But before Apple Bloom could answer, the door suddenly opened, revealing a smiling Ms. Cheerilee.
“Okay, everypony, please take your seats. Class is starting.” Apple Bloom let out a sigh before motioning her friends to go sit down with her. Finally, everypony was sitting quietly, watching as their teacher began to speak.
“Good morning, students. As you all know already, today is the day I will be assigning you all groups for your big spring break science project. First, I will explain to you exactly what you will be doing, so listen closely.” She then started passing out sheets of information and continued.
“As you all know, we have been talking about various things about nature in the past few weeks of class. So now it’s time for you to go out on your own, and see for yourself the wonderfulness of nature, of course, from a scientific point of view. In your teams, you will decide on a topic together, and then you will need to go out and document whatever you’re researching. You can use pictures, notes, and drawings, anything that can be used to record information. You will then have to write a three page report about it. When you turn it in, I expect to see all the research and of course the report. This assignment is due on the first day after spring break. Any questions?”
A couple of ponies raised their hooves, but Diamond didn’t pay attention to them while glancing at Silver Spoon, smiling.
“What do you think we should research?” Silver Spoon mouthed. Diamond put a hoof to her chin, trying to come up with something.
“Alright then, if that’s all the questions, I guess I can begin assigning groups. I’ve paired you together randomly, so there is no reason to think I am unfairly choosing who I think should go together,” stated Ms. Cheerilee. She cleared her throat and started listing the names. She went through the first few groups, earning a few “yes!”’s and inevitably a few groans.
“Sweetie Belle, and… Scootaloo,” she read out. The two fillies gave each other a high-hoof.
“Silver Spoon and Snails.” At this, both Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon gapped at each other in shock, but before they could protest, their teacher was already reading the next group out loud.
“Apple Bloom and…” Apple Bloom stared at Ms. Cheerilee, holding her breath.

The weekend was rather uneventful to Diamond Tiara. She and Apple Bloom had arranged to meet at Sweet Apple Acres for the first time on the day after Winter Wrap Up, a day which unfortunately came too soon. Diamond Tiara walked up to the front porch of Apple Bloom’s house, and rung the door bell. Apple Jack answered the door.
“Well howdy there, sugar cube. I assume you’re here to start that science project thingy with Apple Bloom?” Already annoyed, Diamond nodded her head.
“Alright then, come on in. She’s upstairs in her room,” said the orange mare, letting her in. After wiping her hooves on the door mat, Diamond made her way up the stairs.
“Hey, blank-flank, where are you? It’s time to start working on our school project,” Diamond called out, looking for her project partner.
“Over here, Diamond,” Apple Bloom called out from her room. Diamond made her way to the sound of her voice, and found Apple Bloom and her room easily. Her room was rather tidy, except for the large stack of books on her floor. It looked like she had already started, searching for a topic for the two, all the while hoping to find something quick and easy. Without saying a word, Diamond picked out a book, and started her own research.
“So, what are we doing this project on, blank-flank?” Diamond said casually.
“If you’re gonna be in mah room and mah house then can ya please stop calling me that? It’s Apple Bloom.”
“Sigh, fine, what are we doing this project on, Apple Bloom?” replied Diamond, putting a mocking emphasis on her rival’s name.
“Ah was hoping we could do something quick and simple. So how about we do our project on birds?”
“That sounds fine.”

The two fillies worked for two hours, writing down any information that would be useful to them. Finally catching up with herself, she shook her head and tried to continue the sentence she was reading again, only to find herself returning to the trance yet again. Once again, it was silent, minus the ambient sounds of nature, including what they sought after: birds.
