A pair of guards stepped aside, opening the large wooden doors, allowing the princess of the night entrance to the magnificent Canterlot castle throne room.
It was always at its best during this time of day or as Luna would say this time of night. It was a shame there weren’t usually any guests in the castle during twilight. She sighed.
She walked through the room still not fully accustomed to the beauty of the castle illuminated both by sunlight and her own moonlight. Her sister, who was waiting for her on the other end of the room, resting on her throne stood to greet her younger sister.
“Good evening dear sister. I hope you slept well.”
Luna smiled. The way her sister spoke never failed to surprise her. The motherly warmth radiating from her, carried to you by her voice, washing over you and assuring you that everything is all right, even when it seemed like all hope is lost. It was no wonder she was so adored by all of Equestria.
Luna knew now, why nopony loved her all those years ago, even though they defeated Discord together and ruled as equals, she never could reach the charm and warmth that her older sister possessed.
“Of course I did big sister. I could never lose sleep to worries, knowing you are watching over us.”
She truly did admire Celestia and was eager to show it, hoping her sister would take her under her wing, like she did when they were just fillies, when she taught her everything she knew about being a princess.
Celestia smiled. “I’m very glad to hear that Luna. Tell me, did you have any interesting dreams?”
Luna was caught off guard. Unlike her, Celestia never showed much interest for what is going on with a pony while it sleeps. Like the sun she was active, not wanting to rest until completely exhausted.
So why ask her that now? Was something worrying her?
“Nothing unusual. May I ask dear sister, why ask a question, that you have never asked before in all our years of ruling together? Is there something bothering you?”
“I’m just curious my dear Luna. Is it a crime wanting to know more about your darling sister?”
She gave another motherly smile and stood up.
“So, ready to raise your big ol’ moon my little moon butt?”
“Sisteeeer! Don’t call me that! I’m not a child anymore. It wouldn’t hurt to treat me with some respect every once in a while.”
“Oh come now sister, I was only teasing. You know I take you very seriously, but by the looks of it you don’t mind my little nicknames that much.”
“Whatever do you mean?” She asked, her curiosity giving way.
“You should’ve seen yourself blush and you smile like the cute little filly you once were.”
Luna gave her a look, but couldn’t hold it for long due to her sister bursting into laughter, that she quickly joined in.
After their small sisterly fight, they tended to their duties, Celestia lowering the now bright red sun and Luna flying high, seemingly pulling along her silvery sparkling moon.
With her sun asleep, Celestia wished a good night to her sister and left for her bedroom, but stopped halfway across the room.
“Oh sister! Since you were worried about me earlier, it’s only fair to tell you. Truth be told, there have been some changes in the sun. I don’t know what, but I felt them. It put me off a bit, so I’ve been a bit distracted today. You just have to know, that you need not worry about me. I’m sure it’s nothing serious.”
She gave a wink and with that, she walked out into the hall, the guards closing the doors behind her, leaving the princess of the night alone to her work and her thoughts.
Luna tended to her duties, going through paperwork and mail sent to the princesses by Equestrians. It was a tiring job, not the first thing one would like to do after they wake up, but it had to be done.
The princess of the night had very few duties. Her most important, was tending to the needs of the sleeping masses of Equestria, guiding them through their dreams.
She loved that job. Ponies would always be thrilled to know that their dream was visited by a princess and embraced the dream walker with love and admiration.
Fortunately there wasn’t much paperwork today and Luna was already looking forward to spending the night having adventures in the dreams of her beloved subjects.
“I just have to fill this out and… Done!”
Finally finished with her boring task Luna walked to her bed, getting ready to enter a pony’s dreams.
Helping ponies face their fears and overcome their nightmares becomes quite easy when you’ve been doing it for as long as Luna has.
