doing is off-the-scale negative. So, if you don't want to be served some pain – and nope, I'm not making you French bread – I suggest you leave." "You looked like you had potential, but now you sound like my dad," she sighed. "Idiot... You'll be twice as idiotic once I'm done with you. Oh wait," she continued in a singsong voice, "you won't be, because you'll be dead and gone!" //-------------------------------------------------------// %i% - The Mighty Wings Are Grounded //-------------------------------------------------------// 10 - The Mighty Wings Are Grounded I kept calm and controlled, not allowing her biting words to leave me open to more physical attacks. Gilda wore a twisted and enraged squinting look. She looked crazed; something didn't seem right. "Bring it," she snarled. Leaving a couple of feathers behind, she launched into me. I was stuck; the griffon was heavy, and I was too weak to fight back. I tried anyway. I pushed at her talons with my hooves, forcing all the strength I could muster into turning the tables. The sticky mud below me dragged me down, trying not to let go of me. My wings were frantically flapping in the hope that I could drag Gilda upwards. Gale-force winds from Gilda's dirt-brown wings battered my face. "Rrgh, stop,"I growled almost inaudibly as we struggled in the mud pit. And then it hit me. A great idea popped into my head (at the right moment, for once), and I was hasty to execute it. I shifted my right hoof out of Gilda's stabbing claws, causing her to lose her balance. As she tumbled into the pit, I flapped my wings and threw her a crushing punch, right below her right eye. Using the momentum I'd just gained, I flew a little way out as she fought against the dirt's iron grip. "Well played, punk," she spoke through a clamped beak, attempting to raise a clenched talon. Readying my hoof, I leaned forward, still hovering. Knockout blow time, I grinned. Ensuring I was streamlined, I dived down to meet her with a killer blow. She writhed in the dirt, inching closer and closer to releasing herself. I smirked, perhaps overconfidently – but my victory was short-lived. I was thrown into a dizzying barrel roll by Gilda, as she'd just slapped my ready hoof aside.  The ground hit me like a stampede of bulls, and the mud slapped me like a sticky custard pie to the face. I slid a little way through the dirt, soon stopped by the viscosity of the thick sea of brown. "Damn you," I spoke. "It's on now." I couldn't move an inch, at least not now. That was soon to change. I felt something (or someone) pick me up out of the dirt. I couldn't speak for fear of the unknown. Looking up at my back hooves as I hung, I saw that a certain light-blue pegasus had helped me out. "Didn't you listen to anything I said?" she shouted, furious at Gilda. "You could've helped us! But it's your loss now. If you still don't like us for who we are, you're missing out! Gilda..." The familiar, raspy voice of Rainbow Dash filled my ears with relief. "Have I got to swing this colt at you, or are you going to leave us?" "I know you too well," Gilda spoke confidently. I could see a devilish glow on her face. "You might wanna think before trying that, 'cause you'll be nothing more than paint once we're done! And believe me," she snarled, "you're gonna get mixed into the ugliest colours!" "Guess that's a yes, then," grinned Rainbow Dash. "Bring it, sister!" Regaining sight of the fact that I was the projectile, I pulled a worried look as I was swung backwards. C'mon, Power Hoof...anything... I slammed any button. I don't remember which, and I still don't care too much... Everything blacked out. //-------------------------------------------------------// %i% - The Best Possible Thing //-------------------------------------------------------// 11 - The Best Possible Thing Seconds later, things changed...for the worse. I couldn't move an inch. I felt like a solid rock... ...and his guess was correct. The Power Hoof had turned the plucky pegasus to rock. The rest of the pony party peered over the hill, and Rarity stifled a tear. Hearing the priceless line that followed, the crowd clapped their hooves together. Many a "Bravo!" could be heard as Rarity sobbed, "He may be a rock now, but he'll always be...my diamond..." Her melodramatic tears continued until a few came to console her, although the talk of show business was still rife in the crowd. Don't be scared, spoke