Desperate Measures
Around Equestria, things were starting to become bleak. A series of poor investments by a small number of the most highly regarded ponies working for the treasury had resulted in much of the kingdom’s wealth disappearing nearly overnight. While that alone would have been devastating, the problem was compounded as ordinary working ponies turned to try out the latest craze from over the sea in the gryphon lands – gambling.
Initially played just between migrant gryphon workers looking for a taste of home, the idea of betting money on activities and games of chance quickly took off with the pony population, especially among those who couldn’t really afford it. It provided stimulation and the lure of winning big, though many could see that nopony actually did.
While official word from the palace was that a solution would be found and lives would be restored, it didn’t help the ponies who were struggling now. As a result of spiralling debt, ponies had to alter their spending habits, and as always in a crisis, it was the luxuries of life that were the first to go.
In the rapidly developing town of Ponyville, this meant that it was the Ponyville Day Spa that was suffering the most. Ponies just didn’t have the bits to spare to go and get themselves pampered, and when they did, they were reluctant to spend them on something a frivolous as getting one’s mane redone. It was getting so bad that the twin sisters who owned and ran the spa were having to consider taking drastic action or close the spa forever.
Locked in her office at the back of the spa, the younger of the twins, Lotus Blossom was bent over her desk. Her head was down and her forehead creased in concentration. Before her was the full spread of accounts for the spa’s operations and more importantly for her, an official reply from the bank in regards to her application to extend out a line of credit to see them through this rough patch. Lotus had always been the more level headed of the two; her sister, Aloe Blossom was a good and kind pony, but she had no business savvy. Her skills lay on the actual massage table itself.
Right now, Lotus was trying to find some way to reduce their operating expenditure. The spa was haemorrhaging bits. The cost of keeping heated water and fresh purified mud was enormous, and most of the facial creams and massage oils that they offered had very strict use-by dates, besides being very expensive. Unless something came through their doors soon, they were going to have to waste vast portions of their inventory and start over from scratch, something she was sure they couldn’t afford.
With a sigh, Lotus looked over her outgoing costs. Hundreds of small ledger marks and receipts filled her tray. By contrast, the pile representing income was far smaller, comprising mostly just small fare such as mane trimmings or touch ups. The only really big boost they had gotten since the hardship had started was that their most valued client, miss Rarity had continued her regular treatments. Lotus was sure that if miss Rarity hadn’t chosen to support them, they would have had to have closed down by now.
Right now, all of Lotus’s hopes were focused on the unopened letter that she had gotten from the bank earlier in the day. She had wanted to keep it until she had had one final look over their expenses, so as to be sure that they were doing all they could to save money.
With a trembling blue coated hoof, Lotus picked up the letter and looked at it. The seal of the Royal Canterlot Bank on the back of it marked it as genuine and the formal script of the address gave it a stern appearance. It was clear that this was not a casual letter, but that it contained something of great importance; something that would either save or ruin them.
Lotus broke the seal and pulled out the letter. It wasn’t overly long, and it reeked of stern formality. The hoofwriting was precise and immaculate. Somepony had taken a lot of time writing this, despite its brevity.

Given the current financial atmosphere, loans are very rarely being approved at the moment, and only for ventures that the bank deems to be sound. Examination of your current financial records has indicated that while your business is operating at its lowest possible expenditure, it is still loosing money at a rapid rate. Canterlot Bank has therefore decided against both extending your current line of credit or loaning you additional finances. We must also ask that you take whatever steps may be required for you to repay the amount that is currently owed. This balance will be provided to you on a separate letter. The statement should have arrived in tandem with this missive.

Lotus read the letter twice more, just to make sure that she hadn’t misread anything. There was no mistake though. That piece of paper, while small, had been the last piece of hope that she had for the continued survival of their beloved spa. She had hoped that the bank would be willing to help them; she had never been late with a payment before, and she had been banking with them her entire life, or at least as much of it as she could since she and her sister had emigrated from Germaney. Now, not only was the bank not going to loan them additional bits to keep themselves afloat, it was insisting that they repay back their current loan. If they had the bits to do that, Lotus reasoned, then they wouldn’t be asking for more in the first place.
Slumping in her chair, Lotus put the letter and the expenses account into the drawer of her desk and locked it up tight. She didn’t want Aloe, or their visiting cousin, Vera to know about this just yet. It would only cause Aloe worry right now, and Vera was here on a work placement, so it shouldn’t have to be her burden. Lotus would tell them if and when it either became unavoidable or a solution was found.
