Legends tell of legendary warriors. Whose powers and skill were the stuff of legends. They flew over all of Equestria, searching for foes to fight and ponies to save. They were Thunder and Lightning.
Thunder was calm, cool, collected, and had the power to generate blasts of sound that could destroy mountains. His brother, Lightning, was hot-headed, impulsive, stubborn, and could generate blasts of electricity that could boil oceans. They were benevolent and humble, using their powers to fight injustice and help ponies in need.
What were these beings? How did they come to be here? The answer to that is simple my friends. They don't exist yet.
Let me explain. This is the story of two young pegasi, who's importance was more then even they know. Do you wish to hear more? Then listen well, for I will not repeat myself....
The morning sun broke into the windows of a cloud house, not unlike the houses in Cloudsdale, and all was still. Except when the alarm went off in a young pegasi's room. The pegasi in question got out from under his covers and shut off the alarm, a sleepy smile on his face. He was Thunder.
He was an average looking stallion, wings held proudly before him. His coat was as black as a starless night, which contrasted heavily with his mane, which was a deep shade of electric blue, as was his tail. His eyes were of a somewhat lighter shade of blue then his mane and tail, but the feature he was most proud of was his cutie mark. It was a grey thunder head, looking about to burst with rain. Thunder yawned and got out of bed, ready to face the day.
A similar alarm was ringing in another room. The occupant of the bed was still for a moment, as if trying to sleep through it. The battle was decided when the pegasi got out of bed, picked the alarm up, went over to a window, and threw the infernal thing out of said window. This was Lightning.
His coat was white, the shade of snow. This contrasted heavily with his mane and tail, which was a bright gold in hue. His eyes were a lighter shade of yellow, but, as with Thunder, his proudest feature was his cutie mark, which was a jagged lightning bolt going across his flank.
Lightning groaned and went to the door, opening it into the hallway and was greeted by the face of his brother.
"Morning, Lightning." Thunder said with a smile.
"Morning Thunder." Lightning replied.
The two looked at each other for a minute, then looked down the hallway to see each one's objective; the bathroom. Lightning looked at Thunder.
"You going to use the bathroom?"
"Yeah. You?"
"I was, but I want you to go first."
"Really?"
"Yes. But first, could you look at my foreleg? It seems to have a spot on it." Lightning held out his hoof for Thunder's inspection
Thunder looked at the leg with suspicion. "There's nothing wrong with it."
"Are you sure?" Lightning pressed his leg closer.
"Lightning, there's nothing wrong with-"
Before Thunder could finish his sentence, Lightning whacked his brother with his leg as hard as he could. As Thunder held his face in pain, Lightning sped down the hallway, laughing all the while.
"You fell for the oldest trick in the book!" Lightning cried, only to get a nasty surprise. Thunder had caught up to the white pegasus and was right beside him.
"I,m going first!" Thunder yelled, bumping his brother towards the wall.
"Not today!" Lightning responded, bumping Thunder back.
They proceeded to race down the hall, (It was an unusually long hallway.) bumping each other as they neared their destination. Lightning suddenly smiled and unfurled his wings. Then, as electricity sparked from his mane and tail, Lightning speed down the hallway, passing his brother by a long shot. Thunder growled. He wasn't going to win that easily. Thunder unfurled his own wings and crouched. As blue sparks came off his mane and tail, Thunder kicked out his back legs, causing a massive sonic boom to come forth and propel Thunder like a rocket.
Lightning speed onward, sure of his victory, when he heard the sonic boom. He turned just in time to have Thunder crash into him, then they crashed into the wall adjacent to the bathroom. Once they recovered from the crash, they made a move toward the bathroom, which resulted in them having a vicious wrestling match, which lasted all, but twenty minutes. Then, with a final push forward, Lightning opened the bathroom door and turned toward Thunder, who was on the floor.
"I win again." Lightning said with a grin of triumph before slamming the door in Thunder's face. Thunder growled and slammed his hoof into the ground, causing a crack to appear in the floor from his unintentional small sonic boom.
"Some day." He said, before going down to use the downstairs bathroom.
As Thunder exited the bathroom, Thunder heard a knock at the door. He went through the house and answered, surprised to find a Unicorn messenger pony.
"Can I help you?" Thunder asked in confusion.
"Message for Thunder and Lightning." The messenger replied, dropping a note into Thunder's hoof before turning and leaving without a word.
Lightning walked in as Thunder opened the letter. "Whose it from?"
"Not sure." Was all the answer Thunder gave before he read the note. Thunder then looked back at his brother in shock.
"This is a summons from Princess Celestia!"
Lightning didn't say anything, just passed out on the floor in shock.
A few minutes later, Thunder and Lightning were flying away from their house, a mix of excitement and Dread filling both their hearts.
"Thunder, do you think...?"
"It's possible."
This could possibly be the chance of a lifetime.
