The Best Young Flier Competition
When it all goes wrong
Load Full StoryThe Best Young Flyer Competition
It was another beautiful and quiet day. Everypony from Cloudsdale was going on the Best Young Flyer Competition. Some as spectators, some as fans of their family members and friends, and some as flyers. And there were also those, who were supposed to judge them. One of them was Spitfire.
But Spitfire was again in bad mood. She walked here and there thinking of what will she loose. Thanks to some mistakes in planning and disasters in weather factory, the Best Young Flyer Competition was in the same day as the Annual Party of the Wonderbolts. It was the best party of whole year! Every Wonderbolt and their friends were invited. But this time it was different. Spitfire and another two Wonderbolts, Wave Chill and Misty Fly, were asked to be the judges. Try to say ‘NO’ to your captain.
Spitfire was still walking, waiting for others when Soarin came to her. “Hey Spitfire, what’s wrong?” asked Soarin with sarcastic voice.
Spitfire raised her head and slowly pushed Soarin back. “What’s wrong?! Ah, that’s good question! Maybe it’s that I can’t go on the party?!”
Soarin suddenly stopped and put one of his hooves on Spitfire’s mouth. “Oh come on Spit, it won’t take that long. And when it will end, you can come on the party! And you can bring the new best young flyer of this year!” said Soarin with nice tone, trying to calm Spitfire down.
It worked. Spitfire put her head on Soarin’s shoulder. “You’re right -” but then she again raised it “- But these ‘awesome’ young flyers are totally boring. Why Captain chose me? Oh, this will be terrible,” said Spitfire with very sad voice.
Soarin again tried to comfort her. “You can’t look at things like this. You know, every coin has two sides. The second side may look smaller, but you have to learn to be happy even from the smallest things.”
Suddenly all worries and sadness disappeared from Spitfire’s face. Instead of them, she had very devious smile. “Being happy even from the smallest things? I already learned that! Why do you think that I’m so happy with you?”
Soarin blushed and had shy smile on his face. Fortunately Misty Fly and Wave Chill just came. They didn’t seem to hear the last sentence. They still had some time so they’ve spent it together. Wave saw Soarin’s face and knew this isn’t normal. “Hey Soarin, what happened? You’re so red,” he said and start laughing.
Soarin wanted to reply, but Spitfire was faster. Now his pride was in danger. Spitfire, who said that nasty sentence, wanted to speak. “I just told him that I’m happy with him. Not like I was with you, Wave,” said Spitfire and looked back at Soarin with her devious smile. She wanted to see if he got that ambiguity. He did. But he was glad that Spitfire told it like that.
Time passed by and Soarin was still checking clocks. Misty Fly mentioned that. Firstly she didn’t want to tell anything, but his checking didn’t stop. It was even more frequent. “What’s up Soarin? You are acting very strange today. Are you looking forward our leaving? You want to get rid of us?” she said in sarcastic tone.
Soarin shook his head and replied, “No I don’t want to, but you will still have to go. Or you’ll be late. Look at the clocks by yourself.”
Everypony looked at the clocks. It was very shocking. They were late. “Guys, let’s go!” ordered Spitfire as leader of their group. They all put their glasses on and flew out.
It wasn’t that far. In halfway Spitfire, who was in the lead, stopped. “We should do some trick as we arrive there. I mean, we are late, but it still has to look professional.”
Misty Fly nodded. “Yes, that’s a good idea. It will look like it was planned. But what shall we do?”
They were all thinking for a while when Wave Chill shouted, “What if we will do our typical? Going straight and before our target we will soar. Isn’t that enough?”
“It must be,” agreed Spitfire.
And so they did it. Spitfire was again in the lead and on her sides were Wave and Misty. When they got to the arena, where the Best Young Flyer Competition was, everypony watched them. They finished their trick with graceful landing on one of the clouds. The second group of Wonderbolts was already in their place.
“So here we are,” said Spitfire to her friends. “You know what? I will take a nap and then you’ll tell me what happened.”
