“Blank Flank!” “Loser!” “Worthless Freak!” “Hey isn’t he that stallion with no cutie mark?” “Wow a full grown stallion with no cutie mark? How pathetic!” Speedy tried everything he could to fly away, but the voices kept going on and going and going. No matter what direction he flew, he was trapped in what looked like endless darkness. He couldn’t escape, but then a sudden tremor quickly dispelled the voices and the darkness. The light gray Pegasus with violet eyes and crystal blue mane woke up panting and sweating. “Just another nightmare.” Said the sweating Pegasus. The sudden tremor was just the train car that he was riding in; it hit a bump on the tracks and jumped into the air slightly jostling everypony on-board.
Speedy was heading on a one-way trip to Ponyville from Baltimare. He couldn’t take the ridicule and the strange looks he kept getting living in the large bustling city. Everyday he couldn’t walk down the streets without other ponies laughing or staring at him. Even the young fillies and colts made fun of him, but he couldn’t blame them. Speedy is unique, in the sense that he is a full-grown stallion (although still young) with no cutie mark. That one mark, on a pony’s flank that showed ones true purpose in life; it was a mark that every pony prided itself on. “Am I really worthless? Do I have no purpose in life?” Speedy said to himself as he stared at the blank spot on his flank. The train car kept moving along the tracks; it was a long train ride from Baltimare to Ponyville, a 3-day trip with limited stops. It was the last day of the train ride; Speedy was expected to make it to Ponyville tomorrow morning. A fresh start to a new life, Speedy was excited and anxious. He got sick of the fast pace life of the large metropolitan city of Baltimare, he wanted life to slow down to a comfortable pace, and hopefully not attract a bunch of attention on himself like he did back in Baltimare. Ponyville seemed to be the perfect place, or at least he hopes.
Speedy signed up for a job to work for the Ponyville weather control team. He jumped on the opportunity when he saw the help wanted sign and sign up sheet posted at the Baltimare job fair. The pay was decent and a chance to leave Baltimare behind was more then enough for him to take this job. Before signing up for the job in Ponyville, Speedy did a bunch of low-paying odd jobs to make it to the next day. Basically living off of every paycheck. He had also been sleeping on the streets, since he couldn’t afford housing of any sorts and no family or friends to live with. Speedy was an orphan; at a young age he was left at an orphan’s home. He remember very little to almost nothing about his parents, he had no mother that he knew of and all he can remember about his father is him leaving him at the orphanage and flying off. He had no relatives either. So he lived at the orphanage for the majority of his foal hood, then bounced around a few foster homes, and then finally ended up on the streets.
It was almost sunrise, as the sun raised over the mountains, the majestic light banished the darkness every step it raised. Speedy looked out the window of his train car; the verdant hills were lush with grass. The fields were full of flowers of many colors. You couldn’t see these beautiful sights in Baltimare. All you saw in Baltimare was concrete buildings, paved roads, and smog from the industrial factories. Speedy reached for his saddlebag and pulled out a large brown book. It was a diary, full of letters to a brother that speedy never had. Speedy wasn’t the most social colt or stallion for that matter, he had a hard time making friends. Most of the time the other colts and fillies at the orphan home and school would just pick on him, call him names, and sometimes even beat him up. So to cope with the isolation and loneliness he started writing a diary. Speedy saw some of the other foal at school playing with their older brothers and envied them. He craved a big brother more than anything. A big brother, someone there to guide him through life as any big brother would. A big brother that would mentor him, comfort him, protect him, and most importantly love him. One day, while coming home from school he found a large black book with beautiful gold inlays in the middle of the sidewalk. He picked it up and opened it; at that very moment he felt a strange sensation. He felt warm and tight, almost as if somepony or something was holding him in a tight hug. The book was empty with blank pages. Speedy didn’t have money to buy a diary, so he saw the opportunity and took it. Since then he used it as a diary. Speedy flipped through the large book and started reading over some of his older entries. He was rather young when he started writing to his brother. Many of his older entries had tons of misspellings, grammatical errors, and even a few backwards letters. His earliest entries were primary written in crayon and marker. Some were short as a few sentences while others last pages and pages. As speedy kept flipping through the pages he was reminded of his old life. He was pretty miserable during this time, but for some reason reading some of these old entries gave him a good feeling of nostalgia. He wrote his brother at least once a day, sometimes even more. Speedy only comfort was the letters to his brother. He often dreamed about what his brother was like. He would be wise, strong, intelligent, protective, and most importantly loving. In his dreams he did everything that other colts did with their big brothers. His brother was alive in his dreams. There was a time that he stopped writing letters and dreaming about his brother, when he got older he realized how silly it was to have an imaginary brother. But now that a new chapter in Speedy’s life is here, Speedy felt that an entry was overdue. Speedy flipped to a blank page and started an entry.
