Chapters It was dark, and it took Krystal Smith several minutes to realize that her eyes were even open at first. However she was stopped from sitting up by pain, specifically the pain in her shoulder. Krystal could feel as if bone ground against bone, which itself was odd. Her curse should have healed any such injury instantly.
“Argh! Dammit! Stupid mines and stupid mountain lions!” She screamed out causing echoes to resound around her. It was supposed to have been just a quick hike in the mountains. Krystal had been hunting for food, and enjoying the solitude, when she had attacked. A solitary mountain lion had chased her into a decrepit old mine she had never come across before. Just as she had turned to face her attacker however, the floor of the mine gave out, and now she found herself laying here. Wherever here was that is.
Gritting her teeth Krystal focused on the task at hand again. Whatever it was she was laying on wasn't all that comfortable aside from the pain in her shoulder, full of lumps and dull pointy things. Almost as bad as the smell that hung in the very stale air. It was thick and heavy with rot and decay, but at the same time was deathly silent after the echoes finally died. She heard nothing, not even the buzz of flies which was unusual considering carrion and insects usually went hand in hand.
As she struggled to sit up, Krystal felt something in her wound shift uncomfortably and the straps of her pack shift. Groping over with her uninjured arm she grasped at the offending object sticking out of her shoulder. It was long and smooth with small grooves running down the length of it. Tracing the grooves to the end Krystal was only half surprised at the distinctive knob at the end of it. Now she knew why the wound hadn't closed.
Apparently someone was missing a femur.
Gritting her teeth she yanked the bone out of her shoulder and managed to reduce the scream of pain to a loud groan. Krystal could feel the wound closing by itself as her curse kicking in as she tossed the bone aside and threw off the straps of her pack. Searching by touch she managed to find some glowsticks she kept in the side pockets for emergencies.
When the first one didn't snap or glow Krystal began to worry. If it had broken in the fall it meant she had been down here for several hours at least with a bone in her shoulder leaking blood. But Krystal didn't feel hungry or lightheaded which she took as a plus.
The second stick however gave a sharp snap and began to dimly glow. She gave it a few hard shakes to get it going before looking around her. Krystal wondered just what sort of hell she had fallen into. It wasn't all that surprising for her to see bones based on the smell. But what did surprise her was how many.
Although the light reached only a few feet all she could see were bones. Some were dressed in rags but most were nothing but bare skeletons. Between her legs a skull gave a morbid grin, and a quick dig found only more of it's kind along with more bones. Looking up the light didn't pierce to the ceiling of where she assumed she had fallen in from.
Is this a dumping ground for a serial killer? She wondered. She had seen mass graves before, but there was something different about this, though Krystal couldn't quite pin down what. With a shrug she turned to other matters.
Using the glowstick she gave quick rummage in the in the pack and brought her flashlight out. With a snap of the switch Krystal involuntarily gasped in some of the wretched air as she took in what seemed to be impossible.
It wasn't the fact that the cavern was massive. It wasn't even the chilling fact that much of it was filled wall to wall with bones and the occasional mummy. It was the realization that there was no way out. Even directly above her the light shone against nothing but smooth rock face. There wasn't even any sign of geological activity, it was as if a chunk of earth just went missing and was replaced with corpses.
Krystal had the sudden wild thought that she might be dead, that this could be some sort of hell or underworld. But as quickly as it entered she dismissed the thought. If she were dead surely she felt the residents would have been more lively company. After all, Krystal knew there would be plenty of people looking forward to reacquainting with her if there was an afterlife to be found here. Besides, she had already died once before, and this didn't feel like that had.
With a groan she managed to her feet before gazing up at the ceiling once more. Looking down she snatched up a skull and held it before her. “Sorry buddy, but I need a test subject.” She slyly said to the skull before drawing her arm back. With a explosion of bone fragments the skull only found solid rock above her, causing the woman to duck as the remains rained down.
“Well, so much for the idea of an illusion. So how did I get in here?” Krystal wondered aloud as she stroked her chin. “I must have fallen, because otherwise I wouldn't have had that bone in my shoulder. But at the same time I couldn't have fallen from up there...right?” She once again pondered the ceiling.
She decided that the only way to find out was to look around some more. With that thought she went to grab her pack and slung it back over her shoulders. All the while she made note that some of bones had torn into parts of the bag. She made a note that once she got out of here to check her gear, she would probably would have to ditch some equipment. But only if she could get out of here.
“Sorry guys, I don't like walking over graves but I’m not quite ready to settle in yet.” Krystal said offhandedly to the remains around her. Carefully she started to make her way to a random wall. It was slow going, the bones would shift or break under her weight forcing her to try to walk on clothed corpses as much as possible. Krystal was annoyed at the slow progress, but the alternative was to risk taking a spill and impaling herself on more bones. It wouldn't kill her, but she would waste blood she didn't need to.
As she walked she noticed that there was a theme to the clothing amongst the corpses. Some were dressed in modern clothing, but there was older clothing as well. At one point she came across what had to be a American world war one army uniform, just after that a mummy dressed in a second world war British navy uniform. But it seemed that however these bodies had come to be here, it had been occurring for possibly decades.
"But how do you kill so many people without attracting attention?" Krystal mused as she studied the corpses again. But for now she resolved to set aside the questions for now, whatever bizarre fate ended up with these people down here it wouldn't do her any good to dwell on it for now. First she had to escape from this mine and it's residents.
“That's assuming I’m even still in the mine.” Krystal muttered. As she continued her trek across the bonefield Krystal noticed the wall seemed to shift in front of her. What she had been taking for a single wall concealed the fact that more caverns lay beyond it. But as she rounded the corner she didn't find any more indication of an exit. All she could see was more death, and more strangeness.
Kryatal noticed the corpses were growing older, more and more the uniforms and outfits began to go backwards in time. Some even were styles she couldn't identify as belonging to any time or place. She continued to walk until finally she stood in the center of the bonefield again. If anything it was even bigger then the last one, and still filled to the brim with corpses. At this point Krystal was starting to rethink the theory of being in the underworld, when she spotted something glimmering in the far distance. She wondered about blindly charging after a glimmer, but shrugged her shoulders and decided to head towards it. If it wasn't the way out, at this point she wasn't losing anything.
After a few moments Krystal found herself standing in front of...something. It felt and looked like some sort of smooth and polished purple crystal, seemingly amethyst. But it covered a hole in the wall that was about twelve by twelve feet wide, though she suspected it was a bit larger since the bottom ducked below the line of bones.
“So, going out on a limb but I'm guessing through you is the way out big guy.” She said while patting the crystal affectionately. She considered digging though the bones for an ancient weapons or finding gunpowder to make her escape but decided better of it. If the owners were bones, chances were slim the weapons would hold out after a similar period of time and rot. Similar to the powder with it so old. No, she knew if she was going to get out she was just going to have to do it herself.
Exhausting her options she had one choice left. To use her curse. It was going to eat up her blood supply though, and that would make it all the more dire to make sure she escaped before she ran out. Taking a deep breath Krystal focused her mind on the power within and drew back her fist. With the hand encased in a sickly red glow she punched the crystal as hard as she could muster. All that happened however was that the small bones in her hand cracked and snapped loudly in the silence. Shaking out the hand Krystal let the bones mend before trying again, and this time was rewarded by several cracking sounds that weren't from overstressed bones.
This time with a final loud yell she punched and the crystal finally gave out. There was a small popping sound as two atmospheres joined and mixed. Krystal smiled as she finally was able to smell something besides rot again. Mindful of her hands and clothes being torn she clambered over the crystal and dropped down to a rocky ledge on the other side. If the caverns before were a macabre hell this new cavern was a beautiful heaven.
Everywhere she shined her flashlight gleaming crystals shone back brilliantly. Various colors and hues of crystal jutted from the floor and walls as if a frozen rainbow were caught within the cavern walls. Below her in the darkness she could hear a stream running, and looking over the edge surprisingly some of the crystals in the darkness below seemed to gently pulse and glow.
Carefully Krystal started to walk through the cavern and found a path that seemed to be ascending. After while she came across another chasm in the maddeningly twisting caverns. Looking around she spotted a crystal that seemed to have thrust out of one wall and into another, making seemingly perfect bridge. Though the crystal was slick, it proved no match for woman to cross. Following what seemed to be a path she rounded a corner and felt a breeze ruffle her long ponytail. Moving more quickly she followed the tunnels until in the distance she could see the light of sunlight.
Giving a small whoop of joy the woman began to head towards the light as quickly as she could. At this point there was no care of where the tunnel might came out at this point, just that lead out from underground. With shielded eyes she walked out into the sunlight and let her eyes adjust. At this point she felt that she really shouldn't have been surprised anymore. After having just woken up in a nightmare and crossed a dream, those were nothing with walking out onto an unfamiliar world.
The traveler stood on a cliff face overlooking what appeared to be a city. Except there shouldn't have been any city near the mine as far as Krystal could recall. But even stranger was that this didn't look like any modern city she knew of. The buildings all looked vaguely of Victorian design except for one, and that was the giant castle that stood at the far end and towering over the city proper. Though the castle itself seemed like a castle from a child's fantasy drawing with an impossible aesthetic and structure. Taken as a whole it looked similar to human structures from the past however, but there was still the bizarre alien quality to it.
Spotting movement in the city Krystal squinted in the sunlight. She could just make out small shapes moving amongst the buildings below, though she couldn't quite make out any details other then 'not human'. As Krystal watched she even saw a few suddenly take to the air.
“Ok then, fall down a mineshaft and come out in bizzaro land.” Krystal started to chuckle before realizing that really wasn't all the funny. “Fine then, what do I know? I fell down a mineshaft and woke up in an impossible to enter cavern. Leaving that lead me into a giant crystal cavern, which I've never heard of in the Rockies. Barring that, I certainly don't know of any castles in the Rockies or in America at all." She muttered to herself while retreating back into the cave. "So that leaves me...what, where, and possibly when . Which i'm not going to find out in a cave, so how do I want to do this?”
On one hand she knew she could wait till dark before attempting to approach the city. That would be when she would be safest. But if these people were anything like the humans Krystal knew she doubted it would go over well to have a strange creature out on the streets at night. On the other hand if she approached during the day she could start mass panic, be mostly helpless, and possibly get killed. She even contemplated assembling her crossbow from her pack or readying her hatchet. But found the hatchet missing from her side, and carrying an obvious weapon would probably make it hard to argue peaceful intentions. Not to mention that any one of the pieces of the crossbow could have been damaged, and might fail at a crucial moment.
“Geez, of all the things I expected to possibly die from aliens were never in the top ten. But if I want answers to what the hell is going on...” The woman groaned before standing. As Krystal left the cave again she spotted a possible path and began to make her decent. It probably wasn't the smartest move, but it would be the one she felt was most likely to cause the least trouble for anyone. Krystal just hoped that these people would share the sentiment and not shoot on sight. Or whatever it is they did.
After a rather slow climb Krystal found herself at the bottom of the cliff in a small copse of trees. Sitting over the main gate a hundred feet or so away lay a guardhouse that allowed passage into the city. So far it looked like no one had noticed her climb or presence judging by the lack of yells and the gate being wide open.
“Well here goes, either I get vaporized or make first contact. Nothing for it I guess.” The woman took a deep breath and left her hiding place. She slowly approached the guardhouse with her hands raised in surrender. But nobody seemed to respond as she stood outside the guardhouse for almost a minute before getting annoyed. “Yo! Anyone up there?!”
Puzzled at the lack of response Krystal walked over to the entrance which led further in. Picking up a small stone she tossed it through the entrance to test for traps. When it wasn't incinerated or blasted Krystal decided to take a chance and walked through. After making it halfway through the checkpoint without dying she decided it was safe.
“Well don't mind me, I'll just show myself around.” She called over her shoulder as she headed in. All the while pondering if this was normal security, or if the residents just weren't that worried about security at all. Instead of putting her at ease she decided to be even more cautious. but stick to staying in the open.
A short stretch later Krystal rounded a corner of a building got her first good look at the locals. Quickly she ducked back around the corner and peeked out. Without batting an eye she took in the sight before her, as if out of a children's cartoon. Everywhere she looked she could see multicolored coats and manes walking around. It appeared that some had wings but a majority had horns, yet oddly some had neither. Even more odd then then that fact that they seemed to be talking...was the fact she understood them.
“Ok I take it back, again. I died and am now in my own personal hell.” Krystal muttered out loud. "Filled with candy colored horses." It was then a horned pony managed to get sight of her. For a moment they locked eyes. Then, apparently a female, she let out a bloodcurdling scream and ran full tilt away from Krystal's hiding place.
The human winced as the female mare ran down the street screaming about monsters causing the rest to start whipping their heads about in a panic. Deciding to face them Krystal exited her hiding place. Immediately she regretted it as more screams filled the air and panicked voiced rang out.
Well so much for this going smoothly. Krystal thought ruefully as the streets were cleared in a flash. The sounds of doors and windows being slammed echoed for several seconds all around the human. Giving a sheepish smile Krystal decided just kept on walking down the street. Hoping that the best course of action at this point would be to just turn herself in at the castle that lay in the distance.
Barely two minutes later she finally saw the first response from the authorities to her presence. In the street before her in a flash appeared three horned ponies covered in golden plate armor. The three were armed with swords that floated in the air in front of them in a ready position. Up above on the rooftops she spotted more spear points and what looked like a few dozen arrows ready to be loosed from bows. From behind a few thumps sounded and with a glance over Krystal spotted a few more winged ponies glowering at her.
“Halt monster!” Barked out the center unicorn, the apparent leader. She had a white coat and pink mane. On her flanks Krystal barely could make out a gray feather brand. “In the name of Celestia you will come no further!”
Quickly the human raised her hands once more, though this didn't seem to appease them much. “I'm not a monster! Just a tourist that seemed to take an interplanetary wrong turn.” Krystal tried to smile in a friendly manner, but the mare just seemed to scowl more.
“How did you get into the city? What are your intentions!?” The mare barked out.
“Well I walked through the front door when no one answered. As for what I’m doing here, I'm trying to find out where I am and how to get home?” At this the guard looked to her companions in confusion before looking back at Krystal.
“You walked in? As in the gate was open and unattended?”
Quirking her eyebrow Krystal just gave a shrug, “Yeah, I stood outside it for a moment or two. There wasn't any response so I just walked in.”
The mare sighed before putting her face in her hoof. “Those two idiots, I knew they would somehow screw up, yet again. I just didn't think they would screw up this badly.”
One of the guards companions took a step forward, “Captain, how do you want to handle this?”
“I come in peace?” Krystal helpfully pointed out.
The mare studied the human for several seconds before she waved a hoof over her head. “Alright everyone, back to your posts. Thunder Prism and I will escort our guest to the castle.” As the other guards left the leader turned to her other companion. “Gemheart I want you to find my two idiot cousins and inform them that we will be having a very intense course on job responsibility.”
“So, can I put my hands down now?” Krystal asked as the second mare saluted and left.
The mare nodded. “Yes, for now. But don't try anything stupid. What is your name?”
“Krystal Smith, I'm sorry I don't recall getting your name.”
She snorted, “Because I never gave it, you can call me Captain for now. Take off your saddlebag and follow me.”
How delightfully charming. Krystal thought with a frown. But decided to not fault the mare to much with all things considered. Turning the captain gave a jerk of her head to lead her prisoner and started towards the castle. The stallion, Thunder Prism, fell in step in the rear while floating the human's pack beside him.
As they walked Krystal tried to get some info out of my hosts, “So where exactly am I? This is not like any place I am familiar with.”
The mare looked over her shoulder with a raised eyebrow, “I'd be surprised if the even the Princesses have ever seen the likes of you.” Turning her head forward the captain continued, “You are in Equestria, and currently you are in our capitol. Canterlot.”
Krystal pondered that first bit, “So you are saying you have never seen the likes of me? Never heard of a human?”
“Is that what you call yourself?” The mare snorted, “Never seen the likes or heard of you, 'human'. But lucky for you our newest princess absolutely loves useless trivia, so if anyone would know of your kind it would be her.”
Newest princess, and do I detect some resentment? Krystal wondered. “So who are these 'princesses' you are taking me to? When you say newest, just how many are we talking about?”
“There are three princesses. Princess Celestia, ruler of Equestria along with her sister Princess Luna.” With a pause the mare then continued, “Then there is Princess Twilight Sparkle, the newest princess.” The captain couldn't quite hide the disdain leaking into her voice.
I'm sensing a theme, and definitely some resentment. Wonder why? But a strange thought crossed her mind. Princesses ruling a land, what about the King and Queen? She voiced as much to the captain.
“What King and Queen?” Was all the answer she got. The mare seemingly as confused about the question as Krystal was.
“Well, where did the Princesses come from? They had to have come from somewhere, right?” The human insisted.
“Krystal Smith,” The captain began with authority. “My job is to protect the city and it's people. That does not involve playing twenty questions with a potential threat. You will be silent until we reach the castle.” The guard's voice brooked no objection.
Well that was sudden. I wonder why? But decided to not test the guard's patience, and instead study the city as they passed.
Canterlot up close was as strange as it was from a distance. Krystal couldn't decide what time period it most reminded her of. While it had aesthetics from the early eighteen hundreds it also seemed to have much more modern touches as well. The streetlamps looked of vintage design, but what appeared to be bulbs could be seen inside the glass tops. As they passed one shop she swore she could see an arcade the like of which she remembered in the eighties. A clothing shop contained designs meant for equines, but definitely wouldn't look out of place in modern times. With the guard's armor and weapons seemingly roman inspired. in the end it all just looked like someone had taken a history book and threw it in a blender before building a city.
It was then Krystal also noticed something else. The city was clean. The streets, the patches of grass, even hedges were neat and orderly. But it was with such perfect precision that it stood out and gave off a surreal atmosphere. Even more as she walked she could feel something even deeper underneath it all.
Putting it all aside, again, for future consideration Krystal realized they were approaching their destination. The lead guard signaled for the gate to be opened before leading the human into a large open courtyard. Waiting for them was a pony dressed oddly like a french maid. Krystal tried hard to not laugh, and earned a look from the captain for failing to hide a chortle.
“Captain Snow Bloom, the princesses are waiting for you in the main hall. Please follow me.” Snow Bloom simply nodded and the three followed the maid into a grandiose hallway. Krystal stared at the large and beautiful stain glass windows that lined the hallway and were almost as large as the hall was tall.
In each of them she saw a new type of pony, a white pony with both horn and wings. Along with this prominent figure she also saw a dark blue pony of the same type, along with a few windows depicting a purple pony. Obviously these had to be ponies of great importance.
The small group came upon a massive set of doors at the end of the hallway, and two guards opened the doors allowing them into the main hall. At least three stories high the room was decorated in white marble with gold inlays. Stained glass windows filtered brilliant colored sunbeams onto the gleaming floors. At the end of the chamber on two raised daises sat three thrones. On the two lower thrones sat the blue and purple ponies she saw in the windows before. Upon the raised throne above the other princesses sat the white pony.
That is a pony? She looks more like a horse! Thought Krystal as she was lead forward. As the group approached she studied the expressions as best as she could. The purple one showed curiosity with her tilted head, as if trying to study the human. The blue one showed interest, though it was almost hidden. But the white one was neutral and as unreadable as the white marble of the room.
The guards stopped in front of the thrones and took positions flanking the human. The maid approached the princesses and bowed. “Presenting the prisoner, Princess Celestia.”
The white pony nodded, “Thank you Winter Sky, that will be all.” Bowing again the maid walked away.
“So I'm a prisoner though I have done no harm?” Krystal called out in defiance. Princess Celestia merely arched an eyebrow to the outburst.
“You invaded my city and terrorized my ponies, is that not harm enough?” She responded neutrally.
With a shake of her head Krystal responded. “No, what I did was walk through an open door and down the street. I have harmed no one and taken no action of resistance.” Beside her Krystal could sense a sudden nervousness coming from Captain Snow Bloom.
“I see,” Celestia said while giving a meaningful look to the captain. “Perhaps we should start at the beginning. Who are you, and what brings you to Equestria?”
“Well my name is Krystal Smith, and I'm a human.” Over the next few moments Krystal went over how she had come to Equestria. How she had been camping in the mountains when she had been attacked by a mountain lion and fled to a nearby mine. But had fallen down a mineshaft and lost consciousness. She decided to keep the macabre chambers in the nearby mountain to herself. "...and after falling down the shaft, next thing I know I was in those crystal caves." Krystal explained as she wrapped up her story.
Celestia leveled a stern gaze upon the woman. “I see, and what are your intentions now Krystal Smith?”'
“Easy, I intend to try to find a way home. Your Captain suggested that perhaps one of you might be able to help in that. The 'newest princess', which I’m going to guess is you?” Krystal said while looking at the purple princess.
Celestia turned and also looked upon Twilight, who had started to blush self consciously. “I believe that may be correct. Twilight Sparkle might be your best chance to return home, as nopony else in Equestria is more studied or fluent in the ways of magic.”
Turning back to the Krystal, Celestia again studied her. “That just leaves the matter of what to do with you in the meantime. I am sorry, but having you walk freely might be to upsetting to my subjects. I think the safest course of action for all involved may be to keep you confined.”
Krystal bristled at this decree. While she didn't want to hurt or upset her hosts, being locked up would present a very real problem in the twenty-four hours. Judging by the shocked looks, the other two princesses also had a problem with that decree. She was about to speak when the last princess, who she presumed was Princess Luna spoke up first.
“Sister, I do not think that would be necessary. After all she has shown no ill will towards us or our subjects. Has she?” Luna pointed out.
“But she is not like anything they have seen.” Celestia objected. “They won't understand her, and might even panic.”
“But Princess Celestia,” Twilight interrupted hesitantly while looking oddly at her mentor. “Wouldn't this be similar to how my friends and I learned to not judge on appearance? Zecora has turned out to be a very good friend to the ponies in Ponyville after all.”
Luna nodded, “Indeed sister. If it was a lesson worthy of the magic of friendship, perhaps it would be best to ensure the lesson is taught to all.” Celestia looked at a loss of words at the other princesses objections for a moment before smiling.
“You are right Luna. Perhaps I am being to hasty.” Continuing to smile she turned back to Krystal. “I will however ask that for the time being you remain in the castle though. Just until we can sort things out in better detail of course.” Though her voice was pleasant, the human caught an undercurrent of just how displeased the ruler was.
“Of course, your highness.” Krystal said with a curt bow or her head. “I mean you nor your people any harm, you have my word.” At least no permanent harm. She added silently.
Celestia stood up from her throne while never losing her smile. “Well then. We all have had a rather unusual day, maybe we should continue over dinner?”
“Yes, that sounds like a wonderful idea. Please join us Krystal Smith.” Luna added. Celestia whipped her head around to face her sister and Krystal spotted for the briefest of instants a look of fury pass over the ruler's face.
Ok, something is obviously going on here. She is trying so hard to hide something, that she might as well be holding a neon sign! Krystal thought ruefully. She noticed that Twilight was looking at Celestia uncertainly and realized that she had spotted it as well.
Celestia however had replaced the mask of serenity she briefly had broken and silently lead the way out of the hall. Hesitantly their guest followed suit. A moment later they entered a large hall with a table that almost took up the entirety of the space. On one end lay various foods, enough to feed a rather large family. Various pies, salads, fruits, and vegetables were laid out and prepared in various methods. From steaming cherry pies to roasted zucchini, it was a vegetarian’s dream feast come true.
It also was a table missing chairs. Looking lost the human realized that the ponies simply sat, literally, at the table. Shrugging her shoulders she went to join them and sat cross-legged at the table. It was a little higher then comfortable but manageable. She then found herself sitting beside Luna with Celestia at the head of the table and Twilight on the other side.
Quiet reigned in the hall at that point. Even with a maid entering with a plate and glass for the unexpected addition nothing was said but a quick “thank you”. The four diners began and ate in silence. Though the food was excellent, the atmosphere made it hard for Krystal to enjoy the meal. Getting anxious she decided to break the ice.
“Thank you for the meal. I'm afraid all the time I spent in the mountains left me hungry enough to eat a horse!” Krystal realized approximately half a second later exactly what she had just said.
“Your kind eats horses?!” Twilight exclaimed with horror on her face. Celestia also looked repulsed, though her sister simply looked amused.
“No! I mean, I guess some do....” Krystal trailed off at the mounting horror evident on their faces. “I'ts just an expression!”
“Of you wanting to eat one of my subjects!” Celestia exclaimed.
Krystal began to sweat, Way to stick your foot in it girl!
“I think what she means to say is that there is something more to the expression then what first appears.” Luna said calmly. “Isn't that right, Krystal Smith?”
Krystal looked at the blue pony beside her like she were an angel sent from on high. “Yes!” She exclaimed before calming herself. “Yes. Sorry it's not nearly as bad as it sounds.”
“Please, do tell.” Celestia said evenly as she narrowed her eyes. Krystal gulped as she continued.
“W-well equines in general are very beloved in my world. In fact for the longest time having an equine companion was a mark of being established.” Krystal supplied, “In fact that is why the phrase is what it is. To be 'hungry enough to eat a horse' is to be so hungry you would be willing to sacrifice a valued companion.”
Twilight still looked a little taken aback, but mollified. Celestia however continued to narrow her eyes at the human. “Your world sounds very...interesting.”
Krystal shrugged, “Well I think yours has mine beat. I've fallen down a mineshaft, woke in a
world that isn't mine, and was threatened by magical talking ponies. The sad part is, this is only the second strangest day of my life.”
“You're right, that is strange.” Twilight tilted her head, “What was the first?”
Krystal smiled tiredly, “The day that I was born.” She seemed to stare off into the didstace for a moment before she stood up. “Well I think I've provided enough disaster for one meal. If you pardon, I’ll take my cell or wherever you would have me stay.”
“Are you sure?” Luna protested, “You have not eaten much.”
Krystal smiled again, “Thank you for your kindness princess, but yes.” Luna smiled and called for a maid, instructing her to lead her guest to a guest room in the castle. Once they had left she turned back to face the table and caught the disapproving look Celestia was giving her.
“Is something wrong, Celestia?” Luna asked politely.
“I think you are being to friendly with this, 'human'.” Celestia said curtly before returning to her meal.
Luna looked quizzically at her sister, “And I think you are being uncharacteristically rude and unwelcoming. You were not this rude even onto the ambassador of Lupania.” Turning to Twilight she tilted her head, “What of you Twilight Sparkle? What do you think of our guest.”
Twilight simply blushed and ducked her head, “I-I don't know what to think Luna. She is odd, but she is an alien so that makes sense.” She then smiled, “But seeing as she is an alien I can't wait to study her! Think of the possibilities and what she could teach us!” The scientist in the princess was bursting at the joy of being able to discover new things.
“I don't want you having anything to do with her besides sending her back Twilight.” Celestia quietly ordered. Immediately Twilight froze and looked at her mentor. The princess of the sun was staring down at the table with narrowed eyes.
“P-princess Celestia?” hesitantly Twilight called.
“There is something very dark and wrong with that...human .” Celestia looked up and locked eyes with her sister.
“Would thou order me, my sister?” Luna returned her gaze in full force, slipping into her Canterlot voice.
“Do I need to?” Celestia challenged. Twilight looked uncertainly between the sisters at a loss of what to say or do. After a long moment the moon princess stood from the table.
“Suddenly, mine palate is satisfied. Good evening to thou both.” With that only teacher and student were left at the table. After a long moment Celestia resumed her food, and Twilight followed suite. No words were exchanged for the rest of the dinner.