Starlow, his voice now clearer than ever. You win. "Really? Do you call being trapped inside a rock for the rest of your life winning?" My thoughts were beginning to sound like Twilight Sparkle out there, going crazy. "How do I get out?" Eeeh...that's a toughie. Try and break out with force. I took a deep breath in, preparing a sigh. "But I ca —" Light flooded into my eyes. I heard murmurs of "Nice hat, Game!", "Well done!", and above it all the squealing laughter of Rarity. Before answering the crowd, I took a few seconds to regain a little sanity. I was standing on top of a pretty flat-looking Gilda, whose heart had stopped. My whole body was brown, not with the dirt but with...what? I lifted the cap off my head. It was a round, metal hat with a fancy scarlet ponytail stemming from the top. Not my cup of tea, but...wait. I have a Copy Ability? How? This Copy Ability, as wielded by the pink Star Warrior Kirby, allowed the user to turn to stone at will. I threw away the cap, and it landed neatly on the head of a Cockatrice. Not a threat any more, now, are you? But before I could focus on anything else, I was thrown to the floor by Rarity, who had caught me in a tight hug. "Oh, Game Changer! I'm so glad you're alright..."  She sounded dreamlike. I gave a near-silent sigh. Yeah, she's nice, but...isn't she just a tiny bit overkill? Anyhow, I returned the hug kindly, noticing that my coat was once again teal. "S-sorry I worried you," I spoke, stuttering. "I-I'll try not to do it again..." I felt unconfident even though the crowd seemed to have left us in peace now. When posed with a situation like that, I did and still do find it tough to say the right things. I soon realised that she was concerned for me, even if she was a little attached, so I returned the hug a little less reluctantly. I felt something moist touch my neck slightly, and soon it dawned on me. I had just been kissed. My head spun into frantic foresight. What do I say? What's gonna happen if I say it? Damn...I just can't think! You sure do choose your moments, Rare... I decided to let the kiss slip. I couldn't think about returning it. I wasn't even sure yet. Her name slipped from my mouth, without me even thinking about it. "Rarity?" Slightly shocked at myself, I decided to follow on with what I'd started and look at her. "Yes?..." "I'm so sorry... I just can't think... I need to be alone..." I tried my best to hide my frustration, but it was still pretty evident. "You just can't think? Oh, sweetie..." A scarily determined grin spread its way across her face, like peanut butter on lightly-toasted toast. I wasn't sure whether or not to enjoy it... "Let me clear your head for you..." Her eyes closed. Mine did too, but not in preparation for what was on its way. I had to think. I just couldn't decide... Do I jump at the chance? Surely I can't say no...? But...what about Dash? Won't she be mad? And can I ever trust a girl? I mean, past experience points against it...but these are ponies...and what if I leave this world, these ponies, this whole new paradise society, behind? Eh, screw it. I'd just made what could've turned out one of the most stupidly spontaneous decisions in my life. But it was about to feel good. I let my eyelids fall for real, and embraced the feeling of Rarity's lips upon mine. What have you done? cried a part of me, but the other just smiled. Perhaps the other part of me was my inner human, sceptical of society, wanting to be alone, just focused on success. Maybe I did have time for an optional sidequest. Just possibly, I'd chosen well. And Starlow's words confirmed that. Go for it, Game Changer. The power of love will see you through a few battles, when you'll need it the most. Trust my words, and trust your comics. What, really? I'm gonna go Scott Pilgrim in the future? Maybe. Let's hope so. Enjoy your time. I let the next minute or so pass, enjoying the feel of Rarity's pristine feathers against mine, her soft hooves on my cheeks, and her mane falling down my back like warm water. I pulled away, to her dismay, for a brief second. "I heard you," I spoke under my slow breath. "It was beautiful." We kissed again for mere seconds, ending in a tight, warm embrace. "Thank you, Rarity." "No, thank you," she said. "You may be a hero to everyone else, but you're more than that, to me...you're my Game Changer." Taking a quick moment to scan the skies and the trees, I left the