The Love Life of Rainbow Dash
Years ago, before I married Twilight Sparkle, I was just a young and stupid mare living in Equestria who didn’t have a care in the world. These days that is not the case. Over the last seven years of my life, things have changed drastically. All but two of my closest friends have passed away. Twilight Sparkle and Applejack are the only ones who are still with us. In fact, it was only two months ago that my closest friend, Fluttershy, passed away and went to pegasus heaven. She now rests at pony hill on the outskirts of Ponyville, along with the rest of my friends. Now I’m afraid that my other close friend, Applejack, now in her 70’s, does not have much time left either. Right now she is on her deathbed in the hospital being comforted by her sister. The rest of her family has long since passed away. I haven’t been by there in days because of my responsibilities as a princess. With all of the recent deaths in my life, I have begun to worry that I may forget all of these ponies which I have grown to love over my life. So after talking about it with my wife, Twilight, I decided to write this so I’ll never forget all of my friends who meant so much to me throughout my life.
CHAPTER ONE - FLUTTERSHY
Most ponies knew Fluttershy as the holder of the element of kindness, but I knew her on a more personal level. I met Fluttershy in Cloudsdale when I was just a young filly. Before I started hanging out with her, I would see her around the campus. She always seemed so shy and innocent, the exact opposite of me. I noticed that she would help out other ponies when she had a chance.
Around the second week of college we were having our flights timed. As usual, I had the best time on the board. But when it was Fluttershy’s turn, several stallions started calling her names when she made it up into the air. The name calling scared her so much that it caused her to crash. I couldn’t stand to watch anypony pick on her since she seemed so innocent. I did what I knew I had to do.
The next day I flew up to the two stallions and told them to knock all the horsing around off. They said something like, “What if we don’t want to? What are you going to do about it Rainbow Crash?”
I snapped.
Before they could say another word, I threw one of them into the lockers. The impact was immediately followed by a loud popping sound. He started crying, claiming that his wing had been dislocated. His friend was so scared that he flew off, leaving him behind. I told the stallion to leave Fluttershy alone and not tell anyone about what had just happened.
I never got in trouble, so he must have kept their word. At the very least they stopped bullying Fluttershy.
I started to talk to Fluttershy on a regular basis after that. She was more laid back than the ponies I usually hung around with. Soon we were seeing each other almost every day after school. I started to teach her how to fly better after class. It took a while, but by the end of the first month or so she could fly just as good as me. Maybe better if nopony else was watching. However, I really didn’t think of us as anything more than friends at this point.
As Fluttershy and I spent more time together, we grew closer. We started to have feelings for each other that would eventually lead to much more. We started to date, and soon enough she had moved into my dorm. I still remember the day she moved in. We both redecorated the whole place. Apparently, Fluttershy didn’t like all the posters of the WonderBolts. We must have spent all afternoon removing posters and then repainting the walls light pink instead of the grey they were before. It was different having somepony living with me after having been on my own. The bed was definitely cramped, it was almost impossible for both of us to stretch out our wings at the same time, but it was worth it though. I had the pony of my dreams sleeping next to me.
Almost every night we would talk and fantasize about our future after college together. We decided to start building a cloud house together in the sky above Ponyville. We couldn’t wait to get started, so we started building it while we were still in Flight School. We even had a wedding planned for the day after we graduated. After the wedding we could honeymoon in the nearly completed cloud house. Everypony in Cloudsdale was invited to the wedding. But then something went wrong a week before we were to be married. We had a fight that ended with us canceling the wedding and nearly ruining our friendship. I cannot remember what the fight was about, just that it was bad.
When I heard the terrible news about Fluttershy's death, it drove me into a deep depression, and I even attempted to end my own life. Fortunately, I was caught by the royal guards and they stopped me. The only thing that stopped me from trying to end my own life again was the thought of leaving Twilight alone forever, knowing how much I love her even though Fluttershy was my first love.
CHAPTER TWO – RARITY
A few years later, I was back in my home town of Ponyville, shopping for a dress for a party I was invited to by my dear friend Pinky Pie. After having no luck all morning long, I stopped by a small boutique and was greeted by white pony with a diamond cutie mark. I soon learned her name was Rarity. All I could think at that moment was what a hit I would be if I showed up with a pony like her by my side. The only problem was, I wasn’t sure if she was interested in stallions or mares.
