Chapter 7: Derpy: Learning the basics of loss, and shooting!

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

Continuing from Derpy's last known moment.

The portal still lingered in front of the palace, but Derpy didn't try to do anything with the portal, but stare at it with great curiosity. She eventually tried going through the portal with curiosity driving her a little mad. She came in looking the way she came in from. The sky was red, most of the buildings were destroyed, and in the distance, Derpy could hear explosions.

On the other side stood Wanderer, but different... he didn't wear his jacket and he was sobbing on the stairs, "I blew it! This happened all because I made that stupid mistake!" He noticed Derpy as soon as she came through the portal fully, "What? Somepony actually walked through that portal? Who are you?"

Derpy looked at him in surprise, "Don't you remember me? I ran when you tried to fight off those two humans." She explained what happened in detail.

Wanderer cocked an eyebrow, "You aren't making sense, fellow stranger, unless... oh now I know what happened!" He looked behind her expectantly, but there was nothing behind her, "Ah, drat. Get comfortable ma'am. You're not going back to your dimension for a little while."

Derpy shot a glance of fear toward him, "Wh-What do you mean, I'm not going back for a while?" Oh no! I forgot I left Dinky behind when I was being chased! She asked after Wanderer's long pause, "Is there a way back quickly? I really need to get back to my child!"

Wanderer looked shocked, "You have a kid? Man... I'll explain, this is the dimension in which I made terrible mistakes, and you aren't supposed to be here. You must have spent a lot of time with me in the dimension, so you need to go back to where we were when you were separated from me. Do you get what I'm saying?"

Derpy looked around and replied, "I understand, but I stumbled here accidentally..."

"WHAT!? YOU DON'T REMEMBER!?" Wanderer suddenly snapped, "Sorry... you seriously don't remember?"

"No, why is that such a bad thing?" Derpy asked with curiosity glazing her eyes.

"Because if you don't remember the way back, then you'll never find the portal back to your dimension."

This sounded serious, even if this Wanderer could be a fake copy trying to lead her astray. "Do you think you could lead me to the residential district, I think that's where I lost you."

Wanderer put on an awkward smile, "Yeah, about that area..." He looked away, "You'll have a hard time getting past the humans. They pretty much have the area under control."

Derpy snapped, "I need to get back to my dimension though! How do I sneak past them?"

Wanderer jumped onto the nearest building, "Follow me! I might know a way there!"
Above the residential district.

The street was full of humans and weaponry, it looked as if a war could be fought in this one street. Derpy had been staring down at the street trying to think of what route she could take, and then...

"Hmm... I know! Wanderer, you carry me like a backpack and get me to that portal!" Derpy said sounding like she realized the answer to the hardest puzzle ever (Speaking of which, have you figured out the one from last chapter?).

Wanderer seemed to comply, but reluctantly so. "What if this doesn't work?" He asked as if it could fail immediately.

"It won't, now go!" Derpy held onto Wanderer's back while he ran across as much rooftops as he could, then he dropped down into an alley nearest to the portal. He snuck his way past a market stand and made halfway to his goal before someone called his attention...

"Hey, you! The boss doesn't want to be disturbed!"

Wanderer turned towards the man and replied, "I know, that's why I'm moving quietly! You blew my stealth! Now shut up!"

"Wait..." The man yelled to his comrades as soon as he realized what was going on, "IT'S WANDERER! GET 'IM!"

Wanderer suddenly burst into a sprint for the portal, but it was blocked by the reinforcements, "Come on then! I will fail, but for a noble cause!" He threw down an ace of hearts and was teleported with Derpy to the portal, "Time for you to leave! I can't come with, so go!"

Derpy grabbed a crossbow from a weaponry stand and reluctantly shot one of the humans, "I won't leave until you're safe!"

Wanderer smiled sheepishly, "Aw..." He suddenly ran towards Derpy and kicked her into the portal, "You're not dying in my dimension! Now find my alternate persona!" As Derpy flew through the portal, she could see Wanderer fighting for his life, but eventually an archer gets an arrow into his knee, then a heavy human grabbed a claymore and swung for Wanderer's neck, Derpy covered her eyes by the fatality (I was alive, but then I first took an arrow to the knee, then a claymore to the neck).
Cantorlot residential district.

Derpy fell down onto the hard concrete. Neither Wanderer nor Dinky were there, and Derpy began to cry, Why did he have to die? It's all my fault! No one in particular came up to ask what was wrong with her.

Except one... "What's up sugarcube? Why are you crying all alone?" Applejack had just come into the street as Derpy was crying.

"I-I... Someone died because of me... a friend is who knows where... and... and..." Derpy explained through the tears.

It got through to Applejack, "Who's your friend? Ah'm pretty sure ah saw some refugees on the horizon."

Derpy answered as clearly as she could muster, "His name is Wanderer..." Applejack walked off toward the police station, "Wait... Applejack..."

Applejack stopped and turned around, then asked, "What is it sugarcube?"

"Could you teach me how to defend my friend for when he gets back here?" Derpy asked politely.

"I got some papers to file, so technically you're saving my life here." Applejack sheepishly smiled, "Yeah, let's get to that target range! It'll be nice to be away from so many papers!" Applejack represents the element of honesty, so she basically has to monitor guard duty day-to-day by commission of Twilight Sparkle, Seems odd how a ranch girl like Applejack would be the guard leader... and that's Derpy's thoughts about this.
Target range!

"Alright sugarcube! Keep your feet steady before shooting!" Applejack cheered Derpy on as she approached the targeting area. She fired off a bolt, but missed, "Honey, make sure you stare down the target before you shoot!"

"Okay!" Derpy said as the battle saddle reloaded the crossbow. Derpy tried concentrating on the target and fired, but missed again... why? Her eyes weren't looking directly at the target.

"Derpy! You need to narrow your eyes at the target, both of them!" Wanderer had entered without anyone noticing, "Miss Applejack, are you having any problems teaching her?"

"I can do this..." Derpy said as she strained to un-cross her eyes, she got it and aimed with new found sight, then fired. The target made a sound reacting to the bolt, it sounded like a victory fanfare. She only realized then that the bolt had hit the head of the target. The great achievement here was that the bolt was stuck in the middle of the head.

"Nice shot! A true marksman with un-crossed eyes if I do say so myself!" Wanderer cheered.

"Nice job, mom!" Dinky cried out.

"It was a shot that deserves a medal!" Katherine super-praised.

"That was amazing sugarcube!" Applejack praised, "It was even better than our lead sniper!"

If my eyes weren't always like this, then I could do that? Derpy thought surprised after hearing everyone praise her. "Thank you all!" Derpy exclaimed to everyone.
In front of the staircase that used to have a portal.

"And that's what happened to you?" Wanderer clarified after being filled in.

"Sounds like a bunch of horse apples... Wanderer was with me the whole time." Dinky replied to her story.

"Now, now... I believe her... even if the nearest someone should call me crazy." Wanderer admitted, "I'm already a little crazy from our adventure, but... I think it's finally time to find our Doctor!"

No white room on this chapter perspective, but if you go on the other one there might be...
Save derps all around!

Derpy says: "Derp!" She crosses her eyes, and smiles.

AND

Wanderer says: "Derp!" He attempts to cross his eyes like Derpy, but only embarrasses himself.