clearing. My mind, and the surroundings, were free of any doubt. //-------------------------------------------------------// %i% - Dashed Hopes //-------------------------------------------------------// 12 - Dashed Hopes We emerged from privacy for the second time on this great adventure, no longer two different ponies but one great team. The atmosphere this time was certainly different. The crowd were gossiping wildly. If they'd seen us, they sure had done a great job on stealth. Some were excited, some were jealous, and some didn't speak (I assume that was for fear of scorning us). Even the princesses looked across at us happily. I looked around in search of the two pegasi I was worrying about the most – Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash. "Rarity, mind if I leave you for a sec? I don't care about what anyone will think about us, I just hope nobody's feeling hurt, that's all." "Yes, darling. That's fine," she smiled. I fluttered up, remembering all those times in the episodes I used to watch where Fluttershy would go on hoof. I couldn't stand that logic. It was a mere few seconds before I caught the pastel blue and yellow duo. "'Scuse me, guys," I alerted the clique below me. "Dashie, Fluttershy, are you OK?" "I'm so happy for you!" Fluttershy smiled enthusiastically. "I forgive you for earlier, I can see you're not like that. You chose well!" Rainbow Dash added nothing. As Fluttershy moved away, Rainbow Dash dragged me aside forcefully. "You said I wasn't missing anything!" she whispered, in a snakelike voice full of envy. "I haven't got time to argue," I said, "I've made my decision. If it affects you, then I'm sorry, but I can't change it for the sake of one pony." "So you dropped my infinite loyalty, just so Rarity can give you stuff!?" Dash's voice raised just beyond the loudest whisper. I could feel the venom flowing through her. "Who saved your neck? Who saved HER neck, by doing the impossible!?" "Firstly, she isn't just physically generous. She's given you her friendship, her love. You don't want to lose that, do you? Secondly, that was a team tactic, and finally, you've done the Rainboom at least three times over. Barely impossible, huh? Just please, leave us alone – together..." "Hmph," shrugged the blue mare, turning her back and soaring into the distance. I sighed. There's always one. Anyway, never mind. I have my diamond now. //-------------------------------------------------------// %i% - What's Big, Blue And A Threat To Everypony? //-------------------------------------------------------// 13 - What's Big, Blue And A Threat To Everypony? Those two words couldn't have been less true. I had broken a friendship. I had possibly disabled the Elements of Harmony. I had scorned the pegasus I'd been taking notes on all along. I needed that coolness, and Dash was my inspiration, but now I'd gone and thrown it all away... That thought brought a great song into my head, but it sure wasn't enough to fix the mess I was now in. And things were only going to get worse. The forest was cool and dark. Shadows hung over the team and I, like the party decorations of a depressed ghost town. It was dry and hard underhoof, making the journey very uncomfortable. My thoughts were a tangled mess. Comparing them to earphones would make them seem too easy to figure out. I decided to focus on my duty as leader of the team, and headed over to Applejack. "Hey, AJ! How's everypony doing?" "Sure is a tough journey," she huffed, exhausted. "We've come a long way." Her near-infinite resilience gained from years at Sweet Apple Acres was running out. Apple Bloom was slung over her back like saddle bags, which seemed surprising, considering Sweetie Belle was trotting along happily. As for Scootaloo, she was nowhere to be seen. She's probably chickened out, but...wait a second. Yeah, I've probably made another enemy. Damn. "You're all doing great," I replied happily. "Keep it up, and don't lose sight of Equestria!" I winked, crossing over to Pinkie Pie. "Hi, Pinkie. You OK? Wait, that goes without saying..." The pink pony was bouncing along happily at head height, as usual. "Yeah! Guess what I've got?" Pinkie whipped out a trombone, followed by a massive pack with almost every instrument one could name. "Sweet, huh?" "Is that just in case we come across any –" I followed her eyes to my left. A gargantuan blue sphere towered over us, with beady green