Big Macintosh works as a Private Detective in Canterlot, a corrupt citadel run by "The Princesses", a duo of ruthless women. He had left Ponyville behind a long time ago to pursue his career in Canterlot with his young assistant, Twilight Sparkle, but the past comes back in the form of Fluttershy bearing news that Granny Smith is terminally ill. He decides to return to Ponyville, but how much would have changed since he left? And would he even be welcome?