Dear Brother,
Wow we haven’t talked for a while…Well I’m leaving Baltimare behind. And it feels amazing! To leave the big city life behind and live in quiet and serene town is a good change of pace. I got a decent paying job as a member of the Ponyville weather team. I should be excited, but I’m nervous about Ponyville. I mean, what if they view me as an outcast. What if it’s just Baltimare all over again? Ponyville is a small town, and I heard the pony folks there are extremely kind, but I can’t help but to be nervous. Well the train should be arriving within the hour, but I’ll write back soon.
Sincerely,
Speedy
As soon as Speedy closed the diary he saw a Pegasus stallion sitting next to him. He had a gray coat that was slightly darker than Speedy’s. He had a slick jet-black mane and violet eyes just like speedy. “Don’t worry kid, your gonna be fine.” Said the strange Pegasus. The mere sight of this stranger scared the living crap out of Speedy. Speedy was so scared that he jumped and hit is head on the overhead compartment of his seat. Speedy was so spooked that he started to hyperventilate “Easy bro easy. Calm down.” the strange Pegasus spoke in a deep soothing voice. “Whh whoo are you?” said Speedy with a quiver in his voice. “Oh comon! You don’t recognize your own brother? I should be offended.” the strange Pegasus replied in an annoyed tone. Speedy was now even more confused. He didn’t have a brother or any siblings for that matter. “Come to think of it. I’m not sure if I should be more pissed off at the fact that you don’t recognize me or the fact you haven’t written to me in years.” The Pegasus said in an even more annoyed tone. Then it finally hit Speedy. Could this be the brother that he imagined back when he was just a young colt? “No…no way. Impossible!” Speedy thought to himself. You would think that many would be swirling in his head. But the mere fact that his “brother” is sitting right next to him was more than enough for Speedy. He didn’t question why or how, just the fact that he is no longer alone was an amazing feeling. That brother he had imagined, the brother that he played with in his dreams, the brother he so craved as a small colt is right in front of him.
The train is supposed to arrive at Ponyville anytime now. Speedy spent the time talking to his brother. They shared a few laughs and talked about the good time they had with each other in Speedy’s dreams. The sound of their conversation attracted the attention of the passenger sitting across from them. An old unicorn mare glanced that the conversation only to be bewildered by the fact that it was only a single pony having a conversation with himself. The mare thought to herself, “What a strange young stallion.” The train started to slow down, Speedy glanced out the train car’s window and at a distance he saw the Ponyville train station. He was finally here. “I’m excited big brother, It so great to have you here with me now. Maybe I’ll make a whole bunch of friends and even maybe find that very special somepony!” Speedy said with enthusiasm. His big brother replied, “Haha don’t get carried away there. Just remember there is no pony more important to you in your life than me right?” “Of course big brother!” Speedy replied. The train came to a halt; the conductor was walking around waking up the sleeping passengers. The conductor is nearing Speedy; “Well I’ll see you later.” Said big brother. “Wait! Where you going? And what if I need you?” Speedy replied frantically. Big brother released a big sigh, “Don’t worry, Big brother is always watching.” The conductor, now right next to Speedy, placed his hoof on Speedy’s shoulder. “Welcome to Ponyville!” Said with enthusiasm. Speedy didn’t reply to the conductor. Speedy turned his head around to where his brother was sitting. He was gone. As if he vanished into thin air.
