2.5.: Dream, Sweetly Dream

Previous Chapter

The night brings with it terrors I've never experienced before.

I 'wake up' in a straight, dark corridor. The hall in itself is barely wider than me; I can barely turn my head, much less about-face. The walls, straight and solid, offer no chance of escape. My only choice is to move forward. I do so, beginning a slow, wary trot down the hallway. The path veers left dramatically, then swings around to the right. What kind of architect designed this place?Nevertheless, I continue, a feeling of dread forming in my gut.

The passageway comes to an abrupt end, and due to the absence of light, I almost walk right off the edge. I poke my head out of the end of the hallway, looking around in the void beyond. Staring back at me are scores of pairs of eyes, all fixated upon my own. Each tilt of the head I make, they follow, watching my every move. A cold sweat develops on my face, and I feel the hairs on the back of my neck begin to stand. My heart starts to race as I slowly back away from the edge, but the eyes follow me, engulfing the entire girth of the hallway as they begin to chase me. I turn around to the best of my ability, scrambling away from the eyes giving chase.

After what feels like hours of galloping away in fear of the eyes, something huge and metal clamps onto the hall in front of me from the outside, tearing the path in front of me to shreds and knocking me back. The baleful eyes dissipate as they reach me, and I scramble to the torn edge of the corridor to see what exactly had ripped it in two. To my surprise, I see a gigantic pair of shackles, each cuff the size of Turnpike Tavern, floating in the void. The restraints then split, breaking into hundreds of shards and bits that all sharpen into makeshift daggers of various sizes and shapes. My face pales and my eyes widen as I witness each and every one of them turn to point directly at me. I take a quick look around to examine my surroundings.

There's no other way to go but forward, and to do so requires a hefty jump. Taking one last look up at the 'knives' looming in the distance, I back up into the passage and get a running start at the jump. Once I reach the ledge, I kick off with my hind legs, propelling myself into the air. At first it seems like I won't make it, but I grab onto the ledge and pull myself up to the other side. I stop to crane my neck at the other piece of the endless hallway, which is now floating away into nothingness. Mere moments afterward, large metal shards pierce the walls and cut the hallway to shreds behind me. It's time to start galloping again.

The shards puncture the walls all around me as I hastily scramble through the impossible hallway. Eyes sprout on the walls, tracking my movements and being destroyed as the shards of the gigantic shackles rip through them. Then I am stopped instantaneously, thrown to the wall by one of the shards that hits me square in the side. It goes straight through me, pinning me to the wall, the cold sting of the metal contrasting with the white-hot pain. Once again unable to scream, I silently weep as my energy fades from me, my hooves dissolving in front of my eyes. Slowly but surely, my body collapses, finishing with my head, as my vision blanks out.
