Cheerilee's Stress
“...and that's how our nation was founded!” Cheerilee finished explaining, her teacher's textbook in one hand, a piece of chalk in the other as wrote the most important parts in broad, easy to read letters. Smiling, the young teacher turned around to face her first-year history class. Apple Bloom, Sweetie Belle, and Scootaloo were whispering to each other, having somehow moved back together after she has separated them five different times that semester. Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon were smirking down at their desks, undoubtedly texting to each each other with their mobiles out of sight. Tootsie Flute was frantically shaking out her hair; behind her was Snips tucking a straw into his rucksack, just the thing to fire spitballs from. Snails, as usual, had zoned out, glazed eyes on the chalkboard but unfocused on anything in particular. The rest were openly bored and surly, their half-lidded eyes demanding justification as to why they had to be there.
Unconsciously, the pink-haired teacher began to grind her teeth behind her false smile.
“Silver Spoon,” she spoke with a deadly forced cheerfulness.
The silver-haired girl looked up with a start, her expression startled and blinking. Diamond looked up too and pretended to be focused.
“Would you mind explaining the reasons behind Equestria's founding?”
Silver's eyes darted about as she struggled to find an answer she had no knowledge of. “Erm...I...”
“Your phone. Now.”
“I wasn't using my phone!” Silver pleaded. “Like, I swear, Miss Cherrilee!”
Her patience at its end, Cheerilee stomped over to Silver's desk and moved it aside, revealing in Silver's petite hands her mobile. Silver gave a defeated squeak and handed it over, looking ready to cry. Cheerilee couldn't find much sympathy for the girl though.
“You're here to learn, not to chat with friends,” Cheerilee admonished as she deposited the phone into her special bag.
Ignoring the grumbling from her class, she took a seat and forced another smile for them. “Now the rest of you are going to pay close attention to the lesson now.”
She slammed her bag on the floor as hard as she could, startling her students. “Right?” she asked in a deadly tone.
At last it was lunch time. Cheerilee sighed, glad to get away from her ungrateful students. Carrying her home-made lunch in a brown paper bag, her heavy special bag slung over her shoulder, she strolled through the crowded halls of Canterlot High toward the faculty room.
“Listen, Derpy;” a painfully familiar voice seethed from around a corner, “I'm going to say this nice and slow so even a retard like you can understand.”
Cheerilee stepped into the corridor with the malfunctioning lights. Ahead of her with back turned was Sunset Shimmer in her trademark leather jacket and orange skirt, cornering that unfortunate wall-eyed girl whose name Cheerilee couldn't place with the yellow hair and grey skin but was called Derpy on account of her flawed eyes. The girl was trembling, backed into a corner with Sunset's arms blocking her paths. Sunset needn't have bothered; the girl was too frightened to make any attempt of escape.
Gritting her teeth, Cheerilee balled her fists and marched up to Sunset. Everything about the entitled rocker diva made her angry, and Cheerilee couldn't wait for the little troublemaker to graduate or be expelled, whichever came first.
“Sunset Shimmer!” Cheerilee barked. “Leave—erm...that girl alone this instant!”
Sunset swung around, her pale blue eyes blazing with scorn and contempt. Cheerilee was almost taken aback by the sense of privilege. Did Sunset even realize she was facing a teacher?
“What seems to be the problem, Miss Cheerilee?” Sunset sneered.
“Don't you dare take that tone with me, young lady!” Cheerilee snapped.
“Look, I'm just explaining to Derpy over here not to take my Flash away from me,” Sunset answered, infuriatingly calm.
“I—I wasn't trying to steal Flash from her, Miss Cheerilee!” the girl stammered, on the verge of tears. “I left my rucksack in gym, and Flash brought it back for me!”
Sunset whirled on her, jabbing a cruel finger into the girl's face. “Shut up or you'll regret it!”
Cheerilee snatched Sunset by the arm and yanked her away. “Detention! Now!” Cheerilee ordered.
Sunset pulled away and flicked her thick yellow and red hair wordlessly, walking off with her head held high. She didn't look like she had just been punished at all. They would have to find a more severe consequence for someone like that.
