An Artist’s Cake

Another stroke, finishing touches and done. The pale-blue pegasus placed down the paintbrush, which he used to paint a picture a moment ago. A special picture to be precise and this picture was about somepony special for this young stallion...
His brown eyes scanned over the masterpiece and he brushed away his long, brown mane from before his sight, to see that certain mare on the once white sheet more clearly. As he was backing away from the painting, he admired his work from full view. Once he had a good two meters distance between his working place and himself, he resumed taking into the view before him. But was he admiring the picture? Or the mare on that plain surface?
''Wubcake...'' He whispered to himself and only in his mind’s deepest pit, he wished that the mare would reply.
Instead, the smiling form of a brown earth pony mare was all he received. He couldn’t rip down his gaze from the mare’s magenta eyes, which stared right back at him, with friendly intentions.
As a friend... not as a lover...
He kept on staring at her, taking into every detail about the pony, who he cared about a lot. Her mane. How much he marveled on her mane. Nearly as much as he spent time on losing himself in those two pools of purple.
Occasionally, he got the chance to be right next to her, so close that he was able to breath in her mane’s scent. The first time this occasion happened, he was pleasantly surprised, when he found out that her mane doesn’t have the scent of sweets. No, that two colored, light and dark brown mane had the scent of vanilla and the two shades of brown just made it more exotic for him.
Not like he wouldn’t like her in that way, of course. But it was good to smell something else than cupcakes, after each visit to Sugarcube Corner.
They always had their lunch there... only their lunch, not their dinner...
The pegasus smiled at that memory, when Wubcake burst out of laughter, after a pony had thought she was part of the cake family. Given her name and cutie mark, which was a cupcake with three red scars on it, the misunderstanding made the mare to slam her hoof down onto the table in her hysterical state...
He loved her laughter and her giggle caused him many times, to force himself back from expressing his opinion about her lovely voice...
As he was losing himself in the picture, he soon ended up seeing the picture in a different way. The mare in question - and on the picture - was now looking at him lovingly. His hooves were already moving on their own and under seconds, he was right in front of the painting, the face of the mare in full focus.
The corner of his vision became blurry and an unknown force pulled his face closer to the sheet, completely losing himself in the mare’s eyes.
Then he felt the cold surface of the painted sheet, right on his lips...
He jumped backwards, away from the painting and he quickly wiped down any possible paint from his lips, whilst shaking his head a few times. What was he doing? Developing such feelings? How and when did he-?
And soon, the pieces fell into their own places, giving him the the answers not just to these questions, but also gave him the solution to his strange behaviour in the recent times...
The drawings, which turned into paintings about the mare. His daydreams at the most unwanted moments. Him losing himself in her beautiful eyes. The slight pang in his chest, when they parted from each other every day and only her scent lingered in his nose, as a reminder about her. And now this?
He didn’t want it to be true. He always told himself that he will remain her friend, nothing more, nothing less. He knew he had strong feelings, but always ignored them, in order to make both of their lives easier. He didn’t want to acknowledge the feelings, which clouded his mind.
But as time went by, these feeling slowly seeped onto the surface, to this point, where he couldn’t stop himself.
Growling in frustration, he stomped up to the painting and with a firm kick, let the whole pedestal to fall to the side. However, after the sound of crashing met with his ears, he gasped and quickly picked up the painting with his hooves and inspected it for any damage.
This time... he allowed himself to just check if the mare itself had any scratch...
He wanted to blame somepony else, but blaming his ‘problem’ herself wasn’t appealing for him. How could he be mad at her, for that matter? She meant a lot to him, after all...
‘’Wubcake... I...’’ He tried, but realized that the painting won’t react to those three words. THOSE three words, which were always on the tip of his tongue, every time he zoned out next to his crush...
Besides... he should tell this to her personally, not through some lifeless painting and hoping that the words will reach the real mare’s ears somehow...
But who was he, to try his luck with that mare? Just an artist, working under an alias, which was Mayde Edits...
And she? Her kindness was exemplary! She always helped on the younger ponies and the local elementary school even hired her to read for the foals, since she could change her voice perfectly for some foal-tales.
The humorous things she could say and made both of them laugh merrily on the streets of Ponyville.
