The First One Out of the Nest
The sun rose slowly as dawn approached over a sleeping Ponyville, creating a vast array of pinks, reds, and violets across the morning sky, leaving those who saw in a state of pure awe. The morning was like a dream, one cannot truly describe the beauty they were witnessing, lest they were viewing it at that moment, basking in the glory of Celestia's newborn light. The trees busily wafted in the silent breeze as the day began.
A bird chirped happily as she flitted through the sky, gathering food for her newborn young. The wind blew around her beautiful blue feathers as she flew towards her nest in elegent flight.
Scootaloo prepared herself for what she had planned for today. She strapped on her roller blades, her knee pads, and her helmet. She was ready to go. She could just feel that today was the day it would happen - today was the day that Scootaloo was going to fly. She could just feel it.
But she felt that way every day, at first."I can do this." She said to herself.
Scootaloo peered down the hill and her expreeeion grew wrought with concern. What if she couldn't do it? What if she failed like she does every morning? She fought her hardest to get negativity out of her mind, but it was futile.
"I'm just a... a chicken." Scootaloo pulled off her helmet. She looked down to the ground in a feling of utter disgrace.
The fear of failure was a constant companion to Scootaloo. She thought she could never be as brave a pony as Rainbow Dash, or anypony for that matter!
Tears started to fall down Scootaloo's cheek. "There's no way I can do this."
Scootaloo stared at the morning sun as she would every morning. Always the same thing. She began to sob. "I can't, I-I just can't." This always happened to her, reducing herself to tears virtually every morning, failing to do what comes naturally to all other pegasi. But something kept pulling her to try.
It really was beautiful, the sky. The colors always calmed Scootaloo as a foal, but the sky's changing colors had lost the mystical feel they held for Scootaloo when she was young, the vibrant hews becoming like mocking voices in her head.
"I'm just a big failure!" Scootaloo began to cry out loudly, tears flowing down her now - puffy eyes. "I - I -"
Scootaloo cut herself off as a blue bird flew gracefully towards her nest in a nearby tree, catching the eyes of the
flightless pegasus, cutting off her train of thought. Overwhelmed by sudden curiosity, she pulled off the rest of her gear and proceeded towards the tree.
The tree was an old oak. Something that really didn't fit in with those around it. It's branches twisted, it's leaves few in number. Bark was peeling from all sides. If a tree like that could speak, it would have a longer tale to tell than Celestia herself. Yet it would be one filled with woe, a story of wasted of potential.
Scootaloo could relate to that.
Scootaloo glanced up at a single bird's nest in the dying tree as she slowly brought her tears to a halt. What she saw was the most beautiful things nature had ever presented to her. The nest was a tapestry of twigs, dirt, and leaves. Yet, it held in it the beautiful grace of primal nature itself.
Scootaloo fell silent as she collapsed from the side of the tree. She gritted her teeth. Celestia, if only she had wings! All she wanted too se were a few little birds, yet there she was, failing to do something so simple.
"Can't I just get this once, please," or anything, really, to brighten up her mood.
Scootaloo stuggled as she once again tried to climb the ancient tree.
"C'mon Scoot, you can do this!" She told herself, overwhelmed by her newly found spirit. At least if she wasn't trying to fly, she still felt like that would never happen.
Finally, Scootaloo managed to grab a high enough branch to comfortably view the nest from above. What she saw was more beautiful than anything else in Equestria. More inspiring than seeing a sonic rainboom. More magical than friendship itself.
She watched in awe as the mother bird fed her chicks, obviously too concerned with the activity too call any attention to the orange pegasus. A feeling of love could be felt as the mother moved around, happily giving her own food to feed her children.
Scootaloo's expression changed to shock as the mother bird pushed her child off the ledge of the nest.
"No! You can't do that! She can't even fly!" Scootaloo fell to the ground as tears once again filled her already-puffy eyes. The pain of falling hadn't "She can't even fly..." Even she was unsure where she was directing her words.
Scootaloo sat in silence for minuites on end. Maybe the world just worked that way. Maybe not everypony should get to fly.
A feeling of utter contempt rose in Scootaloo.
"How dare you do that!" She shouted, fighting off more tears. "How dare you do something so horri-"
Scootaloo's attention left the frightened bird as she saw the little chick flutter by her more elegantly than her mother
could ever dreamed of doing. It was absolutely the most awe-inspiring thing the little pegasus had ever seen.
Surprise flowed through Scootaloo's mind as she saw the sun high in the sky. "How long have I been here?''
Scootaloo looked down at her discarded equipment, the only thing coming to mind was the thought of a little bird flying around her.
"I can do this. I can fly, I just know it."
Scootaloo put on her roller blades as she exerted a deep feeling of complete confidence. She turned to once again peer down the face of the hill, took a very deep sigh, and pushed herself forward.
The mid-day sun smiled warmly down on Scootaloo watched the ground shrink beneath her hooves.
This little bird could finally fly.
