Defeated by the forces of good and harmony while barely escaping death, King Sombra wanders Equestria aimlessly. However, when he discovers someone in a position not so different from his own, they both see an opportunity for mutual benefit. As Sombra and Chrysalis work together and both try to deceive the other take over Equestria, they soon find that they have more in common than they first thought.
