Chapter one: Should I tell her?
It was a dark day, when we finally took down Discord. He had been ruling Equestria for the past decade. Making ponies truly unhappy. Me, and my more popular sister Celestia, were gathering the elements of harmony. A power with unlimited potential, and one that belonged only to us. We were truly harmonious sisters back then. Inseparable.
That is why we were chosen by the most powerful ponies, the Alicorns to be the ones to stop Discord. Our power over harmony was enough to impress the proud Alicorn race. It impressed them enough for them to (For the first time) accept two unicorns as equals. So they gave us our wings, and even greater power than before.
Unfortunately, by giving us this power, the last of the Alicorns were weakened. Discord saw the chance, and defeated them, one by one. The already rare Alicorn race became all but extinct. However, Discord was unsure of what caused the Alicorns to become a wavering species. He had no idea that there were still two left, more powerful than the best of ponies.
This was what led to his downfall. He had no clue that there was somepony left strong enough to defeat him. Let alone two. We used the elements of harmony to defeat Discord once and for all. He became stone, and so started the story of the two remaining alicorns.
Nopony was left to summon the day and the night though. So for one week, the ponies of Equestria lived in an unending twilight. I went to my sister to discuss this problem, about half-way through the week. I walked into our parent's old home. Hoping that with our combined powers, we could bring the ponies a day and a night once more. "Sister!" I said.
Celestia turned to me. "Yes, Luna?" Her mane had begun to change. While it was at one point, a solid pink, it began getting new colors as she needed a way to vent some of the magic that coursed through her. My mane was changing aswell. The dark blue began growing little sparkles. Glimmering like stars in the sky.
"We should take over the rising of the sun and the moon. The ponies are growing tired. Many of them cannot sleep in this perpetual dusk. I thinkist we should do something to help them!" I said, sternly. I was ready for my sister to spout out some other idea, and ready to defend my own solution.
She turned to a window, the house creaked under her weight. That's how old houses were though. And this one had seen years of abandonment. "I agree, sister. The day and night must exist for harmony to be restored upon this land. If you wish it, we could make a new empire. One that had no king. No queen. Only the princesses, Celestia and Luna. Always and forever. With nopony making all of the decisions. We will both work together to make Equestria prosper. And by doing so, we will be revered. Nothing can stop us from being what we were meant to be since the day we got our wings!" She turned to me and smiled. I was slightly drawn aback.
'Rulers of Equestria? That's quite ambitious. Are the ponies really her main concern here?' I looked at her. She was always one to go above and beyond... I nodded to her. "Yes. That is what we shall do. But from where would we rule?"
Celestia walked out of the house. I followed her as I waited for my answer. She looked up, behind the house. Our parents' house was just below a cliff. This was the cliff of . She pointed to the face of this cliff, and smiled. "There. That is where we will build our castle! We can build it in by the end of the week with the help of Starswirl the bearded!"
'I suppose it wouldn't do any harm to have a nice place to live.' I thought to myself. "Sure, sister. We shall begin tomorrow, I suppose?"
My sister nodded. And with a short goodbye, she left to find her friend Starswirl.
I however, had my doubts about all of this. And who would control the sun? And the moon? I had supposed that I would control the moon, since my mane, coat, and cutie mark were all those that insisted that I belonged to the night. As I always had. That would mean that Celestia would have the sun.
This didn't bother me much. She always enjoyed the daytime more than I did.
I decided to fly around a bit. I certainly couldn't sleep with the daylight and the moonlight mixing together. I stopped at a settlement, where I sat and waited for my older sister to tell me to begin construction with her.
Hours later, she came back with Starswirl the bearded, and sent a beacon to the sky, to catch my attention. I flew over as fast as I could, and we began working on this castle that my sister had so desperately wanted. Starswirl was a grey unicorn. He was quite old, and had no friends other than Celestia. Who saw him as a talented friend, and great teacher. He was the height of the average pony, but he always wore a hat with a bell on it. This hat made him seem almost as tall and my sister. He also wore a cloak, because he grew up in the days of the Windegoes. The days that disharmony caused an everlasting winter.
He treated me as if I didn't exist, mostly because he didn't approve of how I set the bar for myself. Always just short of my sister... Just short of "Perfection"
Half a week had passed, and we began settling into our new home. "Shall we raise the sun now?" I asked.
My sister nodded, and she raised the sun as I lowered the moon. Honestly, I was unsure of why I let the day come first. What the ponies had truly needed was sleep. They were exhausted from their week of soft light. But I digress. 'My turn will come soon, and the ponies will get their much needed sleep.
Not twenty minutes later, there was a large crowd of ponies outside our unpainted stone castle. Celestia was tired, and had to focus all of her energy on the sun. I decided to go address our new kingdom in her place. I stepped onto the balcony. The ponies on the far down ground were loud. But separate.
