Growing Upby Grace_NoteChaptersChapter 1Chapter 2Chapter 3Chapter 4Chapter 5Chapter 1"Applebloom! Hurry up! We can't be late to school again!" Scootaloo shouted through the bathroom door. They had been been late all week because of Applebloom's primping. "but ah have ta look nice if I e'er want Thundercloud ta like me!" Whined Applebloom. Oh she wouldn't understand. She's never liked anypony. "Will you two stop arguing? We gotta go!" Sweetie Belle shouted from downstairs. Applebloom hurriedly tied her bow before dashing down and racing down to see her two best friends. "So Sweetie Belle, are you excited to see Fret?" Applebloom teased as they walked to school. "Of course I'm excited to see my coltfriend!" She said with glee. Sweetie Belle had been dating Fret, Ponyville's favorite guitar player, for a month now. They were always making music together before and it was about time they had started dating. It's so good to see one of my friends happy. "Eww. Can we not talk about mushy stuff?" Scootaloo asked. Why does she always have to butt in and keep us from talking about colts? It's getting really annoying. Scootaloo never seemed to pay any attention to colts. The only boy she would talk to was Thundercloud ever since he moved from Cloudsdale and became a Cutie Mark Crusader. They were always talking about the Wonderbolts and how cool Rainbow Dash was. Boring! But why doesn't he talk to me about stuff we have in common? Applebloom had liked Thundercloud only as a friend when she first met him six years ago, but after those years of crusading, and hanging out once they got their cutie marks, her feelings had blossomed into quite a big crush on the blue colt. She could never figure out how she could like a clumsy pegasus with nothing in common with herself, but never the less she couldn't help but get butterflies in her stomach whenever he was around. Maybe it's the mane I like. I've always loved how the dark blue color mixes with the lighter blue. It complements his eyes nicely... "Applebloom! We're here!" Sweetie Belle said snapping Applebloom out of her Thundercloud-filled thoughts. Darn! I did it again... speak of the devil.. "Hey Sweetie Belle! Heya Applebloom! Hi Scootaloo." Thundercloud greeted the trio as he walked over. "A-Are you three doing anything after school today?" He turned his head to keep them from seeing the blush he had gotten. "Nope! We ain't doing anything! How 'bout we do something together?" Applebloom said before the others could respond. Thundercloud turned to Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo. "Do you want to come too?" "I'll go as long as Fret can come too!" "Yeah I guess I can tag along." Thundercloud perked up at Scootaloo's agreement. "Great! I'll see you fillies after class then!" He walked off with a bounce in his step. Yeah, just great! I wanted it to be just me and him! Why didn't Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle say no? They know I like him! Applebloom couldn't keep her thoughts off of Thundercloud during school. As she walked out of the school door, she couldn't help but worry about hanging out with him. What if something happens and I make a fool out of myself? He'll never like me! Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo would only make it worse! Oh why did they have to join? Wait, why did Scootaloo want to come. She hates when Sweetie and I talk about relationships! Why would she want to be there with Sweetie and Fret being lovey-dovey, let alone me trying to get Thunder to be... "Applebloom! Gosh you're really spacey today. Are you sure you want to come with us?" Sweetie Belle said, surprising the filly. "O' course ah wanna go!" Applebloom managed to squeak out. I really need to stop thinking so hard. "Then lets go! Come on Fret!" She called to the gray colored colt. "Coming Sweetie!" Fret called back as he trotted up behind her. "Are we all ready? I was thinking we could get cupcakes at Sugar Cube Corner." Thundercloud walked from the art building over to the group. "Wait, where's Scootaloo?" "Right here!" She answered as she flew down from the tree she had been laying on. Wow she must really take after Rainbow Dash. "Let's get this party started as Pinkie would say." "Party? Did someone say party? I absolutely love parties! They're so superderific!" Pinkie Pie suddenly showed up. "We were just about to go to Sugar Cube Corner! Care to join us?" Fret said. "Why of course I want to go with you! But I have to run some errands for the Cakes right now. I'll just join you