Flare Tumble
Load Full StoryA light blue pegasus looked at her wings, those wings couldn't carry her very far, but they were wonderfully dexterous, perfect for the uses that the pegasus actually used her for. The pegasus was sitting on a low-hanging cloud, laughing as her best friend, a silver unicorn filly looked at her angrily from the ground, trying to get her to come down, “Flare, please come down; I wanna show you something!”
“Never, Fae!” she yelled back, taking a page out of her friends book. The little unicorn's green and tan mane was standing on end, and she looked more excited than ever. Though however frazzled she looked at the moment, Faerie Wind was one of the smartest fillies that anypony would ever meet.
“Fine,” she said deviously, “I'll just show you from there.” Upon saying that she crouched and closed her eyes her pink magic flickered for a few seconds before it turned all the way on. The air pressure around the two ponies was gradually rising, and Flare Tumble, being a pegasus, felt it. Cautiously she leaned off the edge. She was staring at her friend so intently that she didn't feel the grip of Fae's magic slowly grip the cloud she was laying on.
“Woah!” Flare yelped as the cloud started spinning faster and faster. “Woah!” she shouted again, “Please stop!”
“But I warned you!” Fae called up to her friend, shouting above the wind, and struggling to contain her magic. Though it wasn't noticeable by the means of the dizzy filly on the cloud, her friend wasn't just making the cloud spin, that was just a side effect, the cloud itself was changing color turning into a dark gray storm cloud.
Suddenly the blue filly who, until now, had been gripping onto the cloud, was flung off. Fae immediately dropped her control of the cloud and stood, fearing for her friend she grabbed her in a field of pink. Fae was sweating and it was obvious that her magic stores had been greatly depleted, but she refused to let go of her friend until she looked steady, got into a gliding position, and nodded. It appeared that she threw her friend in order to give her enough momentum, but Flare still struggled to reach the ground safely. When she did it was a little ways away, but she was quickly joined by Fae who hauled the cloud over behind her.
“I'm so sorry Flare! Are you okay?” she asked worriedly.
Flare was still a bit dizzy, but managed to nod and talk, “Yeah I'm fine, just... warn me next time.”
Fae shook her head and replied, “I'm sorry, I didn't think that it would spin that much. It didn't last time,” Then, a little brighter, she continued, “But look!” She shoved the cloud into her friends face, who gaped at the sight.
Flare may not have known much about magic, but she knew enough from her friends ramblings to know that weather spells her advanced, and very taxing. No wonder her best friend was tired, sweating, and... well tired.
“H- How did you do that?” She stumbled through her words.
Fae smiled widely, “I have no idea!” she replied giggling, “Actually I do,” she continued more thoughtful, “My mom says I have a very sensitive horn, so I sort of just felt it when the weather pegasi made it rain last week. I haven't been able to actually try until yesterday though, but I succeeded!” Fae smiled even wider as she finished.
Soon the two just sat together in the only field that Maretropolis offered as a playground for young fillies and colts. All they did was sit there and talk for a while until the two of them ran out of ideas. Then they just laid down where they were, and started to make pictures out of the many clouds that were in the sky that day.
This activity held no interest for Flare Tumble, who could only imagine what was going to happen in two months time. After being silent for a while Fae's voice broke into her thoughts.
“So what is it?” She asked.
“Wha- What is what?” Flare asked sheepishly. Turning to her friend Fae rolled her eyes, then stared at her, questioningly, but still annoyed.
“I've been your friend for three years, Flare, I'm pretty sure that I know your habits and patterns: You tap your wings on the ground when your distracted and curl them when your in deep thought. You were just doing both at the same time.” Sitting up Fae laid her tail over her hooves like a cat. That's your weird habit Flare thought.
“Fine, in exactly two months I'm going to be in the 1st Annual Video Game Competition.” Fae's smile lasted for a long time, and she was silent. Her eyes turned glossy. Now, Flare's family was in upper class, so she could afford the luxury of video games, but that wasn't why Fae was about to burst into tears, she wasn't jealous. In exactly two months Fae would be moving to Canterlot in order to try to join Princess Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns. That meant she wouldn't be able to be there for her best friend.
In three seconds Fae burst. She threw herself on the grass and started bawling. She cried to her friend, she said she was so sorry that she couldn't be there to support her. Flare, who was no good in these types of situations, couldn't figure out what to do. In the end she just sat there, eventually putting her wing around her friend as it continued to become colder. When Fae finally gathered enough of herself she just got up and stared into her friend's brown eyes. The two fillies sat there in silence for a while until Flare's parents came to get them. The two of them were spending the night in Flare's house. During that time they were able to get the time when they had to say good bye out of there minds. They had a good time, it would have been great if not for Flare's two annoying little Earth Pony sisters.
…
2 Months Later
…
“Good luck Flare, do well, win,” a steady stream of good wishes flew from the unicorn's mouth. It made sense though, as Fae wouldn't be able to be there for her friend, Flare.
“I'll do fine,” the blue pegasus replied. “It's me who should be wishing you good luck,” Fae was going to a tryout, and Flare could tell it was nerve racking. When the two friends heard the trail pull it's whistle they shared one last glance and goodbye Fae rushed onto the platform to meet her parents.
Flare waved at her friend until she disappeared into the distance. Then, using her wings to propel her, she raced to the cloud her parents we waiting for her in. Using three pairs of wings, even if one was uneven, was still very fast. The moment they got there Flare's mom pulled a jar of cream out of her saddlebags and started to spread it over her child's wing. The cream hardened her feathers, making it easier to press the buttons. They got there in just the nick of time. Flare's mom quickly tossed her a modified controller so that it was easier to use. Catching it in her mouth Flare rushed inside.
When the game was about to start Flare was in her position, which was laying down with her forelegs holding the controller, and her wings poised above it, ready to move at her command. Flare looked at the competition. There were two unicorns, one pink and the other... a darker pink, Flare guessed they were sisters. There were also three Earth Ponies and one other pegasi. The Earth Ponies were green, purple, and teal. While the pegasus had a tan coat.
…
Flare was losing on the final round. It was against the lighter pink unicorn. The one pony who was harder than all the bosses was pink. In a few seconds she was going to lose. She was going to have not kept the promise she made to her best friend. Their words raced through her mind Good luck Flare, do well, win. Then a voice she would know anywhere called out;
“Use a potion Flare!” Said a certain silver unicorn with a green and tan mane. Quickly she followed the advice of her best friend and used the button that Flare always forgot about, trying not to question how she got there. Since Flare didn't ever use potions she had quite the stockpile of them. Using the potions whenever necessary Flare started using tricks of her own. The unicorn tried to get her opponents health down, but she couldn't succeed. She was able to hold up for five more minutes until Flare dealt the killing blow and won the game. In two seconds flat after the game was over she was tackled by Fae.
“Thank you so much!” she shouted, “How did you get here!”
“Forget about me! Look at your flank!” Fae sqealed in reply. Knowing the only thing that could appear on her flank after winning a game like this. When she spied her brand new Cutie Mark she squealed with her friend. A lime green power icon had appeared on her side and when Flare's mom came in she was so proud. Then the bearer of the trophey walked in. Levitating a bracelet before him he shouted Flare's name out for all to hear, then slid the prize on her hoof.
