“I’m the best flyer all of Equestria, I don’t need such a stupid egghead test to prove that!” Rainbow Dash’s angry shout echoed through the library, making even the walls tremble. She furiously left the kitchen and stomped upstairs to the bedroom, directly followed by the lavender unicorn. To keep Spike from further overhearing the conversation – if you could call their mutual abuse, which was already holding on for almost half an hour, like that – Twilight slammed the bedroom door shut behind them.
“If you’re as good as you say, then the exam shouldn’t be a problem at all,” Twilight snorted as she already had more than enough from her marefriend’s stubbornness. “I didn’t make the rules Rainbow, you know that as well. But what I actually think is that you’re a coward right now. There’s no other explanation for not doing the test!” she tried to say as calmly as possible, but wasn’t really able to control the volume of her angry voice any longer.
“I’m not a coward just because I don’t want to do a stupid test!” Rainbow Dash yelled again as something suddenly felt strange.
Twilight groaned in annoyance “I can’t believe you’re that ignorant, Rainbow! From your first day in the academy you knew that there would be a final written exam! And I remember you exactly saying that it even makes sense because Wonderbolts need to have basic knowledge about aerodynamics and that stuff anyway!”
“Twi’...” the blue mare anxiously tried to cut the infuriated unicorn off.
“No, I listened to your pointless whining and ranting for half the day, it’s my turn to finally speak now! Not just you, but we went through a lot of trouble and hardships during the past months. How do you think it felt for me to only see my marefriend on every second weekend because she had to stay at the training grounds all the time? Do you think it was fun for me? Do you think I enjoyed being all alone?” Twilight continued her grumbling, using berserk stomps to put extra emphasis on some of her words.
“Twi’...” Rainbow Dash tried to interject again, but the raging unicorn just ignored the pegasus’ weak attempt.
“I’m not finished yet! During the past months I sacrificed a lot that we were able to see each other and be together! You don’t know how I feel at all! I gave up my research studies in Canterlot and my promotion to laboratory assistant at the Manehattan University just that we can be together as much as possible! I always have taken care for both of us just that you can live up to your dreams and become a Wonderbolt! And I tell you, you’re going to become a hell of a Wonderbolt! You’re going to be the best Wonderbold ever! But for being accepted in the Wonderbolts you have to take this exam, if you like it or not! And I advise you to like it!” The unicorn screamed at the blue mare.
“TWI’!!!” Rainbow Dash shouted, overwhelmed by sudden pain, just a moment before she broke down on the floor.
“Oh no, Rainbow, not this time. I’m not going to fall for this kind of trick again,” Twilight angrily snorted and turned towards the door. Just the second she wanted to leave the pegasus alone so that both of them would be able to cool down a bit, she noticed heavy and terrified sobs coming from the other mare. As she threw a glance over her shoulder and saw that Rainbow Dash was lying on the ground and writhing in pain, the unicorn realized that this wasn’t some kind of a prank or diversion at all. With the most concerned of all looks she trotted to her marefriend and gently put a hoof on the heavy breathing mare’s sweaty forehead. “Rainbow... what is it?” Twilight asked with a lot of sorrow raising in her voice as she recognized the warmth radiating from her best mare’s heated body.
“I... I don’t know... it hurts... so much!” the pegasus cried, barely able to speak, holding her belly and quivering in ache while tears ran down her face and the floor below her got drenched by an undetermined liquid.
The unicorn’s horn started glowing in a light purple shine as she carefully lifted the blue mare on the mattress using her levitation spell. Kneeling herself down besides the bed and holding her beloved mare’s hoof, Twilight tried to figure out what was going on. Her thoughts were rushing, images of all the medical books she ever read were playing in front of her inner eye when she all of a sudden remembered something the couple tried to forget long ago. Her eyes turned wide and her pupils shrank to the size of pinheads as her expression changed to something between inquisitively and being shocked. It couldn’t be, could it? Was this even possible? The spell didn’t say anything about it, but it was the only logical explanation the studied unicorn was able to come up with.
Spike carefully opened the door and tentatively entered the room. “Hey Twi’... I heard quite some cries coming from in here... is everything alright?” he timidly questioned, his jaw slightly dropped when he discerned the heavy sweating and whimpering pegasus lying on the bed.
“Spike, we need hot towels, quick!” Twilight reflexively shouted in his direction, barely turning around, not daring to move her view away from Rainbow Dash.
“Wait... what’s going on here?” the baby dragon asked in worry and confusion, raising a claw to scratch his head.
“SPIKE, NOW!!!” the unicorn commanded using a sharp voice which made the dragon wince.
Spike kept distance from stating any further questions as he realized how serious Twilight was and hurried out of the room, almost with lightning speed.