Getting to her hooves, Lotus dragged herself out of the office and into the main area of the spa. The warm smells of all their expensive perfumes and oils wafted through the air, giving everything a pleasant scent. Over in one corner, her sister, Aloe was folding towels into stacks for use once their workday started. Aloe was Lotus’s best friend as well as being her sister. Her bright pink coat and blue mane was the polar opposite of Lotus’s own. The two of them have come to Equestria proper from the independent nation of Germaney some years ago in search of a better life, and they had found that here. Ponyville had been welcoming to them, and had appreciated much of what they had to offer.
Aloe looked up as she entered and gave Lotus a smile. Lotus had made sure not to tell her older twin exactly how bad a situation they were in. She knew that they were in difficulties, but that was all; Aloe trusted Lotus to look after the business side of things, and that made the idea of having to tell her all the more heart breaking. It would mean that Lotus had failed in her sister’s trust.
On the other side of the spa, currently working to clean out one of the mud baths was Vera. Vera was Aloe and Lotus’s cousin, on a working vacation from her family back in Germaney. After getting the same lotus flower cutie mark as Aloe and Lotus had, Vera had expressed interest in following them out to Equestria to learn about their trade. She had plans to open her own massaging parlour and day spa back home and wanted to learn everything she could. Within a few days of her having arrived, Aloe had recut her mane to match theirs, and given her a jewel studded collar for her to wear as a symbol of her joining the family. Since then, she had been a hard worker and some ponies that had walked into the spa had even remarked that they didn’t know that Aloe and Lotus were triplets.
Lotus wasn’t sure what she was going to tell either of them. They all had their hearts set on this place and to lose it would be devastating; they had nowhere else to go. ‘Still,’ Lotus thought, ‘there is no reason to worry them just yet.’ Something may come up to save them, or the bank may change its mind. Moving over to the reception counter, Lotus prepared herself for another day at work. Hopefully there would be plenty of it today.
The work day wound down as Celestia’s sun gave way to Luna’s moon. Aloe showed the last few customers out of the lobby and back into the darkening twilight. Lotus began checking over their scheduled appointments for the next day, looking to see what services had been booked and would need to be prepped now, and what could just be stored away to save on money. Tomorrow they had their weekly session with miss Rarity and Fluttershy. Aloe would need to prepare mud masks, seaweed baths and sharpen the horn filer
Preparations went smoothly. The twins had been doing this long enough that they each knew which duties should be done by which pony and the order in which they had to be done. Vera was still getting the order down, but she was a good help. Her light purple mane bouncing as she moved from station to station, assisting with whatever needed to be done.
Soon, the spa was clean and ready for another day of service. With that done, the trio of attendants retreated to the back section of the spa, where a few rooms that were marked as ‘employees only’ served as their living space. It was small, but comfortable enough. A few beds, a basic but functional kitchen and a table with enough chairs to seat them all were all that they really needed. Several bookshelves were crammed full of stories. Aloe liked to read when she wasn’t working, though Lotus preferred to tinker with her small selection of musical instruments. She wasn’t very good, but it relaxed her after a hard day.
Entering their living space, Vera instantly asked, “Wann wird das Abendessen fertig sein?“ switching to their native tongue without any apparent hesitation, or perhaps even realising it.
Lotus gave her a quick shake of her head. “Vera, you agreed to practice your Equestrian while you were here. Few ponies understand Germane in this part of the world.” It was quite true. Only two ponies in town appeared to have any kind of understanding of their language. Twilight Sparkle could converse in it nearly fluently, something that Lotus attributed to her massive library of books and first class education. The other pony was Twilight’s friend, Applejack. She could only say a few phrases; enough to introduce herself, make basic small talk, etc. She once mentioned that she had a great uncle living in Germaney and had spent a summer there when she was young.
Vera looked apologetic. “I-I’m sorry,” she said, switching back to Equestrian. “When is dinner going to be ready?” Vera spoke perfect Equestrian; it was standard practice at schools, even those outside of Equestria. With Equestria being the largest political power out of all the kingdoms, due in no small part to it being the home of the most powerful beings in existence – the immortal alicorn sisters, it was natural that its language become the dominant trade language. All other races – the gryphons, changelings, minotaurs and dragons, as well as the other ungulate species could understand Equestrian, even if they didn’t speak it often.
“Soon,” Aloe called out, already at work in the kitchen. She was the best cook out of all of them, so it often fell to her to prepare meals. “We have noodles with boiled carrots, celery, and squash along with a crisp snow-pea salad. Should be ready in about half an hour, so don’t go filling up on anything.”