eyes and a perfectly innocent smile. But at five ponies high, I found the expression tough to believe. Its huge wings slashed the trees beside it, knocking them down in one flap. And, no surprises there, Fluttershy was hugging it. //-------------------------------------------------------// %i% - I've Liked You For A Thousand Years //-------------------------------------------------------// 14 - I've Liked You For A Thousand Years "Phew, at least we're armed..." I sighed. "Looks like it'll take more than a one-pony ensemble to make this thing scoot...Fluttershy!" I barked. "C'mon!" "But...Game Changer...it's so...cute!" Fluttershy nuzzled the massive creature, her mane covering one of her eyes. "Remember what happened last time?" "Hmm..." The butter-coloured mare nodded. "OK..." She reluctantly left the creature alone. "Why don't we just go round it?" Twilight Sparkle stepped in. "Well...I would, but what if what's going on in this world is also happening in its equivalent?" "Makes sense..." Twilight still looked a little confused. "Hold on..." She turned to the crowd, kindly requesting that they'd be a little more quiet, but something caught her eye. "Everyone, where's Princess Luna? What about Celestia?" Nobody knew. "Never mind, we'll just have to canter on without them. We need all the musical talent we can get! Vinyl, Tavi, Sweetie Belle..." I listed off everyone I could remember. "Guys, get ready. Weather Team, come with me. I'll go and grab some supplies." As everypony else assembled, the weather team and I left the forest for the town centre. My hometown isn't a modern place at all. It bugs me. The nearest gaming store is about ten miles away, and I never get to go. The only place to get a film is the library. The library... "Guys, let's split up. I'll go to the library and grab some records for Vinyl to spin. You guys go to mine and grab my guitars. There's also a music shop down the road. Take the lot. We'll meet at this roundabout. Ready?" The team saluted me, and off we went. I burst through the library doors, scooping some of my favourite albums off the shelf and holding them in my mouth tightly. But rather than leaving, I headed straight to the back. There on the shelf of a short wooden cabinet, among Death Note, Naruto and tons of Dragon Ball Z comics, were five volumes of Scott Pilgrim. I wonder if they've got graphic novels in Equestria? No matter, this'll rock their world! I love these... I placed a clumsy hoof over the top of them and dragged them off the shelf, catching them with my free hoof. Only five? What about the last? Damn!...hmm. I-dee-aa! I dropped the books onto the desk near me and took a seat at the computer. Oh yeah...I've got hooves now, not hands! This'll be a toughie to f – got it! As another great idea popped into my head, I dashed for the cleaning room behind the support desk. Hurdling it, I bucked down the locked door to the cleaning cupboards. Sure enough, I found a plunger. Just what I need! Bullseye! I held the plunger over my right hoof, just as Samus might hold her blaster arm. Perfect fit! I'd better move, else the pegasi might get suspicious. Booting the computer up in Safe Mode, I logged in as an admin. The password was beyond obvious, but it took me about a minute to type with the clumsy new finger replacement. I also had to keep balance on my back hooves, which was tough. Nudging the mouse over to Notepad, I prodded the left mouse button. The plunger shifted off balance. I didn't have much faith in my ability with it... ...but I soon picked it up. I still wasn't perfect, faltering regularly, but my productivity went up by a long shot. Leaving the computer on mid-sentence, I fluttered out to cover my back. "Guys," I called. "Thanks for your help. You can head back now. I'm struggling to find something, but I'll only be a few minutes. Well done!" I headed back in as the Weather Team left. Re-equipping the plunger, I typed: Rarity, If we part ways, let me leave you with this. I've given everypony else a great graphic novel to read. They didn't have the last one, so I'll tell you what happens. I quickly detailed the ending of the book. If it ever gets tough, if you ever go back to Equestria, just remember that I'm still out there. Keep this, remember us. If you don't go back home, I'll say this. I love you. I'm sorry I didn't leave you with a graphic novel, but hopefully I've started a great story you're going