Trying to be Romantic

"I just don't wanna miss you toni- Ugh, no!"

Rainbow Dash slammed a hoof down on the ground. "It doesn't sound right!" She growled, looking at her reflection in the pond. The pony that looked back at her was a mess; messy (more than usual) mane, tired eyes and a very frustrated look. She sighed and flopped to the ground, putting her hooves over her eyes and groaning.

She was exhausted.

"I just can't get this song right." She muttered bitterly. Her friends had told her that her singing was awesome, but every time she was alone she could just pick everything apart.

Yer a fantastic singer Dash!

I never thought you'd be the kind of pony to sing a love song! Oh, was that mean? Um... Sorry...

Wow Dashie, you're sure to wow her!

I think she'll love it Rainbow Dash.

All of her friends, except her.

Dash's mind filled with three blue diamonds, a curled and glossy purple mane and blue eyes. She groaned again and rubbed her own magenta eyes. "Why does," She gagged, "Love have to be so complicated!" She snapped at her reflection.

Pissed off Dash glared back, but remained silent.

"I'm going bonkers." She concluded and stood up, shaking grass from her coat. As she did this, she didn't notice the unicorn trotting up behind her.

"Please Rainbow Dash, must you do that? You're getting grass all over my new sweater."

Rainbow froze at the whining voice. Pink creeped across her face and she turned to see none other than the source of her problems standing right there.

Rarity was still pouting. She was sporting a pale blue sweater that ended around her waist. The sleeves went down to her front ankles and the material looked smooth, like any other shirt or casual dress. It was also covered in grass from Rainbow's previous shaking of her columbia blue fur.

Damnit why does she have to wear a sweater that makes her look sexier at this moment? Rainbow thought. "S-Sorry Rares, lemme help you get it off." She stepped over and helped her friend brush the grass off, being careful not to get the sweater dirtier. She knew Rarity would throw a hissy fit if she did, and nobody liked a rampaging Rarity.

Rarity smiled at the pegasus when the grass was brushed off. "Thank you Rainbow Dash, that saved me a trip to my washing machine." She beamed.

Now's the time. "Um... Say Rarity?" Rainbow asked, staring at her slightly dirty blue hooves next to the unicorn's impossibly clean white ones.

"Yes Rainbow Dash?"

Rainbow gulped. "I was wondering if you'd like to, you know..." Don't say 'go on a date', don't say 'go out with me'... "Meet up tonight. Go to Sugarcube Corner, maybe go to the park." She winced a bit and looked away, expecting the designer to give her a verbal lashing about everything wrong with her question, homosexuality and Rainbow Dash herself.

Rarity felt a tinge of pink come to her cheeks. She knew that her friend was trying to conceal the fact that she was asking her out on a date, but she was doing a poor job of concealing it. I suppose I could just humor her for the evening... She thought. "I'd love to! It's been such a long time since the two of us did anything together." She squealed, a bright smile on her face.

The pegasus smiled, the feathers on her wings ruffling slightly in her excitement. "Great! See you tonight at um... 7:00?" She asked, excitement going to nervousness and she rubbed the back of her neck with a hoof.

"7:00? Sounds good, see you then!" Rarity called. With that, she trotted away, a smile on her face.

Dash could've shot through the metaphorical roof at that moment. She shot into the air and spun around, pumping her hoof victoriously. "Aw yeah!" She exclaimed loudly. After a moment of being suspended in midair, she fluttered back down and started practicing the song again,

"And I'd give up forever to touch yo- No! Ugh, Celestia damnit..."

The clock read 7:00pm.

Rainbow Dash fidgeted nervously outside Carousel Boutique, biting her lip slightly. She'd actually done more than comb her mane for once, she'd actually gotten ready for tonight.

First was her mane. The red, orange and yellow of her mane had been combed through nicely to fall flat above her eyes, each color a thick stripe that came to an even end at the base. The green, blue and purple back had been brushed through in a similar style, but the colors overlapped so that they almost swirled and twisted together and it fell nicely over one shoulder. Her tail was flat and ribbon-y, kind of like Twilight's style. Each color was a curved line towards the bottom of her tail and it greatly resembled a real rainbow.

She was wearing a pale purple sweater, but unlike the one Rarity had been in earlier it was soft and wooly and brought a welcome warmth for the slightly chilly weather.

Come on Dash, be a mare. She thought to herself. Shakily raising her hoof, she knocked on the door, a bit firmer than she intended to. She stepped back as the door opened, and her jaw nearly dropped.

Rarity had replaced her usual robin eggshell blue eyeshadow with pale lilac. She wasn't wearing much, just a rosette scarf with paler stripes wrapped loosely around her neck. But her mane seemed glossier and sparklier.