Being young and stupid, I asked her if she was interested in going to Pinkie Pie’s party as my date. I was sure by the look she gave me that I was going to be slapped across the face. I was surprised when actually agreed to go with me. After all, I met her just about fifteen minutes ago. She asked me what I was going to wear, and I told her probably an old dress I had laying in my closet since I was having such a hard time finding a new one. She almost fainted and said that wouldn't work. She started throwing around fabric with her magic, trying to design two matching dresses right then and there. I didn’t want to get in her way, so I asked if I could pick her up around eight and she agreed. I left and was on my way to get cleaned up for the evening I was planning.
When I made it over there that evening, I knocked on her door. She came to the door in the most beautiful diamond studded dress I have ever seen. I was amazed that she created something so gorgeous so fast. She brought me over a dress and told me to put it on in the mares room down the hall. A few minutes later, I emerged in a near identical dress, custom tailored and accented with my personal rainbow colors.
During the long walk to the party, I asked her if she has gone out with any stallions or mares before. She said she has been out with several stallions, but this was her first time with a mare. It made me happy to think that I was so hot; I had convinced a straight mare to go out with me. The next thing I knew, we entered the house where the party was and were greeted by Pinky Pie. We both said hi to Pinkie at the same time, then simply stared at each other, unaware that we both knew her.
The next thing I knew, Fluttershy walks through the door. I hadn’t seen her in over a year and was shocked to say the least. I casually left Rarity’s side, hoping she wouldn’t catch me going to talk to another mare. I walked over to Fluttershy thinking about the good old times. I could tell she hadn’t been expecting to see me because she jumped when she saw I was there too. I lied to her, saying that I was there alone and we should hang out for a little bit. One thing led to another, and let’s just say Rarity caught Fluttershy and I doing something together.
All three of us were shocked and trying to figure what going on. Rarity recovered fairly quickly and started yelling, calling me some very choice words before running home, crying. I explained to Fluttershy what happened. She understood and was willing to forgive me, saying she was partially to blame. When I made it to Rarity’s house, I noticed there was someone else with her. It turns out it was Pinky Pie. She had left the party to console her crying friend.
I took plenty of time explaining to them what had happened, and that I was very sorry. I asked Rarity to forgive me. I knew she probably wouldn’t want to date me again, but I still wanted to be friends. She agreed under one condition, and that was meeting Fluttershy to make sure my story checked out. I agreed, and Pinkie Pie said she was going to come with us too. Neither of us objected, plus she could help stop any fighting if things came to that.
We all went over to Fluttershy’s house and talked everything out. Fluttershy's story backed mine up, and that’s how Fluttershy, Rarity, Pinkie Pie and I all got together for the first time. It took a long time for us to stand each other’s company, but sure enough we eventually did. As a matter of fact, we all became great friends.
CHAPTER THREE – APPLE TROT
After the last few events in my life, I was feeling that I should start looking for more of a stallion than a mare. That’s when I found the one, or at least I thought he was the one. He was a Pegasus carpenter with free flowing white fur, a dark grey, almost black mane, and two hammers as a cutie mark on his flank. Don’t even get me started about his looks. For over five months we dated and spent almost every day flying around Equestria and every night together talking about life, just like Fluttershy and I did. The last month we were together, he seemed to be leaving my house earlier than usual to go to work.
One night, he snuck out of my house and I decided to follow him. I ended up following him two towns over, to a different mare’s house. That’s when I caught him with another pony. I confronted him a couple days later about it, we got in an argument, he told me I was worthless and that I would never amount to anything, I got furious and threw him out of my house. I thought I had a good life planned out with him, but that didn’t turn out to be true.
I confronted him at his job about three weeks later, after I found out was pregnant. He said he was sure that he couldn’t be the father, but I assured him he was the only stallion I’ve ever been with and that he was the father. He just flew away halfway through our conversation and I didn’t hear anything about what happened to him for about two weeks. I don’t know what happened, but one day I read in the newspaper that he had committed suicide.
Apparently he had killed himself after hearing about a dramatic event that just happened in his life. I assumed it was because of my pregnancy. I was heartbroken, thinking that his death was entirely my fault and I should have never talked to him. Then maybe he would still be alive. During his funeral, I saw a surprising face. It was my dear friend Applejack, who lives on an apple farm on the outskirts of town. Turns out they were cousins.
We started talking. It turns out every time she saw him, he was with a different mare. Always causing a big scene. Later I had the chance to meet his parents. His parents told Applejack and I that he had attempted suicide several times before, and that he had a mental issue. They said it was bound to happen one day, and there wasn’t anything that could have really been done about it. I didn’t tell them about me being pregnant; I figured that would just make things complicated. The news about his mental issue managed to ease my mind a little, making me think it wasn’t completely my fault.