to love being the main character of! Game Changer, or Simon I held Ctrl with the top-right corner of my left hoof, then poked P with my plunger-wearing hoof. As the little note slipped out of the printer, I snatched it, struggling to hold everything at once. Why don't I have saddle bags like everyone else... Slowly ascending out of the library, I could see more and more of the road winding out into the next town. I flung the plunger away haphazardly and followed the road to the massive reservoir, catching a multicoloured speck above the forest. That'll be Dash. I'd better get down there. I rejoined the group, collapsing in a heap on the ground. "Are y'okay?" Applejack helped me up. "And what'n the hay are these?" "They're for you guys. Take one, any one. And can you get Rar –" "Your special somepony?" Applejack teased, winking. "Sure thing, sugarcube!" "Not just her. Round up the rest of the gang too, please!" "Sure!" I nodded as she left my sight. My mind began to wander the mists of the day just gone. Luna's nightfall was approaching. //-------------------------------------------------------// %i% - Crystal Clear //-------------------------------------------------------// 15 - Crystal Clear We were approaching the south shore of the reservoir. The sky matched Applejack's vivid orange coat, with streaks of candy-floss pink lining the clouds. The falling sun cast light over the lake, and it sparkled brightly. The view was beautiful. It distracted me a little as I tried to walk on three hooves. The four remaining comics in my hoof kept slipping sideways. This just isn't working. Give me my hands back...wait, no. I don't want to go back... After a few minutes of clumsy attempts to keep the books balanced, with regular help, the entire group stood proud along the beach, a mere few hooves from the water. I laid the comics out on the gritty sand, and summoned the remainder of the Mane Six to my side. "These are a gift to you. I know I'm the one helping you out, but I can't help but feel grateful for the things you've done for me. I love life like this. Great friends," I winked to Rarity as I scanned across the Six, "ponies that actually make me feel valued, and...yeah! That's it, I guess. It's been a great adventure. I'll try and pick up something for everyone along the way...or perhaps I won't need to?" I looked down to my hooves and up to my hanging fringe. Maybe my presence in Equestria might be enough? How do I decide?... I've gotta think hard about this... Do not fear change, Game Changer. You may decide alone, but do not let the change stop you. Luna, is that you? Yes, young one. Look around you. Do you see judgement? Do you see hatred? Do you? Yes, Princess. I can still feel some jealousy in Dashie. Somewhere. I just feel like she's still watching us. I mean, Rarity and I. There is no doubt. But perhaps with a royal lesson, she may learn to change her ways. Are you enjoying the night? Yes, Princess. It's great. I've never appreciated it more! Good. Now, I must leave. Thanks, Luna! That seemed to help clear my mind a little. And, talking of that... I noticed the letter still in my hoof. Rarity walked towards me, looking deeply into my eyes. "Game Changer?" "Y-yeah?" I hid the letter shyly behind my back. "What was that?" She smiled playfully. "...Whose is it?" I took it in my mouth lightly and galloped into the water. "That's not fair!" I could hear a little laugh escaping her. Her voice lowered, and she said to herself, "Be stronger, Rarity. Do it for the colt." I stopped for a second, throwing her a wink. "It's on." As I turned I heard her hooves entering the water almost silently, so I picked up the pace. We laughed together, scattering refreshing drops of water around us as we played in the water. I stopped and turned to her when the water reached my knees, and I carefully took the letter from my mouth, only to have it drenched by a tackle-hug from the pretty mare. Her sweet aroma filled my snout; not of marshmallows, but like the taste of sweet sugar. Just like it had before, her mane tumbled over my shoulder. "Good to see you aren't so scared any more," I grinned. "Worried about your mane?" "Of course not," she smiled. "Unless you are..." "I don't mind," I smiled. "You look great!" "Anyway...the letter?" I handed it to her happily. She read it aloud, her eyes watering. "If it ever gets tough, if you ever go back to Equestria, just remember