“I'm sorry about that,” Cheerilee muttered to the cringing girl, too scared to leave the small corridor. “Please have a good lunch.”
The bell rang and Cheerilee trudged to the library, hoping that things would be uneventful there. Her hopes were cruelly dashed when she opened the door though. A screeching fluffy white cat chased a small white rabbit while a crimson bird cawed as it flew around the ceiling. Fluttershy ran around, waving her arms impotently and imploring her pets to come back to her.
Her left eye twitching, Cheerilee began to open her special bag. “Fluttershy,” she asked in a calm, sweet tone, “what did I tell you about bringing pets to school?”
“I'm so sorry, Miss Cheerilee!” the yellow-skinned girl responded, reaching for her bird while balanced on a chair. “They were so lonely, and I couldn't bear to leave them at home, so I—”
Cheerilee drew what was kept inside her special bag, something she expected she would have to use sooner or later: her double-barreled shotgun. “I told you again and again,” she explained, pumping the weapon before a startled Fluttershy, “not to bring animals to school!”
Fluttershy raised her hands in warding, teary eyes wide with mortal terror. Her mouth opened, perhaps to say “Stop!” or “No!”, but she could only make pathetic little whimpers. She let Fluttershy have it in the chest with with both barrels, blasting clear through her delicate hands and sending the young animal enthusiast flying into a bookshelf like a flung rag doll, scattering a flurry of burnt paper. Drops of hot blood speckled Cheerilee's grim face. Fluttershy's animals went wild, screeching and scampering for cover. Cheerilee thought about hunting them down, but decided it wasn't worth the effort.
Kicking the doors open, Cheerilee entered the corridor again, the students frozen in terror at the sight of one of their teachers splattered in blood and wielding a firearm. She gazed back, feeling strangely serene, disconnected with everything. She was going to jail for killing an unruly student, and she was fine with that...
...Until she spotted a surprised Sunset Shimmer in the crowd, not in detention like she was supposed to. The burning rage returned in full force, and she raised her gun. “Clearly, you didn't understand what I meant by detention, young lady!” she growled, and blasted Sunset in the head, tearing her smug face off her skull.
All hell broke loose. Screaming students struggled to escape as Cheerilee raised to fire again. “Weeds!” she yelled, firing into the crowd, an urge to cackle welling up in her chest. “You're all a bunch of weeds! Die! Die!”
With a strangled cry Cheerilee awoke, gasping for breath. Flicking the light on, she gazed at her hands, expecting to see blood on them, but no, her hands were clean and soft.
With a sob she buried her face in her hands, the mad laughter of her dream self ringing in her ears. For the third time she dreamed of massacring students. That was it. She needed help. No one deserved to die like that, not even a bully like Sunset. She was supposed to help her students learn and become better people, but was she a good person herself if she fantasized of savage murder? How could someone with such a sick mind be a teacher? Maybe it was time to retire, perhaps even have herself committed for treatment.
First thing today I'll speak with Principal Celestia, she promised herself.
“And you were laughing as you were shooting?”
Cheerilee nodded tearfully, too ashamed to meet her superior's eyes. “Yes; awful as it sounds, I was laughing.”
Principal Celestia sighed, running her long fingers down her gorgeous face. As always, her office was filled with natural light, her long hair gleaming with a mysterious incandescence. Tall, slender, and statuesque, Celestia was truly stunning to behold. Her younger sister, Vice-Principal Luna, was beautiful too, but there was a grace and wisdom to Celestia that made her irresistible. Cheerilee felt unworthy to be in her presence. In fact, she really wanted to curl up and hide away forever, she felt so despicable.
After an uncomfortable silence, Celestia finally asked, “So what would you like to do, Cheerilee?”
Cheerilee stared at Celestia's desk, tapping her fingers against her kneecaps. “I'm unfit to be a teacher,” she told her. “I'm a horrible person who needs to be kept from students, and it might be a good idea to submit myself for psychological help.”