Krystal entered the guest room and suppressed a groan. Everywhere was pink, from the drapes to the sheets of the canopy bed. Even the throw rug in the center of the room was a vibrant pink. With a shrug she entered before hearing a knock at her door. Answering it she found another maid that was floating Krystal's pack beside her.
“Sorry ma'am, Luna instructed me to return this to you.” The softly glowing pack moved before her to the human's hands.
“Thank you, and please thank the princess for me as well.” Krystal said before gently closing the door. Setting the pack down she began to rummage through it. Quickly she pulled out the pieces of her crossbow and began to assemble it. Although the crossbow appeared to be fine, the quiver she drew was not. Four of the bots were cracked or splintered, leaving only sixteen bolts for use. Leaving the crossbow un-stringed she hid the weapon and ammo under her bed, using some duck tape from her pack to secure them out of sight.
Returning to her pack she went through it again. Setting aside her swiss army knife she groaned at what she saw. Bone shards had ripped apart her sleeping bag and tent, and more then one of her pots was bent out of shape. All in all only a day's worth of food, her weapon, and her knife had survived the journey intact. Even most of her clothes had holes and tears in them.
With a sudden thought she felt along the side of the pack before tearing at the hidden seam. From within the pouch she drew forth a laminated photo that was browned with age. In it was a family that stared back at her passively as Krystal held it close.
“Well at least you all survived.” She whispered. Spotting a vanity she opened a drawer and carefully put the photo inside. Gently she closed it again and gave a reverent pat before beginning to disrobe. Turning out the lights she climbed into the bed and looked out over the setting sun.
“In the matter of a day, my world is turned upside down.” She said to herself. Laying her head back she gazed up, “I don't even know if I can survive in this land for long. Guess nothing for it but to wait and see. I'll find out in the next twenty-four hours, won't I?” With that, Krystal Smith began her first night in Equestria.
But as the human slept the air above her shimmered as two steel gray eyes opened in midair. Gazing around the finally focused on Krystal. They narrowed for a few seconds as a voice whispered as if carried on a nonexistent breeze.
“Soon. Very soon.”
With that, the eyes closed and the air was still. As if nothing had occurred at all.
She was back on the farm looking out over the fields her family owned. The old barn that still needed a fresh coat of paint. The ranch house that now had broken windows and a door swaying in the wind. Even the tractor, though now unusable with it's side smashed in. It was all just like the last time she saw it.
Her eyes were drawn back to the barn. She knew what lay within, what she had brought upon them all. Just as she knew who it was who stood behind her. The identity of the monster that took liberties to run a tongue up her neck.
“Shall we go my love?” The deep bass of the man's voice only made the mocking tone sting more.
“You lied. You son of a bitch you lied !” She screamed as she turned around only to feel the man backhand her. They both knew he could have taken her head clean off if he had willed it. As it was she fell to her side in a daze.
“I never lie. You bargained them being let go in return for yourself. I kept up my end and let them go, pity you never specified condition or manner though.” Clutching her head he pulled her painfully to her feet. “Now you are mine, my bride !” She screamed as his mouth opened impossibly wide before the monster lunged for her.

