Along Came a Broken Heart
Why her? why her? The only words I can think to say. I lay there holding the limp Pegasus in my hooves, knowing that I would never be able to see her again. A nurse pulls me away from my broken friend. Why her?, why her? I still remember that horrible day. The day my heart was shattered never to be fixed. The day where the darkness and sorrow swallowed me. The day my life changed forever. The day when kindness died. The story I am about to tell you is not for those with weak hearts. It is the story of my heart ache, the story of my sorrow, and the story of my suffering.
I fly through the sky, a smile plastered to my face. Today was the day, Luna wanted me to be her personal guard. I was thrilled as ever. It was quite the honor to be one of her personal guards. I grinned widely at the idea of me being dressed in the night guards armor. I zip through the clouds, watching ponies from below admire my flying. I was a lot like my friend Rainbow Dash, I liked to show off whenever I could get ponies attention.
Ever since the destruction of the factory, my life has been a whole lot better. Ponies haven't tried to hurt me, And word is my daughter has been seen roaming the streets looking for me. I also made a few friends in the past few years. When I escaped the factory Ponies really didn't like me. An old friend and some of his lackeys attacked me the moment I set hoof in Ponyville. I tried to reason with them, but they heard none of it. They kicked the shit out of me. All I remember after that is waking up in a room where Twilight Sparkle was sitting at my bedside. She asked me questions and I answered them. Twilight's heart broke, But she was true to the promise she made to me that day. A little while after I talked to her a knock came to her door. Five ponies walked in. Pinkie Pie, The moment she saw me she nearly crushed me to death with a hug, Rainbow Dash; She was the one who pulled Pinkie Pie off me and introduced herself, Applejack; Who the moment she met me offered me a job at the farm, witch I humbly accepted, Then there was Rarity who for some unknown reason started to style my mane, lastly, Fluttershy.
Let me ask you a question. Have you ever been in love? I have; From the first moment I met Fluttershy, I loved her. Her bright yellow coat was like the sun, bright and warm. Her soft eyes the color of the purest emeralds, her mane flowed like the waves of the ocean. Her voice; oh god her voice, like a chorus of angels; but soft as the moons kiss. Sadly though I never really got to tell her how I feel about her. Some would call me a coward, others would call me spineless, but the truth is I have this feeling deep inside that she would say no. Ok so maybe that makes me a coward but come on. Why would she go with me? I am nothing special. I am just a Pegasus with some bad memories and even worse social skills.
I continue to fly towards my destination when a voice catches my ear.
"STORM!" The voice was very familiar to me. It almost sounded like Rainbow Dash. I turn around just in time to see Dash smash into me. We fell through the clouds and into the streets of Ponyville. I sat up, groaning in pain. Dash did the same.
"For fuck's sake Dash! watch where your-" Before I could finish I got a good look at Dash. She looked frantic and saddened by something. Rainbow Dash ran to me and hugged me, tears fell from her eyes and onto my fur.
"Dashie... What's wrong?" I asked now very worried. Dash looked at me and buried her face in my chest. What she said chilled me to the core.
"S-Storm--S-shy's dy-dying--" Her words cut through me like a blade. I held her close to me and tried to calm her down.
"What do you mean dying? Whats wrong with her? Does Illumi Nite know? " I ask with a shaky voice. Dash looked up at me and sighed. She wiped her tears and began to explain.
"Well when she-she was feeding her animals sh-she um collapsed to the ground. I got her to the hospital and they said she had a heart attack. They did some tests and...they found out her heart is too small for her body, The doctor said she has only so long to live... Storm...She wants to see you." Dash said with a voice as quiet as shy's. I started to cry. Never in my life have I cried, except for when Nimble died. My world froze around me and I wept in Dashie's hooves. She looked at me with sorrow plastered on her face.
"Illumi's at the hospital Storm..." Dash said again. I nodded. It was all I could do.
"Storm... The others are waiting for you at the hospital... I'll meet you there..." Dashie hugs me tightly and flies away. I stood there, unable to move. Fluttershy, the one pony who truely got me, my best friend,and my secret love, was going to die. I started to shake, and then I took off towards the hospital, My tears following me the entire way there.

I have never flown faster in my entire life. All that was on my mind was Fluttershy. My mind was racing the entire time I was flying.
" Why her? For the love of Celestia why her!?" I thought as I hold back the stinging of the tears that have plastered my face. I loved her, that much I needed to tell her before, well, I don't want to think about that. As I arrive at my destination and see that my friends are standing near the entrance of the hospital. I landed and immediately wrapped Twilight in a hug and cried on her shoulder. Twilight hugged right back and softly stroked my mane.
"Shh... It's okay Storm... I am here for you..." Twilight said with a sad tone. I held onto her tighter as she stroked my mane.