later!" Pinkie answered before hopping away. "Okaay... Well we better get going." Thundercloud suggesting. "Good idea." Scootaloo responded, still shocked from Pinkie's sudden appearance. Once they got to Sugar Cube Corner and bought their favorite cupcakes, they sat down and talked. Sweetie Belle and Fret were discussing their music, when not eating or kissing; Scootaloo and Thundercloud were arguing about what Rainbow's best trick was; and Applebloom was picking at her cupcake not knowing who's conversation to join. Just as she was about to give up and make an excuse to leave, Claw Hammer, another Cutie Mark Crusader and friend, walked in to the shop. Maybe Claw can keep me company! "Heya Claw! What ya doin' here?" Applebloom greeted the red colt. "Oh hi Applebloom. I was just picking up the cake my mom ordered earlier." He answered. "Darn, ah was hoping ya would be able ta stay for a bit." Applebloom said disappointingly. There goes that plan! "I-I can always drop the cake off at home a-and come back if you want!" He assured her. "That would be great!" Applebloom answered. Yes! Thank goodness for Claw coming and being my knight in shining armor! Claw rushed off with the cake, seeming eager to get back. He knows he can take his time, right? Faster the better I guess. Within minutes, Claw had come back short of breath. He managed to pant out "I got here. Soon as I could. Didn't want. Leave you too long." "Ya didn't have to run here. Ah could 'ave waited for ya." Applebloom chuckled. "Hehe yeah I guess I could've walked... I'm gonna get a cupcake. You want one?" "I can get myself one. Ya dont 'ave-" "No I insist! I want to buy a cupcake for a pretty filly!" "We'll if ya insist then ah guess ah can't say no. Ya still remember mah favorite-" "Chocolate with apple pieces inside and vanilla frosting adorned with a slice of an alamata apple!" He proudly smiled. He does remember. Impressive. He even remembered my favorite apple... "I guess I didn't have to ask!" She giggled to herself as he trotted over to the counter. As he sat down with the sweets, Applebloom couldn't help but notice how he was looking at her. It was like she was some kind of royalty. Now why would he look at me like that? I'm not special or anything. I'm just a farm girl who loves apples. "I was actually looking for you earlier. I wanted to ask you something." He said looking down. What would he want to ask me? Only one way to find out... "What is it, Sugarcube?" "...What do you think of me?" He sounds kinda sad. I should cheer him up with my answer! "Well ya're really good at fixing things. That's what makes ya such a great partner ta work with on big projects." He seems to be happier! "And ya are just a wonderful friend.." "So I'm only a friend to you then." He looked back to his uneaten cupcake. Darn, he got sad again! But what about being a great friend made him so upset. Applebloom frowned. "No I said ya were a wonderful friend. There's a difference." "Yeah, big difference."he muttered. He sounds even sadder! What am I doing wrong? "What's wrong, Claw? Ya're usually so happy. Is it something ah did?" "It's more of something you didn't do. And no there's nothing you can do now. I got to go. My mom probably needs help with the party tomorrow. I'll see you later." He said before sulking away. If only I knew what made him that sad. What should I have done that would have made him happy again? Poor Claw. I know! I'll just do that thing he wanted at the party! It'll make him so happy, he'll never be sad again! Now I just need to figure out what he wanted me to do. Chapter 2Applebloom skipped to Sugar Cube Corner, especially delighted with herself. Claw is gonna be so happy! She had been up all night trying to think of a way to cheer her friend up. She finally figured out how she would achieve such a feat. Now all I need to do is show him! The closer Applebloom got, the more nervous she became. What if he doesn't like it? What then? I don't know if anything else could make him happy. As Applebloom walked in, the smell of cupcakes and pie wafted through her nose. Her mouth watered as she thought of the different flavors they could be. Maybe I could eat some before seeing Claw. Or maybe I should being one to him. They should cheer him up a but before the big surprise! Yeah! Applebloom grabbed two chocolate cupcakes before searching for the upset colt. Hmm he isn't by the punch. Nor the cake. Or on the dance floor! Where could he... Oh there he is! She had spotted him in the back corner, just as upset