Her tender and caring personality, which hid away her wild and lively attitude.
In many ways, she beat the stallion by miles. The question just became harder: Who was he, to even have a CHANCE with a mare so positive like her?
He hung his head and hugged the painting, wishing that it would be his love herself in his hooves. He wanted it to be real. Wanted it so badly. Now his hopes were wants, but he had no chance at all, to get his wish...
But he could get answers...
Answers to questions, which hadn’t come to his mind yet: Can he actually find the will to at least ask her? Can he confess his long-ago buried-away love towards the mare? Does he actually capable of leaving behind his fears and face his problems?
Yes, he had to ask her at least! His fears may have been stronger before, but with a new way of thinking, he collected himself and the needed bravery, to face down his fears. After all, if he keeps going like this, eventually he will crack under the pressure and ruin their friendship. At least it worth a try!
He could do it! He just needed a way to actually do it...
Picking himself up from the floor, he was relieved to see the painting intact, considering what he had done to it moments ago...
With a new-found determination, he kissed the painting once more, before putting it inside a frame and packing that into wrapping paper.
Then he proceeded to slip some bits into his saddlebag, tied the painting onto his back and then off he went, descending towards his possible, future marefriend’s house...
The setting sun shone down upon him and it helped him to calm his nerves. He had a good feeling about his plan. And even if it won’t work, at least he made a fool of himself in front of her... FOR her!
Her house came into view and when he landed, he literally skipped towards the front door, before knocking on the door...
He heard the sound of hooves, approaching the door and he quickly adjusted himself. Mane looking presentable, breath not smelly and he tried his best to stay casual. At the back of his mind, the fear of failure lurked about, but his confidence and cheerful mood scared it away under a second.
The hooves on the opposite side of the door, came to a halt. ‘’Here goes nothing...’’ He breathed out quietly and prepared himself. ‘’Focus, pick the words carefully, act cool and only lead her to the right direction.’’ He reminded himself in his head and just after he exhaled a small amount of air, the door opened...
‘’Mayde!’’ Cried out the mare, happiness and surprise in her voice and present on her face, too. ‘’What brings you here? Wanna come inside?’’ She stepped to the side, motioning inside her house.
‘’Cheerful reply, accept the offer.’’ He told himself in his head and not a moment later, he nodded. ‘’Hi Wubcake! Yes, if it isn’t a bother...’’
‘’Of course not, make yourself at home!’’
While Mayde walked inside, he noted her mood. It was cheerful and she visibly felt happy to see him. He found her in a good mood, that was a plus for him...
Still... she was just his friend. Something which he will change soon, hopefully for the better...
In the living room, he placed his thing onto the couch, then turned around to face the mare. She had just finished closing the door and was stepping inside the living room area. ‘’So what brings you here? I thought you were busy in the afternoons... and the evenings.’’ She corrected herself, after she glanced at the clock on the wall.
‘’Confirm her statement, tell her the good news and ask her out.’’ Again, he told himself what to do and was already started his reply. ‘’Yes, I usually busy. But looks like this afternoon and evening brought a lot of free time for me. And since I had nothing to do, I thought we can go out tonight. I knew you always wanted to spend some more time with me, so...’’ He purposely shrugged, keeping his intentions hidden.
‘’Ah, that’s very nice from you! So where are we going? Oh and Sugarcube Corner is closed, so if you were planning on going there-’’
‘’I thought we could go to a restaurant.’’
Surprise fully overcome her face, when Mayde cut in. ‘’What to do? What to do? Remain calm and smile slightly. Yes, no suspiciousness!’’ And he did just that.
‘’A restaurant you say?’’ Started smiling again Wubcake. It looked like his expression worked, since the mare sounded interested in the idea.
‘’Yes.’’ Nodded Mayde, confirming her. ‘’Don’t worry, it’s not one of those high classed ones. No snobs or over did makeup on each mare... or those hard hats.’’ He shivered at the thought itself and just so she would take his words true.
‘’Hmm, sounds really nice. Then, we can actually get going right now, right?’’ She asked, one hoof already in the air to turn around and leave. After Mayde nodded, she eventually put her hoof down and glanced at his stuff on the couch. She found it strange and raised an eyebrow in confusement. ‘’What’s in the bag and why are you carrying around that... wrapped up thing? Were you in the middle of a painting delivery?’’