A couple months after the funeral, the little filly came. I was really young and didn’t know how to care for a filly. She was a Pegasus, just like her father and I, and her fur was a shade darker than mine. She had a dark grey mane which complimented her color very nicely. Not knowing how to care for a filly, I was able to convince my parents to raise her instead. I have always regretted this because I missed her growing up. Her first words, her first steps, everything. It was about twenty-five years later that I had to tell her what happened to her father and that I was her mother. It was when Twilight and I got married. I had to explain how she would live forever because she was now a Princess.
She moved away from Ponyville not long after both of my parents passed away in an accident. She went to live with Twilight’s brother and his wife since they were royalty and would live for a long time. Twice a year I get the privilege of seeing her, once during Christmas, and the other on her birthday. She has forgiven me for giving her to my parents, but it still hurts me to see her face, knowing she grew up in such a messy life, and I was the only one to blame.
CHAPTER FOUR – TWILIGHT SPARKLE
Twilight Sparkle was sent originally to Ponyville by Princess Celestia to make friends, where I met her and we, of course, became good friends. The first two years I knew her, I thought of her as a good friend and yes, an egghead. She almost always seemed to be reading a book. During a visit to the hospital after I crash landed one day, Twilight (or as I like to call her, Twi) dropped off a book about Daring Doo, a famous fantasy adventure. I never really read after I got out of high school, thinking only the non-cool ponies read. But boredom eventually got the better of me and I started to read it. I don’t know if it was the book or that if it was because Twi gave it to me, but I became addicted.
About once a week I would visit Twilight since she lived in the public library and checkout a book to read. I would always let her pick it out since she knew exactly what I liked to read, something action packed with an awesome main character. It was kind of hard for me to read some of the books she would give me, so she started helping me learn how to read better. One evening, during one of our reading sessions, things seemed to just come to me. Twi and I liked the same things, read the same stories, and always wanted to be together. I couldn’t go a minute without knowing where she was, and she was the same way with me. We were meant to be together.
I was planning to break this to Twi slowly, but when she walked into the room, I just blurted out I LOVE YOU at the top of my lungs. This definitely caught her off guard, seeing how she stopped dead in her tracks and dropped the stack of books she had been levitating. She asked me what I said, and I was honest with her. I told her that I loved her, everything about her. The way she laughed, the way her cheeks got red when she was mad or embarrassed, the way her cutie mark fit her so perfectly, just like her color. JUST EVERYTHING ABOUT HER!
After thinking about what I had just said, Twilight told me that she wasn’t sure if she loved me. That she needed some time to think about it. I dropped the book I had been reading and left as fast as I could. When I got home, I couldn’t stop crying. Not because of her not loving me back, but because I could have just ruined our entire friendship.
It was around midnight when I heard a knocking on my door. I told whoever it was to go away, trying to sound like I hadn’t been crying. I figured it was probably one of my other friends. Then I heard a voice from behind the door say that it was Twilight. I jumped up, eager to get to the door, but then I started to wonder. What if she was here to tell me our friendship is over and she doesn’t want to see me again? Or worse, that she was moving out of Ponyville because of me.
I slowed down almost to a standstill. Once I got to the door, I slowly open it. I invited Twi in, and she accepted. I started to say something, but she cut me off and just told me to listen. I thought that was going to be the end of our friendship. But then she said something I couldn’t believe. She said that she had been thinking of what I had said, and that I had left her confused. She said that I had never left a problem like that before, and that I had always been there for her before. It made her think of how much she needed me, and she realized that she did in fact love me. I told her that I loved her too and, and that I was sorry I left her alone. We both leaned in for a kiss. It was one of the best kisses I ever had in my life.
We secretly dated for some time because we didn’t know how everypony would take it. At least until Twi became a princess. After that, we knew that to remain together, we would have to tell everyone the news and have a marriage arranged. I didn’t know it at the time, but it turns out that gave me and my daughter eternal life, just like Twilight. This was of course a bonus. We have been happily married for twenty four years as of right now.
END NOTE
As you can see, my life has been an eventful one so far. With the recent passing of many of my friends, I can’t help but feel sad about what’s happened. I sometimes get depressed, but then I remember that all good things have to come to an end. I still have my life, my child, and of course my loving and forgiving wife, Twi. The one thing that keeps me going is thinking that if I had given my friends even one ounce of joy in their lives before they passed, then it was all worth it.
