Chapters It was a cloud covered afternoon as the sun filled the day with its light; a thick blanket of fog covered the forest in its cold mist. A cloaked figure galloped through the trees, panting as if there was no air left in his lungs.
He could hear them overhead, flapping their wings. The accursed sound rang in his ears as the thoughts of death clung to his mind. As the sounds drew near, he could run no more. He took refuge in some thick undergrowth.
The sound of the winged beasts stopped abruptly. He could hear their hooves snapping twigs, rustling brush, and snarls of anger, yet could not see any of them. The sounds slowly faded and a feeling of relief eased his tense mind.
The cloaked pony slowly stepped anxiously out from the brush. He heard a faint grunt from behind him and turned. Out from the forest came a hurtling spear which thrusted into his shoulder, pinning him to a nearby tree. Emerging through the fog, a number of pegasi slowly moved to him. His eyes widened with shock and fear.
A large brutish pegasus appeared in front of the pack dressed in captains battle gear. The pegasus drew his great sword and without hesitation swung at the now helpless pony. The sound of bark and bone snapping rang out at the swords powerful force.
Blood spilled along the forest floor as the unfortunate pony’s head rolled off his lifeless body. The pegasus pulled the spear from the limp corpse as it fell loose.
The captain looked to the spearpony and laughed in approval. “Look in that bag, sergeant,” he said, as he returned the spear to its owner.
The sergeant jumped to it. “Yes sir,” he said, quickly opening the satchel. The forest was silent, as if all eyes watched him rummage through the bag.
The sergeant gave a slight chuckle of satisfaction and looked to the large pegasus. “Sir, all I found were some trinkets and these.” The sergeant held out two letters with the seal of Goldhoof upon them.
The captain grinned. “These are messages to the other outposts we took earlier, those pathetic excuses for front line defences. Now it’s time we take their last outpost,” he said in a gruff voice, putting the letters in his bag.
The sergeant looked to his captain in displeasure. “Sir, the men are tired, and those camps were much smaller than our scouts report this one is.”
The captain glared at him. “Warriors do not rest! We’ve pushed this far; by the emperor I will destroy these filthy creatures with every last sword and shield I have! And if you have a problem with that I'll cut you down myself for insubordination! Do you understand me, sergeant?”
The sergeant snarled. “Yes, sir,” he relented, as he prepared for flight. The sound of wings bellowed through the forest and soon silence clung to the trees.

A medium fortification perched on a rocky cliff side overlooking a vast valley of barren wilderness. The watchpost was silent, as the cold winds of the storm nearby barely reached their position.
The ponies stood in their respective towers as the storm drew closer. Exhausted, and with bitter winds now blowing upon their faces, they stood like stones. The walls were cold and grey, made of steel and iron, almost too fitting for this bleak setting on this misty morning.
A young lieutenant with a medium build and a matching black coat and mane sat in his quarters awaiting important information. An officer walked into the room and saluted the lieutenant. “Lieutenant Carvon, we haven't received word from any of the other watch posts. It’s been over an hour and I’m starting to think something has happened to the messenger we sent out,” the officer said, with a worried look upon his face.
The lieutenant looked up at the officer as if he had anticipated this news. “Then we will send out a recovery team. Hurry, we must move quickly,” he said, standing up from his chair and trotting out of his quarters.
The officer looked to the lieutenant. “Sir, you’ve been in your quarters all day, is something troubling you?” he asked, as they moved to the barracks.
The lieutenant looked over to him. “I believe they are coming for us; the signs are all too clear,” he said, as they proceeded into the barracks. A little while passed, and soon the ponies were outfitted and ready to move.
The lieutenant looked towards the officer. “Search not, but call for assistance; our messenger has been gone for far too long,” he whispered, leaving the officer with a puzzled look.
Lieutenant Carvon looked at him dead in the eyes. No words were spoken as silence dropped amongst them. The officer opened his mouth, but no words came out as they slowly trotted out into the winter haze.
The winds began to pick up as the officer and his team left the fortification. The clouds became a light grey and rain snailed its way over their watchpost. The lieutenant looked to the sky as droplets of water ran down his face. The sound of water clinked against his armor as it fell.
Carvon stood in front of the barracks wondering if anything was worth the fight anymore. He closed his eyes, tired from the long nights, cold harsh winds, and the seemingly restless enemy whose eyes were always upon them.
His mind began to fade into a place he had once cherished long before the dark times of the world. He remembered when he was a young colt working with his father, the cool weather of spring and luscious grasses to rest upon. His mother grooming him and his father so joyful to see his son. The world had taken his light, the world had taken his love.
He could never understand why they hated the other races so much, why they destroyed his perfect world. He had always wondered if they even could love or if they had ever loved at all. His thoughts were cut clean from the sound of a horrific chant which thundered through the sky.
He opened his eyes as a dark unnatural mass formed high above them in the clouds. His eyes widened as he shouted to his warriors. “Everyone, bolters, now!” The sound of metal smashing into metal tearing open their fortifications.
Spears rained down from the heavens as the soldiers scrambled about the camp. The unfortunate ponies who didn't make it to an overhang were punctured like pin cushions. Blood curdling screams now filled the watchpost.
The spears stopped falling and littered the camp with dead and wounded troops. Carvon dashed for one of the bolters made of earth pony ingenuity and unicorn magic, on the fortress wall and jumped in. As he looked up to the sky he could see hundreds of pegasi warriors descend from the rain clouds.
He pulled the trigger and hundreds of bolts darted towards the diving warriors. The sharp bolts cut through the air, ripping through the wings of the attackers and tearing them open. Their lifeless bodies dropped like flies. Carvon grew numb to his own fear as blind rage took over.
