The Nightmare Theory

We all know the story of the alicorn sisters and the beginning of Equestria, but do we know it all? The answer: no. It has yet to be explained, until now! Let's start off just after the reign of chaos.

Celestia and Luna walked through the courtyard, gazing at each statue. "Aren't they glorious Luna?"

"Yeah.. I guess..."

Celestia put a hoof around Luna. "I know you were close with him, but it had to be done Luna..."

Luna shoved her sister's hoof off of her. "I don't want your sympathy."

Celestia looked away at a different statue. It stood marbled, towering over the others. Two little alicorns pranced around on top, with a half moon, half sun emblem hovering above. She sighed.

"It didn't have to be like this, Tia.... I could've talked to him.." The young sister teared up.

Celestia looked back to Luna. "He wouldn't have listened."

Luna's tears began flowing as she snarled, "YES HE WOULD HAVE! We both had our ways, his being chaos, mine being the darkness.... but it doesn't matter! You and your STUPID WORTHLESS ELEMENTS had to come along and ruin it... no ruin EVERYTHING! You're a coward, Celestia! A COWARD! What ever you can't handle, you INCASE THEM IN STONE! DON'T YOU THINK ABOUT HOW CRUEL IT IS KEEPING THEM HOSTAGE AND SHOWING THEM OFF TO OTHER PONIES IS?!?"

"It's for the safety of Equestria! And how DARE YOU SPEAK TO ME LIKE THAT!" Tia growled back.'

"NO IT'S NOT!" Luna began shouting. "YOU ARE NOTHING BUT A PATHETIC, COWARDY FAKE THAT DOES NOTHING BUT SEND AWAY ANY PROBLEM SHE ENCOUNTERS! YOU'VE SHOWN NO SORT OF LOVE OR CARE TO ME SINCE YOU DEFEATED MY ONLY FRIEND! AND NOW YOU EXSPECT ME TO LIVE MY LIFE THE WAY YOU WANT IT?!?" Luna's rage was interrupted by both sisters' tears. "I-..... I'm so sorry, Tia... I didn't mean to get upset...."

Celestia smiled gently and hugged her sister. "I love you, Luna~"

"I love you more, Tia~" Luna smiled through her tears. Celesta flew off to go take care of royal matters, leaving Luna in the garden. Luna slumped over and huffed. She was emotionally exhauster and plopped her flank down near a base of a statue. She didn't care for who it was or were. She just wanted to rest.

Hunching over and looking around, she noticed a strange fog rolling in. Luna curiously peered at the murky mist and saw it roll in towards her and the statue. The stench of the fog was far stronger than anything Luna ever smelled. She tried her best to keep from smelling it... but couldn't. Luna gasped for air, inhaling a cloud of mist. She coughed and sputtered as the fog seemed to thicken. Feeling a bit dizzy and lightheaded, the little alicorn tried to regain her balance. Suddenly, the world plunged into darkness and she collapsed into sleep.

Within her dream, she heard echoes of a familiar voice. The laughter surrounded her as she tensed up, becoming more frightened each second longer. The cackle stopped and then the voice spoke nasally and croakily.

"Oh dear Luna! What a pleasant surprise!"

Luna looked around the darkness, trying to find a source to the voice. "What am I doing here? What's going on?"

A snicker follows as it replies, "You're under my control, dearest Luna, and I have yet to explain why I am here. How come there are sooo many questions exiting your mouth? Have you changed?"

Luna lowered her head and began backing up. "What do you want with me.."

"It's simple really, I just wished to see my little Lu-Lu~"

Luna's eyes widen. Only one person called her that. "Leave me alone...."

"Why Luna, what fun would that be?" A spark of magic flashed brightly from behind Luna. Luna, accidentally bumping into something, turned around to see two glowing eyes staring back at her.

"Why, hello there Lu-Lu~"

"Gyah!" Luna stumbled backward, falling onto her flank. The thing burst out laughing, throwing it's head back. Luna scowled at the laughing stock.

"HEY! What is with you!?"

The thing stopped and raised and eyebrow. "Seriously? You don't remember?"

Luna stood up and brushed herself off.

"No," she shook her head.

"I'm the god of chaos, uhduh!" he playfully flicked Luna's crown off her head. She turned in shock and watched it tumble into the darkness. She felt herself grow hot from rage. She flipped her head back towards the goofball, turning back to meet him face to face.

"GYAH!" she reared backward and toppled over. "Ow! Would you QUIT DOING THAT?!"

He sneered, snickering. Looking at him, his body was misformed. It had a goat's head, a furry body, an eagle claw and lion paw, a dragon tail, a tiger's fang, a reptile's leg and a croc's foot, and the horns of a deer and a ram.

"...you're a draconequus," Luna stated.

He snapped his claw and another flash blinded Luna. Blinking, the blurry images refocused, revealing a colorful, wacky game show studio. A bell rang out: Ding! Ding! Ding!

"That is correct!" the draconequus anounnced from a stage in front of Luna. The crowd roared, cheering for the win. Looking at the public viewers, Luna noted they were just copies of the draconequus.