Thunder and Lightning flew along the skies toward Canterlot, speaking excitedly to each other. Well, Lightning was talking and Thunder was listening.
"So, what do you think we,ve been summoned for? Fighting off Timber wolves? Slaying Dragons? Defending the castle from...?"
"Owls?" Thunder finally broke in.
Lightning gave a yelp and looked around in fright. When he saw no owls, he gave Thunder, who was stifling a snort, a glare of pure anger.
"Thunder, you know I don't....particularly like owls."
"Of course you don't" Thunder said, and was surprised to hear that Lightning said it almost exactly at the same time. Only, the white pegasus said it with a mocking tone in his voice.
"That's not funny"
"That's not funny"
"Oh, that's real mature."
"Oh that's real mature."
Thunder gave Lightning, who was smiling like an idiot, a deadpan look. Then he made a "Hoo" noise. Lightning just about jumped out of of his fur at that, While thunder chuckled at his brothers reaction.
"Yeah, well, anyway." Lightning said, clearing his throat. "What do you think we,ve been summoned for?"
Thunder thought for a moment, (Thunder actually thought about his answers) Then said. "I,m not sure. Something important, I,m sure."
We'll, were about to find out. There's Canterlot now." Lightning replied, pointing out the city in question.
Soon, they were walking inside the palace, down the hallway towards Princess Celestia's throne room. Thunder looked around the hallway at the various arts and objects on display in complete awe, while Lightning wasn't impressed in the slightest.
"I know that you want to look at the "Arts" and do all the girly things that Canterlot folk do, but we have buisness to attend to." Lightning said with an affirmative nod.
"Says the one who's making muscles of himself in the mirror." Thunder retorted. The white pegasus, who was just then flexing one of his forelegs, put it down in embarrassment. He was about to make his own retort when they came upon the door which led to Princess Celestia's Throne room. Thunder began to smooth down his hair to in a last effort to make himself look presentable.
"Now Lightning, you need to be on your-" He didn't get to finish his statement as Lightning opened the door and walked inside. Thunder groaned and followed him.
They were not prepared to see the sight in front of them. The Princess of the sun herself, Celestia looked like she did in the stories and posters the brothers had often seen of her. Flowing mane the color of the entire spectrum. White coat the same shade as Lightning's. Sun-like Cutie Mark. The brothers had never seen the princess before and the sight of her caused them to pause in awe. They were finally stopped by a poke from behind.
"Something wrong with your legs, boys?"
They turned to see a steel-grey Pegasus stallion dressed in the golden armor of the royal guards. His feathers were a strange silver color, however, and his eyes were a dull green. Thunder suddenly realized what the guard was saying and bowed to the Princess, while Lightning was looking ready to attack the guard before Celestia broke in.
"It's quite alright, lieutenant Razor Wing. You may leave."
Razor Wing, with a patronizing smile directed at Lightning, bowed and left the Throne Room, shutting the door behind him. Celestia turned her attention to the brothers.
"Thunder Boom and Lightning Flash," She began, shocking the brothers with her knowledge of their full names. "As you may have guessed, this is no idle visit. I have heard some rumors about your exploits in Ponyville."
Thunder, who had risen from his bow, looked a little embarrassed. If The princess had heard about their exploits, then she was probably going to banish them from Equestria right here, right now. Lightning was feeling the bliss of the ignorant, still not having an idea what Celestia was getting at.
"It is because of these rumors," Celestia continued, "That I have an important assignment that requires your skills."
Thunder looked at her in confusion. Had he heard right? Lightning, on the other hoof, actually flew up to eye level with the Princess and said with enthusiasm. "Just name it and will do it, Princess."
Thunder face-hoofed his face in embarrassment at Lightning's boldness, but Celestia didn't seem offended. Quite the contrary, she even seemed amused by Lightning's enthusiasm.
"Very well, your assignment is to find and watch over my number one student, Twilight Sparkle, as she inspects the preparations for the Summer Sun Celebration in Ponyville."
Lightning stared at her for a minute, then dropped to the ground in disappointment. "I was thinking more like fighting monsters and saving princess, not babysitting some egghead from Canterlot."
Thunder walked up to the princess before Lightning could do any more damage. "Don't listen to him, Princess. We would be honored to do this task."
Celestia nodded. "Thank you. Now be of. Twilight is heading to Ponyville as we speak."
Thunder nodded and walked out of the Throne room, a muttering Lightning behind him. As they went to the edge of the palace to take off, Lightning made his objections known.
"Why are we stuck with a babysitting job!? We deserve so much more then that!"
"Lightning, just be grateful that we've been selected for a job from Princess Celestia in the first place."
"I know, I was just....Expecting more."
"Don't worry about it. We'll get our chance soon enough."
The brothers took to the air, heading straight for Ponyville. As they flew forward, Thunder felt the need to add;
"Besides, what's the worst that could happen?"
If only he knew.