‘’Okay, the first sticky question.’’ He expected such moments and he knew he will eventually have to say something brave, which could give away his intentions.
‘’Oh, I just brought here some things for later. After all, we won’t be at the restaurant for the whole evening, anyways...’’ He answered, waving a hoof dismissively. That seemed to be fair enough for her, because after she agreed with him, she told him to follow her out.
The way to the restaurant was spent in small talk, mostly telling each other how fun it will be. Wubcake always wanted to spends some more time with him and his unexpected visit cheered her up very well. For Mayde’s luck, he didn’t notice any kind of suspicion in her voice. So with a relief, he kept on giving himself, like he usually did.
After all, SHE told him a long time ago, to just be himself, because she likes him that way...
At the restaurant, they conversed about their usual things. Wubcake told him about her time with the foals and Mayde told him how he received such a free afternoon. It was a lie, but this time, he allowed himself to speak falsely to her. After all, he kept his feelings as a secret and as they were talking, he carefully added some charm to it. So coming up with a little story in connection with his free time, wasn’t that big of a sin...
His plan worked perfectly. Wubcake remained oblivious about his intentions and didn’t take his small comments in the wrong way. His praises had been taken as some friendly gestures, but that was part of his plan. Hidden signs about his intentions did good for him and after they had finished dinner and started their way back to her house, Mayde already built up enough courage to talk to her without any problem. So with that, he kept on going with compliments, to Wubcake’s joy...
However, Mayde’s confidence dropped a little, when they got back to her house. The final part of his plan. He went over several things in his head, coming up with the best ways to confess his feelings.
They entered the living room and in her cheerful state, Wubcake hopped onto the couch and picked up the painting. ‘’So, you brought this painting for the evening. I take it you’re interested in my opinion?’’
Mayde smiled at that. ‘’You have no idea...’’ He thought, then nodded at her. ‘’Yes. Go one, open it.’’ Meanwhile, he opened up to his saddlebag, then proceeded to search for a certain disk.
After feeling around for a while, he found what he had been hiding. Pulling it out, he glanced at his possibly-future-marefriend, who was busy trying to open the enveloped painting. He smiled with the disk in his mouth, then turned to the radio.
The plan was timed perfectly...
He placed the disk inside and left it there for the song to play. ‘’I made that for you.’’ He said, turning around to look at her.
‘’Hmm?’’ And just as she questioned him, she pulled down the paper from the painting. Her mouth opened in awe, when she laid her eyes upon the masterpiece, made by her most liked friend.
‘’Okay, here we go...’’ Mayde took in a deep breath, then started the final stage of his plan. The moment of truth had began...
‘’You’ve been in my head for a long time now. And not just at times, each day, throughout twenty four hours. I can’t think of anything, but about you and the times we’ve shared so far. Every time we part, I just want to run after you. I cannot get enough of you and sometimes I just want to scream after you.’’
‘’I kept this as a secret, because I didn’t want to make things complicated. But I can’t lie to you anymore! I just can’t live without you knowing something, that you should have known about long ago...’’
The song started and Mayde got ready to achieve his life’s biggest goal...
‘’Wubcake... I want to tell you something...’’ And with that, he started singing as best as he could.
The mare was already dumbfounded by his pre-speech, but when he started singing, she started to realize what he was getting at. She glanced at the painting; thought back to the unexpected, but pleasant dinner; finally recognized his secret signs, which gave her a clearer picture about the situation and her eyes wandered over to him.
‘’Mayde...’’ She whispered, loss at words. Her best friend, who cared about her a lot and shared mutual feelings with him... singing for her, showering her with the most wonderful things, that a mare could ever ask for...
She slowly lowered the painting back to the couch and just sat there, listening to him with an open mouth and wide eyes. And he? He sang out his heart for her...
By the time the song ended, Wubcake had managed to close her mouth and simply stare at him in amazement. Mayde finished the song by giving into the last word everything. He didn’t care if the neighbours could hear him, he only cared about his love and the feelings inside him. He didn’t bother thinking about the consequences, he had already stopped
listening to his brain and instead...