as the day before. She started to sneak up on him, which wasn't hard considering he was too bummed to pay attention to anything. This is gonna be good! When she got right up behind him, she quickly smashed one of the cupcakes into his muzzle. "Gotcha! Ah knew that would get ya to look up!" Applebloom laughed. "Hehe yeah I guess it did" Claw said cheerfully. Once he turned and saw Applebloom, he went back to sulking. What the hay? "What's the big deal? Ah try to cheer ya up and ya just go back to bein' sad once ya look at me! That's the thanks ah get!" "Sorry 'bloom. I just have a lot on my mind right now." "Do ya want ta talk about it?" "No... Talking to you would make it worse." What! "How would ah make it worse?" Applebloom yelled at her friend. The colt shrunk back. "Just forget about it Applebloom!" He shouted before running out. What did I do! I can't show him the surprise! Now Applebloom was the one sulking in the corner. She didn't go unnoticed though. "Hey Saddy McSadderson! Why such a long face?" Pinkie skipped over gleefully. Is she ever not happy? "Hi Pinkie. Ah just got myself inta friend problems." "Maybe I could help you! Tell your Auntie Pinkie Pie all about it!" "Well..." Applebloom proceeded to tell the party pony everything that had happened. "Wow that's a doozy! I think he wants to take it... To the next level!" "What do ya mean 'next level'?" "Well obviously he wants to more than just a friend! He wants to be best friends! All you have to do is spend more time with him!" "But then ah'll have no time for hanging out with Thundercloud! Ah have ta got him ta like me if we're ever gonna be coltfriend and fillyfriend!" "Hmm that's even more of a doozy! It hurts my brain.” The pony scrunched up her nose. “Cupcakes should make it better!" Pinkie skipped away, leaving Applebloom to find a solution. This is just great! Applebloom moped on home. She went right on up into her room, not even sparing a glance on her family. She climbed into her bed, cocooning herself into the blanket. “Now what has gotten inta tha` filly?” She barely heard Applejack asked Big Macintosh. Now my own family is gonna get mad at me! what else can go wrong? Applebloom didn't move as the door opened. “Sugarcube, whats tha matter? You never go right past any o us without sayin` hi at least!” Applejack sat on the corner on the bed trying to comfort her sister. “Its nothin! Ahm just tired, thats all!” “Them tears say otherwise. Bloom, ya know ya can tell me anythin right?’” Applebloom looked into the older pony`s eyes and knew she trusted the mare with all of her heart. “Oh Applejack, it was so confusing!” The now sobbing filly lept into her sister`s front legs and told her everything that had happened. Once finished, Applejack hugged her sister and comforted her little sister until she fell asleep. “She might have her cutie mark, but she still has a lot olearnin ta do.” The mare said before laying Applebloom down and shutting the door. Chapter 3Applebloom strolled into the Cutie Mark Clubhouse, excited to relax with her friends. The Crusaders never stopped hanging out in the clubhouse and making plans, though those plans were of a different nature. Now they were finding ways to use their special talents to help others instead of getting in trouble to find that special talent. They figured it would make up for all of that trouble. Applebloom was the first to reach the clubhouse, so she sat inside and waited for the others. Sweetie Belle and Fret were the next to arrive, followed by Scootaloo and Thundercloud. “Do any oya know if Claw is comin?” He probably won't, but I'll just make sure. Scootaloo answered, “We saw him on the way here. He said he shouldn't come over for awhile. Any thing to tell us Applebloom?” The orange pony glared at her yellow friend. Oh sour apples! “Ah have no idea! He did look under the weather yesterday, maybe thats why he isn't here.” She tried to look as if she was telling the truth. *Thank goodness Im not as bad a liar as Applejack!