With a gasp Krystal opened her eyes and looked around her in a blind panic. Slowly she realized where she was and what had transpired the day before. Shaking she sat up and hugged her knees to her chest. Gently she rocked herself on the bed as she tried to forget what the dream had made her remember.
“He's dead. The son of a bitch is dead. That wasn't how it happened, remember? You watched him burn yourself. He's dead. He's dead.” She repeated the mantra for another moment as she got herself back together. Slowly she moved to where she sat on the side of the bed and continued to gasp in short breaths. Focusing she controlled her breathing and slowed to long deep breaths as she let the fear and pain from the dream flow away. "Stupid, one little comment over dinner and you start acting like this?" She whispered as she angrily berated herself.
Taking a final deep breath the woman noticed that it was still dark, and that the moon shone down through the window. Dressing herself in her clothes from the day before she opened a window into the cool night air. Below her the ground beckoned from a fifty foot fall, with the outer wall a short way across a courtyard. Not a guard was in sight of her window. With a smile Krystal jumped out her window.
She landed on her feet but the impact was hard, and all along her body she felt bone splinter before almost instantly mending itself. Krystal knew she was being reckless with her power, that the very real possibility was that she would run out and be dead within twenty-four hours. But if that were the case, she might as well enjoy herself and explore. It was better then waiting around for death.
Keeping to the shadows she silently swept along the castle grounds. The yards were silent, and aside from the few guards on the walls the human came across nobody. Creeping along a hedge she peeked around the corner to spot Princess Luna in the middle of a courtyard. Surrounded by a blue glow a large sword swept through the air in intricate patterns that would be impossible if held by a human.
The human took a few moments to admire the dance of Luna's blade in the moonlight. After a bit she decided to approach the princess, and Krystal stood in the shadows before walking boldly into the moonlight. Luna noticed her spectator and the sword came to a rest leaning on her side. “Good evening Princess. A bit late for sword practice isn't it?” the woman called out cheerfully.
Luna tilted her head to the side, a mirthful smile on her face as she replied. “I would ask of you the same, Krystal Smith. Is it not late for a stroll?”
“Oh, just a bit of trouble sleeping. Probably with being in a new land and all.” Krystal half admitted. “So I decided to aquatint with the castle.”
“In the middle of the night?”
The human simply shrugged, “What can I say? I'm a night person. How about you?”
A smile crept across the princess's face, “Well I am the princess of the night, in charge of the moon and star lit skies.”
“In charge of?” Krystal raised her eyebrow, “What do you mean you are in charge of the moon? Like an astronomer or something?”
Luna looked shocked at the question, “Don't you have someone in charge of the moon in your world? Who keeps the moon ever present in the night sky?”
With a shake of her head the woman pondered that, the ponies could control celestial objects? Suddenly she was glad she hadn't tried to surprise these ponies or had to escape from a cell. If they could teleport, and control celestial objects she doubted even her own power could match theirs, and wasn't keen to test the theory.
“Well no, no one controls the moon in my world.” Krystal admitted, “It doesn't work like that. In fact most humans would be surprised at the possibility of magic at all let alone the thought of anyone controlling the moon in my world.”
“But not you?” Luna tilted her head inquisitively.
“Not really,” Krystal admitted. “I have had experience with magic before. It's pretty weak, but it's still there if you know where to look in my world.”
“I see,” Luna said sadly as she looked upwards to the moon. “In a way I envy your world then Krystal Smith.”
The woman just smiled, “Please Princess, Krystal alone would be fine. But if you don't mind me asking, why would you envy not being in charge of the moon?”
“How would you yourself feel about being in charge of your own cell of a thousand years?” Luna replied without shifting her gaze.
“That...well I can't honestly say Princess.” Krystal admitted as she too looked upward. Then a thought hit her, “Wait how was the moon your cell? What do you mean a thousand years?”
Luna sighed, “I was told that I once grew so jealous of my sister that I began a war in Equestria. At the final hour of my victory, Celestia had to use the Elements of Harmony to stop me. With these same elements she banished me to the moon for a thousand years.”
Krystal simply raised an eyebrow, “Well if you don't mind me saying, you and Celestia look good for a thousand years your highness.” Luna blushed at the compliment. “Hold on, you said 'I was told'. What does that mean, and how did you live a thousand years?”
Luna look flustered before turning her head, “I-I don't remember much of back then or my time on the moon, so my sister had to help me with that.” The princess's voice grew soft, but insistent. “As for your second question, I can not answer that. Please understand.” Her tone was soft, but showed no hesitation on keeping her secret.
What does that mean, she can't answer? There is that feeling again, like something is running deeper then what you can see. Question is, do I want to get involved?
“Very well Princess. I won't pry into your life, and leave you to your practice.” Krystal said politely as she made to leave. While she turned away she heard a hesitant voice from behind her.
“A-actually, may we talk again? I enjoyed the short talk, or having anypony to talk to really. Not many ponies are awake in the castle besides the guards.” Luna said as she blushed heavily. As Krystal looked back she could tell that having to ask was the last thing the princess wanted to do, but there was something else painfully evident to the human.
Lonely. She is a princess of the night and she is lonely. And I really doubt that having been an exile has left people lining up to be near her.
She realized that she needed to know one thing first, “Why?” Luna looked confused at the question. Tilting her head she looked uncertainly at the human.
“Why what, Krystal?”
“Why be friends with me? Why did you speak up for me against your sister?” The human explained. To this the princess began to paw at the dirt with a hoof while blushing, and after a moment she seemed to muster up the courage to look up again.
“You feel....comfortable. Like I have known you far longer then I actually have. Like we share something between us, some...affinity.” She tried to awkwardly explain.
Krystal rubbed at her chin with a hand, “You mean like both of us enjoying the night air?” She said with a grin.
“Yes,” Luna nodded. “I know it sounds strange, but I want to be...friends?” Though she tried to hide it, Luna couldn't keep the hopeful tone out of her voice, and Krystal thought on it. Maybe it was a risk to have connections with people, or in this case ponies, again. But she was in a strange world, with stranger rules. Perhaps having a princess's friendship might pay off.
Realizing that the princess was patiently waiting for an answer she smiled, “Sure. Anytime you wish to talk Princess my door is always open to you.” She smiled wider at the princess both simultaneously beaming and at the same time trying to hide it. Luna gave up and simply smiled her thanks. With a jaunty wave Krystal turned and walked out of the courtyard and headed back to her room.

At mid morning Krystal found herself reporting to the laboratory of Twilight Sparkle, apparently the resident mad scientist judging by the equipment. It was located in a tower just off the main castle, and mainly depended on the sun for lighting. All around her equipment buzzed as the princess zipped around and sometimes teleported mixing beakers and tweaking equipment dials and switches.
“Thank you so much Krystal Smith for letting me be the one to work on you, well, with you Krystal Smith.” Twilight said with a bright smile as she worked.
The human however was looking a little more unsure at the moment, “Well, uh, no problem Twilight. One request though, just call me Krystal.”
Twilight nodded as she levitated a notepad and quill over to her, “Very well Krystal, why don't we start with some questions?” As she trotted over Twilight began to squee, “Oh, this is going to be so exciting!”
“Right. Exciting.” Krystal deadpanned before shaking her head. While she understood a little enthusiasm, she felt a little uncomfortable at the princess's....enthusiasm. “Well ok, what do you want to know?”
“Well lets start with the basics. Are you a male or female of your species? I know you sound female, but I don't want to assume anything from this point.” Twilight stated with authority.
“Gonna go with 'female' Princess.” The human replied with an amused smile.
This went on for several moments with questions related to the human's physiological nature. Questions about what humans could eat, how many hours they slept, how humans differed from one another. After about an hour of this Twilight broke out a stethoscope and blood pressure cuff. Bringing the stethoscope up to Krystal's chest the princess appeared to become more and more frustrated.
“Krystal, I can't seem to find your heartbeat. Is that normal?” The science pony asked while looking up at her patient.
“No, are you sure you are listening in the right place?” Krystal asked while trying to appear as confused as Twilight. As the princess returned the stethoscope to the human's chest, Krystal closed her eyes and began to concentrate.
“There it is.” Twilight said in relief, “It sounds a little different then I expected though.”
After a moment the pony seemed to shrug, “Hmm, but that makes sense since you aren't from this world. But if we can't establish a common baseline this will be harder then I thought.” Twilight mused. Walking over to a nearby table she began to fiddle with a machine. “So what is it like?”
“What is what like?”
Twilight looked over her shoulder with a smile, “Your world I mean. What is it like?”
Krystal began to rub her chin, “I don't know. It's kinda hard to pick a random place to start. Did you have something more specific?
Twilight appeared to ponder that for a second, “How do you get around? You said humans can't run as fast as equines in your world. Can your people use magic?”
The human laughed, “Luna asked something similar last night. No we don't use magic, in fact magic is all but nonexistent in my world. We use primarily technology, and the majority of humans use technological devices called 'cars' to get around.”
“What about flying?”
“Technology too,” the human supplied. “We use devices of various types to fly and carry stuff in the air. Some of which can carry us into space, and the farthest we've gotten so far is setting foot on the moon. Though some hope to visit other planets in person someday.”
Twilight moved from once device to another, “This 'technology' sounds a lot like magic then.” She noted. Krystal just shrugged behind her.
“Maybe it is to an extent. I'm amazed at how much things have changed since I was young.” The woman had a wistful look spread across her face. “ What once was thought to be impossible is not only possible but commonplace these days.”
“Amazing. Your people must have a very wise ruler to be able to lead so many.”
Krystal shook her head. “We don't have one ruler, we have many nations with many types of rule.”
The princess stopped what she was doing and turned to the human with a puzzled look. “You mean your species doesn't have a single leader? How does that even work?”
Krystal just chuckled, “Oddly? Pretty well all things considered. Many of us have lost sleep trying to figure out how exactly, and that is far more philosophical then I ever cared to be. Despite the odd war, for the most part we get along and move forward.”
Krystal noted a sudden shift in the princess's demeanor. The smile had slipped from Twilight's face and she was backing up shaking her head. “Twilight? Princess?” Cautiously the woman called out.
“War? A broken species?” Twilight started to say as if in a daze while shaking her head. Krystal approached the princess carefully, eying the increasingly erratic movements of the pony.
“Twilight? Twilight Sparkle look at me, are you ok?” She tried to gently reassure the now swaying pony. The overpowering feeling that something very wrong was happening shaking the human to the core; and it took every ounce of Krystal's will to keep moving forward despite what her instincts were telling her.
But it wasn't until she had reached the pony and placed a hand on her mane that the swaying stopped. For a single instant Krystal thought that whatever was happening had passed. At least until the princess snapped her head up and her horn began to flare. The woman only had a chance to open her eyes wide in surprise to the princess's own glowing eyes.
“Get away from me! ” Twilight screamed out as her horn flared. As if being hit by a truck the human was propelled into and through a nearby machine. Sparks flew and metal twisted as her body flipped through the air before crashing painfully against the wall.
“The...hell was that for?!” Krystal ground out as her vision swam back into focus. Shaking the cobwebs from her head immediately the human cursed her carelessness as she eyed her now broken body. Grimacing in pain she silently cursed the sun before trying to employ mental blocks. With limited success she began to feel the pain dull enough to move. But she knew she had only moments to get her body healed, and to do that meant escaping the sun.
As Krystal saw the blood flow from her she spotted a nearby door. She felt nothing from her legs, and her right arm held a compound fracture. Desperately she tried to inch forward to the door with her left hand with her right giving only minimal assistance. Looking over at the princess as she dragged her body she noted that Twilight hadn't moved or said anything since her outburst; appearing only to stare into space with her mouth hanging open as if in silent scream.
Slowly she saw the door come ever closer as her vision began to fade. Fumbling with the door she finally managed to get it open and sighed with relief. Inside only a few cleaning supplies stood between her and life. Desperately she flung items about to make room for herself as she scrabbled into the closet. With one last look towards the still motionless Twilight, Krystal closed the door.
Immediately as she was plunged into darkness the bleeding and pain stopped. She could feel the tickling of internal organs as they shifted back into the proper places. Bones creaked and popped as they mended and reset themselves. The woman shivered at the wet sensation of her own blood being drawn back into her body. Finally after a long moment she was able to stand and exit the closet, feeling none the worse for wear aside from ripped clothing. The clothes themselves showing not even blood to mark the perilous state she had been in mere moments ago. But inside she felt the hunger burn at her, letting her know just how much power she had used to heal herself.
Approaching the still unmoving Twilight, Krystal decided to take a chance with the only two powers she could call on in sunlight. If she were to mess up, she would be dead very shortly as she was to weak to heal herself like that again. Reaching out she again touched the mane of the princess. As Twilight once again locked into the gaze of Krystal's green eyes, the woman uttered one word laced with power.
“Sleep ”
It was a long and tense moment as it appeared Twilight might fight the command. But finally her horn flared one last time before the pony succumbed to the suggestion and slumped forward. Placing her hand on the princess's mane firmly Krystal shook her head sadly.
“I don't know what the hell got into you, but I'm going to find out. I also need to replenish my resources, so lets kill two birds with one stone shall we?” With that the creature focused, and under purple pony's mane and fur blood began to well up through the skin. Like a sponge it was absorbed into the creatures hand. She made sure not to draw enough to kill, but enough to take the bite off her hunger.
“Good news, I can feed on your people. Don't have to worry about dying anytime soon, thank goodness.” Krystal said as she absorbed the last of the blood, and left no trace of the transfer on mane or fur. Sitting back she focused on the blood, digesting it and analyzing it for imperfections. She had tasted the blood of many beings both human and not, but no disease or ailment tasted anything like what she now had. This blood was laced with something the woman just couldn't identify.
According to her blood, nothing is physically wrong with Twilight.
Something is wrong here, something is very wrong. A cavern full of dead humans. A ruler that doesn't want me walking free. A princess who can't explain how she lived a thousand years. Now another princess who goes psycho at the mention of war? What is going on here, Is there a connection? I need more...something. I can't just jump to conclusions, not yet at least. But I might know who to ask tonight for a few more answers. One thing is for sure at this point, I need to watch what I say and do around these ponies. If I get hurt like that again in the sun...
Kneeling down Krystal placed a hand on the princess's head once again, and laced her voice with power. With a bid the woman told Twilight to wake and trust her in all things. After a few more commands the purple pony opening her eyes with a drawn out groan. Dazed Twilight looked around before focusing on the destroyed machine. With a gasp she was on her hooves and alert.
“Oh my gosh, oh my gosh!” She repeated like a quick mantra as she looked at Krystal with worry and confusion. “What happened? What happened to me? To you?”
She can't remember? Is that a good thing or bad?
Twilight shook her head, “Only that you said something about your people. Then nothing.” She started to shake her head, and Krystal began to fear a repeat incident.
“Twilight stop!” Krystal commanded, “Don't hurt yourself trying to remember. You asked about how my people got along and I said just fine. Much like your own people.” She supplied while lacing her voice with more power. Immediately Twilight appeared to relax at this and whatever had come over her seemingly pass.
“I...your right, you did say that. Didn't you?” She said with certainty. Krystal just looked upon the princess with apprehension.
“Right. Just as I said. The machine was due to me just being clumsy, and you apparently fainted for some reason. Maybe we should continue after you get checked out? Can't be to careful you know.” Krystal quickly supplied. “Well maybe we should continue this another day?”
“Yes, that might be for the best.” Twilight agreed. Krystal smiled and made for the door as Twilight opened her eyes wide. “Wait! I wanted to get a-” She started to say as the door clicked shut, “Blood sample.” She sighed.
Walking over to the smashed machine she looked at it closely. It certainly didn't look like it had just had someone run into it, but as Twilight questioned the oddity her head started to hurt. Of course Krystal had just run into it, right? After all the human had no reason to lie, did she?
Shaking her head to clear the pain she spotted something glistening on an exposed edge of metal. Looking closer she realized what it was, and floated over a cotton swab with glass slide. Carefully she transferred the blood to the slide with a smile. This wasn't as much as she had hoped for, but it should be enough for some basic tests.

