Introduction

All stories need a beginning.

“I’m so sorry…” the stallion whispered at the side of the hospital bed. A single tear fell from the corner of his eye as he held onto the mare’s hoof, landing on the bed. Knowing nothing else to do, he allowed his head to fall over and rest on her slowly moving chest. Bandages covered a third of her body, stopping blood from seeping through. And the worst part was that he knew this was his fault.

“I… I… Don’t… Don’t blame… yourself,” the mare muttered weakly to the sobbing stallion. “You… You made me… happy.” The stallion sniffled and wiped his eyes as he looked up at the purple eyes staring back at him. The eyes he had fallen in love with… The eyes he knew he’d never see again.

“I said I’d protect you… I failed.”

“No… You… tried. But you… can still… li-live… for both… of us…” the mare said even more weakly. He looked away as tears began to once again fall freely from his eyes; he couldn't bear to watch the mare he loved struggle to simply speak.

“I can’t… I can’t live without you,” he sobbed. He slowly looked back up as he felt her hoof rest upon his. And he saw her smile.

“I’ll… always be with you. In our promise…”

“Our promise…” he repeated, remembering that night.

“Please… Live… your life. If… if not for yourself. Then… then…”

“For you…” he finished as he stared into her eyes, easily seeing the reflection of his own purple eyes in hers.

“For… us…”

“I will… I promise…” he whispered. Only this time… there was no response.