that I'm still out there. Keep this, remember us. If you don't go back home, I'll say this. I love you. I'm sorry I didn't leave you with a graphic novel, but hopefully I've started a great story you're going to love being the main character of! Game Changer, or Simon." "So...what did you think?" "Oh, Game..." She hugged me tightly, tackling me onto my back. "I'm..." She was speechless. I think I did OK. A little later, we came across a campsite. It'd been left open since we had entered this world - I hypothesised that this world is a version of the real world, lacking humans and frozen in time at the exact moment one entered, almost like a backup. All the tents were still up, conveniently. Everypony dashed for a free tent with their best friends at their sides. The Cutie Mark Crusaders had packed their own, in fear of tiring out early. None of that mattered to me, though. I'd had a lot of fun with Rarity, but I could still feel Dash near me, in fury, alone. She wasn't a mare I wanted as an enemy, but I didn't love her, either. Sat alone on a log, I looked across at the Six. Rarity trotted over to the Princesses, and in her wake was a trail of almost-visible green envy. The source? Rainbow Dash, of course. A clearly audible growl filled the space. "I'm done with this!" she cried out, disappearing in the blink of an eye. Not a single eye missed her outrage. This world was as dangerous to ponies as the Everfree Forest, and they all knew it. Dash, now a lone ranger, too cocky for her own good, always the bad example...had gone. She'd die. It didn't matter if she was doing it for me. I didn't care. I had to go. //-------------------------------------------------------// %i% - Alone, Together //-------------------------------------------------------// 16 - Alone, Together "Rarity," I panted. "I'll be gone for...I don't know how lo –" "You're not giving in to her, are you?" She looked worried and fragile. "Of course not, I'm trying to do the opposite. Wish me luck," I smiled, leaving. Rarity caught my airborne hoof, dragging me to the ground. With one kiss, I was free to leave. Time to save us. Everyone. If we've got a broken Dash that leaves all of the Elements of Harmony out of question when it comes to using them as weapons, especially when we have a massive battle just around the corner from our campsite... I darted into the overgrown forest near us. It was nearly pitch black, with just the tiniest moon reflection giving me a little help. Whoa, looks like they were right about the carrots. Rainbow Dash was clearly visible. Her mane didn't do her any favours. "Hey, Dash!" I whipped over to her side, taking on a soft tone. "I'm so sorry. I'm thinking of you...it's just...envy doesn't get you anywhere. What if Rare and I aren't having such a great time after all?" "Hmph. You guys seemed crazy in the water earlier. You're happy!" She was enraged, no doubt. After a long pause, a thought hit me. I spoke it, aloud. "Dash, want to spend some time with me? Alone?" "When?" "Now." "Eh...sure." Little did she know that this was a test. A test of her will, of her true envy. Maybe it was to be a test for me, too, since if she failed, things would be worse for all of us. We spoke for what felt like forever, about many things – her life, how it felt to Sonic Rainboom...and eventually the more personal things like her greatest fears, now that she trusted me. I stayed careful; my loyalty was with Rarity and that wasn't going to change for anypony. A dream slipped into my mind, silent as Luna herself. Maybe it was her after all? Tests are for eggheads. The only tests I'll take are of my awesomeness, spoke the image of Rainbow Dash in my mind. Somehow, it didn't seem like her actual thoughts, but a dream. "Wait a second...I just heard something...." Having let her shyer side crawl out from behind the solid statue of a cool, confident Rainbow Dash, the mare clung to me as I spoke. No, don't lose it, I begged. Don't put me there. Don't kiss me. Don't kiss me. Part of me expected her to shower me in over-romantic cliches. Another expected her to just kiss me, like she'd never done it before. Another just held on to its sanity for fear that it might be thrown out of the window by the new queen of rage. No. Relieve yourself, Game Changer. She cannot take you from your greatest love if she is undeserving. Do not fear. The inevitable will come. And it did. Luna was right. Rainbow