"So, we just warn that girl.. er, Rarity, I think they said her name was, and then she'll be okay? Or is it more complicated than that?" Derpy asked as the Doctor inserted the key into the TARDIS door.
"It's more complicated than that" the Doctor answered as he turned the key and opened the door.
"It's always more complicated than that" Derpy sighed as she entered the TARDIS, which on the outside looked like a blue Police Public Call Box from the 1950's. Derpy could never get over the fact that it was bigger on the inside.
"She might not believe us if we tell her we're time travelers. We could prove it to her of course, but then there's panic and calling the government and all that dancing. We need to make sure somebody else saves her." the Doctor was talking as he was pressing buttons and flipping switches on his control panel.
"So what do we do then?" Derpy was confused, which didn't happen often. She was a lot smarter than people generally gave her credit for. She assumed it was because of her eyes. And maybe her nickname, Derpy. Of course, her birth name wasn't much better.
"Well, I have a plan. I don't have time to explain now. Well actually I have all time in the world to explain because I'm in a time machine. But that's boring. I'll do it later." the Doctor flipped one more lever, and then the sound of the TARDIS taking off could be heard. Derpy loved that sound.
"Yeah yeah whatever hush" Derpy smiled and started humming the song she always hummed when the TARDIS was in motion. "Dummm, di dummmmm, hooooeeeeuuuuu...."
The Doctor just sighed and let Derpy finish her song.
"Alright, we're here!" the Doctor flipped a switch to turn the TARDIS off, then he and Derpy walked over to the door and exited.
"So what're we doing?" Derpy asked.
"We're going to sign up to fly in the competition. It's very important that I am a number higher than three. Explain later."
"Wait..." Derpy stopped walking. "Doctor, you don't have wings."
The Doctor stopped walking. "Good point.. hm.. follow me!" He then turned around and ran back to the TARDIS, while Derpy grabbed his hand and attempted to keep up.
The Doctor unlocked his blue box and walked inside. He went over to the control panel and hit a button. In one corner, something that looked like a three-ear set of headphones fell from the ceiling, attached to a ton of wires.
Derpy had never seen it before. "What's that?" She asked.
"It's called a Chameleon Arch. It can rewrite my biology. It's how I gave myself a 'Cutie Mark' in order to fit in with your race when I came here. It completely rewrites my biology- as I said- and if I set it correctly it can give me temporary wings. I hope, anyway. I've never actually done it." He then hit a few buttons on his console and then walked over to the device, and put it on his head.
"But, Doctor.. isn't that gonna hurt?" Derpy looked concerned. She looked right into the Doctor's eyes, which was not easy for her to do with her condition.
The Doctor smiled. "Oh yeah, it's gonna hurt."
The Doctor flipped a switch on the side of the headset and immediately began screaming. The feeling was similar to wearing the headpiece of an electric chair.
"AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH-UGHHH!!" The Doctor closed his eyes, which had begun to tear up, and pounded the wall with his fist. Derpy stood watching helplessly, knowing there wasn't really anything she could do. She began to wonder why she couldn't have just flown instead of the Doctor, but Derpy knew that questioning the Doctor was usually pointless.
Suddenly Derpy could smell something like burned flesh. She turned to see the back of the Doctor's suit, which he probably should have taken off, begin to bulge out. A few seconds later, a pair of wings tore through the fabric and spread out. The wings were a brown/chestnut color, slightly lighter than his hair color. The machine stopped, and the Doctor fell to his knees.
"Well..." He said between breaths, "That.. that was fun." He stood up, removed the headpiece, and pressed a tiny button on it that caused it to retract into the ceiling.
"Doctor, are you.. okay?" Derpy was worried.
"I'm.. fine.. that hurt a bit though. In case you couldn't tell... but check these babies out!" He flapped his wings twice.
"Wow.. well, er.. okay. What do we do now?"
"Now", the Doctor smiled, "I could use a hot dog or two. I'm starving. Oh, and I could probably use a new suit too."
"I'm so excited! Are you excited, Doctor?" Ditzy Doo, or Derpy, as she liked to be called, exclaimed over the roar of the crowd to the Doctor, who was sitting next to her.
"Yes, Derpy, I love the Best Young Fliers' Competition. Maybe after this I can take you to the one they'll be holding in 3500?" The Doctor smiled, knowing Derpy loved having the benefits of full use of a working time machine, the TARDIS.
"Shh, shh, they're about to start!" Derpy stopped talking and started watching.
"And now, First up.." The announcer began talking, but Derpy wasn't listening. She was in awe over the great fliers that she knew she was about to see perform.
The first flier was very good, as the crowd had obviously expected her to be.
"And now, second, we have a Pegasus from Cloudsdale, Rainbow Dash!"
"Hey, I think I know her!" Derpy whispered to the Doctor. "I heard she's going to perform a Sonic Rainboom- Pretty awesome if you ask me!"
The Doctor simply smiled and watched as Rainbow Dash flew around, performing tricks and eventually, performing the world's second Sonic Rainboom in history.
The crowd, of course, went completely insane. It took ten minutes to calm everyone down enough to let the third flier perform.
About forty-five minutes had passed, and nearly everyone had gone.
"And now, last but not least, our final flier in this year's competition, Rarity!" The announcer exclaimed as the crowd came to life.
Rarity's wings looked almost like butterfly wings, and she was wearing a ton of makeup. The crowd watched as she flew gracefully upwards.
"Look upon me Equestria, for I. Am. Rarity!"
The crowd cheered loudly for her. Then, something happened-
Her wings started to shimmer. Within seconds, they evaporated completely and she began to fall.
"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!" Rarity could be heard screaming by the entire crowd.
Rainbow Dash raced over to catch Rarity... but it was too late.
Rarity had hit the ground, snapping her neck and caving in her skull. Rainbow Dash rushed over, but it was too late. Her friend was dead.
Rainbow Dash sat next to her and cried. The crowd was in shock, and distant sirens could be heard.
Everyone was scared, and nearly everyone was crying... an exception to that being the Doctor, who was just sitting there, watching.
"Doctor... a girl is dead down there! Don't you even care?!" Derpy's eyes were watering.
"Derpy.. when I arrived on this location the TARDIS did not give me any sort of warning. Which means this date is not of any significance. Which means her death isn't locked in time. Which means..."
"...we can still save her!" Derpy finished.
"Exactly!" The Doctor stood up and grabbed Derpy's hand, and began walking to the basement where he had parked the TARDIS. "Come along, Doo, Allons-y!"