“Alright everypony. Good work tonight! We should be ready for the performance tomorrow night at this rate.” Fortissimo called out from his conductor's stand, “Be sure to meet back here at the hall tomorrow morning at the same time to continue practicing.”
Octavia sighed in relief as she lowered the bow from her cello. She loved playing under Fortissimo in the Canterlot Symphony most days, but sometimes the pegasus became a little to high strung for his own good. Especially anytime he hears the princesses will be in attendance. After six hours of playing the same piece over and over she was ready to go home and do anything else. Even put up with Vinyl Scratch and her no doubt 'epic wub party'. Anything to get away from the concert hall for a bit.
She was gently packing her cello when she spotted the last pony she wanted to see make his way over to her section. Octavia tried to hurry but unfortunately dropped her music book onto the ground, scattering the sheet music. She counted to ten as she tried to hastily pick up the music.
“Why hello Octavia, would you care for a hoof?” Pitchworthy smiled down, the dusty colored unicorn not catching Octavia's eye roll in annoyance.
“Hello Pitchworthy, what a...surprise to see you here again.” Octavia offered diplomatically to her ex-boyfriend. She had once dated the talented musician a couple of years ago. Unfortunately certain flaws had led to her leaving him, something he hadn't ever really come to accept.
Octavia finished picking up the music and simply shoved the book into her saddlebag. She would sort the music later. Right now the only thing she was concerned with was putting distance between her and her ex.
“Well its been a pleasure but-” Octavia's hasty retreat was cut off by the stallion.
“Now Octavia. I was hoping we could talk longer. After all we hardly get to see each other anymore.” Pitchworthy tried to say seductively as he lifted Octavia's hoof to his lips with a smile.
However Octavia wasn't having it and snatched it away, “That might have something to do with your involvement in Brass Bells visit to the hospital. Honestly, overreacting like that and especially since we are not an item anymore. Now if you excuse me.” She tried to push past him but found he wasn't budging.
“Now Octavia, I know you like to play hard to get. But you need to lay off the games girl. First you tried to get that restraining order, and when that fails you tell old stuffy pants to kick me off the orchestra.” Pitchworty's face twisted into the sneer Octavia was to familiar with, “Makes a pony almost think you aren't interested.”
“Because I am not!” Octavia yelled as her temper finally gave way, “Now I would like you to stay away from me Pitchworthy!”
The stallion just pressed his face closer to the mare's, “Make me.” Before Octavia could respond another voice cut in from behind Pichworthy.
“Dumb-flank says what?”
Confused the stallion looked behind him. “What?”
Two hoofs slammed solidly into his face, sending Pitchworthy off his hooves and off the stage entirely. Octavia simply stared open mouthed at her rescuer. The mare in question walked to the edge of the stage and blew a bit of blue mane from her face. She leveled a glare at the stallion through violet colored glasses as he struggled to find his hooves in a daze.
“Hey! Pitchworthy! Maybe you should get a bucking clue and buck off! She ain't interested dude, she's got to much self respect to hang with a wannabe like you!”Vinyl Scratch yelled out. Turning back to Octavia she simply smiled and nodded her head to the door.
“Hey Octy, lets get out of here.” Vinyl said as she used her magic to levitate the earth pony's cello case. “The air kinda reeks.”
Octavia cast a worried look towards Pitchworthy, “Should we check on him? You did hit him pretty hard.”
“Vinyl! Get back here you bitch!” Upon hearing the stallion begin to curse up a storm Octavia's eyes hardened.
“Never mind, I see no permanent damage was done.”
Vinyl Scratch just laughed as the two mares exited the concert hall. Pitchworthy struggled to his hooves and glared pure death at the doors the two mares had disappeared through. “I will have you yet Octavia! Nopony says no to Pitchworthy!” turning his head he glared at the few ponies that had stayed to watch the show, more then a few of which were snickering or rolling their eyes. “What the buck are you looking at?!” He screamed out.
Stalking out the nearest door the stallion found himself in an alleyway and raised a hoof to his already swelling jaw. Again he cursed the mares, especially Vinyl Scratch. He started to walk down the alleyway thinking of ways to embarrass the two when a strong wind kicked up causing the vain pony to cover his eyes with a hoof against the derbies.
When the wind died down Pitchworthy lowered his hoof and didn't know what to make of what he saw. In front of him floated a ghostly mare's head. He could make out ghostly grey eyes peering at him from under the snow white bangs of her mane. Somehow, despite the sheer stereotypical see through and white appearance he knew this wasn't any sort of ghost.
“What...what are you?” Hesitantly the stallion asked. The wind seemed to gently breeze and in it he faintly heard a mare's voice.
“Friend. Your friend.” Pitchworthy had to struggle to hear the apparition. “Time...is short.”
“Ok 'friend'. What do you want with me?” In front of him the air seemed to shimmer as a white talisman began to appear. It was of a design the stallion couldn't identify other then it appeared to be a jagged hoop enclosing a diamond in the center. Gently it floated over to him, and taking the hint Pitchworthy took it in his hoof. “What is this?”
“Power. Freedom. Do with it as you wish.” The apparition whispered as it faded away. Looking down at the trinket the stallion shrugged and put it on. If nothing else he could sell it or use it for a quick lay with a mare.
Immediately as the cord rested on his neck it began to tighten painfully. Pitchworthy started to scream as the wind howled around him, and his eyes began to turn white as snow.
It was late that evening when Twilight Sparkle could still be seen in her lab. Outside the sun was slowly being lowered by Celestia, Princess of the Sun. But while Twilight usually made a point to watch the sunsets of her mentor, today her concerns lay elsewhere.
She didn't understand. That was all Twilight could think of as she stared at the results of her testing. In front of her in a special magic circle floated a tiny image of a human. Twilight had intended to cross the spell with another that would allow her to see the different stages of human growth. But it wasn't the human that she thought the blood had come from. The spell was designed so that remains could be easily identified in case of an accident or misadventure. It was foolproof, unfalsifiable, infallible, and yet what she was seeing now was denying those claims.
She looked up at the sound of the lab's door opening. Spike, her assistant, walked in carrying several bags in his claws. “Hey Twilight, sorry to be so late but Morning Mist had misplaced her inventory in the warehouse.” He called out as he put the bags down in a corner.
It was then that he saw the damage that had occurred earlier in the day, “Holy guacamole Twi! What happened?!”
“Our human friend crashed into one of my machines, and I apparently fainted for some reason.” She said as if talking about the weather. Spike however didn't look the least bit convinced.
“The one you told me about last night?” Spike shook his head in wonderment. “Twilight, she stumbled into one of your crazy machines and it ripped apart?” He deadpanned.
The princess looked uncertain, “Y-yes. I think so. I...kinda passed out?”
“What?!” The baby dragon cried, “Twilight! You should be with the nurses!” Spike moved to the door to get help for the pony.
“Spike! I'm fine!” The pony protested loudly, Spike winced.
“Ok! Ok!” He said with a shrug of his shoulders, “Geez, one of these days you are going to be to sick to shrug it off you know.”
Twilight just smiled, “Thank you for your concern Spike. But really, I'm fine.” She assured him. “Why don't you head on to bed, I'll be in shortly.”
The dragon gave a large yawn in response, “Ok, Morning Mist really took it out of me this time. See you in the morning Twi.” He called out as he left the room.
Twilight Sparkle just stared down at the image. Various theories ran through her head. The human could actually be a changeling. But she dismissed that though immediately , the spell would have revealed that and not an apparently different human. But the human could just be a shapeshifter in her own world right? However Twilight recalled Krystal saying humans didn't have magic, right?
The princess narrowed her eyes at the enigma while her wings fluttered in agitation. She hated puzzles she couldn't solve. Raising her eyes she stared at the broken machine again. Her assistant had been right, it did seem odd that anypony simply stumbling would rip metal. That was impossible too, right? Twilight closed her eyes as a headache returned again, she shook her head to try to dispel it.
“I just need to run more tests,” She said quietly to herself. Raising a hoof she tried to massage the headache away. But that left one final question, should she tell anyone about the blood?
Twilight pondered that, Celestia had already made clear she did not trust the human. But what she didn't understand was why. She recalled that the ruler claimed a darkness lay within Krystal, but so far Twilight hadn't seen any evidence. She had no doubt that Celestia knew what she was talking about. However with so little evidence it wouldn't be right to accuse Krystal of anything yet, right?
After a long moment Twilight made up her mind, at the slightest hint that Krystal intended any pony harm she would reveal what she knew. But until then or she had more evidence she would keep the results of the blood test to herself. With a smile the princess dispelled the image and headed off to bed.