While Aloe was preparing the food, Vera heard a tingle at the door, and went out to investigate. They were closed for the night, so she wasn’t sure as to who it could be now. She came back out into the main area of the spa to find the grey pegasus mare who acted as the town’s mail carrier putting something down on the front desk. It looked like a letter.
“Whoops, sorry. I didn’t mean to disturb you,” she said as she put the letter down. “This was supposed to be delivered this morning, but it got mixed up with another package. I came around specially to drop it off; it looks important, so I figured you wanted it right away.” With a blink of her misaligned eyes, the mail carrier handed the letter over to Vera and flew back out of the open door. Vera watched her go before walking up to the door and making sure that it was locked properly. Many of their products were more valuable then gems, and it would not do to have somepony rob them in the middle of the night. Even in a town as trustworthy as Ponyville, crime was not unheard of.
Turning to head back into the kitchen area, Vera stopped to examine the letter in her hoof. It had words like ‘Priority: Urgent’ and ‘Now due’ printed on it, and it was marked with a return address of somewhere in Canterlot. Vera didn’t know who it was from, as she had never stepped hoof in the capital of Equestria; she had never had a reason to. Curiosity overtook her and she decided to take a look. Lotus had been showing her a bit about the administration side of running a spa and she wanted to help out if she could.
Opening the seal, Vera pulled the letter out and had a glace over it. At first is just looked like a series of random numbers with a few words that she didn’t recognise next to them. Reading more closely over it though, she noticed several words that stood out; namely those of ‘balance due’ and ‘payable immediately’. Beside those words was a significant sum of bits. Vera quickly realised that this letter was a balance sheet from whoever had loaned Aloe and Lotus bits so that they could start this spa up, and from the sounds of things, they were wanting to be paid the remainder of the loan as soon as possible.
Vera silently cursed herself for being curious. This had been none of her business, but now she felt obligated to mention it. She slowly moved back in through the spa, dodging the stacks of towels and massaging tables to reach the back rooms. As she reached the door, she paused and thought about what she was going to say. She could say nothing, and just hand Lotus the letter, but it was clear from the broken seal that she had gone though the letter. She had to ask and hope that Lotus was already well on top of it. It could be that she had enough money stashed away to pay off the loan in full and that she was worried about nothing.
Opening the door, Vera saw that Aloe and joined Lotus at the table. A boiling pot of water was on the stove and Vera could smell the vegetables beginning to cook in it. Aloe looked up at her as she entered, smiling as she chopped up some snow-peas for the salad. Lotus gave her a look and her face froze as she noticed the official sealed letter in Vera’s hoof.
“Where did you get that?” she asked.
“The mailmare dropped it off just a moment ago; she said that it was meant to be delivered this morning.” She decided to take the plunge on this. Better to get a straight answer one way or the other. “Are we in debt, Lotus?” she dropped the letter onto the table and Lotus snatched it up, scanning the document quickly before dropping it back to the table and leaning back heavily in her chair.
Aloe looked concerned. She hadn’t seen her sister act like that for a long time, not since they first took out a loan to buy the spa. “Sister, is something wrong. You told me that we were doing well.”
Lotus’s face said it all; there was no point in skirting the truth anymore. “I had wanted to spare you both from this for as long as I could, but it seems that time is over. Yes, Vera, we are in significant debt.” She indicated the letter on the table. “Two days ago, I asked the bank for an extension of our loan, but I was refused. Not only that, they want up to pay back what we already owe as soon as we can. All up, we still owe about 20,000 bits and right now we have about half of that as liquid capital. Even if we save every bit that comes through our door this next month, and cancel all but the most essential of all supplies, we will still come up short by about 5,000 bits.” She turned to face Aloe, her eyes beginning to water. “I had hoped that something would come along to save up, but at the end of this month, the bank is going to take ownership of the spa. I’m so sorry, Aloe. I’ve failed you.”
Aloe put her hooves up to her mouth in shock, her salad all but forgotten. “Why? Why didn’t you tell me, Lotus?” she asked. “If I had known, maybe I could have helped.”
Lotus cringed at her question. “Because I didn’t want you to worry. Now I need to think of a way to fix this, before it is too late.”
“No,” Vera said, startling both of them. “We need to think of a way to fix this. Aloe and I are in this as well. We all need to come up with a solution and make some bits quickly.” Aloe nodded in agreement.
“So what can we do?” Vera asked. “Could we try offering discounts to attract more ponies?”
Lotus shook her head. “No, we are already charging the absolute minimum. Any lower and we won’t even break even.”
“Then we need to offer something else, something that will make this place a curiosity again, something that will attract ponies and will make them voluntarily choose a more expensive option.”