"Damn it why her?... Why Shy?" I said through the tears that now stained the ground and Twilight's mane. Twilight sighed and continued to stroke my mane as a mother would her sons when he was upset.
"I don't know Storm... I just don't know..." Twilight said. I felt a hoof fall upon my back. I looked up to see Pinkie Pie, her mane straight and dark. She gave me her best smile and spoke.
"S-Storm....Please don't cry...Fluttershy wouldn't want you to be sad... She would want you to...smile... So please..try to stay happy...for her..." She then wrapped me in the biggest hug she could muster. I hugged her back and smiled a weak smile.
"Okay Pinkie...I-I will try.... For Shy..." I said with a shaky voice. Pinkie smiled and hugged me tighter. I felt another hoof on my back. Rarity was looking up at me smiling with a tear in her eye.
"If Fluttershy deserved anypony, It would be you darling..." She said choking on sobs. I started to tear up and everypony around me hugged me. I noticed something wrong though.
"Someponies missing...Wheres Illumi..." Storm asked. Applejack frowned and pointed to her. Illumi Nite was standing near the door, not saying a word. She was looking at the ground with the saddest face I have ever seen. I released the hug and walked over to her. I placed a hoof on her back and held her close. Illumi Nite didn't hesitate, she wrapped me in a hug and began to sob. I held her close and began to stroke her mane.
"Shhhh...I am here... No more tears..." I said soothingly. Fluttershy was like a mother to Illumi Nite. Fluttershy raised her from a foal. It broke my heart to see her this way. Illumi Nite looked at me with tears in her eyes and then she spoke.
"W-why..." She said as tears were still flooding out of her eyes. I sighed and began to tear up.
"I don't know Illumi... I don't know..." I say suppressing the tears from falling, to no avail. They came faster then anything and I held to Illumi Nite and sobbed with her. I felt a slight nudge. Applejack was looking at me.
"You two should go in first..." She said to witch I simply shook my head.
"N-no... As much as we want to..she's your friend first... Right Illumi?" I said. She simply nodded. Twilight smiled.
"Stom I think I speak for all of us when I say...You're by far the best friend anypony could ask for... Thank you..." She said as tears began to sting her eyes.
"Thank you." The elements said to me at the same time. Illumi Nite sighed and looked to the door and back to me with a sad look on her face. I sighed.
"Welp...I guess it's time to say...Goodbye..." I said with a heavy heart. We then marched forward, Into the darkness of sorrow that our minds have yet to discover.
Sorrow is nothing more then our happiness drowned in darkness

We entered the hospital and talked to the head nurse. She gave us a look of sadness and ushered us to her room. I held Illumi Nite's hoof the entire way, making sure if she needed a shoulder to cry on I would be there for her. The nurse said only one pony at a time could enter the room. I looked to Pinkie Pie and nodded. She sighed and put on her best face for Fluttershy and walked into the room. We all waited patiently in the waiting room; Illumi Nite never stopped crying. I held her close to me so she could cry into my shoulder. Ponies around us gave sympathetic looks. Applejack took note of this.
"I reckon these ponies feel for ya there Illumi Nite..." Illumi Nite buried her head further into my chest and whimpered. I gave a chuckle, a very weak chuckle.
"Sorry AJ but at times like this she only trusts me...." I said with a sigh. Applejack nodded.
"That's understandable.." She said. Pinkie Pie exited the room, her tears falling like rain. I frowned and set Illumi Nite down and ran to hug Pinkie. She wrapped me in a hug and cried like a newborn foal. I stroked her mane.
"S-Storm... She's in really bad shape... I-I-" I hugged her tightly and nuzzled her mane till she calmed down. Once she did she told Applejack that Flutter was ready for her. AJ tipped her hat and walked into the room. As pinkie sat down,Illumi Nite jumped on pinkie and hugged her tightly. Pinkie smiled a bit and hugged her back. I hugged both Illumi Nite and Pinkie Pie tightly. Twilight looked to me and smiled.
'As I said Storm...You're a very good friend..." She said with a sad smile. I looked up only to be hugged by Dashie.
"Thank you Storm...For being here for us..." She said through clenched jaws. I smiled and hugged her. AJ came out of the room with her hat over her face.
"Sh-she's ready for Dash now..." AJ said with a shaky voice. Dash flew into the room and AJ sat next to me. Tears began to form in her eyes. I held her close to me and stroked her mane.
"AJ... How is she?" I ask with sorrow filling my voice. Illumi Nite was as eager for an answer as I was. AJ buried her face into my chest.
"She's not doing okay at all.." She said as she cried. I held her close to me and stroked her mane. Illumi Nite began to stroke her mane as well. Dash came out stunned. Rarity went in without a word. Dash sat next to me and said nothing. I looked at her and sighed.