Twilight’s focus completely wandered towards here marefriend again. “Rainbow, please listen to me. First of all, promise me not to panic and I promise you that everything is going to be alright, okay?” she softly said, giving the under heavy cramps suffering pegasus a pacifying look.
Even if the unicorn tried to suppress her dread, Rainbow Dash could clearly account a lot of apprehension in the violet sparkling eyes. Still, she was bearing too much pain to make any counterarguments or start another fight and if there was any pony who she could trust in such a situation, it was the mare she loved. With a weak nod she demonstrated Twilight her agreement.
“That’s my Dashie.” Twilight put on a gentle smile on her muzzle before she continued “I’ll explain now what is going to happen. You’re remembering this spell we used for a few times a while ago and never wanted to talk about again, right?”
Rainbow Dash gulped. Shaking and cloudy magenta eyes were locked on the unicorn. She didn’t like the direction this statement was heading, but feebly nodded again to signalize her marefriend to go on.
Twilight soothingly stroked the blue mare’s hoof as she continued with her explanation “Well, considering the time span that has passed since we experimented with it and your symptoms... and Rainbow, please, it is really important that you don’t panic now, there also is absolutely no reason to... it’s not going to be easy, but I’m with you and we’ll go through this together... okay?”
The pegasus kept nodding hastily, whishing for nothing more than Twilight finally getting to the point as the cramps as well as the accompanying ache continuously grew stronger.
“Dashie, I think you’re gonna have a foal.” Twilight let the bomb explode. Her words were followed by a few moments of awkward silence which for both mares seemed like an eternity.
“What?! When?!” Rainbow Dash broke the quietness with fear and terror in her voice as her whole body started uncontrollably trembling, like she completely lost mastery over it.
“Right now,” Twilight said as calm as somehow possible given the circumstances, strengthening the grasp on her marefriend’s hoof.
Rainbow Dash pressed herself against the pillow and the header of the bed behind her and breathed in deeply. “AND YOU TELL ME NOT TO PANIC?!” the pegasus cried in both, anger and pain, giving the unicorn a vicious look, just split seconds before a contraction suddenly hit her like a lightning causing her eyes to shut wide open and forcing her to gasp for air.
Spike hurriedly entered the room with a pile of hot towels on his arms “Twilight, I got the towels you wanted,” he spoke with hectic voice just before turning pale as he noticed the writhing and even heavier than before sweating pegasus on the bed.
“Just put them here beside me, contact the hospital and wait for the doctor downstairs, please.” Twilight said with the most tranquil and soothing voice, like she already had everything perfectly planned and under control.
“Okay.” The baby dragon nodded and rushed out of the room again, shutting the door behind him.
“Thanks Spike.” Twilight gratefully complemented with low voice, even if her assistant was already gone. Feeling her hoof getting squeezed, she put her focus completely on Rainbow Dash again. Using one of the towels and her levitation spell, the unicorn carefully patted the sweat from her marefriend’s forehead. The rest of the towels she unfolded on the mattress below the pegasus.
“Twi’... if I shouldn’t make it... –“ Rainbow Dash whimpered, hot tears running down her cheeks, but was directly shushed by the unicorn.
“Stop that nonsense Dashie,” Twilight cut her off, gently placing a hoof on the pegasus’ mouth “I may not be an expert in giving obstetrics, but I won’t let anything happen to you, no matter what.” She mildly returned the squeeze coming from the blue mare’s hoof, giving a reassuring look to the sad and anxious magenta eyes. “Promise.”
“Pinkie Pie promise?” Rainbow Dash asked with a shimmer of faith and hope rising on her face.
“Cross my heart, hope to fly, stick a cupcake in my eye.” Twilight did the charm with all belonging movements what visibly satisfied and calmed the frightened pegasus.
With all of her confidence, Twilight jumped on the bed and positioned herself above Rainbow Dash. “Everything is going to be fine, okay?” she comforted her marefriend once more, softly stroking through her sweaty mane.
“Okay,” Rainbow Dash responded with an eased smile adorning her face.
Twilight gave the pegasus the most affectionate of all kisses before sliding down the bed. When she noticed the already advanced stadium of the birth, a kind of relieved sigh escaped her mouth as she knew that her marefriend would have overcome it a few seconds later.
“Okay, I think it’s coming. In a few moments you’re through. Keep pressing now,” she politely commanded Rainbow Dash, hoping to be able to take some of the load from her shoulders.
The following minute, a loud and anguished scream made its way up the blue mare’s throat.
