Last Wish
Twilight directed her view at the ground with a clearly frightened expression on her face and frowned while biting her lower lip, but was still able to maintain her composure. After all, she had already settled with the fact that her life would end eventually, its just that she didn't expect it to happen so soon. "Nurse Redheart, I‘d like to ask two favors of you," she calmly said, raising her head again to look the white mare deep into her green eyes which were full of sympathy. "First of all, I want you to give me some kind of medication, something that will help me stay awake and enables me to enjoy every moment that I have left. I already feel kind of tired, but I’m definitely not ready to go to sleep yet. I still have a lot to do, so many things which I've postponed because I was always busy keeping up with my duties... and perhaps, it’s also because I was living under the fake imagination that everything was perfect like it was," she said with slightly melancholic voice.
Redheart nodded understandingly. "And what would be the second thing?" she softly asked, trying to hold back the sorrowful tears that had gathered in the corners of her eyes.
"I want to leave here. I just don’t want to die inside this room. I want to visit Cloudsdale once again. Ages have passed since I was there last time. I need to talk to an old friend I haven't seen for years. We always used to spend so much time together, but I haven't talked to her since..." said Twilight with glimmering eyes as her weakened voice slowly trailed off. She coughed heavily several times and gasped for breath, but eventually was able to continue after a minute.
"I want to go out and take a last walk in the snow and feel the biting cold on my hooves once again. I can’t remember having done so since the last winter wrap-up I participated back in the days before I became princess and always was so afraid of catching a cold and not being able to comply with my duties then," Twilight dwelled in memories of the most joyful times of her life, a slightly depressed sigh escaping her lips.
"I want to feel the snowflakes falling on my snout and catch them with my tongue as I did back when I was a little filly. I want to see my dear mother once again, let me be taken into a lovely embrace only a mother can give and let my emotions run wild, unashamed of showing my feelings to her and weep away my very fears of dying," she added with some hot tears of regret running down her face.
"I want to visit princess Celestia, take a walk through the palace and its garden and look at all those stone statues I never really cared about, but which are holding stories of thousands of years within them. I need to thank the princess for the beautiful life she enabled me to live, and for all the friends I would never have met if she hadn't have sent me to Ponyville."
Twilight took a short break, taking in the thought that after all, it was just a single day she had left and that there wasn’t enough time to do all these things by any possibility.
“But it is utmost important for me to get to Cloudsdale and see Rainbow Dash once again. I want to tell her that I love her and that I’m deeply sorry for everything that has happened. I really don’t want to leave things as they are now. Even if it should be for just one day, I want to be on good terms again with the only mare I’ve ever loved before leaving this world.”
When Twilight had finished speaking, the room was filled with an oppressive silence. She and Redheart looked each other deep in their eyes, torn by all kinds of emotions, thinking about the endless list of possibilities a mere day could offer.
Shaken by the imagination that a pony, even a princess, was going to be torn from the living this young, the nurse was swallowing a ball that had formed in her throat. “I’ll let the doctor know and prepare everything to get you to Cloudsdale as soon as possible,” she said with a clearly saddened voice before she left the room. As the door had closed behind her, Redheart weakly sobbed and wasn’t able to suppress tears any longer.
Twilight looked out of the window into the gloomy night. At the thought that she had just a single day to make up for a whole life, she sighed heavily. Yet, if she would be able to spend just half of it with a certain blue pegasus, it certainly was worth living fast. Between hot tears which were burning narrow lanes in Twilight’s cheeks, a little smile grew on her face.