It was night and the moon was just beginning to rise over the horizon as Krystal walked through the gardens again. She still felt the hunger burn within her, despite surprisingly enjoying another vegetarian dinner. The creature knew what she truly craved this night, but fought down the instinct to indulge. She knew what lay down that path, and she had already fought tooth and nail to reject that aspect of herself. There would be time later to feed, for now though she needed answers.
Walking around a familiar hedge the creature once again found herself standing in a courtyard observing the elegant dance of a blade. Luna though had changed from what to a normal human would be considered a great-sword for two shorter blades. They swept through the air in opposition and it took a moment for Krystal to realize that Luna was essentially shadowboxing.
As one blade swept forward it's twin moved to parry. The clang of metal on metal rang loud in the silent courtyard as the blades slammed into each other. With the two blades in a deadlock Krystal noticed the strain and grim smile on Luna's face.
She's sure enjoying this. Krystal thought with a smile as she crossed her arms. After a second one blade seemed to win out over the other and batted it away. Sensing the show was over the woman began to clap to show her approval. “Excellent show Princess.” She called out jovially as she walked forward.
Luna smiled in turn, “Good evening Krystal. Are you having trouble sleeping again?” She brought the swords down and lay them in front of her upon the grass.
“Not tonight actually,” the woman said with a laugh. “I was hoping to ask you some questions, but got caught up in the swordplay.” Luna blushed at this which made Krystal smile more. “How long have you been practicing?”
“Well I am a little out of practice, truth be told.” She protested gently. “However before my...stay on the moon I was the most accomplished swordspony in Equestria.” Luna declared with pride.
“Do humans have interest in the martial arts?” Asked the princess with a tilt of her head.
Krystal nodded, “Actually a fair bit. Most though for recreation or self defense. I still practice now and again some sword skills I learned when younger. I find it helps to keep in touch with my roots now and again.”
Luna smiled before floating a blade hilt first to the woman. “I would be honored if you were to show me your technique. I too find it helps to practice my art.”
Krystal smiled as she took the hilt uneasily. The blade was a little lighter then she preferred, and didn't have the curve of a traditional saber which was her trained weapon. But she felt she could make do. “Are you sure you wish to practice against me? Sounds like the best swordsman of Equestria could do better.”
“Please indulge me?” Luna insisted gently.
It's been over a hundred years since I’ve held a blade. Hope the old saying is true, and it's just like a bike. Krystal though ruefully as she shook her head and brought the blade to the ready. Her stance shifted to a basic fencing stance, with one difference being her left hand held in front of her stomach in a fist. The woman's face became neutral as she focused on her opponent. The princess' face also adopting a similar visage.
For a long moment neither moved. But in a single instant Krystal exploded forward. Surprised the princess tried to bring her blade to bear but it was easily knocked aside. In a second it was over with the woman having the edge of her blade lightly pressed against her opponent's throat.
Gently the victor removed the blade and took a step back. “Care to try again?” She asked softly with a smile. But inside she secretly hoped the princess would reconsider, thinking an overwhelming display would derail further interest in the creature's ability.
Unfortunately Luna showed no inclination of backing down. The pony's horn flared as the sword was brought to bear once more. Sighing at the silent challenge the woman herself returned to the ready. This time though she knew the same trick probably wouldn't work twice.
Again both combatants paused, and then at some unseen signal the princess' blade swept forward. Instantly Krystal was put on the defense as she found the blade sweeping around her like an angry hornet. It was all she could do to keep her blade at the defense.
Faster and faster the blade seemed to strike at the woman. Louder and quicker came the sounds of metal meeting metal. Until finally one strike put Krystal's blade out of position, and she felt cool metal pressed against the back of her neck. Krystal's eyes opened in shock before she gently closed them and gave a soft chuckle.
“It seems the years have been kind to your technique Princess.” She said as she gave a bow.
Luna smiled as she returned the blade to her side. The woman noting that though the pony hadn't moved from her spot she still had a sheen to her coat. “You give me far to much credit Krystal, few could have sustained such an effort as you did. Tell me, how did you learn your style?”
Krystal lost her smile at that. She remembered what had happened with Twilight all to clearly, and she was still to weak to experience something like that again. Even with the embrace of the night, there was a limit to what she could endure. But Krystal also felt disinclined to lie in response to the princess' question. In the back of her mind she wondered at that.
Then inspiration hit her, “Do you remember my...comment at dinner the other night?”
“Oh yes,” Luna said with a laugh. “It was most entertaining if enlightening.”
“Yes well, in my world humans and equines work together in many things. One of those things was in defense of our land.” Krystal explained with pride. “In fact, I was part of the cavalry at one point. Humans rode on the backs of our companions and we fought as one.”
Luna stared wide eyed, “That sounds remarkable. Two races working as one, it almost sounds like the foundation of Equestria.”
This piqued Krystal's interest, as it was exactly where she had wanted the conversation to go to begin with. “Really? How did that work?”
Luna smiled as she briefly went over the foundation of Equestira. The three races of ponies coming together and overcoming their differences to live in peace. The retreat of the windigoes at the friendship the three leaders embraced that cold winter's night. How it eventually became the meaning behind Hearth's Warming Eve.
Krystal tapped her chin in thought, “That sounds vaguely similar to a different holiday a lot of humans celebrate. So that's where you, Celestia, and Twilight came from?”
“Well no,” Luna said with a shake of her head. “Twilight Sparkle became a princess when she mastered magic to such a degree to become an alicorn. Specifically it was through the friendship she shares with the Elements of Harmony.”
Elements of Harmony? Just how steeped in magic is this place? Krystal mused. She still hadn't shaken that sense of magic permeating the land. Though it seemed benign, it still set her on edge if she thought about it to much. “So just who or what are these Elements?”
“They are the five friends of Twilight. Though currently they live in Ponyville to the north. They represent the five elements of friendship: Generosity, Laughter, Kindness, Loyalty, and Honestly.” Luna explained as if she were conducting a lesson. “Twilight though represents the element of magic, and collectively they wield the Elements of Harmony. Which are capable of restoring balance to those out of it.”
Krystal just scratched the back of her head, “Ok, so does that mean that Twilight's friends are....alicorns you called it?”
Luna shook her head, “No only Twilight Sparkle became an alicorn princess.”
“That sounds like her friends got the short end of the stick if they are all these 'elements'.”
Luna shrugged, “Magic is like that, sometimes it wishes to go a way we do not understand.”
“I thought ponies had this magic thing figured out?” Noted Krystal.
“Magic is magic.” Luna replied as if that explained everything.
Krystal sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose. In a way it did, after all even after centuries others who shared her curse hadn't made sense of it's origin or purpose. In the end, the ones who cared also just attributed magic to having it's own sick sense of humor sometimes.
“Ok then, but you still left out one part in the history lesson teacher.” The woman said slyly as she leveled a grin towards the pony. “When did you and Celestia take power? What about your parents?”
It was a curious sight, as Krystal had no idea a pony was even capable of going pale. But immediately Luna did at the question, even going so far as to take a step back. “I-I...I don't...” She stammered.
“It is not a concern of yours human.” An authoritative voice called out. Turning her head the woman spotted the ruler of Equestria standing across the courtyard flanked by two unicorns in golden armor. Even in the paler light of the moon, it made for an impressive and imposing sight.
“Ah Celestia. How are you this evening?” Krystal called out in false cheer. The pony in question gave a smile that was neither kind nor welcoming.
“I was pleasantly asleep until awoken by you two.” Krystal noted that Luna ducked her head, as if a child being caught doing something forbidden by a parent.
“Yes a shame at that, sorry to wake you.” Krystal said as she a gave a small bow. “Now why is Equestria's history not my concern again?” She asked while narrowing her eyes.
“You will be soon be returning to your own world. So surely the details of our past is of little concern.” It wasn't a question by the tone of Celestia's voice.
“What can I say Princess? I'm a curious girl, and I’ve come across quite a few curious things in my short stay here.” Krystal replied while crossing her arms. “Besides, I might find it rather enjoyable here. Already making friends, and Twilight seemed rather interested in my people's technology.”
For a long moment a silence hanged in the courtyard. The woman stared at the ruler and neither backed from the others gaze. Finally it was Celestia who sighed and looked away.
“Perhaps we should be reconsidering where you are staying, Krystal Smith.” She said softly while looking at the woman from the corner of her eye.
Krystal grinned savagely, “By all means Princess, if you think that is best.” Unspoken words lingered afterwords.
“Enough!” Luna cried out from the sidelines. “Krystal Smith, I beseech ye to refrain from taunts against mine sister! Celestia, control thine disdain!” Luna commanded angrily.
Krystal turned her smile towards Luna before letting it slip away. Giving a sigh she nodded to the princess of the night. “As you wish Princess.” Leveling one last look to the white alicorn she began to walk away.
“Have a good night's rest Celestia.” The woman called over her shoulder as she left. Celestia did nothing but narrow her eyes once more. When out of sight Krystal ducked down into the shadows and concentrated. In the distance the sounds of the princesses talking became clear, but she felt the hunger beginning to become more acute within.
“-ent over this Luna. You must give up your practice with these toys.” Celestia's voice was that of a chastising mother.
“It is my talent Sister,” Luna replied defiantly. “My skill with the blade served us well against Discord if you recall. As did your spells, which I know you miss.”
“But there is no need, you know we cannot turn back time. Those skills are useless to us now, nothing more then parlor tricks.” Celestia sighed. “That is why we agreed you would put aside your swords, to prevent the temptation of becoming Nightmare Moon again.”
“Wrong Sister, it was at your insistence. I have been practicing for months now, and I have had no inclination to strike at another or at you. I don't even really remember why I did to begin with.”
“Regardless, these are peaceful times Luna. Crime is non-existent now, we have abolished poverty, there is no more strife between ponies or other creatures in our lands.” Celestia's voice insisted.
Luna scoffed and her voice took an edge, “Yes Sister, and I know of thine crimes to accomplish this feat. Yours and the those of thine pet wizard. Though myself is immune to your actions.” There was a pause for a few seconds. “Tis that why you resent Krystal so? Because she too is immune?”
Crimes? Immune? Immune to what? Krystal wondered frantically. She almost let her concentration slip, and struggled to listen to the rest of the conversation.
“The human may be immune, but we both know that isn't the threat she poses.” Celestia replied harshly. But then the ruler's voice became soft and gentle. “Luna you were there, you know everything I have done has been to keep the people safe. To keep our people safe.” The ruler insisted.
“Yet you allowed Discord to go free Sister. We do not even know where he is now.”
Celestia sighed, “Discord was a gamble, but he is on our side. Or at least is not a threat any longer since we know he is not in our lands. Twilight and her friends did not have the control we did long ago, and the magic would not last forever. Either Twilight would succeed, or I would have had Discord destroyed. Even he would not have survived being ground to dust.”
“Y-you would have done this?” Luna asked sorrowfully. “Even with what he is to you, to us?”
Celestia sighed, “Yes sister, I would have. The damage Discord did the first time was nearly catastrophic. I was not lying to Twilight when I told her his powers could be useful if turned to good. But if he could not...” Celestia trailed off with another sigh
“What is good anymore?” Luna wondered aloud emotionless. “What can we know of good after all we have done?”
“We know it in the happiness of our people sister.” Celestia said softly. “Our people live full lives. They are well cared for, they are protected, and they know we will do whatever it takes to safeguard their future. That is why we are good Luna. That is how we turn a curse into a blessing.”
Celestia walked up beside her sister and began to hug her with a wing while nuzzling her. “Come on LuLu, I’m already up so how about we have the kitchen whip up a few snacks?”
Luna sighed before before he voice hinted at a smile, “Alright Celi, but I will keep you from the cake. Your posterior is larger then it used to be.” She teased before racing ahead. The ruler gave an indignant snort before chasing afterward, laughing all the way.
Meanwhile Krystal allowed the power to fade as she leaned back against the stone wall behind her. For all the answers she had just gotten, another question or two replaced them. She knew she would have to apologize to Luna later, but having gotten the princess in trouble even by accident was a turn of luck for Krystal.
But why did she care? Krystal had no stakes in this land's troubles or future. Why did she feel she had to get involved? What did it matter to her if something bad might happen to these lands? Krystal didn't know the answer to any of this, but she knew hero's never lived long. Especially the kind of 'hero' that goes looking for trouble.
However she felt compelled to solve this mystery. But she refused to take another step until she knew why. As if to answer her a long faded memory swam to the surface.
”Dad, I'm going to join the cavalry. It's good money, and...” He looked up at his father as he held the post steady. “I know it sounds dumb, but I just don't think letting the Union split is the right thing to do.”
His father said nothing as the two finished setting the post. After nailing the fence together they walked to the next post in the line. The son looking up at the father hoping for some reaction. For something to work off of whether it was good or bad. As they finished digging the hole the son's father took hold of the post as he did before. The son gave one more look before working to center the post in the hole.
“So what are you waiting for?” The father gruffly replied. “You already know what I feel about the military and the government. If the southerners want to break off that is their choice, not Lincoln’s. What do you want me to say?”
“I-I don't know Dad. I just thought you should know.” The son said morosely.
The father sighed before squatting down to his son's level. Making sure his son was looking him in the eye before he gave his reply. “Son, it is the mark of a man to do what he thinks is right. Maybe that 'right' isn't what most folks think it ought to be, but that is something else and far to academic for me. There will be damned many a time you won't even know yourself why you are doing it, but you just do what you think is the right thing to do. As long as you can deal with the consequences, to hell with anyone who tells you different.” After he finished the man gave his son one of his few smiles before clapping him on the back.
“I won't say I’m happy son, I won't lie about that. But I will say I'm damn proud of you and always will be.” With that he stood up and took hold of the pole again. “Alright, lets finish this fence up before making sure your mother knows your big plans tonight.”
“You want to tell her together?” The son wondered.
“Hell no son! You are on your own for that!” His father replied while laughing.
Krystal grinned at the memory. She knew her father had been right. Sometimes you felt the need to do what you felt what was right even if you didn't understand why. She didn't know herself why she felt this was a mystery to be solved, but something deep within her compelled her to continue on. For now, she would follow that feeling in her heart. After all that is what makes a man a man, right?
With a nod of her head the woman stood and began to make her way back to her room. The guards would be to alert this night for her to safely steal out of the castle, and taking from someone in the castle was far to risky. She would just have to deal with the hunger for one more day.

“Now presenting, Princess Celestia and Princess Twilight Sparkle!” Krystal winced at the booming voice of the court crier. It was the next morning and the woman had decided to see how these ponies conducted their affairs. More specifically she wanted to see how Celestia conducted her nation.
From the balcony above the court Krystal watched as the two daytime princesses walked along the red carpet to their thrones. She had asked a maid that morning if Luna would be in attendance, but found out that since she was in charge of the night Luna tended to sleep during much of the day. The woman wondered if Luna was upset at that.
I don't think I would be. This is far to formal for my liking. Krystal thought as she grimaced. If simple introductions into daily court were this formal, she knew by the time it was over it would be a constant battle to stave off snoring. Though that thought was followed by soft sound of hoofs behind her.
“Curious place to find you, Krystal.” Came a gruff voice from behind Krystal. Knowing who the owner was she drew a big smile before turning around.
“Captain! So good to see you again. How did the hunt for your cousins go?” The smile went from forced to genuine at the discomfort of Captain Snow Bloom.
“I handled the issue. More importantly why are you here?” Snow Bloom deflected while narrowing her eyes from behind her helmet.
Casting a look over her shoulder Krystal noted that court was now in session. “Oh, just thought I would see how ol' Celestia handles affairs. Lot to be said about a ruler and and their use of power, don't you agree?” Krystal caught a flicker of movement from the captain's eyes, as they shifted for a split second between her...and Twilight.
That struck a nerve. Krystal mused. “Tell me captain, why do you dislike Twilight Sparkle so much?” Again the captain shifted uncomfortably at the woman's comments, but she refrained from smiling at it this time.
“I-I mean I don't...” The captain tried futility to deny.
Krystal just sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose. “Snow Bloom, just stop. You might be able to fool Twilight, but I doubt you are fooling anyone else. Especially not me.” Looking into the ponies eyes she laced her voice with a small amount of power. “Would you kindly just tell me what the issue is?”
She knew it might be nothing but a fool's jealousy at power. Krystal had seen it in hundreds of humans in her own world. But the way the captain had reacted to the suggestion of abuse of power made her curious, especially in regards to Twilight. That was why she risked a small amount of the blood she had left to ease the truth out of the captain.
The laced suggestion seemed to do it's job, almost to well in fact. The captain's eyes narrowed as she openly glared for a second or two at the purple alicorn below. With a shake of her head however Snow Bloom regained her composure before looking back at Krystal.
“What do you know of Princess Twilight, Krystal?” The captain asked curtly.
“To be honest, very little other then apparently she is part of these “Elements of Harmony”. The woman admitted with a shrug, “That and apparently she wasn't always a princess.”
“Yes,” The unicorn snorted. “Before then she was just Twilight Sparkle the Student. She was even on the verge of being dismissed on her application day to Canterlot's premier magic school when she had a magic fluke. She lost control of her magic and was rewarded for it by the Princess. Rewarded by becoming Celestia's prized pupil.”
“So that's it? Jealousy? I'm rather disappointed Snow Bloom.” Krystal said in a bored tone. So maybe ponies aren't that different after all.
“No.” Snow Bloom said darkly “It was when she and her 'friends' became the elements of harmony. Do you know how many times Ponyville has had to be rebuilt? It's citizens reimbursed for damages caused by her and her 'Elements of Harmony'? Twilight Sparkle herself even caused an unthinkable riot, and the Princess didn't so much as lecture her! In fact the only time I have ever seen or heard Twilight reprimanded was for disrupting her brother's wedding!”
With a huff she pawed at the carped with a hoof. “She is dangerously reckless with her magic. She is at times more then a little unstable. Yet now she is a ruler with Princesses Celestia and Luna!”
The woman raised an eyebrow at the pony's story and increased agitation. That was only a mild suggestion I put in her, but hell if this pony has some issues. Still, sounds like there is more to Twilight then I might have first taken her for.
“So why put up with it?” Krystal asked casually. The comment seemed enough to shock Snow Bloom out of her tirade.
“W-what do you mean?”
The woman shrugged, “You are a Captain of the Guard. You are answering directly to a ruler you don't like. Why do that? Can't find work doing something else? Isn't there some other nation that might better reward a guard like you?”
Snow Bloom shifted uncomfortably for the third time. At this point Krystal was tempted to reach over and smack the guard to spit it out already. Though it made her pause. When she had first met the captain the guard was sure of herself, confident. Now suddenly she was shifting from hoof to hoof. Internally Krystal winced. Ah geez, don't tell me I accidentally broke her!
“I have to follow my destiny.” Said the captain softly.
“Destiny? What do you mean?”
“My cutie mark, it is my special talent. My destiny is to guard the throne of Equestria, my special talent is that of defense. The stronger my opponent strikes the more steadfast my defense becomes. I was one of the top lieutenants to the last Captain of the Guard.” Snow Drop said glumly.
Krystal shook her head. “Ok, I’m a bit confused. What is a cutie mark, and why would it dictate your 'destiny'?”
Snow Bloom presented her hind end to the woman. On it was depicted a shield with a stylized flower emblazoned upon it's surface. “A cutie mark appears to ponies who have found their special talent, the thing that will make them most happy to perform in life.”
Krystal pondered that. On the surface it seemed like a very limiting concept, you are bound to whatever your talent was. But then again if you were good at something, wouldn't you enjoy doing it? Like the old advice, 'find work that lets you play'. But then again, what if your 'special talent' was something much darker? Though she decided not to voice such an opinion, instead looking back over her shoulder to watch the court below. Noticing the various symbols in a new light, though none seemed obvious to their meaning.
Well, not the information I sought out. But information is information, and yet another puzzle piece. Why would Celestia want what sounds like such a dangerous student? In a way it reminded her of her time in the Army so very long ago. Where one recruit might be favored to where they could do no wrong. Even worse when that recruit didn't seem to know half the time which end of the horse went forward. Those same recruits tended for gruesome fates on the battlefield, their instructors having done no favors in their coddling.
Turning back to the captain she gave a small bow. “Thank you captain, you have been a tremendous help.” Raising her head she caught the captain's confused gaze. “Now you will remember nothing of this talk, you simply thought you heard something on this balcony. But nothing was here.”
A few moments later Snow Bloom looked around dazed before snorting. “Guess it was nothing.” The mare said as she left the empty balcony.