Exhausted from the procedure, Rainbow Dash let herself fall back in the sweat soaked pillow. Within an instant, all the pressure she felt as well as most of the pain she had to endure were gone. Her breath slowly calmed down and as she heard the little foal cry, a shear of relief made its way to the mother’s heart. With a warm smile she looked down the bed towards her marefriend who was just using her magic to swathe the little pony in some of the towels. As the unicorn was done, she slowly trotted towards the blue mare, carefully levitating the well covered foal in front of her.
Cautious descending the screaming foal in Rainbow Dash’s hooves and observing the overwhelming happiness raising in her magenta eyes, Twilight knew that everything was fine. “You got a wonderful daughter Dashie,” the unicorn said with a pleased smile on her muzzle, hot tears of delight running down her face.
“We got a wonderful daughter,” Rainbow Dash corrected, taking the filly off Twilight’s levitation and gently pressing it against her chest. “Whoa!” she couldn’t suppress a little outbreak of astonishment as she perceived both, the dark purple foals’ horn and wings.
Twilight smoothly sat down at the edge of the bed. “She’s something really special,” the unicorn mildly supplemented to her marefriend's reaction, wrapping a hoof around Rainbow Dash’s neck and softly lowering the other to meet one of her best mares hooves on the little filly’s flank.
“Of course she is.” Rainbow Dash responded, continuing after a short pause “She’s our daughter.” She smiled, not able to suppress tears of joy any longer. As she pulled the filly closer to her head, gently nuzzling it, two rainbow-colored manes met for the first time. “And she’s so beautiful,” the pegasus complemented with a sniff.
“Dashie... everything okay?” Twilight asked with slight concern, even if she knew that her marefriend’s reaction was coming from nothing else than overwhelming pleasure.
“It’s just Twi’... y’know... in my whole life... I never had a family...” Rainbow heavily sobbed, giving her daughter a loving kiss on the forehead. “My mother died when she gave birth to me, so I never really knew her... and my father was always busy with work and stuff...” she continued, crying with a wide smile on her face. “And now I have you... and her... I’m just so happy... so indescribably happy.”
Twilight slowly let herself down on the bed besides Rainbow Dash and her daughter, taking both in a soft embrace and giving her mare reassuring pecks on the forehead and cheeks. Some minutes passed in perfect silence and harmony while the meganta eyes omitted both, all the pain the pegasus had to suffer in the past as well as the joy about her anticipations for the future.
“I’m happy with the things as they are Twi’. I don’t need to become a fancy Wonderbolt and all that stuff if it implies that I won’t have time to spend with you, and now with little...“ For a short moment, Rainbow Dash gave a questioning glance to the unicorn, who responded to the unspoken words with a broad smile on her face and a small nod, then looked at the tiny foal in her hooves again and continued, softly whispering “... Firefly.” As Rainbow had said her name for the very first time, the little filly gave an amused chuckle from her, just as she wanted to express that she loved it.
“It may be true. I might be a coward, but I’m just because things have changed over the past months... because things have changed today... quite a lot... and there are things... there are two certain ponies that are much more important to me than becoming a Wonderbolt,” Rainbow calmly explained while mildly nuzzling and kissing Firefly’s mane.
In reaction to her mare’s sensitive words, Twilight’s smile grew even wider. “I’m sorry that I called you a coward Dashie, you’re certainly not. You’re the bravest pony I know,” she soothingly whispered in the pegasus’ ear which slightly twitched in response. “I love you.” Twilight gave a soft kiss on Rainbow Dash’s forehead.
“I love you too,” Rainbow Dash returned, making herself comfortable in the unicorn’s embrace. Twilight gently covered them under the blanket and a few minutes later, the blue pegasus as well as her newborn foal were both fast asleep.
When Spike and the doctor entered, Twilight instantly hushed them using an unequivocal gesture. The doctor quickly checked the vital signs of Rainbow Dash and Firefly without waking them up and affirmed Twilight that both were a bit exhausted, but apart from that in perfect condition. Remarking that he would pass by in the late evening to check on them once more, he left again, accompanied by the baby dragon who quietly shut the door behind them.
As the couple and her daughter were alone again, Twilight made herself comfortable as well, placing her head besides Rainbow’s so that she could perfectly feel the warmth of both other ponies. Watching her little family sleep that peacefully made everything else in the world fell into oblivion. There were no thoughts to be wasted on studies or schedules anymore and there was nothing that could possibly drive her into a crisis or cause her a breakdown again as long as there was this place where she could return to.
“You got the cutest mother all of Equestria, my little Firefly,” she softly whispered, giving her daughter a good night kiss, making the little alicorn’s smile grew even broader than it already was. “And you got the cutest daughter all of Equestria, my little Dashie.” She placed another small kiss on her mare’s forehead.
A mild breeze moved through the window and caressed the happy family. Letting herself fall into the peace and harmony she was feeling, Twilight’s eyelids turned heavy and she fell asleep as well.