* Sweetie eyed the nervous pony. “Okay. I believe you but if we learn you were lying, so help me Celestia, you will never even think of doing it again. Now what should we do today?” Thank Celestia Sweetie Belle has a shorter attention span than most ponies. Sweetie Belle argued with Scootaloo over whether they should entertain the elderly folk or recruit more fillies and colts to the Cutie Mark Club. Applebloom remembered when Scootaloo and Thundercloud decided they wanted more pegasi to be as awesome as them and made the club to help. Then Sweetie Belle and Fret joined in to help the more musical recruits. After a while, Applebloom gave in to the children asking her to help them fix whatever they had broken and even taught a few. Eventually, a bunch of other teenage ponies came to help out. They may not be speeding up the cutie mark process, but they were giving kids something fun to do without getting into too much trouble. Ah wonder how mah apprenticeis doin` with that boat? "Ah think we should see the young'uns! It's been a while since we last visited." Applebloom butted in, stopping the fight. "I agree with Applebloom. It's been quite a while since we saw the little trouble makers." Thundercloud joined in. He agreed with me! "Aww I was hoping we could see the elderly." Fret pouted. Sweetie Belle snuggled into her coltfriend to cheer him up. "We can always see them after the younger kids, Fret." She suggested. He happily perked up. Aww they are so adorable! "Yeah! Lets go!" Thundercloud jumped into the air. "I swear your just like Snowflake sometimes!" Scootaloo giggled at the pegasus. Who's Snowflake? They walked to the Cutie Mark Crusader Clubhouse Jr. Applebloom had built it after the amount of kids visiting the first one had been too much. It had been constructed far enough out of town not to make too much trouble, but close enough so that their parents wouldn't worry when the kids left. "Hey Shorty!" Scootaloo greeted the light pink pegasus flying torward her. Angel Wings, the light pink pony, was known to be Scootaloo's shadow whenever she visited. "Hi Scootaloo! Are you gonna teach me something about flying today?" "Maybe we should work on braking." She panted out as Angel ran into her stomach. "I'll help you with that. Braking is always the easiest." Thundercloud chuckled as he picked Scootaloo up. "Yeah, that would be great!" Scootaloo blushed and followed Angel back outside. "Come on Fret! I wanna see the new piano we got!" Sweetie dragged her coltfriend to another room, leaving Applebloom alone. What should I do? Thundercloud is flying with Scootaloo so they won't be any help. And Sweetie Belle doesn't like when I interrupt the music she and Fret play. She decided to find her favorite young colt, Hex Screw. He had been a big help building the new clubhouse, and after quite a bit of pleading, Applebloom agreed to mentor him. He was always working hard on each 'assignment' the yellow filly would give him. Gosh he's probably almost finished with the rowboat I gave him yesterday! Sure enough, Hex finished it and was awaiting the next piece of work. Applebloom examined his progress. He's getting much better! She thought about what to assign next. Gosh he's been through six pieces since Thursday! I should give him a few days break for once. "Good job there, Hex! Seems yer doin' great, so how bout ah give ya a few days off?" "Yes! I'm gonna go play with my little sister then! She's been wanting me to build her a doll house for a while now, but I've been so busy with the stuff you've given me that I never had the time! Thanks Applebloom!" He shouted before sprinting out the door. Nice to know I made somepony happy. Applebloom worked on her special project. She planned to give it to Thundercloud as a present once it was absolutely perfect. She has been working on it ever since she realized her feelings and she certainly wasn't ever gonna stop until it was finished. Applebloom, deciding to retire for the day, strolled outside to watch Thundercloud. Scootaloo was sitting on the ground watching Angel practice. "Hey Scoots. Get tired o' flyin' fer the day?" "Yeah. That kid always wears me out." Scootaloo kept watching the filly with a proud look in her eye. "She reminds me o' somepony when they were just a little filly" Applebloom laughed. "Really? Who?" Scootaloo exclaimed puzzled. "Why ya o' course! She looks up ta ya like us used ta look up ta Rainbow Dash!" "Haha yeah, I guess she does." Scootaloo grinned. They sat in silence as they gazed upon the older pegasus. He praised the filly when she did good and gave her pointers when she messed up. He would be such a great big brother. She smiled at the thought of Thundercloud playing with a little brother or sister. Applebloom looked at the filly beside her. Scootaloo had a look of pure awe. She must be so proud of Angel Wings. “Whatcha starin` at Scoots?” “N-Nothing! J-Just like watching Angel fly! Yeah! Angel!” Scootaloo looked around nervously with wide eyes. What`s her problem? “Okay... Whatever ya say.” She went back to