Pitchworthy stalked his apartment, his eyes bloodshot. He had seen the truth, to everything. With the power he now possessed he could take on an army, or even two. He was sure of it. He raised a hoof to play with the amulet around his neck. The cord tight enough that it almost broke his skin. He wouldn't be able to remove it, but why would he? Why would he ever wish to go back to being old Pitchworthy again?
No, he was improved. Almost perfect now. He felt his face, where that bitch of a pony had kicked him. The single flaw carried over from his transformation. He would have to respond to that, wouldn't he? To deal with that Vinyl Scratch, and in the process claim what should have been his long ago.
Looking at the clock he realized tonight would be the perfect night. He would break Vinyl Scratch, and publicly claim Octavia. He would show his power to Equestria, to where not even the Princesses or the Elements could stop him. With a chuckle he began to pack his flutes, tonight would be a special night for all of Canterlot!

Luna slept gently, laying in her darkened bedchamber. The heavy curtains allowing the normally nocturnal princess to sleep in relative peace. Soundly she slept with visions of dancing swords and noble adventures playing in her mind's eye. But above her the air seemed to shiver and shake as a white mare's head appeared out of the air. Though in an unseen and felt wind her mane shifted to reveal a small knob of a horn peaking through.
“Betrayer.” The apparition hissed in quiet fury. “It is you who should rot, not I. You and your sister.” The ghostly mare's face twisted into a wholly gruesome visage of anger and hate. Then it dissolved into a white mist while floating down into the mare's ears.
The mare twitched fitfully in her sleep. Her dreams shifted into terrible nightmares filled with imagery of the worst kinds. But in the darkness she found herself running towards a familiar figure. In her mind's eye Krystal handed her a sword and the two fought as one against the shadowy nightmares. Dancing between fang and claw, drawing thick black ichor with steel for the monster's troubles.
But the shadows were to much, and Luna felt the darkness envelop her. Krystal was dragged underneath and out of sight. While Luna herself felt claws and talons rip into her. With a screech Luna jerked awake. Shivering she jerked her head around, the terror and phantom pain still fresh.
With a sigh she relaxed, annoyed with herself. It had been years since she had ever had a nightmare. Unpleasant dreams perhaps, but as one of her abilities was to walk in others dreams she in turn had almost complete mastery of her own. But a nightmare was unusual.
Luna got out of bed and walked to a nearby mirror. She was up, and like her sister the night before might as well enjoy it. She reflected on the dream as she brushed her mane. Why had she dreamed of the human? She thought of how they had fought, even if it ended in defeat.
“It was like her, cavalry I think she called it.” Luna mused aloud with a chuckle. “I wonder if that is how they fought on her world?”
After finishing up she made for the door but paused as she passed a table. On it was her ticket to tonight's concert. She enjoyed such outings, as it was one of the few times so many ponies were up late into her night's. But something made her pause as she stared at the solitary ticket.
Upon leaving the room she quickly spotted one of the maids going about her chores. “Fig Leaf, may I have a moment?”
The green mare bowed at Luna's approach, “Of course Princess. How may I help you?”
“Would you be so kind as to contact the concert hall? I would like to request another ticket for tonight's performance.”
The maid bowed, “As you wish, Princess.” As she left Luna contemplated what she was doing. Celestia would be furious once she found out what her sister planned to do. But Luna somehow knew deep inside having Krystal with her tonight would be for the best.
Padfoot looked around his command tent. Assembled in front of the alpha wolf were the best hunters in the land of Lupania. In front of him on a table lay a map of the surrounding area, with several sections marked or circled.
“Searra, you and your pack will head to the northeast today. Make sure you meet your quota, I don't want any more excuses, or I will take the difference from your hide,” he stated firmly, not even looking up at the female as she nodded and padded out the entrance. “The rest of you, same directions and hunting grounds as yesterday. Make sure you all meet you quota, the homelands count on it.”
One by one, the pack leaders nodded and left, leaving the alpha and his chief lieutenant behind. He scowled down at the map. He was in charge of a hunting expedition to bring back food for his people. His band one of many scattered throughout the lands. But every year there were more mouths to feed and less prey to feed them with. He growled at the map, as if challenging it to present a solution.
“Calm yourself Padfoot. A leader must always show restraint and serenity, no matter how thin the belly or elusive the prey,” Ironpaw gently rumbled beside him. Padfoot turned his gaze over to his teacher and trusted friend.
“You are right Ironpaw, but our people need these supplies. Our cubs need to eat, but there is not enough,” Padfoot sighed.
Ironpaw placed a paw upon his student's back in gentle reassurance, “There never is my friend. For even when the prey is plentiful you can't take it all, lest the meat spoil before it could be enjoyed.”
“But what if I told you of new lands you could hunt?” a soft voice cut in from behind them. Both wolves snapped their heads around to see a white unicorn standing boldly in the hunters' tent.
Padfoot immediately lowered himself into a crouch and began to growl, his instincts screamed at him to show the pony it's heart while it still beat. But he was restrained by the Ironpaw's calm foreleg. The elder hunter's instincts telling him that this was not prey, and not to be taken lightly.
“Speak. Who are you, and what business do you have in a camp of Lupania?” Ironpaw demanded calmly, though his voice was laced with steel.
The mare simply chuckled. “I have come to tell you of an opportunity. Tonight all three of the princesses will be occupied, and indisposed. That will leave you and your pack a... window of opportunity. Attack Ponyville, and the five Elements of Harmony who live there will be defenseless. Ripe for the taking... or slaughter.” The unicorn finished with an unpleasant smile.
Ironpaw considered this. The ponies of Equestria had long held sway over the best lands of the hunt. Though themselves prey, they had managed to drive Lupania almost to the brink of extinction. The two reasons for this still sat on the throne of Equestria to this day, and an ancient treaty promised no remorse should it ever be broken.
But worst part yet was the rise of a new threat in Equestria, one that all the lands knew of. Now there was the threat the Elements of Harmony presented to any foolish enough to cross the ponies. But if the mare spoke true, then perhaps the capture of even one Element would be enough to bargain with. For it also was no secret that the Elements were personal friends of the country's newest princess.
Padfoot began to growl again, “Why should we trust you! This could be a trap!”
The mare simply looked down at the crouched wolf with disdain. “What would Equestria gain by trapping a few mangy wolves? Now, I have given you the information you need. Either act on it or starve, the choice is yours... Alpha .” With that the an unseen breeze seemed to whip around the mare, and she dissolved as if sand into it.
Once their visitor was gone, the two wolves were silent for a moment. “Ironpaw,” Padfoot spoke softly. “What is your opinion on this matter.”
The older wolf was silent, as he thought for a time before speaking, “Her words were obviously full of deception and manipulation, though I do not know to what end. However, I do believe the mare spoke truth about this opportunity; she was right in that Equestria would have nothing to gain by trapping us. However it would mean violating an ancient treaty with Equestria, to stay away from its lands and peoples.” He sighed before turning his golden eyes meet his student's gaze, “You have the authority to break this treaty as an Alpha of the Hunt. But once you do, if we fail to acquire even one element the two immortal princesses will likely raze our lands in retribution. The third would also not take well to the assault on her friends.”
Padfoot walked over to the table and gazed down on the cold truth of his people. They had enough in reserve for perhaps a half dozen winters yet. But each year, his people would be that much hungrier, and eventually there would be not enough for anyone. Cubs would die, his cubs could die. Even if it meant serving this unknown mare's purposes, he felt there was little choice to be made. A fool's hope or not, the promise of more food for his family and country had to be explored.
He looked over at his teacher and most trusted lieutenant and hardened his heart for what lay ahead. “Better to die as the prey's hunter, than to be preyed on by Death,” he spoke sagely. “Ironpaw, I want you to take two packs worth of the remaining and most rested of our comrades. Make sure you return with an Element, or do not return at all.”
Ironpaw smiled and ducked his head. “As you wish Alpha, it will be done.”

Krystal simply blinked at the maid at her door. Her gaze constantly shifting a dumbfounded look between her and the ticket offered to her, somehow, in her hoof. “I'm sorry, could you repeat that again?”
“Princess Luna asked for you to be in attendance with herself and the other princesses at tonight's concert,” the maid answered, trying to hide her irritation at having to repeat herself a third time. “Ms. Krystal Smith, please take the ticket. I must be returning to my duties now.”
Shaking her head the woman did as she was asked, “So what time is this concert anyways?”
“The concert will begin at nine o'clock tonight. However, the Princesses tend to leave an hour early,” the maid replied and then turned away from the door, preparing to leave. “If that will be all?” she asked, looking back over her shoulder.
“Oh. Yes, thank you.” Krystal responded offhandedly, still staring at the ticket. She missed the maid rolling her eyes as she walked away. Sugar Song didn't see what the fuss was with the human. She seemed a little slow, in the pony's opinion.
The woman however just closed the door and set the ticket on the vanity. This was an odd turn of events in her mind. She was first banned from leaving the castle, to now being invited to a night on the town. Krystal pondered the turn of events before shrugging.
Never look a gift horse in the mouth, as it were. The woman smiled at the new meaning to the old phrase. Then she looked at her old weathered pack, now residing beside the vanity. Did she have anything to wear for such an even? Would it even matter? Most ponies I've seen don't even wear clothes, I could probably just wear my underwear and say it was formal wear, and they would buy it. Krystal chuckled softly at the thought.
Gazing at the clock she realized she still had a few hours to kill. Picking up her pocket knife, she quickly pocketed it along with the ticket before heading out the door. Walking through the castle's hallways, she eventually made her way to a certain tower on the grounds.
Twilight looked up from a microscope as Krystal entered her lab. Immediately, she smiled at the woman and stepped away from her workbench and greeted the woman, “Good afternoon Krystal. What brings you by today?”
Krystal smiled in turn to the princess and replied, “Not terribly much. I had some free time, and wanted to check in on you after yesterday. Also to see if you might have found anything that might be useful to getting me home.”
Twilight frowned as she turned back to her workbench. Krystal noted that it was covered in books and notes. Twilight then spoke dejectedly, “I'm sorry Krystal. But so far I have not been even able to figure out how you even arrived in Equestria, much less send you back.” She sighed and offered, “Maybe if we could find out where exactly you appeared? But I can't find a map of the caverns, do you think you could lead me there?”
Of course, that cave gave off such a stench of death I could probably sniff it out from the entrance. But I would rather hold onto that card for a bit longer. “Sorry Twilight. But until Celestia lets me out of the doghouse, I don't think it would be a good idea to go back to the caves.” Krystal made a show of looking as disappointed as Twilight appeared, keeping to herself a quiet thanks to the alabaster ruler's mistrust.
“Oh. You're probably right about that,” Twilight replied in obvious disappointment before perking up again. Twilight's horn lit and a syringe floated to her side, “Well in that case, I know of something else we can work on in the meantime. Well, that I can work on. You wouldn't need to do much, except give me some blood after all.” Krystal almost took a step back from the princess. Though she wore a disarming smile, the... enthusiasm she showed made her uneasy. That, along with the rather large needle now floating beside the pony.
“Um...” Krystal started, her voice more than a bit nervous. “Do you even know where to stick that? How much blood do you need anyways?”
“Well I don't need much, but I’m sure I can find it easily enough.” Twilight stated confidently.
“This isn't digging for oil, Princess!” Krystal shot back, more than a little annoyed. With a sigh she extended her hand out. “Just give me the syringe, please.”
Looking a little sheepish the pony complied. Excusing herself, Krystal walked into the closet that had saved her life the day before. Once the door was closed, she flipped the syringe around in her hand and slid its tip into her arm. With obviously practiced ease, she drew out some blood and withdrew the needle, letting the puncture close instantly without even a drop of wasted blood. Walking back out, she passed the half-full syringe to the princess.
The pony accepted it with a raised eyebrow. “Why did you have to go in the closet?”
Krystal shrugged, “I don't like to make a show of giving blood. It's taboo in my culture.” The woman explained offhandedly. Twilight seemed to accept it as she set the syringe aside. Twilight turned back to Krystal and was about to say something when the door opened.
“Twilight! There you are! We need to get you ready for...” The baby dragon paused as he spotted non-pony in the room. “Wowzers. So, you are this 'human' everyone has been talking about?”
The woman raised an eyebrow at the purple creature in front of her. “Yes.... call me Krystal.” She shook her head and asked, “I'm sorry, this might be a tad rude but...what are you?”
“He's a baby dragon, Krystal,” Twilight supplied for her.
Krystal sighed, “Baby dragon. Of course. I don't think there's really anything left to really surprise me about what can be found around here anymore.” She shook her head slightly and pointed a finger at Spike, “Well, if you have a baby dragon, where is his mother... I'm sorry what was your name again?” Krystal directed at spike.
Spike shrugged, “Name's Spike. As for Mom... we don't know. I was hatched from an egg by Twilight.” Krystal almost laughed at the mental image that induced. Looking at the alicorn princess she tried to imagine Twilight sitting on an egg to hatch it. Though she suspected it wasn't as simple as that.
Still having a fit of giggles, Krystal fought to control herself as she stated, “So, Twilight is your Mom?” The woman noticed the fierce blush that adorned the princess' face at that comment.
“Nah, she's more like a big sister. Though she bosses me like a mom, raised me like a mom, sometimes she grounds me like-” Spike counted off on his claws.
“Ok Spike,” Twilight groaned though her teeth. “No need to go into that much detail. You needed to see me?” Krystal let out another small chuckle at the very obviously agitated 'big sister.'
“Right.” Spike got back on topic with a snap of his claws. “You need to start getting ready for the concert tonight.”
Twilight sighed and looked at the syringe on her table, along with all her notes as she complained softly, “But I still have so much work...”
“Twilight, I don't think I'm going anywhere anytime soon,” the woman cut in gently. “Don't work yourself to hard on my account.”
Twilight seemed uncertain for a moment before letting herself give a small smile, “I guess you are right.”
Krystal gave a smile and gave her regards as she left the room. Twilight took the syringe and placed it in a small chest that would preserve the blood until she could work on it. “First thing in the morning though, we are going to see what secrets you hold.” The princess said softly to the syringe as she closed the lid.

