The sound of the faraway crowd screaming in admiration hung in the air as Soarin ran her flight routine. The fans screamed as he and his teammates flew, performing their high speed aerobics.
This is what Soarin lived for. These shows, the cheering fans, the rush of adrenaline as he performed his death-defying stunts. He smiled at a mare in the crowd, who swooned at the very notion of what he did. The Wonderbolts were the fastest and best fliers around, nopony could argue that. The crowd roared for an encore as they landed, and the team was more than happy to oblige. As the flying team lined up for the final trick of the evening, Soarin smiled, ever fiber of his being filled with the happiness he so desperately longed for.
This is life...
The locker room was the only place for miles in which the Wonderbolts could find solace among their fans. Right outside of it, in fact, there were hundreds of them screaming for autographs.
And nopony in the Wonderbolts liked to dissapoint. A sea of cheer rippled through the large crowd of ponies as the Wonderbolts showed themselves again to the public. Soarin came out first, followed by Spitfire and her brother Rapidfire. They began to sign autographs, and after a few minutes Mistyfly walked out too and began to mingle. Soarin could barely hear a word of the pony in front of him, so he just flashed a friendly smile and a nod whenever she stopped talking.
"Oh, so you admit that you and your team are a bunch of fakes?"
The accusation rang out through the now silent roo.. Soarin glanced back at the pony, a red stallion with a scroll as a cutie mark, and gave him a shocked look.
"Excuse me, sir?" Soarin said, hoping he had misheard.
"Were you even paying attention to me, you idiot?" The stallion questioned coldly.
"No, you were a bit on the quiet side. But now that I've found your voice, how about you ask me that again?" A defensive snarl was slowly forming around the edges of his lips.
"I said 'is it true that you and your team are fakes ,that Celestia altered you to make better fliers so she could have a crack team?'" It was obvious that this pony was not intimidated by Soarin. The smug expression on the stallion's face was evidence enough of that.
"That's a load of horse shit buddy." Soarin said, making his anger and threatening demeanor apparent. "Now I think you've overstayed your welcome here, I would advise that you leave..." He got within inches of the stallion's face. "...now."
"Hey, hey... No need to get violent!" The stallion said, suddenly apprehensive about everything he said, and obviously scared of the consequences of what had just transpired. He slowly shuffled through the crowd, his face turning redder as he noticed all of the evil glares directed at him. Soarin watched as he stumbled out into the night.
Spitfire was the first one to break the awkward tension in the atrium. "All right, guys, that's enough autographs for today." The fans dispersed unwillingly, obviously dissapointed at not getting a turn to meet Equestria's best flyers. "Come on, 'Bolts. let's go home and get some rest."
Soarin slammed his hoof against a locker.
"Soarin, calm d..."
"I will not calm down," Soarin snapped at Spitfire,
"Soarin, it's okay!" Spitfire said, a bit more apprehensive of her words. "We all get people who think that, it's not like that little thought process is anything new."
"Well I'm sick and tired of ponies always bringing it up. We've already said no, what more can they ask for?"
"They just want to get you riled up for a publicity stunt." Spitfire said, sitting down on one of the locker room's benches. "And from the way you're acting, it's working."
"Come on, boss!" Soarin said, a bit peeved at Spitfire's condescending nature. "Doesn't it ruffle your feathers when somepony calls you a fake to your face and then doesn't even have the decency to stay around for the aftermath?"
"Yes Soarin, but I don't try and get in their face!" Spitfire said scoldingly. "I've learned to deal with it, as should you."
"Yeah, yeah, I know!" he said, feeling backed into a corner. "it just really hacks me off. I don't like being called fake and I want them all to know that."
Against her will a small smile spread across Spitfires face. "Well I doubt he'll be crossing you again; I think your breath almost killed him,"
"Oh, ha ha. Very funny..." he responded, turning around to see a familiar snickering Wonderbolt. "Oh come on, Misty."
"Well she's not wrong, you know."
Soarin shot her a look, and she closed her mouth ,muffled giggles still coming from behind it.
"I thought you were supposed to be on my side."
"Not always; sometimes I like to team up with Spits and Rapid against you. It's fun that way."
"I'll show you fun," Soarin said, leaping at Misty and tackling her to the ground. Loud gales of laughter erupted from the two as Soarin and Misty wrestled on the floor; it was juvenile, but neither of them especially cared.
"All right you two lovebirds, break it up." Said the most authoritative figure in the room. "I won't have any PDA's in the locker room while I'm still captain."
Soarin shot up and mock saluted.
"Yes ma'am, Captain Buzzkill ma'am."
Spitfire didn't need to say anything, really. The look she gave Soarin shut him right up.
"It was only a joke, ma'am."
"Yeah well I'm not in a funny kind of mood. Now drop and give me 20."
Soarin dropped to the ground. "But Spitfire..." he said, looking up at her innocently.
"What?" she asked, in mock annoyance.
"My wallet's still at HQ."
Soarin ran around the locker room to avoid all the objects being hurled at him by his captain.
"Too bad you didn't bring it with you," she said, laughing like a giddy little schoolpony. "I could've used it."
After a little while, the three were forced to head back to the Wonderbolts HQ.
These were the days Soarin lived for.