Celestia stood up, planting her hands on the desk. She was wearing her usual purple suit with a tan blazer, a sun brooch pinned to the right lapel. “Cheerilee, you're one of the best teachers we've ever had at Equestria High,” she stated. “We'd be losing an irreplaceable member of our family if you left.”
Cheerilee was astonished. “But-but I'm a danger to everyone here!”
Striding from behind her desk, Celestia approached Cheerilee, hands on her rounded hips. “The way I see it is that you're under a lot of stress,” the principal said. “You were used to smaller classes where you were able to give more time to individual students. The sudden increase of students has been hard on you, hasn't it?”
“Yes,” Cheerilee admitted.
“I know it's hard, but you have to get used to the change. With the right caring and attention you can get through to these kids.”
“But I can't do that under these conditions!” Cheerilee yelled, louder than she intended. Trying to lower her voice, she continued. “I feel like I'm going to snap any moment now!”
Unfazed, Celestia knelt beside the young instructor. “So what if we worked on removing that stress first?” she asked. “If you were more relaxed and less uptight then do you think it would be easier?”
Cheerilee looked up, her eyes puffy from her crying. “I...well, I suppose that could work, but I can't even think of how I'd relax.”
Celestia flashed a smile. “So let me think of how,” she said. “When I feel a need to relax I like to go out for drinks downtown, visit some clubs, dance the night away.”
She gave a wink at Cheerilee. “So what do you say? Care to join me for a night of fun?”
Astonished, Cheerilee tried to think of something to say. “I...sure?”
“Great! Dress in something casual,” Celestia instructed. “I'll pick you up at eight.”
Cheerilee glanced at her watch. 19:59. Tapping her foot nervously, she stood outside her neat little yard, dressed in a white blouse and a magenta skirt with flower patterns. Not terribly different from her usual attire but that was rather casual to begin with.
Dancing. Clubs. Cheerilee had no idea Celestia was into that sort of thing. There had always been something of an inscrutable air about Celestia and her younger sister. With Luna it was rather foreboding, but with Celestia it was...playful? Yes, a sort of playful, gentle slyness, like she knew everything going on and you had nothing to worry about. There wasn't anything arrogant about it either; it's just how she was.
She almost didn't notice the sleek white car pull up beside her, she was so lost in thought. The hum of the window got her to look up, and Cheerilee found herself faced with Celestia's smiling visage. “Hello there, Cheerilee. Ready to go?” the principal asked.
“Yes, absolutely!” Cheerilee answered, nodding. She took a seat beside her boss and Celestia sped off toward downtown.
Cheerilee glanced at her boss. Celestia wasn't wearing her simple suit and blazer combo this time. She had gone for a cream-colored figure-hugging strapless dress with a plunging neckline, a short but thick segmented gold necklace encircling her throat. The necklace drew Cheerilee's eyes down to Celestia's chest, leaving her astonished at how ample it was. Celestia's ivory-white breasts seems ready to burst from her outfit, unblemished and unapologetic, wobbling slightly as the car moved. Cheerilee fell silent and looked down at herself. Her breasts were far from small, having a round perkiness that made her the envy of some of the other staff, but next to Celestia she might as well have been one of those skinny, gawky students with self-esteem problems.
But I do have self-esteem problems, she reminded herself.
“Where are we going again?” she asked.
“Poe.”
“Poe?”
“It started out as 'Place on Earth',” Celestia explained. “Now it's just 'Poe'. A lovely place, not leaning too much in any direction or genre. Rotates the kind of music it plays. Overall a pleasant place for a drink and a dance.”
Cheerilee nodded. “If you say so.”
Cheerilee had only seen clubs on television and in films, so she was surprised how Poe didn't have a burly tattooed bouncer with a list of guests nor a huge line of jaded youths winding around the block to get in. The place was boxy and black with lots of pink and green neon lighting giving a strangely retro-futuristic look. The front had no door, just a wide opening giving anyone outside a good look into Poe. Everything was clean and sharp, a relief to Cheerilee who had feared it might be a dim, grungy place. It was a fairly nice neighborhood though, so it wasn't too surprising.
With Celestia leading, they entered the building, Celestia sliding a card to a man at a front counter. The man smiled and scanned the card before handing it back.