Dash had failed the test of her envy, and a storm was to brew. My eyes were pinned open in shock. My face was as red as my hair used to be, not that I missed it at all. Everything was out of place, except my lips. She'd landed a perfect hit, hers on mine. I couldn't pull away. The only things free to move were my eyes, which wandered like plan-lacking idiots in the Alps without maps. Anything. Anything but those eyes. Her lashes stroked my face as they lifted. No...this isn't happening...there's no reason for me to go on... I couldn't leave. Fate had glued me in place to endure the torture. "So," Rainbow spoke in a low voice, "was that the ride of your life or what? Hearing things? Heh, well played!" She winked. "I was serious. Luna was our witness, and trust me, she's with me on this one. I don't want to make things worse for you, I know I might, but...it's my choice, and I'm staying with Rarity." "Staying with Rarity?" She spoke at the same time as me, an obvious trick to sway me. I wasn't falling for anything...or anyone, Rarity aside. "Why would you do that?" I also wouldn't let her unleash my anger. She wasn't worth it. "Well...she got me first, and I like her, so..." "Is that all?...is that all!?" Her true emotions were beginning to show. That wasn't love, and I knew it. "Why don't you cut past the dainty dresses and stupid shoes and get to where it's at? That's me! Don't you see it?" "I...No!...Um..." I turned away from her, trying to think. She rested on me, seemingly still thinking there was progress to be made. "Rainbow Dash..." I sighed. "I'm sorry. This is how it's meant to be. It's something none of us can change, but..." I stopped restraining myself so much. As much as Rarity was a great friend to have, so was Dash. Her body felt cool resting against me. I sunk into the feeling a little more. Maybe I should've taken her for her personality behind the mask of that cool, heroic Rainbow Dash everyone else sees. Maybe I chose wrong. Maybe... "...it's something I'll do my best to. It'll take time." "Thanks..." She smiled up to me, drifting off to sleep. Nononononowait! We've gotta get back!.... "Hang on tight, Dash!" I lifted the mare up with my front hooves and did my best to drag her through the sky. My efforts were no better than a falling, burning plane. Oh no...am I gonna have to pick her up? Oh...no... I swung her up into my arms. "Game..." she murmured in her sleep. "I..." No, Dash. No. Please, no! "Love..." My thoughts soon flew out between my gritted teeth. "Nonononono...no, no!" The worst thing worsened. *** Her eyelids rose with the grace of ballet dancers and the style of automatic garage doors. I can't do this. No. No. I stopped on the spot. "Hey, don't stop," she croaked. She can't have slept long enough for that voice to kick in! "Keep going," she continued. "Anyway, where was I?" Something slipped around my neck, and something else. I turned to realise I was wrapped in her embrace, frozen by her loving eyes. "Y'know, love's more fun if it's not meant to be..." I wished for blankness. Her kiss had thrown me into wild brainspin once more. Do I choose her? What about Rarity? Hey, Mr. Optional Sidequest! Wake up! You're getting too loved-up, I don't like it. Starlow? Why didn't you say so? Ugh, I was too busy throwing up. But you can't, right? Strange magical discharge, my friend. I can't explain it. Never mind, you carry on. You're in a mess, pull yourself out. But just trust me, whichever way you go, it'll be worth it. For Equestria, for the mare, and for you. Trust me. Bye! Heh, nice insight. But could you clean up my mind first?...Eh, he's gone. I woke to find the kiss still in motion. Whichever way you go... I decided on leaving both checkboxes empty. I was confused, so I just enjoyed the kiss. I wish this would last. I wish Rarity didn't have to... I stuffed a mental hoof in my mental mouth. No, I can't just wish her away! No! I guess I'll just have to wait for my mind to clear... //-------------------------------------------------------// %i% - The Darkness //-------------------------------------------------------// 17 - The Darkness With Dash sleeping silently in my arms, I returned to the group, fearing for Rarity. Well, y'know what they say...hell hath no fury like a mare scorned... The crowd began to cheer until I held a hoof to my mouth, motioning for them to be silent. Light applause still continued, calming as the ocean