This shouldn't be happening... It's not her time... I thought to myself. I sighed as Rarity left the room bawling her eyes out. I stood up and helped her to the chairs where i sat her down and hugged her tightly. I looked to Twilight and nodded.
"Your up Twi..." I said with sadness. Twilight stood up and walked into the room. I sat next to Illumi Nite and poked her. She looked up and gave me a sad look.
"Look... Illumi... You go in after Twi okay... I'll be right behind you..." I said with a smile. She gave a weak smile back and hugged me tightly. As if on cue Twilight exited the room and sat down with out a word. I stood up and escorted Illumi Nite to the room and smiled.
"Go on... Take your time..." I said. Illumi Nite walked into the room and closed the door. I stood by the door to listen in. I heard Fluttershy weakly say hi and a conversation started. Then I heard something Illumi Nite say that killed me inside.
"Flu-Flu-Fluttershy... Y-Your like a mother to me..." She said. My heart sunk to the floor. I heard fluttershy weakly talk.
"I-I-know Illumi..I know... I love you so much-- t-t-t-ell St-Storm I-I am ready to see him..." She said. My heart jumped.
Well...this is it... I thought. The moment Illumi Nite exited Flutters room she hugged me and began to cry. I sighed and held her close to me.
"Sh-Shes ready for you Storm..." was all she said. She opened the door and I entered. The room was small but comfortable. It had cheery pictures up everywhere. Then I saw her. Fluttershy was hooked up to tons of machines. Her face looked tired and exhausted but still beautiful. She turned to me and smiled.
"He-hey Storm..." She said. Oh god that voice. That voice that sounded like a song with every word. I swallowed hard and sat next to her on the bed and gave my best smile.
"H-hey Fluttershy..." I say trying to hide the tears. I placed a hoof on Fluttershy's chest and sighed.
"Illumi Nite sure has gotten big hasn't she?' I ask trying to spark a conversation. Fluttershy looked at me with those gorgeous eyes and smiled weakly.
"Y-Yes she has... Storm... " She said as best as she could. I grabbed her hoof and started to tear up. Shy weakly raised a hoof to my eyes and wiped the tears away.
"Pl-Please S-Storm...D-Don't be sad..." She asked with pleading eyes. I smiled. Damn... she knew my weakness.
"Okay Fluttershy...Only cause you said so..." I said. She started to talk but then grabbed her chest in pain. I got worried.
"Shy!?" I yelled a bit only to have shy's hoof cover my mouth. I blushed a bit.
"Shhh... Storm--I--I am fine...Look I know why you're here Storm..." Fluttershy said with a weak smile. I tensed.
"I'm here cause--"
"You love me..." Fluttershy finished with a smile. I looked at her and frowned. How did she know? I thought about it for a second and smiled.
"G-guess I couldn't keep that from you forever... Yes Shy I love you... I have always loved you..." I said as a tear fell from my eye. Fluttershy smiled and placed her hoof on my face gently. A tear fell on her hoof.
"Th-that's good to hear St-storm...I lov-love you too..." She said as she started to breath slower. I got scared as her breathing slowed.
"Fluttershy!? no!! please no!!" I started to yell. Her heart monitor started to go haywire.
"Th-thank you Storm--" she pulls me close to her as the tears start to fall.
"SHY NO!!" I scream. Fluttershy kisses me on the cheek and lays on the bed, closing her eyes.
"T-take care of Illumi..." She said with her final breath. Then all was silent. Only the sound of my tears could be heard. Illumi Nite opened the door and ran in, tears in her eyes as she ran for Fluttershy. .
"N-NO! S-SHY!!" She screamed and fell onto Shy crying into her lifeless body. I grabbed Illumi Nite and rushed her out of the room where our friends awaited us. They all asked me what happened. I simply lowered my head and started to cry, That's when they all knew, Fluttershy was gone. Our hearts shattered like glass. Fluttershy was pronounced dead. Twilight looked at me and sighed.
"We need to tell Celestia Storm..." She said. I nodded and looked at Illumi Nite. Rainbow Dash looked at me and sighed.
"Take her to your place..." Dash said before flying off. Rarity looked at me but said nothing as she walked away. Pinkie hugged me and Illumi Nite and said one thing.
"Sh-shes okay now guys...Shes up there... She don't feel the pain anymore..." She then walked away. AJ gave me a sad look and walked away as well. Twilight placed a hoof on my shoulder and walked to the library. Illumi Nite and I were standing in the rain looking to the sky. Illumi Nite began to cry so I held her close to me and started to sing a song.
Sleep now my sunshine
Tonight is the night
The moon's glow will brighten your life
Please dry your eyes and rest your head
For tomorrow will bring the end of your dread
I saw that Illumi Nite had fallen asleep so I walked home. when I got to the house I laid Illumi Nite on the couch and covered her up. I sat in my chair and grabbed a picture. It was of me and Fluttershy. She looked so happy, So carefree, and now she was gone. I couldn't hold it in any longer. I hugged the picture and started to cry. A minute later a letter fell upon my floor. I opened it up and sighed. Fluttershy's funeral was tomorrow. Great just what I need. More heart break.