Spitfire went backwards, so nopony saw her. Then she lay down and looked at the sky. The only thing what was interrupting her was the announcer. “And here comes number one! ... Whoa, this was perfectly performed sky-dive. And ano-”
“Oh my god!” shouted Spitfire loudly. When she realized that everypony heard her she had to continue somehow. “Oh my... my... This was... perfect! Yes, that’s the word. Perfect. Please continue.”
“What’s going on Spitfire?” asked Misty, but Spitfire immediately barked back.
“What? Do you have to ask? Just one thing. We are stuck in here, while the other Wonderbolts are on the party!” she yelled on Misty, but this time not that loud.
“The party didn’t even begin. And as you can see we aren’t the only Wondebolts in here,” Misty pointed on the second group. “I think that this will end soon. We will be there in time. Maybe one hour later,” she calmed Spitfire.
This didn’t calm Spitfire. It even angered her. “One hour?! You know how long it is? Everypony will be drunk when we come there.”
Misty turned back to watch the show, because talking with Spitfire was senseless. “Number three!” shouted announcer.
Spitfire again lay on the cloud, trying to relax. When she heard ‘number four’ she raised her head and asked, “Guys, how many of them will go?”
Misty coldly responded, “Fifteen,” and continued watching the show.
Time passed by, clouds on the sky were slowly moving and announcer was louder and louder. Spitfire tried to fall asleep, but she couldn’t. “Oh my... Can’t you go down there and tell her to be a little bit more quiet? I’m trying to sleep.”
“Stop whining Spitfire! I’m not surprised that Wave left you,” yelled Misty and looked at Wave Chill.
Spitfire protected herself. “He didn’t leave me. I left him.”
Wave Chill turned to Spitfire. Misty knew what was going to happen. She just mumbled, “Not this again...” and tried to concentrate on the show, meanwhile Spitfire and Wave Chill were barking on each other who was the first one. This took them very long time when suddenly Misty shouted, “Shut up!” They suddenly stopped and looked at Misty who had rage in her eyes.
There was a long silent moment what was broken by the announcer. “Number five.” Another quiet moment. “Number five, it’s your turn.” Noise was coming from each cloud in the arena. “Well, it looks like we don’t have number five, so it means number six!”
The orange Wonderbolt again lay down on the cloud and finally looked satisfied. “I hope that it will go like this with every number.”
As always, Spitfire was bored after a while. She decided to look what’s going on right now. Number eight just came in. It was gray mare with yellow eyes- wait! Spitfire focused on her eyes. The left one was looking on the left and the second was... LOOKING ON THE RIGHT? AND EVEN UPSIDE! What was that? “Hey guys, do you see her eyes?”
They were all shocked. “Yes, unfortunately,” replied Wave.
Spitfire sat down and said in joking voice, “I want to see this one!”
All what this pegasus did was flying forth and back. And she didn’t even fly straight. It was like ‘up and down, up and down’. “Well this is real tragedy. I think that I will go down and look what else is going to happen.”
And so she did. She came from behind, so nopony saw her. As she came there she looked around. Another five foals who thought that they are something special. One of them was almost adult. Well it was adult. “What is he doing in the Best YOUNG Flyer Competition?” Spitfire thought. He was talking with another three participators. And the fifth filly was lying under one of pillars and shivered in fear. ‘This will also be very funny.’
It was all what Spitfire wanted to see. She walked back to her clouds to the rest of her group. As she came there number ten just got into the arena. It was the oldest of these participators. But his flight was terrible. As everyone’s.
The announcer was tired, because it was very hot today. She wasn’t so loud so Spitfire fell asleep. Finally.
Suddenly, a hoof was punching Spitfire on her back. “Wake up! You absolutely want to see this!” urged Misty.
Spitfire stood up and looked down into the arena. “I know that one. Well I don’t know her personally, but I saw her down there. She was shivering like a puppy. But I want to see what’s her... -”Spitfire focused on the mare’s flank “- Number fifteen. Yes!”
Misty just shook her head. “Again looking forward the end. But I didn’t mean that one. Look on the other side of arena.”