Well this is...awkward. Krystal mused as she sat in her chair. Currently, she and the three princess sat in a box seat overlooking the concert hall. Over the edge, the woman could look down at the hundreds of ponies below. Though the small talk drifted gently up to their seats, silence reigned in the box from the occupants.
She herself sat to Luna's left, who was currently still glaring at her older sister. Celestia herself did not look happy, and divided her glare between both Krystal and Luna. Though the woman was happy to be out of the castle, she wondered at the repercussions of the stunt the younger sister had pulled.
My ears are still ringing a little from walking in on that argument. She winced at the memory. Krystal wondered if the whole city had known just how unhappy Celestia was at learning that Luna intended for the human to join them. Still, somehow Luna managed to convince her sister, though at that point Krystal had been half deaf. Enhanced healing or no, the two of Equestria's rulers had good sets of lungs on them.
Deciding to break the silence, she spoke up, “So... who are we listening to tonight?” Unfortunately both sisters ignored her.
They all sat in silence like that for what the woman felt was forever. The only reprieve from the stony silence was Snow Bloom, opening the door to check on the princesses. Finally the lights began to dim. With Krystal spotting what seemed to be old fashioned gas lamps being turned down by attendants.
Well, at least it will interesting to hear something in a concert hall again. I think it was after the first great war the last time I enjoyed a live performance. Krystal smiled as she settled back in her chair. Out of the corner of her eye she noticed the two sisters breaking their mutual glares to look forward as well.
Slowly, the curtain began to part, and the woman was faced with an odd sight of various ponies holding or floating traditional instruments. A single pony walked out onto the stage in what looked like a tuxedo top, carrying a conductor's baton in his mouth. Silence reigned as he took his position, in front of the orchestra. Fortissimo raised his baton in his hoof and after a dramatic pause, began the concert.
Krystal smiled as the various instruments played together in as harmonious a melody as she knew they were capable of. Pleased that despite it being a different world, the same techniques prized on her world held merit here in Equestria, she listened intently. It wasn't her usual fare, but the familiarity in a world that was not her own eased some of the tension the woman hadn't known she had carried.

Pitchworthy walked down the alley. Inside, he could hear the concert already had started. In a puddle of light, two guards in armor stood resolutely in front of the side entrance. One of them caught the glint off of the stallion's pendant.
“Halt. State your business,” one of the guards called out while blocking Pitchworthy's path.
Adopting a shocked look, the unicorn gently laid a duffel bag down beside him. “I'm sorry gentleponies. I was a bit held up and I really need to get inside, before I'm missed too much. I have a solo coming up.”
“Name?” The guard seemed unfazed at the unicorn's plight.
“Pitchworthy,” he is response tried to sound shaky and intimidated. “Please sir, I must get inside. The solo I told you about. It would just be the death of the performance if I'm not there in time.”
Both guards looked between each other before bringing their polearms to the ready. “Citizen, I'm afraid you will have to go back. No pony named 'Pitchworthy' is on the approved list.”
“But you have no list to check!” the stallion angrily cried out.
The guard gave him a smug look as he replied, “We memorized the list. Our captain's orders.”
Pitchworthy just sighed and with a flicker of his horn, drew back the zipper on the bag. “That is too bad. I was feeling generous.”
The guard who spoke raised an eyebrow in confusion, as the unicorn floated two flutes from his bag. “What do you mean, generous?”
The unicorn gave a bloodthirsty smile as he growled, “Why, I was going to let you live.”

Krystal had relaxed into the third performance, when suddenly a loud crash sounded from backstage. To their credit, the orchestra managed to not miss a beat, even when several more crashes sounded in succession. But finally they were forced to stop as a bloodcurdling scream sounded from off stage.
From her vantage spot, Krystal spotted two guards charge full-speed up the isles. With coordinated leaps, they landed on the stage before breaking off to take opposite sides of the stage. Disappearing behind the curtains, all was silent for a long, tense moment. Then a large crash sounded followed with a sickening wet crunching sound. With that, all was still again.
The door behind Krystal opened and the Captain of the Guard rushed in as she spoke, “Princess Celestia. I think it might be best if we had you and the other princess leave.”
With a nod the three princess stood up. But all froze as a hush overcame the agitated crowd below, and the five turned to spot a single pony surrounded by flutes walk out onto the stage. Behind him he left red marks on the wooden stage, and it took Krystal only a second to figure out what it was. Blood.
“Ladies and Gentlecolts. My name is Pitchworthy,” the unicorn's clear voice boomed out over the crowded hall. “I am here for several reasons. First, I am here because I care deeply for a mare, a mare that has treated me harshly for no discernible cause. I am here after being denied a chance to perform for you all.”
“You are here because you are a load of manure, Pitchy!” an electric blue-maned mare in sunglasses called out as she leaped up onto the stage.
The stallion just began to laugh loudly, and the mare snorted in anger, “What's so funny? Want the other side of yer' jaw to get some special treatment too?”
Pitchworthy just continued to laugh for several seconds more. Then, like a switch had been thrown he stopped and leveled a look of pure hatred upon the mare. “Vinyl Scratch. The third reason I came here tonight,” he snarled as a single flute floated above the mare.
Vinyl just looked at the flute with a raised eyebrow. “What? Going to serenade me with more of your crappy music, Pitchy?” Gently the flute in question began to shake softly as if being played, but no sound was heard. Vinyl Scratch began to giggle, “Geez Pitchy, you really have lost your...”
She trailed off before suddenly keeling over. Curling up into a ball, she began to shake before finally letting out an anguished scream of pain. “Sound so gentle, you can't even hear it, Vinyl Scratch. But if you have enough of it directed at one point, it does amazingly painful things to a pony's body. Don't you think?”
In the box, Princess Celestia snorted loudly as she turned to Snow Bloom and leveled her a cold glare. “What are you waiting for? Arrest that monster! ” her voice boomed out authoritatively. Captain Snow Bloom shook herself out of her daze and stepped forward.
“Guards, move forward and subdue!” her voice called out loud and clear. Immediately out of sight below, the hall's doors slammed open, allowing for six guards who rushed to the stage.
“How shocking. The guards have come to stop me.” Pitchworthy droned in a bored tone. Immediately afterwords, the flutes surrounding him shot out like spears. Surprised, the guards could do nothing to defend themselves as lacquered wood sank deeply into their necks. In seconds the charge was over, and the guards lay dying at the foot of the stage.
This was the crowd's last straw of its ability to maintain itself. Shrieking and crying loudly, the ponies below them began to make a mad charge for the door. Even from a distance, Krystal could hear the odd crack of bone as some ponies were trampled under hoof. At the sight Pitchworthy smiled, and six more flutes shot out.
But these instruments did not strike at the crowd. Moving to the supports below the balcony box they took up positions at the support beams. Immediately Krystal paled as she realized what was about to happen.
“Everyone! Get away! He's about to-!” But there was neither time nor heed for her warning. With blasts of concentrated air, the flutes quickly chewed through the wooden pillars. Ominously the floor groaned as angry cracks resounded through the hall. Turning to the princesses, the woman could only give one last bit of advice, “Hang on!” With that, the floor dropped away.
Krystal's world became a blur as the sounds of screams and splintering wood surrounded her. Dazed, she looked up from her final resting place half-buried beneath what used to be the balcony. Vaguely, she felt something wet under her right hand, and as she brought her crimson stained hand in front of her she began to panic. Twisting her head to the side she spotted a green furred hoof poking out of the wreckage, it's owner the apparent source of the blood on the woman's hand.
“Luna! Twilight!” she called out frantically. In front of her, still upon the stage she spotted the insane pony, laughing at the carnage and pain he was inflicting. To her relief, she also saw survivors moaning around her, and uninjured ponies pressed against the walls. Though Krystal's own blood began to boil in her veins, she feared losing control of her powers. She knew full well that she herself would become as much a threat to the ponies, if she unleashed the beast of anger that clawed at her heart.
“Stop it!” Krystal's gaze was drawn to a gray mare who was crying over the still writhing mare on the stage. “Pitchworthy, let her go!”
The unicorn stopped his laughter as he approached the mare in a slow stalking manner. “Octavia. So there you are. Isn't it grand? I must admit it is a little outside my usual performance, but it just comes so easily to me!”
Octavia took a step back, her voice quivering in fear. “P-performance? Pitchworthy you are hurting ponies! My friends!”
“Hurting?” The insane pony smiled as his voice dripped cruel venom, “No Octavia, I'm not just hurting them. I'm killing them. ” Grabbing a nearby violin he began to pluck idly at the strings. “I'm cutting them out of your life. Then, I will take you in your moment of grief, and break you. Then we will be such a loving couple don't you think?” With that, he threw aside the violin and began to approach the trembling mare.
Out of Krystal's sight, Luna freed herself of the wreckage. Spotting Twilight trying to pull herself free, Luna's horn flared as she magically flung the impeding debris aside. “Twilight, are you alright?”
The alicorn coughed as she shakily stood up, “I-I think so.” Suddenly her eyes shot open, “Where is Princess Celestia and the others?”
“Over here!” a voice called out. The captain stood coughing when they looked for its source. Both princesses moved quickly towards the voice. They found Snow Bloom standing defensively over the unconscious form Princess Celestia.
Luna's eyes hardened as she looked upon her sister's form. Turning her gaze to the one responsible she snorted hard. “Captain, take mine sister, along with Twilight, and flee this place. But... leave thine sword, so that I might smite the fool responsible for this travesty!”
As she spoke Luna's form shifted, Twilight gasped as the princess' form took a familiar form she had only seen once before. The identity the young princess had first met Luna in. Luna, former exiled Princess of the Moon, had once again taken the form of Nightmare Moon.
Sensing the hesitation in the other ponies, Luna turned her head towards them to look them both in the eyes in turn. Though her form had shifted to a larger and darker mare, her eyes remained as they were, though tinted with anger. “I gave thee your orders! Make haste!”
That snapped the two out of their respective dazes. Captain Snow Bloom drew her sword and passed it to the dark princess as Twilight move beside her mentor. As Snow Bloom came close, the purple alicorn closed her eyes and with a flare of her horn and a flash of light, all three were gone. With a nod the remaining pony turned back towards the stage, and walked boldly forward, her borrowed blade at the ready.
“Halt fiend! Thine treachery ends now!” Luna declared loudly. Pitchworthy stopped from where he was slowly cornering Octavia. Turning, he narrowed his eyes as his many flutes drifted to the ready above him. Posed to strike down the mare that dared disturb him.
His eyes widened in surprise though as he beheld his challenger. “Ah, Princess Luna! How good of you to have survived. Tell me, where is your sister? Her, and that Twilight bitch ?”
“Out of your reach, knave!” Luna exclaimed loudly. She then snarled viciously, “And I will attend to thee with haste, before any more harm comes to mine subjects!”
Pitchworthy chuckled, “Oh you will? Pity about your sister, I wanted to demonstrate personally the power I was given.” He shook his head sadly, before breaking into a toothy grin, “But I suppose I will just have to suffice with—” He stomped a hoof and his tone turned absolutely venomous. “Sending her your head. ”
Luna barely dodged as two flutes lashed out again like spears. With a sweep of her blade the steel shattered the wooden instruments. Her victory was short lived, as Pitchworthy sent six more to replace them. With quick precise moments she managed to take out four more, but had to dodge as the last two imbedded themselves into the floor Luna had once stood on.
Spotting one of her dead guards nearby, she magically snatched his sword. Now armed with two blades, she was able to fend off the angry swarm of flutes that had begun to buzz around her. Pitchworthy began to attack with the same lethal blasts of air he had used to collapse the balcony's supports with. The invisible blasts of air tore into the floor, driving Luna's defense to its limit.
Searching her surroundings, the princess spotted two more swords and added them to her arsenal, bringing the quartet of blades to her defense. In a dance of steel she managed to finally turn the battle in her favor. Or so she thought. Because all throughout the deadly dance she had been performing the unicorn had never lost his smile, his insane and bloodthirsty smile.
“Very good Princess!” Pitchworthy called out praisingly. “I think you might actually win if you had kept this up.” He stepped forward slightly as he spoke, “That is, if I didn't have so many choices to choose from for ending your reign!” When he finished, cellos, trumpets, violins, and other instruments began to float into the air.
“How did thou gain such power?” Luna mumbled darkly to herself. With the sound of strings snapping, two violins began to whip at the swordspony. The near-invisible strings slipped through her defenses to rake across the princess' flank, drawing blood with shallow cuts.
As Krystal watched Luna fight, she began to worry. She hoped that the princess would be able to fight off Pitchworthy by herself. Hoped she herself would not have to draw upon her curse.
But as the insane unicorn's offense dragged on, the woman began to growl, low and menacing. She had just began to focus on her power, to shift the wreckage that pinned her, when she spotted a glint on Pitchworthy's neck. The very sight of it caused her blood to freeze and her breath to still. The pony was wearing His symbol. The same symbol that the dead man had worn across his chest over a hundred years ago. Suddenly her arms went limp as she was thrust back into that barn, back with Him . Back into a nightmare that would never leave her.

He struggled at the chains, “Oh don't you worry, love. I've been doing this for some time now.” The man said with a cruel chuckle. In his hands, the sickle caught the lantern's light as he swaggered over to the barn wall.
The man grabbed his younger sister by the hair, “See, it's like this. The best way to get people to be who you want them to be? Easier then you think actually.” Lightly, he pushed the sickle up to her neck. It's curved blade like a murderous choker. “Just have to cut the strings that bind them as they were. Gotta start with a clean slate.”

Luna struggled to keep up with the assortment of attacks that now lashed down upon her. Steadily, she was losing ground, and deep within she knew that the murderous pony was holding back. She didn't fear for her life though, but for the lives that still held in this now hellish mockery of a concert hall.

”Call to your brother,” the man urged his sister. “Call to him for help, or curse him for your predicament. It's his fault that you are about to die, after all.

As Luna dodged a flute aimed for her heart, she found a hoof entangled by a violin's stings. With a jerk they tightened enough to dig into her flesh, and painfully pull it to the side. Pitchworthy used the momentary distraction to have four horns collide with the princess's blades; rendering them useless to her. In an instant, it was over, and Luna was suspended by her legs, the painful wires cutting into them in front of the stage.

His sister remained quiet, only taking the time to spit in the man's eye. Unfazed, the man simply began to chuckle, as he drew back the blade. Looking her brother in the eyes, she opened her mouth to say something. But at that instant, the blade whistled through the air.

“Well that was fun, Princess.” Pitchworthy mockingly gloated. “But I’m afraid this performance is due for a curtain call. But don't worry, I'm sure plenty of ponies will be joining you shortly.” With that a single flute came to the ready, aimed at the captured alicorn's heart.

He had turned his head at the last instant, only hearing the wretchedly familiar sound of metal on bone. He felt something hit his foot and reflexively looked down. Down into his sister's eyes.