waves, as I laid the jealous lover to rest. Dash...Rarity...damn, I just wish there was someone else who'd make them both go aw – Before I could finish, I was mentally slapped across the face by a warning hoof. You can't leave her, she likes you! And if you don't go to Dashie, then who've you got? I just wish someone would be grateful, Starlow, instead of just begging and getting nowhere... Anyway, isn't the Parasprite meant to be the focus here? Yeah...but...their feelings should come first, don't you think? Putting two mares before the whole of Equestria...and beyond? I don't think so. We'd better move. But aren't we lacking enough musical talent? Nah, of course not! Anyway, what happened to the rest of the bronies dropping in to help? Wasn't something about that mentioned? I'm not sure... I could feel Starlow's fear. I don't even know if they're out there... I'm beginning to doubt that, too. Maybe the princesses could give us hints? Yeah, go and try that. The crowd had returned to their tents, beginning to sleep. Even Princess Celestia had retired to her large tent. Luna, however, still remained, to watch over her precious night. "Princess Luna?" I called, feeling doubtful of the future. "Game Changer...I sense darkness near us." Luna looked serious, as ever. "What do you mean, Princess?" "I feel discord and jealousy in the air..." I nodded to her. "However, I also sense great power. Not within your loved one, or even the one you consider turning your affections to." "Yeah?..." "Not within your fellow heroes, either. Their power is far away, perhaps in the direction of our quest..." "No way...you're telling me that Discord's captured them?" "It is a possibility. But before your mind strays to those out of your circle of influence, please think on this. Consider your true feelings for the two mares right now. Are you certain that what you feel is true? I must ensure we are in no danger tonight, and with that I must leave. I wish you luck." I nodded confidently, thinking of what Luna had just said. Rubbing my eyes, I realised I was tired. I stumbled into Rarity's tent doubtfully as my wind whirred with thoughts. Doesn't she look a little...desperate? Yeah, she loves me, but...perhaps I don't want everything she's got to offer me? And isn't Dash just burning with jealousy too? That's not a nice trait if it's directed at another single stallion...Which way do I go? A pretty blue pegasus watched on, her honey-yellow mane clouding her view. //-------------------------------------------------------// %i% - Sleepless In...An Alternate Reality? //-------------------------------------------------------// 18 - Sleepless In...An Alternate Reality? That night, I tossed and turned. My head stuck in constant brainspin, Luna tried to console me through my dreams...if I was even having them, that was. I stared blankly at the roof of the tent, Rarity by my side. I lacked the energy and resolve to put my faith in her. Perhaps we were dying out. But my thoughts weren't swaying to Rainbow Dash either. I couldn't bear the thought of being alone once more, but perhaps it had to happen... Why are you stuck on those two! Shouldn't you be thinking about the battle?... I guess... I sighed. Yeah...you're right. That's more important. Why so blank-minded, anyway? Don't get hung up on them, they're getting in your way! No! Don't put it like that! Maybe you're right, but I can't let you say things like that! Who's the destiny pilot here? Me! Yeah, that's right, Game Changer. You're the co-star here. Hmph...you're right. And I guess that makes you right about Rarity and Rainbow... I might be a little harsh, but trust me, I know my stuff. I was made for this. OK... Also, I know something you don't. What's that? There's a pretty mare out there, who's just left a decent stallion – Tell me! Tell me! And d'you know who she's looking for? The excitement in Starlow's voice was putting me on edge. Maybe she was out there, that perfect pony... Someone who'd stay by my side, no matter what, and understand me, and help me. That was the mare I wanted. Maybe she was out there... It's you, Game Changer. And trust me, when you find her, you're gonna love her. Hey! I need hints! Who is this mare? Not telling~ Starlow's voice was now annoyingly singsong. I had to find her. Maybe she was the key...the key to the rest of my life, to Equestria, to the final fall of Discord... Only time would tell.