Spitfire did as was told to her and saw it. “What? I didn’t saw her down there! But, that wings! It’s not even a pegasus!” Spitfire was looking with wide opened eyes and fallen jaw at white unicorn with beautiful and enormous butterfly wings. And the second thing was, that they made a double performance. Spitfire was now concentrated and looked at those beautiful wings. She didn’t even care about how she flew, because of these amazing wings.
She looked around to see the crowd. Everypony was also focused on that white unicorn with his wings. “I think that double performance was a bad idea. That cyan thing, what is only hitting clouds, is destroying it all,” said Spitfire and the rest of her group agreed.
And here it came. Both of them started soaring. Whole crowd stood up on all four hooves and nervously watched them. When they got into right height the white unicorn stopped, while the cyan pegasus continued up. The white unicorn spread its wings. It was... stunning. Rays of sunlight went through them making perfect light show. But the wings were also heating up. Spitfire saw something unusual. She concentrated on the wings and... “Oh shit!” she shouted and the wings caught on fire. They burned out in no second. “Fuck! Glasses on and catch her!”
Before they managed to put on their glasses, the white unicorn, with no wings, flew near them, falling deeper and deeper. But after a while they also managed to fly out. Misty Fly and Wave Chill were this time in the lead, while Spitfire was behind them. The white unicorn panicked even more, waving with all her hooves around. When Misty and Wave came closer to her they got kicked pretty hard in their head what stunned them. Spitfire was now the only one who managed to do something. “Hey you! Can you stop waving with that fuckin-” Spitfire tried to say when she got kicked too. They were all falling down on the ground. The second group of Wonderbolts was too far from them.
Suddenly, a great explosion came from upside and something caught them. Spitfire opened her eyes and saw that the one who saved them was the shivering filly. She then looked around and saw what happened. The filly flew that fast that it managed to hit the level of eighty-eight wingpower, so it managed to do one of most difficult things. It is called different for each pegasus, but this one is called the Sonic Rainboom. It was beautiful. But Spitfire now knew that she’s not the only one who can do it. The cyan hero-pegasus made rainbow over the arena and gracefully landed inside, putting the Wonderbolts down. They were all shocked. Something like this doesn’t happen every day.
When all of them recover they came to her and Spitfire was supposed to give her the winner’s trophy. Such an embarrassing thing. She gave trophy to somepony who managed to do same thing as she did, but long time ago. And another thing what she had to do, was to choose the second best flyer. “Choosing the second best flyer? But I didn’t see any of those...” she thought and then remembered the only flyer what she saw. “On the second place is number eight! Congratulations, you are almost the best. Not perfect, but still good.”
Spitfire then turned on the other side and tried to walk away when Wave Chill stopped her. “Where are you going Spitfire? Do you remember that first-place prize is also flight with us?”
Spitfire turned and mumbled for herself, “Unfortunately,” but then she got idea of an excuse. “You know, I can’t go. I must go and find my glasses. Enjoy it and don’t expect me to come!”
Spitfire again turned backwards, but Blaze stood in her way. “You mean these glasses?” she asked and held Spitfire’s Wonderbolt glasses.
She grabbed them and said in very stern voice, “Thanks Blaze. I will NEVER forget about this!”
Blaze just smiled and walked away. Spitfire had to join the rest of the group in their flight. They flew together putting hooves on their shoulders, so it looked like one group hug in the air. Misty Fly was on the left, cyan pony in the middle and Wave Chill on the right. Spitfire flew alone behind them. “Hey you, what’s your name? We want to know who saved us,” asked Wave.
The cyan pony little blushed and replied, “Rainbow Dash.”
When Wave saw that Spitfire is closer he continued, “So, Rainbow Dash, don’t you want to join us on our Wonderbolt party? We would like you to come with us!”
When Spitfire heard that she got shocked. She flew closer to Wave Chill who was nicely smiling on Rainbow. “I would love to!” said their hero.
