Spike wandered through Ponyville seemingly lost in thought as the morning sun shun brightly upon the usually quiet town. The various races of ponies went about their day in a cheerful mood as they spoke and laughed to one another, clearly enjoying the weather. The tiny dragon was oblivious to the joy around him as he reached a bridge that ran over a small river that cut through the town.
With a sigh he sat on the edge of the bridge. Resting his chin on his clawed hand as he stared at the river in boredom. Today was his day off to do as he pleased. Twilight was with her friends at 'Sweet Apple Acres'. They had invited him to come but Rarity was out of town on business and he had made plans to complete a new list of things he always wanted to do so he refused. To his dismay his new list lasted no longer then the first and now he was left with nothing to do. He felt too restless to nap so he came here to think.
"Hello!" screamed a unison of voices.
With a scream of fright Spike slipped from the bridge landing in the shallow waters. He looked up to see the heads of three fillies he knew well, laughing joyfully at his expense. Mumbling under his breath he left the river. As he reached the edge of the bridge he was greeted by the still giggling youths.
"What's up Spike?" asked Scootaloo, an orange pegasus with an energetic grin.
"Not much." he replied, annoyed at being laughed at but happy he had someone to talk to.
"Y'ah seem fairly down." said Apple Bloom, the yellow filly with her red mane tied back by a large bow.
"I'm fine," he said with a smile, "just short on things to do, it's my day off."
He kept an upbeat tone though he felt depressed about wasting his day. The three girls look at each other, Spike watched in amusement as they seem to have a silent conversation with the nod and shake of their heads as the only clear response. 'How?' thought Spike in confusion but any further thoughts were silenced as Scootaloo gave a defeated nod earning a cheer from the remaining two.
"Spike, wanna come crusading with us?" asked Apple Bloom.
He stopped walking, looking at the filly he considered her offer. He felt happy that they invited him but he knew what they got up to on their crusades and knew he couldn't keep up nor felt the desire to risk his tail, so to speak.
"Thanks but I think I'm going to take it easy today." he replied with a smile.
"Are you sure?" asked the crestfallen white unicorn named Sweetie Belle, "We're gonna try to get our cutie marks in hoofgliding."
Spike chuckled, it was their third attempt at that one and knew how it would end, 'covered in tree sap and pines' he bet.
"I'm sure."
"Aw." sighed the three girls in unison.
"OK then, see you later." said Scootaloo interrupting Apple Bloom who opened her mouth to argue.
"Bye girls." he said as he left them to their fates.
Later the same day Spike lay on a bale of hay simply enjoying the sun. A loud thump nearby brought him back from his drifting mind. He sat up to see Sweetie Belle face down in the dirt. 'Yep, sap and pines.' he thought as he look closer. He jumped down from his spot and walked towards the filly with a yawn.
"Hi Spike." she groaned as she heard him.
"Hi Belle." replied the young dragon, he looked her over noticing her two left hooves were stuck together and her eyes sealed shut. "Where are the other two?"
"We decided to call it quits for today, we got really messy. I'm gonna go ask Rarity to help me clean up."
"Belle, Rarity is out of town." said the dragon suppressing a laugh.
"What!" she practically screamed.
"It's fine, just go wash up at Applejacks."
There was a long pause before Sweetie Belle replied.
"Spike, I can't see." She whimpered.
A moment of silence passed, "How long?"
"I don't know." her voice cracked in sorrow, "Spike, help."
He found himself unable to laugh, she was his friend and in trouble. Lifting her up he squinted at the sun, six hours passed since they left for their crusade, 'she must have been wandering for hours.' Not surprised she never found help. 'On days like today everpony would be at the park or in the fields.'
"Thanks." she said quietly.
"What are friends for?" he more stated then asked.
He wrapped a craw around the upset unicorn and guided her to the library.
Some time later the two sat half submerged in a bubble bath, a favourite of theirs. Spike sat behind the filly washing the filth from her body as he listened intently to every word she said.
"Then we rolled in the dirt." finished Sweetie with a splash and a giggle.
"Sounds painful." he chuckled as he poured water over her mane, letting the shampoo wash away.
"I can see!" squealed the filly as she turned to hug Spike.
"That's great and all but we're not done." he said happily.
Sweetie Belle turned away again and began to hum as Spike started to wash her once more to make sure she was clean. He too began to hum the same tune. He learned it from her a while back and found himself humming with her whenever she started.
Finally they were done. Without a word they climbed out of the tub as Sweetie Belle pulled the plug with her magic. Levitating a large towel to them they began to dry themselves.
Ten minutes later they were wrapped in another towel big enough to hold both of them as they sat on the couch. Two cups of hot chocolate and a small pile of adventure books sat on the coffee table.
They sat pressed together reading from the same book in silence, only small gestures to show that one finished the page and was waiting for the other to turn to the next.
Time had passed unnoticed by the two youths, the sun already replaced by the moon.
Twilight walked to the library with a worried Rarity by her side.
"My parents called to ask how Sweetie was doing, she told them she was staying with me but I was away." explained the worried sister, "I asked Apple Bloom and Scootaloo but they had not seen her since they separated hours ago."
"Don't worry," replied the lavender unicorn as she opened the library door, "We'll ask Spike if he's seen her..."
Her voice trailed off as the two mares found the filly. She was still wrapped in the same towel as the young dragon. The two were pressed together sleeping peacefully, a book lay discarded on the floor in front of them.
The two mares smiled as they wandered to them. They looked to each other, Twilight nodded as Rarity mouthed a thank you. She gently kissed Sweetie before quietly leaving the library. Twilight kissed Spike before turning off the lights and silently retreated to her bed.
A blush slowly rose to the sleeping youths cheeks as the pressed closer together.
Author's Note
I made this up as I went along. This is just a one shot I did to see what it was like to use a PS3 controller to write.
It has been a while since I wrote anything so it may not be up to scruff. :P