One side of the crowd was praising us for taking charge to make the day possible once more. Another was angry, for the night was not here yet. And finally, a third... enraged at the idea that there were monarchs in a castle once more going so far as to shout that they wished Discord would return to dethrone us. I looked down on the ponies, and decided to do my best to appease them.
"Citizens of Equestria! I am sure that you have noticed the sun, high in the sky! I am happy that you appreciate our work! And as for those of you who are waiting for your chance to slumber! Thou should know that the moon will rise soon enough! You shall have your rest when night falls! And to those of you who believe us corrupt, I assure you that we are to be just, and kind rulers! No decision is to be made by one pony alone!" I yelled to them.
While most of them responded with cheers, I noticed a group of about four-hundred of them shaking their hoofs at me and leaving in anger. My gut told me that nothing good could come of this. 'Should I tell my sister that there are ponies who dislike us? Or should I let our rule speak for itself?'

So, this is something that I haven't done yet. A head canon fic. I have to admit, I kinda have a bias towards Luna. She is best princess, after all. And I know it's been done before. But I just REALLY wanted to write it.

Chapter two: A faction struggle
It was a few hours after my speech to the public, when my sister told me that it was finally time to raise the moon. I sat out on the balcony, and focused my magic solely on making the moon rise and the stars shine. I knew that the ponies would need their sleep, so I dimmed the moonlight a bit, and made sure the stars were few in numbers. I then watched the kingdom that I had grown to love as it slept in the embrace of darkness for the first time in seven days. and I could feel the elements' power was stronger than ever before. Celestia and I were happy with our way of helping everypony.
But not everypony was happy. There was a group of ponies who disliked the very idea of having princesses that ruled the day and night. They had been yelling threats at the top of their lungs earlier that day, and there were still a few protesters under the balcony, where they had finally gotten their much needed sleep.
The next morning, I was strained. I had never had to move something as large as the moon. And I had never had to continue slowly moving something for 12 straight hours before. I went to my room, and closed the door. My windowless room had no light, so that I could sleep in the day, when I needed sleep the most.
Before long, my sister came into my room, filling the room with outside light. I looked to her and rubbed my tired eyes. "W-what is it, Tia? What brings you in here before the night?"
She looked to me, eyes filled with confusion. "I-it appears that there are ponies who do not wish us to rule. While the majority seem to be relieved... There is a gathering in the mid-north of our kingdom. It's a troop rally, sister." She said. As she said this, my eyes shot open.
"They would bring war when we finally have peace?!" I asked. Celestia nodded, her mane began falling flat, instead of seeming to be carried by an unknown wind like it had been since we had received our powers.
I got out of my bed and walked out onto the balcony. Tia followed closely behind. She pointed to a clearing in the Everfree forest, where smoke rose from a large fire... No... Many small fires. As if a hundred ponies each lit a torch, and are now showing us their collective numbers. "I suppose peace will not be so simple. We shall prepare to defend ourselves. The ponies of Equestria might have to go just one more sleepless day, Luna." Celestia looked to me, as if she required confirmation. I simply nodded.
"I shall search for ponies who wish to help our cause of peace. But sister, please promise me that we don't have to kill anypony..." I said, sternly.
"Sister, I don't want to kill anypony either. I promise that using such brutality is the last thing I want." She crossed her heart.
I nodded and took off without another word. I had nothing more to say about the subject of war. I waved farewell to my sister, and flew towards one of the small settlements to the south. I saw Tia jump down into the colony that had formed under our castle at the base of the cliff.
After a few minutes of flying, I landed at the small settlement of The Apple.The settlers there were usually very good at engineering. Things like catapults, cannons, ovens, and automatic tools were what we needed, and I was sure that they could make these things both intimidating, and non-lethal.
Four engineers joined me, two earth ponies, a unicorn, and a pegasus.
I then found a group of farmers, living on the edge of the Everfree forest. They were strong and healthy from farm work, and I asked if they could grow enough food to feed a troop of 50 ponies. They agreed, and gave me four days of rations, consisting of apples, hay, bread, and water. Enough of each to feed 60 ponies for 4 days. I thanked them, and went on my way. I had my engineers head to the castle settlement to take orders from my sister, and flew over to a small area in the clouds, filled with great warriors, where I met Commander Hurricane, who let me borrow 30 of his troops, all of whom were sent straight to the Castle Colony.
I flew to a clearing in the forest, where a group of ten ponies were nursing a bird back to health. I convinced one pegasus to come with me, as we traveled to another small settlement. Where we met two ponies. A blacksmith, and a scholar. Both were unicorns, and they quickly ran to the castle when I told them of our predicament.
I myself headed home. I got there and looked over the army I had gathered, as well as the colonists who had joined because of Tia.
I was now sure that if the need arises, we would be ready for A faction struggle.