Spitfire was now even more shocked. She got even closer to Wave and looked like ‘What the fuck have you done?’
Wave just sarcastically said, “Oh come on Spitfire, smile!”
Spitfire smiled as Wave said her, put her mouth to his ear and with the sweetest voice said, “I will kill you!”
They changed their way back to the Cloudsdale to meet the other in their club. As they got there, Spitfire again met Soarin. “What happened, Spit? You look terrible,” Soarin asked with worries in his eyes.
“I can believe it. Things turned worse than I thought. I hope that I will never judge them anymore,” said Spitfire and put her head down.
Soarin came closer to her, because he knew that something really bad happened. “Don’t you want to tell me what’s wrong?”
Spitfire raised her head and had wet eyes. She wanted to speak, but Wave Chill was faster. “Hey listen everypony! This is Rainbow Dash, the fresh best young flyer who also saved our lives. Three times hurray to her and beer for everypony!”
Soarin blushed and almost started uncontrollably laughing, but he managed to calm himself. “Saved YOUR lives? So it means also yours, right?”
Spitfire put her head down and said nothing. “What were you doing, darling?” asked Soarin.
Spitfire didn’t raise her head, but managed to say something. “I was saving another pony’s life,” she said quietly.
This was too much even for Soarin. He started laughing that he couldn’t even breathe. When he stood up back from the ground, he calmed himself and asked Spitfire, “You were saving another pony’s life, when another pony saved yours? You must agree that it’s funny when somepony as young as this filly saved the best Wonderbolt.”
As was Soarin laughing he didn’t even manage to see that Spitfire left. She sat to one of the tables and just look around. Barman brought her beer, but she didn’t drink it. “I must look at it from the positive side as Soarin told me. It can’t get any worse,” she thought, but it wasn’t right guessing.
After about half an hour, Rainbow came to Spitfire. But she was totally drunk. “Hello Spitfire! What’s wrong with you? You don’t drink alcohol?”
“Great, and now even this thing will bother me,” Spitfire thought when Rainbow came to her, but she didn’t say that out loud. “Well, I do drink, but not now and not with you.”
“Oh come on! What happened to you Spit?” asked Rainbow coming even closer to Spitfire.
“First thing, don’t come so close and second don’t dare to call me Spit,” barked back Spitfire and moved her chair further from Dash who sat next to her.
Rainbow Dash was still smiling and again moved closer to Spitfire, but not that close as she was. “Will you drink that beer?” asked Rainbow, picking the beer and drinking it.
“Now I think that no,” replied Spitfire, watching Dash drinking it. After she drank it, what took like six seconds, Spitfire saw that Dash is getting pretty fast drunk. “Ehm, how much did you already drank?” asked Spitfire with disgusted face.
Rainbow smiled even more. “Not that much. I can drink even more. Do you want to see?”
“No, no, no. You already look terribly.”
“But you are beautiful!” said completely drunk Dash.
“What?” asked confused orange pegasus.
“Nothing,” replied Rainbow and lay down on Spitfire. “Dash feel bad, Dash sleep!”
Spitfire jumped out of her seat, so Rainbow fell down on the ground. “What?! No, you won’t sleep on me!”
Rainbow raised her head with half closed eyes and caught Spitfires leg, making a pillow of it. “Dash sleep!” said again Dash, closing her eyes and pulling Spitfire’s leg closer to her.
“We will see!” said Spitfire with spiteful smile and flew to the top of the club. When she reached it she looked down. Dash wasn’t there, but something was still holding her. Suddenly, Spitfire could feel a small gust of wind coming from the ground. She looked under herself and saw how is that cyan pony fluttering with wings and still holding her leg. “You’re kidding, right?”
“Hmm... sooo soft!” said Dash grabbing her favourite Wonderbolt’s leg even stronger.
Spitfire flew slowly down back on her chair. “You’ve won,” she said sadly and sat back on her chair. But as she did so, Dash climbed again up and put her head on Spitfire’s legs, facing the table.