watching the pegasi in the sky. In the corner of her eye, she saw Scootaloo fidgeting with her hoofs. “... I-I just remembered I told Rainbow Dash that I would help her with- umm- her … tortoise! Yeah, Tank! See you guys later!” Wow... That was weird. Wonder what has gotten into her. “Applebloom! Did you see that?” Thundercloud asked as he landed in front on her. “Huh? Oh no ah didnt. Sorry. Wha happened?” she apologized. “Angel just did a quadruple loop de loop while twisting around and singing the ABCs! It was awesome!” Thundercloud said excitedly. Angel landed beside him. “It was nothing! Right Scoot- Where`s Scootaloo?” She pouted. Poor kid. “Yeah where is that filly?” Thundercloud looked around in hope of seeing an orange coat. “She left a few minutes ago. Apparently she had to help Rainbow with Tank.” “Awww! She never gets to see my cool moves!” The pink haired filly whined. “Maybe next time kiddo. Why don't you go home and rest up.” The colt suggested. “Alright! See you next time Thunder!” She said as she flew off leaving Applebloom alone with the colt she admired most. Alright Applebloom! This is your chance to impress him! “Sooooo... Wanna go get some lunch? Ah know this place by Rose's flower shop that makes a great dandelion sandwich!" Say yes, say yes, say yes! "Well... *gurgle* Haha I guess my stomach answered for me!" "Let's go before tha' stomach gets even louder!" She laughed before leading Thundercloud to the restaraunt. After they ate their lunch, the two ponies decided to take a walk around town. Yes, lunch was perfect! This is going so well! "So, Applebloom, got your eyes on a colt lately?" Thundercloud teased. "Well... Umm.." Should I tell him? "So there is somepony! Is it Pipsqueak? Wait no, Rumble! Or is it Featherweight? Yes, definitely Featherweight!" He taunted the blushing pony. "No! It's none of them! Ah only like one of mah closest friends!" Get the hint already! "Well it can't be Fret. It's Claw, isn't it? You two always had so much in common. It would only make sense you would like him." He smiled. "No! It's ya ah like! Ah've always liked ya Thunder!" Applebloom shouted before she could stop herself. Now what have I done? "Oh... I have to go. See you tomorrow." Thundercloud walked away, shocked from his friend's confession. Great. Applebloom sulked her way on back to Sweet Apple Acres. Not wanting to go inside the house, she wandered through the orchard. After walking around the perimeter, Applebloom decided to sit down on her favorite hill and watch the sunset. The warm colors the sun made when going down had always comforted the filly. Like a nice hug. "Applebloom! Supper is ready!" She heard her sister yell from the house. Time to seem happy. Not worried at all! Supper had gone well enough. Applebloom hadn't eaten a lot during the course and stayed quiet the whole time. Thankfully her siblings were too tired from harvesting apples all day to notice and Granny Smith was... well Granny was just being Granny. Applebloom left for her room, just wanting to be alone. She climbed in her bed. She begged for the nothingness of sleep, but the events of the day had kept her awake. Why did he ask me that? Why didn't I just lie? I could've said I didn't like anypony! He probably doesn't want to talk to me ever again! After hours of tossing and turning, she was finally able to escape reality and get some rest. Chapter 4Applebloom walked to school, still worrying from Sunday. I'm such an idiot. She walked into the classroom, trying her hardest to avoid Thundercloud`s gaze. The whole week he had seemed as if nothing had happened after their lunch. He was just as friendly to her as usual. He probably thinks I was kidding. Or maybe he doesn't want to accept the fact that I like him! She was so caught up in her thoughts, she didn't hear Ms. Cheerilee ask her a question about the Dragon Wars. "Ahem! When did the Dragon Wars officially begin?" Crap. "Umm... 42?" She said nervously. "No, it was 1832. Applebloom, I would appreciate if you would pay attention more." Applebloom looked down in embarrassment. Just great. The rest of the school day passed with no more incidents. As she walked out of the classroom, Claw ran up to her side. What does hewant? "Hey Applebloom. How've you been?" He smiled. "Oh so now ya'll talk ta me!" She shot at the colt. "Look I'm sorry. I shouldn't have yelled at you. I was taking my problems out on you and that wasn't right. I don't want to lose my best friend. Can you forgive me?" He asked somberly. Poor Claw. I'm the one