“Nooo!” with a scream of pain, anger, hate, and sorrow, Krystal threw aside all self control. With an explosion of wood, the wreckage on top of her was thrown aside as easily as pieces of styrofoam. Raising her still blood covered hand, she bent her power to draw the blood to her palm. Then like a bullet from a gun, the blood shot forward and struck Luna in the back. Blindingly quick, it slithered around to her chest, hardening into a plate just an instant before the flute struck true.
Pitchworthy sputtered as the flute shattered to splinters harmlessly. He focused his gaze behind his captive, to the glowering woman. “Who are you?” he demanded loudly.
Silently, the woman strode forward, drawing her pocketknife from the pocket she stored it in, and unfolded the blade. Pitchworthy just laughed when he saw the tiny bit of steel in her hand. Even more so when she stopped halfway up the hall.
“Do you really think you can stop me with that pathetic thing? You really think you could stand up to my power with-” the woman's voice cut him off. It was as cold and hard, and Luna tried to twist in her bonds to be sure it was really her friend who spoke.
“Shut up. You have no power. You don't even know the concept of it,” Krystal interrupted him. She then began to laugh. A deep, powerful laugh that chilled the witnessing ponies' blood to their cores. It was like hearing death herself, if she were to laugh at your misfortune. “You are like a gnat, flying in the face of your betters. So tell me, gnat, what power do you think you hold?”
Pitchworthy fought himself to not take a step back. Overriding the flaring instincts in his blood. “I have power! I have the Princess. I have the mare I want! I have my plaything, to do with I see fit! I have-”
“You have nothing !” the woman's voice shot back. She took a menacing step forward, “You think you have power, because you took a few insignificant lives? Like stepping on worms upon the sidewalk?” She laughed again, not quite as coldly this time, “Any dumb animal can kill, gnat. But I? I am a mistress of death.” Krystal pointed a finger at herself as she finished, “Death makes me stronger. For as my enemies fall by my hand, I gain power from within their veins. In the fields of battle, I am as a goddess!”
With that, she plunged the knife into her right hand, drawing the blade deeply across her palm. Raising her hand, with its bloodless wound, she took firm hold of the curse that ran within her, and the power that came with it. “Let me show you why only fools spill blood around my kind!”
Luna gazed in shock, as in front of her, the previously spilled blood began to rise slowly into the air. As puddles of the crimson liquid began to spiral through the air, moving past her, to where she assumed Krystal was. All around the hall, blood that had been spilled began to gravitate towards the woman's hand. It condensed into a ball of scarlet, growing steadily to encompass her hand.
“You think moving a little blood will scare me?” the unicorn called out defiantly. Again, his instruments moved to the ready, poised to strike down the woman that had just challenged him. He was sure in his mind that he would beat her, just as he beat Luna. He ignored that his heart feared differently.
As the last drops of blood condensed into the ball, Krystal first began to draw from it to sate her hunger. Then, the woman clutched her hand into a fist that she slowly pulled free of the floating orb. A single crimson saber was clutched in her hand, which instantly darkened as the blood dried and formed into a fine edge on the blade.
“W-what are you?” Pitchworthy asked, clearly on the edge of panicking.
In response, the woman simply blurred. A heartbeat later, Luna fell to the floor, the cords and strings that had held her captive, still hanging from bloodied hooves. She simply walked forward, interposing herself between the stallion and Luna. Slowly, Krystal brought her crimson blade before her, assuming her stance. Just as slowly, a cruel smile began to spread across her face.
“My dear gnat, I am simply beyond you. If the extent of your power is to fling wood around, then I have nothing to fear from you,” the woman threw her head back, laughing loud and cruelly at Pitchworthy. He ground his teeth in anger as his horn flared bright enough to cast shadows about the room.
“Nopony laughs at me! Not anymore !” he drew on every ounce of his power, as instruments, pieces of wood, even the discarded swords floated into the air. The surviving ponies, who still huddled in the corners of the hall, pushed back in fear at the amount of power the murderous pony was bringing to bear. Even Luna gasped, turning a worried look to the woman she did not know what to think of anymore.
For a single instant, nothing moved, all eyes were on the bipedal creature who had not lost her smug look. She gazed into Pitchworthy's eyes and silently challenged him to show his worst. Roaring bestially, he responded as his horn flared once again. With a roar, Pitchworthy brought his fury to bear on the woman. The sound the swarm generated was akin to a thousand arrows loosed simultaneously.
Krystal never moved. That would be what the ponies who witnessed what came next would claim. The creature many of them had never seen before, and had only heard in gossip, simply stood there as her apparent doom approached. But then something odd would happen, as every threat came close to striking her, it would be deflected or suddenly seem to be divide into two. Many would describe it as if a wall were around the strange creature.
But Luna, being so close, knew differently. She could see the woman's sword arm twitching, and realized exactly what Krystal was doing. In shock, she watched her arm move so quickly that after every strike would return to where it began. Krystal... was showing off!
Quickly, Pitchworthy's attack was ended, and the broken pieces of his assault rained down around Krystal and Luna ineffectively. The stallion took a step back in almost complete fear, and as he lost his focus, the flute still torturing Vinyl Scratch clattered to the stage's floor. He didn't even register Octavia, as she ran to her friend and cradled her head.
“W-what are you?” Pitchworthy whispered hoarsely. “You...you can't be real. What are you? ”
The woman began to walk forward as she sneered, “Like I said, I am beyond you, little gnat. That is all you need to take with you to the grave.” Pitchworthy turned to run but found the crimson orb blocking his path. A silent, morbid sentinel that quietly hung there in front of him. “But before I kill you, I'm going to give you a choice.”
“A-a choice?” he stammered, eyes wide as he searched desperately for a way out.
As the woman chuckled deeply, the ponies cowering around the room huddled further together in terror. “Well, yes. See, I can make your death quick, or I can take my time ripping the life from your bones. But either way you will tell me where you came upon your... accessory there,” she pointed to the talisman around Pitchworthy's neck.
“A... it was a mare! This white mare just showed up and gave it to me!” Pitchworthy cried out desperately. Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted the flute that lay by Vinyl. He knew he was going to die, but if he was then he had one last thing he wanted to do.
Krystal quirked an eyebrow, “A mare? What do you mean-”
Pitchworthy's horn flared, as the flute flew into the air. It aimed itself for the unconscious Vinyl's chest, which was covered by Octavia's own body. Just before he could propel it forward though, his magic cut out; Mostly due to his horn being severed by Krystal's blade.
As his horn clattered to the stage, along with the lifeless flute, Pitchworthy began to scream in pain. Incoherently, he began to curse all who were present. In a blind rage, leaped for the two mares he hated most in the world. Fully intent to smash life from them with his hooves.
He had barely made it into the air, before being intercepted by Krystal's orb of blood. Like a specter of death, it whisked him through the air and dragged him, still screaming, through the curtains. As he disappeared from view, he suddenly gave one last bloodcurdling scream of pain, before suddenly going silent.
It was silent as death in the hall, at that point. Luna simply gaped at the being who stood on the stage, looking down upon the princess with a cruel expression on her face. Snarling, Luna began to raise a broken blade before her, to which Krystal merely looked amused.
“Really, Luna? I go through all the trouble of saving your ass, and you plan to throw it away?” She clicked her tongue once, as she waved a finger disapprovingly, “Now, why would you want to do that?”
“You killed him!” Luna yelled out in righteous anger.
“Yes. Yes I did.” Krystal nodded simply, “And your point is... what? As I recall, you had fully intended to do the same.”
“Yes, but what you did, that... that wasn't a fight! You played with him! There was no honor in-.” she was cut off as Krystal seemed to blur again, only to reappear in front of her.
“Listen well, Princess .” Krystal commanded in a low voice, “There is no such thing as honor. There is not a thing called valor. There is no fairness. There are no rules. No... there is truly nothing of the sort. So, don't you dare lecture me otherwise. In the universe, there are simply those who have the power, and those who do not. That pony thought he had power to break others, and for his impudence... I merely broke him .”
“... You are more of a monster then he was,” Luna quietly declared. Krystal just gave a cruel smile at that.
“Perhaps, but I'm alive, and he is dead. Monster or not, I got what I wanted,” she stooped down to pick up Luna. “Now to get you to-.”
Luna batted Krystal's arms away with a hoof as she added quietly, “You will not touch me.”
Krystal snarled and drew back a hand, with full intent to knock some proper respect into the pony. But as she drew back her hand, she hesitated. A series of emotions played across her face as she tried to bring the offending hand forward a few times, but seemingly couldn't make it budge. Finally she gave a scream and clutched her head, collapsing to her knees as she began to rock back and forth. Her eyes were wide with shock.
At that instant, a banging of doors were heard backstage, as Captain Snow Bloom's commanding voice barked out orders, “All right, Gemheart start getting ponies out of here! Thunder... Sweet Celestia... what happened back here?!”
A few wrenching sounds later guards began to appear from backstage, many looking rather pale. Upon seeing the injured ponies around the hall, they moved quickly to attend to their needs. Snow Bloom herself walked out, only looking slightly green from what she saw behind the curtains. Spotting the princess, she moved forward to give her report.
“Princess Luna, Princess Twilight sent me back to help. But apparently...”
Luna nodded once as she explained the situation, “Yes, Pitchworthy has already been dealt with. Though it seems we might have a new problem.” She focused her gaze coldly on Krystal.
Snow Bloom simply looked in confusion between the two, “Do you wish for me to take her into custody?”
“No.” Luna sighed, “I will attend to her myself. Captain I want you to get everypony out and get treatment for the injured.”
“As you wish, Prin-” With a flash the two were gone, “-cess.” Captain Snow Bloom simply shook her head. She could make sense of it all later, for now she had her orders. “Thunder Prism! Get those doors cleared! We are not taking anypony backstage, understood?”

Krystal looked around in slightly dazed puzzlement as the two appeared atop a cliff. To her left, she could see Canterlot shine below her, and to her right she could see Luna gazing down on her. The princess had reverted back to her previous appearance. Still, she studied the woman with guarded eyes as her horn glowed softly in the darkness. Krystal had no doubt that the princess was prepared in case her guest should act up again.
For a long moment, the two just stared at each other, studying the other's face in the light of the full moon that shone beautifully above. Krystal didn't know what to say, she knew what she had done. What she had been prepared to do , and the very thought turned her stomach. It reminded her too much of the man from the barn.
“I'm sorry,” Krystal finally admitted softly, breaking the silence. “I'm sorry you had to see that, that I lost control over... myself like that.”
Luna tilted her head at the apology, “That does not explain your actions, nor does it give me reassurance that you will not repeat your actions. What exactly did I witness, this night?”
With a sigh the woman looked up at the moon, “Princess, over a century ago, I was given a curse. With this curse, I will never age, I can never get sick, I can heal from just about any wound, and I have the power to turn the blood that's shed in battle to the advantage of myself and those I choose to ally with.”
“Perhaps I am a bit slow, Krystal, but that does not sound like a curse.” Luna stated flatly.
The woman just gave a halfhearted snort. “Well, there are a few catches. The first being, my powers only work in darkness, or at night. But by far the worst, is that they erode who I am, if I use them too much.”
“What do you mean they, 'erode who you are'?” Luna narrowed her eyes, “What exactly does that mean?”
“It means...” Krystal sighed softly and forced herself to continue, “It means that I lose my inhibitions. I lose my morals. I lose everything that holds me back from becoming a bloodthirsty monster. A monster that wouldn't think twice about killing for what she wants. Who doesn't care about anything but herself. Tonight I... I lost control, and became that monster.”
Luna shook her head, “Then... why did you protect me? Why did you save those two mares on the stage, if you had lost control and had become such a beast?”
Krystal looked Luna straight in the eyes, “I don't know. That is the only time that I have ever protected someone when that far gone . But I couldn't hurt you, and it was you specifically. That much I do know.”
Luna walked over to the edge of the cliff, and gazed upon her city. She posed a simple question, “Do you have control now? Will this happen again?” The woman sighed and looked away.
“What can I say Princess? What could I possibly say that you would believe?” Krystal admitted morosely. She sat down from where she stood, hugging her knees. “As I keep my powers closer to doing what 'normal' people do, I keep far more control over myself. Summoning blades, making big balls of blood, pushing my physical limits too far; those are the things that drive control from me, and I become the beast. After a century, I know very well what those limits are, tonight... Tonight was a special case. Seeing you about to be hurt...”
Luna nodded, “Indeed, tonight was not normal for anypony. I do thank you for saving me, even if your... methods... were a bit extreme.” Luna's horn lost its glow, and out of sight Krystal could hear things hitting the ground in the darkness. “But one final thing. Of what significance did that talisman have?”
Krystal's breath froze in her chest, after a long moment she sighed once more. “The man who gave me my curse. He wore it across his chest. I have not seen that symbol in over a hundred years. And unless it is common here in Equestria...”
“It is not.” Luna stated plainly.
“...Then I don't know why he had it. I suppose it could just be a coincidence. But that pony, and man, both took the same pleasure in killing others. I don't know if that is significant in itself or not.”
Luna was silent at that point, and Krystal just sat in the darkness. She was prepared to run, to disappear into the darkness, if needed. Though a part of her hoped that the pony princess' trust had not been completely shattered. That the actions she had taken, even if Krystal was not herself, earned at least some small goodwill.
“Krystal Smith, I have made a decision,” Luna announced quietly. Luna turned to regard Krystal neutrally, “Despite your, rather extreme measures, those who could be saved in the hall, were. For that, you will still walk free. But you are still an unknown, and possibly dangerous to every pony in my kingdom. Therefore, if you are not in your room you will be escorted by guards in the day, and by myself at night. Until such time as I feel it is no longer necessary. Understood?”
Krystal nodded, disturbed at the extent of relief she felt, “That is more than fair, Princess. I would do the same, if our situation was reversed.” She caught a glimmer off one of the princess's hooves, “Perhaps we should have your wounds attended to?”
Luna nodded as she walked over to Krystal. With another flash they stood in the castle's throne room. As the princess began to walk, the woman kept close to her side, tensed and ready to be able to assist Luna should she need it.
As they walked down a hallway, one final question came forward from Krystal, “Princess, why did you even talk to me? You knew I was a threat, and yet you listened to my story... and spared me. Why?”
Luna gave a smug smirk to her companion. “Because Krystal, I knew you were incapable of truly hurting me.”
Krystal just raised an eyebrow before beginning to laugh jovially, “That's pretty bold, Princess. But I respect and thank you for your trust.” After a few steps she asked one more question, “So, does that mean we are good?”
The Princess of the Moon shook her head dejectedly as she responded, “No Krystal, it does not.” She then smiled slightly before adding, “But... we are better.” With shared grins, the two continued to the castle's infirmary.

Ironpaw looked over the town of Ponyville. In the darkness, he could see the streets clear of any patrolling guards or other ponies. Off to the side, he saw a shadow detach itself from the surroundings to move towards his position.
“The guards have taken to the local guardhouse. Apparently the something has happened to the Princesses in Canterlot.” Bloodshadow reported quickly
Ironpaw nodded once, “It seems our Alpha's intuition was correct.” Turning he faced the two packs, six wolves each, that accompanied him behind their enemies' lines.
Ironpaw began quickly, “Tonight is a special night.” He continued, his voice rising to a fever pitch, “A thousand years ago, we incurred the ponies' wrath, banished to the frozen mountains of the north. We all know this tale, and we all feel it in our hunger. We all see it in the eyes of our starving cubs. We all hear it in the cries of families, as starvation or cold takes another loved one from our dens.”
He paused, looking them each in the eyes in turn, “But tonight, we have an opportunity to visit some of that same pain upon the ponies, who have lands and prey far more rich than they deserve. Tonight, if we succeed, our bellies will be full and our cubs' futures will be assured. I tell you this, so that you know what is at stake. For whom you hunt this night.”
Turning his gaze back to Ponyville, Ironpaw threw his head back and let out a long howl. At this signal, the packs burst forward towards the town sleeping town of Ponyville.
“Tonight, we show the ponies who the prey truly is. For tonight, is a special night.”