Minutes passed so slowly and Dash still couldn’t find good position for falling asleep. Suddenly she started sniffing, what made Spitfire even more nervous. “Hmm... what’s that?”
“What?” asked Spitfire, getting deeper in her chair.
“That scent. It’s somehow familiar,” said Dash and raised her head.
“Scent?!” again asked Spitfire and tried to get even deeper in the chair.
“Where is it coming from?” Dash curiously asked herself. She started sniffing all around Spitfire. She started from hooves on Spitfire’s hind legs, slowly getting up. When she was too close to the rest of Spitfire’s body, the orange pony suddenly stood up. Dash managed to put hooves around her. As the gravitation worked, Dash’s head fell right into Spitfire’s crotch. “Ahh, got it! From here it comes! It smells like my grandma,” said Dash and raised her head so she saw Spitfire’s red face. “Can I call you grandma, Spitfire?” asked Rainbow with very drunk smile on her face.
Spitfire was totally shocked. “Do I really smell like her grandmother?” she thought for herself. After a while, when she again focused her mind, she coldly said, “No!”
Dash’s face turned very sad, “Oh, that’s a pity. Don’t you want to sit down again? This is uncomfortable.”
Spitfire sat again down, so Dash could lie back down as close to Spitfire as she could.
The orange mare thought that Dash will finally fall asleep and she will be able run away from her, but after a while, drunken Lightning Streak came to them. “Ehm Spitfire, I was wondering-” he said, but suddenly he started smiling and shouted, “-Oh, SLEEPING TIME!”
Spitfire’s eyes widely opened when she heard him. Streak quickly ran on the remaining chair, what was next to Spitfire, and put his head on Spitfire’s knees, facing Rainbow. “Helloooo Rainboooow!”
Rainbow smiled and replied, “Helloooo. How areeee youuuu?”
Streak also smiled. “Fiiiiine! This pillow is just awesome.”
“And it has awesome scent! Sniff it! It smells like my grandma,” said Dash in excitement and raised her head.
Spitfire was afraid that Streak will really do what Dash told him. And he did. His nose went right into Spitfire’s crotch. She opened her eyes widely, blushed and extender her neck. “Hmm... I must admit that your grandmother smells great!” said smiling Streak.
But this was last thing what Spitfire could endure. “I have enough of this!” she shouted and stood up, so they both fell down. Streak fell on the ground and Dash on him. But they saw how was Spitfire trying to get away so each caught one of her hind legs.
She flew up and tried to get of the club. As they got out Dash had very nasty idea. “Hey Streak, what will happen if we will stop flying?” asked Dash and giggled. Streak smiled too and nodded in agreement.
“Guys, you can do anything, but don’t do-” Spitfire wanted to finish her sentence, but suddenly she had to pull her, Streak’s and Dash’s body up to skies. But they were still falling down. “Even when Soarin gets drunk, he doesn’t act like you!”
Suddenly a voice came from the club. “Where are you going? The cocktail party just begins!”
Dash and Streak looked at themselves. They smiled, let Spitfire go and flew back to the club. Spitfire turned her head to see who it was. It was Soarin and when he saw that Spitfire is looking at him he blinked and smiled on her. Spitfire was now very glad that she has him, but returning to club would be very risky so she flew back home.
She was glad that she was finally home, but still slightly disappointed that Soarin didn’t came to her whole night. She then opened the door, turned on the lights and closed the door as she walked in. When was her whole cloud home alight, she slowly looked around like she was in this house for the very first time. After a while she put on her pyjamas and went to bed. As she lay down somepony knocked on the door. She didn’t want to open them, so she stood in bed.
A voice came from the other side, “Spit? I know you are there. And I think that you aren’t asleep.”
Spitfire recognized that voice. I was Soarin. She ran to the door and opened them. And really. Absolutely sober Soarin stood there with wine bottle in his mouth. He put it down and said, “I’m sorry that I’ve laughed at you. It wasn’t nice from me. You are my marefriend and I was like-”
Spitfire put hoof on his mouth and with smile on her face and tears in her eyes said, “Don’t talk so much.”