… let his heart leading him...
The song came to its end and he looked at her, mouth slightly agape from the previous performance. ‘’Wubcake... I love you...’’
His heart missed a beat, when he said that. He said IT! In front of her, audibly and... honestly. He managed to catch his breath and waited for the mare of his dreams, to finally say something. The moment of truth... will soon come to an end. Wubcake’s words will be the ones, which will decide upon the future...
The mare in question, blinked a few times, opened her mouth to speak, but nothing came out. She finally walked up to Mayde, who closed his eyes submissively, waiting for her choice. He either receive a strong hit to his nose, or his plan worked and didn’t ruin their relationship... he hoped it will be the latter one...
Meanwhile, Wubcake was now right in front of him, breathing hard and heart beating faster than usual. When she stopped, her hooves could be heard and Mayde couldn’t take it anymore, so he opened his eyes. Two pools of magenta greeted him and he suddenly forgot how to breath...
Wubcake’s eyes watered up and a smile formed on her face. Suddenly, she lunged at him, hooves wrapped around his shoulders and held him dearly. And before Mayde could form up any response, he was pretty sure that his heart just stopped.
Wubcake... his once best friend... planted her soft lips on his...
Her eyes were closed and her eyelashes spark from the newly formed tears. Mayde tried to keep his eyes open, but bliss took over his body and slowly, he too closed his eyes. He felt her kiss and it was amazing. And knowing that she loved him, brought the whole experience to a higher level of tranquility.
For a while, they stood there, not wanting to move away from each other. Lips locked, they gave into each other’s feelings and they wanted more from each other.
Eventually, they parted their lips, breathing for air and Wubcake was the first one to open her eyes. Her joy was so uncontainable, that she smiled pleasantly, before hugging her new coltfriend.
Mayde was finally able to open his eyes and he slowly formed back his mouth to normal. One of his hoof found its place around Wubcake’s head and he tenderly twirled her locks around in her mane. Oh, how much he wanted to do that. He always fantasized about her mane’s touch and he was glad to find her mane silk-like...
Wubcake giggled at his touch and started speaking. ‘’Mayde, I love you too. Actually, I think I’ve been in love with you for a while now. But... as you said... I didn’t want to make things complicated. You have a stressful life and I didn’t want to risk our friendship. I would have hated myself, if I make your days harder because of me. I knew you cared about me... a lot, actually and I knew that if I confess, but you wouldn’t agree, then I would become really sad. And it would effect you too, because I know I mean a lot to you...’’
She tightened her grasp around him and she giggled in excitement. Mayde in turn, smiled happily to her her voice. ‘’All this time... we were only thinking about each other. And while we could have just talked about this and sort out the things between us... we were avoiding each other. But at the same time, we cared about each other the whole time...’’
‘’Hehhe, this is funny.’’ She giggled again, making Mayde smile even more.
‘’Hmhm... it is...’’ He agreed and felt a drop of tear rolling down on his face...
Finally, he was able to relax... and in the embrace of hers on top of that! He savored every minute while it lasted. When both of them managed to calm down, they finally let go of each other and Wubcake didn’t miss the chance to peck him on his lips.
Mayde smiled and followed after her and onto the couch. There, they snuggled close to each other, Wubcake planting her head onto Mayde’s chest. She listened to the sound of his heart and not lot later, she was sound asleep on top of him, his heartbeats serving as a shooting rhythm.
The blue pegasus smiled down onto her and mimicked her present activity...
Which was falling into blissful sleep...
… with her love...

Like I said, dear readers... nothing... special...
I started writing it at 1 am and finished the last things at the next day. A quick read-through and it was done under a few hours. I just got so obsessed with the idea of them, being together. (I literally screamed, when I got to know that they're together...)
I was originally planning on focusing on the feels seriously. Metaphors everywhere, beautiful description... but that was supposed to come after their snuggling. And sadly, that part is AFTER they come together and the story is just about how they came together, not the rest of it... might add those parts in a future chapter, which will be the clop one... if I ever get into the mood to write that chapter...
So, here it is. Now you guys know that i can write something cute, not just endless fights and sorrow...