"So Constant #1!" Luna turned her gaze to the 'Game Show Host'. "Answer this question: What memories do you have in that big head of your's?" Luna huffed, he triggered a flash of a nightmare to pop up.

"I'm not here to play." she cringed.

The buzzer hissed. BZZZZZT! "Oooh! I'm sorry, but that wasn't the answer we were looking for!"

The crowd began taunting and booing the Lunar Princess. Panicking through her teary eyes, she searched for an exit as the laughter and unkind commentary echoed around her. The colors around her dripped and melted away while she galloped to escape it all. The only solid things left was Luna and the darkness.

Tears streamed down her face, full of sadness and fear. She put a hoof on her head. "Such a pain...." she mumbled.

"Well you're no day at the beach either, Princess!" he hissed. Luna was taken back in realization, a growing pain clenching in her chest. "Discord...... no...... NO! STAY AWAY! CELESTIA? NO!!" Luna turned and galloped away in tears and fear. She galloped far from the evil spirit as fast as she could. She breathing staggered as terrifying memories flashed in her head.

"What's the matter, Luna? Don't be scared, I just want to help you...." His voice echoed through the darkness. Luna's heart pounded in her chest. The clopping of her hooves was all that could be heard. Screeching to a stop, she panted, hoping he was gone. She used her magic to light her vision.

"Luna, my dear," his voice sounded closer. Suddenly, Luna felt his paw grab her horn, extinguishing her only light. He let go just as fast as he had grabbed, leaving Luna once again in utter darkness.

Luna's eyes widened as a pathway of dimly lit candles led up to a pedastal. She slowly walked towards it, trembling in fear. "W-what do you want from me..."

He chuckled, "You'll soon see, Wuna~" Discord appeared on the pedastal. As his aura surrounded her, Discord motioned Luna to come forward.

"My dearest Luna, I've seen the envy you withhold. You are tired of your sister getting all your credit, for your night, your stars, all your hard work." Luna squeezed her eyes shut as he contiuned. "She's just using you so she can sleep, while you do everything! And what thanks do you get? You have tried once before to confront her on the subject, and BOOM! Sent to the moon for 1,000 years! All the while the ponies sleep through your beautiful night!"

Discord extended his paw and grabbed Luna, pulling her up to join him. He placed her down, now swirling around her like a snake. He seemed to taunt Luna, getting the best of her. She tried keeping him out, but he just seem to wedge in deeper and deeper into her thoughts.

"Aren't you sick of her just pushing you around?"

Luna rubbed her temple, "Stay out of my head!"

"I can help you get the respect and recognition you deserve..."

Luna looked up to him, meeting him eye to eye. His yellow eyes and red pupils sank in deep into her gaze. Luna's ears perked up, she finally seemed interested. "I'm listening...."

"This orb here contains the dark elements of chaotic power. It has been passed down from my ancestors, the chaotic nightmares that haunt the dreams of ponies. I wish to aid you with your problems, but I only ask one thing of you." He leaned forward close enough to Luna that she could feel the warmth of his body.

"If I grant you these powers, you will become my Chaotic Queen.... for you see, you've always been my favorite Luna~" he whispered.

Luna blushed, her mouth open, but only her breath coming out. She was speechless. She was torn between her family, and Discord's love. All she could do was stare back at him, watching him toss the ball back and forth.

Discord grinned as his snake tongue slithered out and tickled Luna's nose playfully. Luna withdrawed, scrunching her nose and sneezing. When she looked back up, Discord was gone.

"Wait! Discord! I- uh..." she nervously shifted her eyes left and right in a panic.

"Yes, my widdle Wuna?" it echoed.

She sighed, ".....I'll do it."

He appeared in front of her and he smiled... his fang baring. "Excellent!" He scooped up Luna and brought her close to himself.

"Don't you worry, my love," he brought her in for a kiss. Luna felt the pain and fear disappear. She felt welcome. She felt... loved. The kiss lasted a couple of minutes, until Discord pulled away. Pulling out the orb, he crushed it in his claw. The orb's aura swirled around his arm, sinking into his flesh.

Baring an wicked grin, he pressed one of his claws to her forehead. Luna found herself staring into his eyes, which swirled with gold, pale green, sky blue, and white layers which moved like zooming in. Her eyes began to change like his. Her horn came to a sharp point, swirling with a dark indigo aura. Her light lilac hair grew into a starry night mane. Luna's skin darkened, becoming pitch black. Her pupils sharpened like a dragon's and she put on her family's night armor.

"Welcome to my Chaotic World, my dearest Queen of the Nightmares. It will be a pleasure taking over Equestria with you," he cackled. The newly transformed alicorn's eyes burst open, and her deep laugh roared.

"Oh Discord, I will be ever so delighted to rule along side you." she cooed. Turning to darkness to the top of Canterlot Castle, the mare reared, lightning striking behind her.

"CELESTIA! LOOK UPON ME EQUESTRIA, FOR I SHALL BE YOUR NEW LEADER! FEAR THY NAME AS IT ECHOES THROUGH THE LAND!

THE QUEEN OF NIGHTMARES, NIGHTMARE MOON!"