Aloe clapped her hooves together a few times. “That would be a great idea, Vera, but we don’t have anything that we could use for that. Lotus and I already do just about everything that can be done in a spa, and we don’t have time or the bits to try and add in something totally new.”
“I actually have an idea about that, something that I have been meaning to talk to both of you about. You may not like it, but I want both of you to promise to hear me out about this, ok?” Vera looked a little unsure about what she was proposing, but Aloe and Lotus both nodded. Right now, any idea was better than none.
Vera got up from the table and moved off to her bedroom. Truth be told, it was really just a supply closet that had been cleaned out for her. It still smelled strongly of Jasmine and Lilacs and Vera didn’t mind the cramped space; she didn’t spend much time in here apart from sleeping anyway. Reaching her bed, she grabbed a hard backed book that she had been keeping under her mattress and returned to the kitchen.
Lotus tried to get a look at what Vera had grabbed, but she couldn’t make out much. It looked like a book of some sort, something that Vera must have brought with her or borrowed from the town library. It certainly wasn’t one of theirs.
“What’s that?” she asked as Vera sat back down.
Vera blushed as she held up the book that she had been hiding under her bed. Lotus looked at the cover. It showed two mares in what appeared to be VERY suggestive poses. The book’s title was Sensual massage – a complete guide to pleasing your partner. Lotus had seen books like that before. It detailed techniques that involved erotic massage and often included very invasive massages aimed at causing sexual release.
Vera gave the book to Lotus, who handled it as if it was a ticking time bomb. “Please, hear me out. We can’t cut expenses much further, so we need to generate more bits. –We need to offer something new, something that ponies cannot get anywhere else; something that will pull them in through our doors. I think that we should try out offering some of the services that this book describes. To tell you the truth, I had always planned to offer this when I opened my own spa, but I think that we may need it now.”
Aloe shook her head, “No, Vera. We cannot do this. We are not prostitutes, and we are not turning this spa into a brothel. We will find another way.”
Vera pointed at the book again. “I’m not suggesting that we have sex with our clients. This would be erotic massage, full release rub downs, touching only.”
“I can’t ask you to do this, Vera,” Lotus said, putting the book down.
“You’re not asking, I’m offering,” Vera said, sounding exasperated. Why couldn’t these two see that this was a good idea. Once word started to get around, ponies would be lining up to try out the new service. And it wasn’t like they were selling themselves; they wouldn’t be prostituting themselves out on the streets, like some two bit hooker.
“But, still…” Lotus continued.
“But, still nothing,” Vera interrupted. “I’m not saying that this is the only solution, but we should at least discuss it as an option. From the sounds of things, there isn’t much else that it open to us. We could try to get a loan from another bank, but that just shifts the issue. Tell you what; we will put it on the back burner for now, but I want both of you to give it some serious thought in case we can’t find something else.”
At the mention of ‘backburner’, Aloe jumped up and raced over to the boiling pot of water. She had totally forgotten about dinner, and it was nearly overcooked. Grabbing the pot off of the stove, she drained the vegetables and added them to the noodles that she had already prepared. Lotus moved over around the table and began to finish up preparing the side salad. Soon the mouth-watering smells of well prepared food filled the kitchen. Aloe loaded up three bowls of noodles onto a tray and carried it over to the table. Vera took her bowl and grabbed the pepper from off the table. She liked her food somewhat spicier than her cousins.
The three of them ate in near silence. Each of them was still considering what Vera had suggested. While it was a big step for them, they couldn’t deny that the idea had a certain lure to it. There were plenty of stallions out there in Ponyville who would jump at the idea of getting such a service, seeing it as a slightly less cheating that hiring an actual prostitute. Plus with no other competition, they could charge what they needed to.
Finally Aloe spoke up, “I suppose we could give Vera’s idea a try. Just to a select group of ponies who we know would be discreet, at least until we know if it is going to work or not.”
Vera smiled at her. “I knew you would come around to it. Don’t worry about this, I can handle the first couple of customers myself, just to give you two a sense of what it required so that you can decide if you want to go ahead at all.”
“No,” Lotus said, "We can’t let you do that. If we are going to do this, then we all are going to do this, as one family. But the problem is that I don’t know anything about this kind of massage; what to do, or how best to do it.”
“That won’t be a problem,” Vera said with a smile, “I can show you. We can go out into the main room and practice right now if you like.”
“But you are our cousin! Having sex with your family is morally wrong, the Princess has always said so,” Aloe said.
