Onyx Crystal, the prince of the Crystal Empire, is in a war against a changeling army. With the aid of his steadfast general, Diamond Ward, he is doing all that he can to protect his Empire against what appears to be an unbeatable foe. Hope seems lost, until he finds an old book in the city library. The book has no title, but its cover is engraved with the symbol of dark magic; the same symbol that adorns Prince Onyx's flank.

With the dark power contained in the book, Onyx believes that he can defeat the changelings. His mother, Queen Crystal, begs him not to fall to the sway of dark magic, but Onyx knows he can control it; dark magic is his talent, his destiny.

Can Prince Onyx master the black magic of Maregan le Neigh? Can he defeat the changelings and save the Crystal Empire?