who put him through all of this. But I can't let him off tooeasy! "Ah guess ah can forgive ya. Just don't do it again!" She glared at her now cheerful friend. "How about I buy you your favorite at Sugar Cube Corner to try and make up for your trouble?" How gentlecolt of him. "Ya don't have ta ask me twice!" She skipped off, leaving Claw to follow. After Claw purchased Applebloom's apple-y goodness and his chocolate monstrosity, they decided to sit in the park and chat. Applebloom filled him in on Hex's progress. "I knew the kiddo was a pro, but I didn't think he was that good!" He said astonished. "Yeah, so good ah've run out o' things fer him ta fix! Ya think he's ready to build from scratch?" "Definitely! If he's as good as you say then he might have his cutie mark in no time!" He laughed. "Just like us when we were his age." "Or not. `member tha time we tried ta build a boat in one afternoon!” She laughed, almost dropping her pastry crumbs on herself. “Or the time we mixed our lemonade up with oil! It took forever to clean that kart!” He chuckled. “Maybe ya should come with me tomorrow ta help. I`ve been meaning ta show him what not to do when constructing.” She teased the red colt. “Why? He already has you to learn from!” He shot back with a laugh. Oh no he didn`t! “Oh you are on!” She grinned. “Loser has ta wear a pretty pink dress ta school the next day.” “Does the winner have liberty to take pictures?” He smiled evilly. “Eeyup! But they can`t post it all over tha buildings in town. Only for themself. Deal?” “Deal! Prepare to lose Applesmack!” He playfully pushed the filly. Yeah right! “Ya say that now! Just wait `til after i kick yer rump!” She chuckled. “No you wo- Oh horsefeathers I gotta go! Beat you tomorrow!” He yelled, noticing the sunset before running off. I guess I should go home too. She trotted into the kitchen, entranced by the smell of apple pastries. Granny must have been cooking earlier. She was overwhelmed by fritters, pies, turnovers, tarts and cobblers. She certainly went all out. Its not someones birthday, is it? She probably just thinks it is. Good thing though, I was gonna make some myself to celebrate my win tomorrow. “Howdy Half Pint! How was yer day?” Granny asked, pulling a fresh batch of fritters out of the oven. The smell wafted through the fillys nose, her mouth starting to water.Noticing her grandfoals growling stomach, the old mare handed Applebloom a cooled off turnover. Good ol' Granny! “Good. Claw and ah had cupcakes and talked at the park. Mmmmmm! These are delicious!” She said, taking a bite of the pastry. “Well we had to celebrate yer sister`s engagement.” she smiled. “Granny, ah wanted ta tell her mahself!” Applejack pouted as she walked in accompanied by her now fiance, Rainbow Dash. “Then ya shoulda told me not ta tell anyone!” The older mare teased. “Who asked who?” Applebloom piped in, bouncing in anticipation. “I did.” Rainbow Dash said proudly, leaning into the blushing mare. “Yesterday I took her on a picnic in the west wing where our favorite hill is. Then once the sun was almost set, I gave her a big long speech about how after the past five years, I couldn't live without her. She was so overjoyed when I pulled out the necklace and asked her to be mine forever.” “Awwwwww! Thats so romantic!” Applebloom gushed. “Ah cant wait until somepony asks me ta marry them.” “Well yer just gonna have ta wait ‘Bloom. Ya still have ta find thaspecial somepony first.” Granny reminded the filly while setting treats down in front of the ponies. “Now eat up! Andmember ta save some fer yer brother.” Applebloom ate and asked questions about her sister's special day. Once stuffed and out of questions, she went up to her room. Not wanting to climb into bed quite yet, she decided to wash herself off. She couldn't help but think about her current relationship problem. Friendzoned. I`m friendzoned! Why won't he just give me a chance? He knows I like him, so why won't he let me be his fillyfriend? With the water now cold, Applebloom got out and dried herself off. She climbed into bed and curled up in the blanket, welcoming the comforting feeling it gave off. "Best. Day. Ever." She muttered before drifting off. Chapter 5Something has gone wrong. We don't seem to have an archived copy of that chapter.
Chapter 1"Applebloom! We gotta go!" "I'll go as long as Fret can come too!" "Yeah I guess I can tag along." Thundercloud perked up at Scootaloo's agreement. "Great! I'll see you fillies after class then!" Applebloom said disappointingly.
