My little ponies, I’m sure you are all well acquainted with the story of our dear princesses; but have you ever wondered what happened before all of that? Before the rule of Celestia and before the rise of Nightmare Moon. Are you curious about how our rulers came to be what they are today? Well if you are, then it is probably best for us to start all the way from the beginning. From a time just after the founding of Equestria. A time in which the three races lived together in harmony and kept the world in balance.

It was a brilliant summer morning in a small village called Canterlot at the base of a mountain. It was the largest village in all of Equestria. Every filly and colt was playing while the mares and stallions watched and worked. But there was a young couple who were indoors. Their names were Sol and Umbra.

Sol was a strong stallion and unicorn. He had a glossy white coat with a brilliant fiery, red and orange mane. His magic prowess was widely known around neighboring villages. Some say he was even the strongest unicorn alive at the time. He was happily married to Umbra. She was a petite but swift pegasus with a coat that reflected the deep blue of the midnight sky. Her mane was a mysterious silver.

They were inside their home which was located near the center of town. Their house contained many trohpies that Sol had won in magic duels, as well as a fair number that Umbra had won in races. The home was a fair enough size, it could easily hold a another pony in it besides the two of them. Which was very convenient because Umbra was in the middle of giving birth to their first child.

“It's alright Umbra, your doing fine! Take deep breaths and push.”

Sol was trying his best to comfort his wife in her pain.

“AAAAAAGGGGHHHHHH!”

Umbra released an other-worldly scream that was shortly accompanied by a soft crying.

Sol walked behind his wife and nuzzled against her.

“You did great honey. She’s beautiful!”

Umbra looked up to Sol, trying to recover from all the strain she just endured, and asked, “What should we name her, dear?”

As Sol gazed over his new born, he observed the glossiness in her white coat, although not as glossy as his own. Her eyes and mane were a bright pink. And on her head stood a small horn. Sol was elated by the fact that his daughter had a horn. He would teach her everything he knew about magic!

Sol looked at his wife. “I will raise our daughter to be a great and powerful unicorn! I will teach her everything I know about magic. She deserves a name that will reflect just how amazing she will be.”

He stopped briefly and thought it over, and like a hoof to the face it hit him. He picked her up with his magic, surrounding their small foal in an orange glow.

“Your power will be as vast as the celestial sky above us, my daughter, and because of that your name shall be Celestia.”

Umbra closed her eyes and let the idea sink in. “Celestia…”

She looked Sol in the eyes and smiled, “I love it!”

Sol returned Celestia to Umbra’s motherly arms. They sat for hours just looking at their daughter and admiring what they had brought into the world. Time escaped them and they fell silently asleep as the moon rose over the horizon.

The sun rose over the horizon. A new day was dawning. The dawn of the new lives of Sol and Umbra, along with their newly born daughter Celestia. All of Canterlot was stirring. Stallions went off to work while the mares stayed at home with the children, and all the fillies and colts played and basked in the sun. The sun was bright and joyful that morning as it graced it light on Sol and Umbra's home. It shone through the window, and glowed down on Celestia's face. She woke up, but she did not cry. Instead she laughed and giggled at the warmth the sun brought. Sol and Umbra both woke up from to their daughter's joyful giggles.

"Whats this?" Sol looked puzzled as he looked down at his daughter smiling. "Whats got her in such a good mood?"

He let out a hearty laugh as he nuzzled his head against her.

Umbra noticed that Celestia was looking out the window towards the sun. She was perplexed, and had an idea.

"Sol, dear, could you please close the window? It's shining right on Celestia."

"Of course!"

Sol got up and closed the shutters to the window. Almost immediately Celestia began to cry, all according to Umbra's assumption.

"Well that's strange! She was cheery just a second ago!"

Sol picked her up with his magic and began to bounce and rock her but her crying did not cease. Umbra took her back and requested that Sol open the window back up.

"You want me to open them up? Right after you asked me to close them?"

With a confused look, Sol went back over to the window and opened it up. Umbra positioned Celestia and made sure she was in the sunlight. And again just as quickly as she had started crying, she started laughing again. Sol scratched his head with his hoof.

"Well this one sure is a mystery!"

Umbra rolled her eyes at her husband. "Sol I swear, you may be the most powerful Unicorn around but you are so dense! Celestia is laughing because she's in the sun!"

She looked down at her daughter with a happy look, obviously pleased with how her daughter was reacting to the world already. She held her close in her hooves and whispered, "You are just like your father aren't you!"

"What was that?"

"Oh nothing!"

She laughed at her husband. He tried to get it out of her, but she smacked him in the face with her wing and laughed even harder. Sol shook his face in shock and continued to insist. Umbra just continued to laugh while cradling Celestia.

"It's just between us girls!"

Almost as if on que, the little foal giggled and laughed at her father along with her mother.