Vera held up a hoof. “Firstly, I never said anything about sex; this is purely an experiment, and will not go any further than touching. There is nothing wrong with touching, even foals do that; it’s a natural part of a ponies development. Secondly, the Princesses said that more so that stallions wouldn’t abuse their foals or get them pregnant. We can’t do that. We are just trying to make a pony feel good. Aloe, do you love your sister?
Aloe blushed, but swiftly nodded once, “Of course I love her. She is my twin sister.”
Vera continued, “Well, what if you would make her feel really good? Making another pony feel good is one of the best ways to express love. And besides, you could always just think of this as a really, really deep tissue massage.”
“I guess we could give it a shot. What’s the worst thing that could happen? We feel awkward for a little while and never speak of it again.”
“Great,” Vera said, a bit too brightly. Lotus though that she was enjoying this far too much, given the situation they were in. “I’ll go and get a few things ready; you two come out once you have finished eating.” She paused for a moment before speaking again, “Only if you are comfortable though, I don’t want you to feel forced into this. If you would rather, I can do this on my own and you can remain doing the regular services.”
Aloe and Lotus looked at each other and nodded once. “It’s just practice, right?” Lotus said. “It doesn’t mean anything unless we want it to.”
Aloe smiled sweetly at Vera, “We trust you, cousin, and you are right. We don’t have any other ideas, so we may as well try yours out. Nopony else has to know if we decide not to go ahead.”
Vera rushed forward and hugged her cousins. “You won’t regret this. I promise you, this will feel really good, and we will make enough bits to save this place from the bank.” She let go and trotted out into the main spa, humming to herself.
Aloe turned to face Lotus. “Are we really going to do this?” she asked.
“I don’t see any other viable option,” Lotus replied, “I’ve already expended every other possible solution. If Vera is right, then this might just work. We only need to offer it until we have enough to pay the bank, or at least to buy an extension. As this is mostly my fault, I’ll go first, and then you can decide if you want to be a part of this.”
Aloe leaned forward and gave Lotus a quick peck on her cheek. “Dear sister, we are in this together; you said as much earlier. If we are doing this, then we are doing it as sisters – all together or not at all.”
They both got up and moved out towards the door leading into the spa. Opening the door, they froze at what they saw. Vera had not been idle in the few minutes she had had to prepare. All the lights in the spa had been extinguished, replaced by several small scented candles that they had bought but never used. On a side table, two sticks of incense were burning down, releasing a strongly spiced aroma into the air. Two massage chairs had been prepared, with a tray containing body oils and lotions sitting next to them. Vera had even been busy preparing herself; her body was covered in a thin sheen of oil, and she reflected the light from the flickering candles almost like a mirror. Her normally sleek purple mane and tail had both been redone into new styles; rather than being slicked back and kept up with a bandanna, she had tied her mane into a bun and inserted several long pins to keep it together, a popular mane style in Neighponese cultures.
Aloe and Lotus walked out into the room, looking around. While it was still their spa, it didn’t look it. Vera motioned for them to take their seats, keeping her eyes averted as she did so. Lotus could only assume that this was something she had read about in one of her books; that she was playing a role or something similar. Only once they were seated in their chairs did Vera speak.
“Who wants to go first?” she asked.
Lotus gulped before answering, “I will.” If she had been told that morning that she was about to receive an erotic massage from her cousin, she would have told that pony they were crazy, but here she was, face down on one of her own massage chairs with Vera standing over her with a bottle of oil in her mouth.

‘This isn’t so bad’ Lotus thought, ‘I suppose we could do this’.
As Lotus relaxed into the massage, she noticed the smell of the incense increasing. It wasn’t an unpleasant smell; maybe a little overpowering, but nothing she couldn’t overlook. Vera’s hoofwork was smooth and confident. She had learned much since she had walked through their door several months ago; back then she didn’t know anything about working a spa. Now she could expertly pinpoint every source of tension and deftly work her hooves directly to the spot. As Vera’s hooves slid down her back, Lotus considered offering her a permanent position here, if they made it though the month. She dismissed the idea almost at once; Vera had made it quite clear that she wanted to return to Germaney, though she was happy to come back here every now and then.
Her mind wandering, Lotus didn’t notice Vera’s hooves stray towards her cutie marks until it was too late. As Lotus well knew, a pony’s cutie mark had one of the highest densities of nerve endings anywhere on the body. “Eeek,” she squealed when she felt Vera touch her blossom mark; it had been unexpected and was considered slightly taboo to touch another pony’s mark without asking first.
The unexpected sensation sent shivers through her body and Lotus nearly jumped out of the chair. She settled down quickly, and tried to relax again. This proved difficult, as there was an annoying tingle starting to develop in her marehood. She blushed a little, knowing that Vera would be able to see it if she looked down.