A throbbing beat pulsed through Poe, the music heavy and electronic, the interior lit up with colorful neon tubes and spinning lasers. Cheerilee spotted a glass booth occupied by a white-skinned, blue-haired young lady with huge sunglasses bopping her head to the tune, one she knew was a student at Canterlot High. Vinyl Scratch was it? Cheerilee wondered if her parents knew she was at Poe.
“She's so talented,” Celestia observed. “Vinyl's been such an asset to Poe.”
“Students come here?” Cheerilee asked. She felt weird that students might be present to see their teacher and principal in such a place.
“Students have a right to unwind too,” Celestia said. “Don't worry, they can't get alcohol without proper I.D.”
“That's a relief,” Cheerilee muttered.
Celestia motioned to a cushioned metal stool at the drink counter, a green surface illuminated by an inner light. Cheerilee took a seat next to her as a curvy woman with mulberry skin and flurry cerise hair wearing a purple dress and a white apron with an imprint of a cluster of grapes and a strawberry approached.
“Hey there Celestia,” she said, her voice friendly. “What can I get you and your friend?” She looked to Cheerilee. “Haven't seen you here before.”
“Hello Berryshine,” Celestia answered with a polite smile. “A margarita for me.”
“I'll have what she's having,” Cheerilee answered.
Berryshine raised an eyebrow as she mixed the drinks and handed them out. “Always with the margaritas with you. You simply must try my wine with strawberries next time!”
“Definitely,” said Celestia, sipping from her straw. “That's a promise.”
Cheerilee took the small sea-green plastic cup and took a sip, sighing at the refreshing taste. “Ah...”
“So tell me more about your problems,” said Celestia, stirring her drink with her straw.
Forlorn, Cheerilee peered into her drink. “What's there to tell? I dream of killing students. I don't want to of course, but some part of me wishes the worst of them would just die and leave me in peace!”
Her eye twitched slightly as the details returned to her, her hands clenching into fists. Many of them were quite common to her life, and she had wished so many times that she had more severe punishments to mete out. “It's horrible, but I hate so many of them! I just want to...lash out! Hurt them!”
A gentle hand fell upon her shoulder, turning her to face Celestia. The principal had an understanding smile on her beautiful face, and Cheerilee's rage melted away.
“Cheerilee,” Celestia began, “every teacher has the same dream.”
Stunned, Cheerilee searched for something to say. “But...but...that's just...!”
“You aren't the only teacher with problem students,” Celestia continued. “There's always at least one student that has that effect. I certainly had to deal with my share of problem students before becoming principal. You have to accept it as a downside of teaching. Now your level of stress sounds a little higher than usual, so let's work out a way for you to relax.”
Cheerilee pinched her eyes closed, beginning to feel embarrassed for making such a big deal out of it, but even more so she was grateful it wasn't just her. She let out a held breath before looking up to say sorry for overreacting, but her words stopped in her throat. With the neon light reflecting off her, in particular her shimmering hair, Celestia looked almost ethereal. “Unexpected as things turned out, I enjoyed our little trip,” Celestia told her.
“Me too.” Cheerilee smiled, and stepped out. “Me too.”
“Good night, Cheerilee,” Celestia told her, “and this time I hope you have pleasant dreams.”
“I think I will now.” Cheerilee broke into a broad grin, knowing that Celestia the solar goddess would be visiting her in her dreams for quite some time.
Author's Note
This story began very shortly after Equestria Girls first came out, the general idea in my mind perhaps a day after I saw it. After writing from the dream sequence to Cheerilee's office meeting with Celestia though, I set the story aside in favor of other works. Some things changed quite a bit since it began; I never considered Celestia assuming an anthro form during sex, or even that the sex would happen at Poe. In earlier drafts Cheerilee's dream was far less violent, but I no longer remember how it was supposed to end.
I dedicate this story to all teachers who ever dreamed of killing their least favorite students, including my mother, who just retired from teaching and whose advice lead to Cheerilee with a shotgun in the first place, and she will greatly miss one Friendship is Magic-loving student of hers.