Those who fear death must also fear life

The day of the funeral arrived. Rainbow Dash, Rarity, Pinkie Pie, Applejack, Twilight, Illumi Nite and I were the first to arrive. The coffin they had shy in was no help whatsoever. It was a yellow color with her cutie mark on the coffin. Her grave was a statue of her. Rainbow Dash flew over to the coffin and hugged it.
"I am here Shy..All your friends are here..." She said with tears flowing down her face. Applejack walked over and placed a hoof on Dashie's back and hugged her tightly. Me and Illumi Nite stood by Fluttershy's grave, tears falling from our faces.
"S-Storm..." Illumi Nite said my name and I looked down at her.
"Is she hurting in there?" Illumi Nite asked as tears fell from her eyes. I embraced her in a hug and let her cry in my hooves.
"No. She feels no more pain..." I said as I held her close. Time went on and more and more ponies arrived at the funeral. Tears were shed and stories were told. Celestia walked up to the podium and began to speak.
"Fellow ponies... We are gathered here today to celebrate the life of a great pony. Fluttershy, element of kindness passed on yesterday of heart failure. I am deeply hurt by this. As is everypony here. Fluttershy was more then a friend to some, A sister to others and a loving daughter to some. Fluttershy was a dear friend of mine and I will miss her. I hope that she is no longer feeling any pain..." Celestia stood down from the podium and started to cry. I stood up and took the podium. I looked on as everypony listened to me. I took a deep breath and began to speak.
"Umm... My name is Stormdrift... Three years ago my life was forever changed. I know we have not been on the best terms but please hear me out. Twilight introduced me to her friends after I took a beating from my former friend. One of those friends is no longer here... Fluttershy was the first pony to truly get me... She was my best friend." I stopped to take a breath.
"During those three years of knowing Fluttershy I started to get feelings for her... But i never got the nerve to tell her... until yesterday. I then found out she had the same feelings for me..but now...Now ill never see her again. Fluttershy was the most caring pony ever. Proof of this comes in the form of Illumi Nite..." I point to Illumi Nite and give her a smile.
"Fluttershy raised her since she was a newborn... Fluttershy loved everypony... Even the ones who hurt and taunted her." I stop again and start to tear up.
"Shy... If you can hear me up there... I love you...We all love you... And we will all miss you dearly. Goodbye..." I walked down from the podium where Illumi Nite met me. She didn't say anything, she only hugged me as tight as she could and began to cry. I held her there and sighed. Twilight walked over to us and frowned.
"I-It's time to go... St-Storm uh...I don't know who it's from but this came for you..." Twilight said. She then hugged me as tight as she could and went off. The other Element holder left as well. I looked at Illumi Nite who started to shiver. I sighed and stood before Flutters grave. I started to sing:

I took a rose out of my saddlebag and placed it on her grave. Illumi Nite placed a rose of her own on the grave. I picked Illumi Nite up and walked home with the note and her on my back. When I got home I laid Illumi Nite down and covered her up. I sat in my chair and sighed. I opened the letter and read it. What I read brought tears to my eyes.
Dear Storm,
I am writing to you cause I don't know how to say this in person. I love you...I have always loved you Storm. I can't explain the feeling I get when I am around you. The reason I am telling you this is because my heart is very weak. I mayy die within the next few years so I want you to know this. I'm sorry you're probably crying right now... If I could hug you I would. Remember this Storm... Whether dead,or alive...I will always be there for you. I will make you happy when your sad and I will bring joy to your life. I really hope this gets to you before it's too late. Storm I love you more then the world. Please for me...Stay strong...

I close the letter and let the tears fall on the floor. Illumi Nite woke to me crying. I looked at her and wiped my eyes.
"Come on Illumi Nite... Let's take a walk..." I said. She sighed a sad sigh and walked over to me. I placed her on my back and walked towards Fluttershy's cottage. As I continue to walk I began to have memories of Fluttershy. I began to tear up. It hurt so much to know she was gone. About halfway to the cottage Illumi Nite looked around and smiled a bit.
"Mommy's cottage..." She said with a sad smile. I gave a smile back as we approached the cottage. I sighed. It looked dead now that Shy was gone. I opened the door to the cottage and Illumi Nite's smile turned to a frown. I looked ahead of me and saw something wrapped up.
"What the?" I approached the package and began to unwrap it. The wind was knocked from my lungs. Illumi Nite began to tear up as she traced her little hoof across the glass. Fluttershy's element was there in front of me. On it there was a note.

Take care of each other Storm, and make sure Dashie behaves... I love you
