The trip

The sun was shining through the trees in Trottingham while birds were flying around the school campus. Jazz Rhythm was gazing at the clouds through the window, maths had to be the worst subject to have last lesson. The unicorns sitting in front of her were gabbling on about the school trip to Canterlot and it was making her head hurt, her bright pink hair was tussled from the heat and she was so tired that her black coat seemed more colourless than usual. Just five more minutes, she glanced over at the elderly, dark red unicorn who was the teacher.
"-and that is how you solve quadratic equations. Any questions? No? Good." he said as he finished his speech. The bell rang to indicate the end of a school day and everypony sighed in relief as they started to stand and pack up all their things.
"Don't forget to hand in your homework on Friday class!" he called as everyone started to leave. Jazz picked up her purple saddlebag and walked out into the corridor.
Outside the classroom was crowded and Jazz had to push her way through to her friends class, young pegasi were flying overhead and somepony kept hurling balls of paper towards her. It could have been a coincidence, but it wasn't that and she knew it; it was because she was probably the only blank flank left in her entire year group. Even the fillies and colts that attended the school already had their cutie marks, but she didn't dwell on it. There was more to life than that, she turned the corner and was greeted by a group of her closest friends standing just outside their classroom.
"Jazzy! Hey!" shouted a light blue unicorn who was waving madly to get her attention, this pony was called Rosie Bloom. She had a short lilac mane and a pretty, yet detailed cutie mark. A brush painting a cupcake with a rose on the top of it, Jazz was envious of Rosie Blooms cutie mark but she was envious of everyponys really. She walked over to the group of four ponies and they started towards the exit.
"Everyone in our class just now was talking about the Canterlot trip." scowled the white pegasus who was standing opposite Rosie Bloom, her name was Starry. She had a long blue mane and her cutie mark was a gold star with a big smile. Everyone keeps asking her what it meant but all they got was a cheeky grin and a tap on the nose. "Why don't they just come and rub it right in our faces! It wouldn't be so annoying to hear them constantly yapping about it!" Starry started to go off on a rant.
"Starry there's no point moaning, we don't even have enough money between all of us! And anyway the trip would be full of annoying rich kids." Rosie pointed out. Just as they were having this conversation, Jazz had walked over to a nearby wall. On the wall was a bright poster and some letters pinned below it which were surprisingly untouched. The poster said:

Anypony not attending the trip to Canterlot may attend another cheaper trip to Ponyville. Take a letter from below and have it returned by the end of the week. Details about the trip are in the letter.
Signed Mr Sun

The small group of friends smiled at each other as they each took an envelope from the wall and slipped it into their saddlebags. The next day they handed in the forms and the 25 bits needed to pay for the trip and that's all they talked about for the week as they prepared everything they needed for the voyage in a fortnights time.