The winged beasts were soon upon the fortress walls as their iron boots slammed down. Carvon jumped out of his bolter and unsheathed his sword. The pegasus in front of him looked him dead in the eyes and drew his weapon. Their eyes narrowed, glaring to one another only to focus on their adversaries, snouts crunching under their helms in rage, and teeth grounded for the coming clash.
Steel to steel, blades rang and muscles tensed as Carvon swiped his blade at his enemy. The pegasus drew back and stumbled on a fallen soldier, dropping his blade. Carvon lifted his sword and struck the fallen soldier deep in the gut.
Blood spewed across Carvon’s hooves and face as the pegasus squirmed in his bloody mess. Carvon retracted his sword and looked to the court yard only to find that they were outnumbered. The sound of iron hooves thumped behind him and he turned.
A pegasus with his blade drawn charged him. Carvon lifted his sword and they began to fight on the wall. The pegasus looked bloodthirsty and filled with hate, swinging wildly and recklessly. Carvon saw his opportunity and cut his opponent clean across the neck.
Carvon saw a young soldier fighting off three pegasi along the wall and rushed to his aid. Sword at point, he ripped straight through one of the pegasus’ back, tearing through his heart. He pulled his sword out from the dead pegasus as one of the others turned to face him.
Carvon ducked as the soldier flailed his sword over his head, just barely grazing his mane. He recovered from his crouch and arose to a kick in the snout, pushing him over the fortress wall down into the courtyard. He smashed into a cart, landing on the cold wet dirt, pain instantly filling his body. He could see the young soldier fighting on the wall, thrusting his blade into one of the pegasi, as the other rushed to its aid.
He could hear muffled screams and swords clanging together. He looked across the ground for his sword, but could not see his. The closest one was under a fallen pegasus. Carvon crawled towards the weapon as pain jolted through his bones. He lifted the pegasus off the weapon and as the body rolled over Carvon caught a glimpse of its face.
The seemingly soulless eyes gazed deeply, his face scarred and blood washed coat. Carvon felt an uneasy presence and staggered to his hooves. He had seen something more than just an empty shell of a soldier. He saw a look of sadness in the soldier's eyes, a look of failure. Something he had seen in his parent’s eyes long ago. He had never seen this from them, nor had he ever bothered to look.
The thought was cut short when an officer ran to his aid. “Lieutenant! We need to fall back into the inner fortress! What are your orders?” he shouted with most trepidation.
Carvon looked to him and gave him a quick nod. ”Hurry, give the signal; we must get inside!” The officer took out his horn and gave the call. The sound bellowed through the fortress as many of his warriors fled to the inner gate. They made a charge for the entrance.
As they neared it they could see in the thick of the fight of his soldiers holding the gate to the fortress. One of the soldiers at the gate shouted out. “Look, it’s the lieutenant, help him now!” They rallied to him as fast as they could, pushing through the wall of pegasi with all of their might.
Carvon and the officer stopped in their tracks as two pegasi turned from the gate and charged them. The officer pulled a spear from the ground and hurled it towards one of the charging pegasi. The spear jammed through the soldier’s helm, tearing through his eye, clear through to the back of his skull. His corpse crashed into the mud with the heavy sound of metal and armor plates shifting to an abrupt stop.
Carvon dodged the sword of his enemy, shouldering him into the blackened mud. The officer yelled to him. “Hurry, they’ve created a gap, we must go now!” he said, pushing Carvon through the mass of casualties, cutting down any obstacles in their path.
Eventually, Carvon stood at the gate behind his fellow warriors. He could see the mass of carcasses in the courtyard, which seemed to have no end. A splinter of fear nipped him like a pin. “Fall back into the gate!” he shouted with distress.
The soldiers began to pull back as they filtered through the gate. Spears and arrows peppered the iron and wood wedges as they began to close the heavily fortified doors. Carvon looked upon the gates of iron, wood, and steel, but he knew that the gates would not hold them back forever. The pegasi bloodlust would soon break their bindings.
He looked to his fellow soldiers, their faces rinsed in mud, scarred with terror. Despite this, they were still filled with blind pride, strength, and prowess. All were willing to die for their cause, for their families, and for the greater good. The sounds of the hellish choir of pegasi chanting around the keep that was to be their grave permeated through the outer walls and into their ears.
Carvon looked into his warriors eyes, the fathers, sons, and grandsons he had come to know, as he struggled to gather the words to speak. He took a deep and long breath and exhaled, looking to them. “Though we have lost this fortress, this battle will have meant nothing if we all fall. Take it upon yourselves to live, for your families and loved ones, for this is not your last fight. This is not your time to fall.” He moved a large chest across the floor revealing an iron hatch.
The officer grimaced him. “Sir, what honor is their in leaving, for if we leave, honor will not follow,” he said, looking Carvon in the eyes with discontent.
“Then I will leave you with your wish,” Carvon said, pulling his badge off and hoofing it to the officer.
The officer’s eyes glazed over with held back tears, but could say no more. “Sir?” the officer questioned in disbelief.
Carvon looked to his soldiers once more with gratitude. “My last orders to my brothers: take them and there will be honor,” Carvon said, as the officer put the medal in his pouch and saluted him.
The officer’s face, cold and drained, faded down into the dark and hollow gap with the rest of his soldiers. Their hooves echoed in the darkness, finally fading along with all of their sorrow. There Carvon stood alone. With the loud bashing of the door and chants of devils at his doorstep, he could only wait.
He shut the iron hatch and pushed the large chest over it. A heavy feeling pressed his hooves to the floor. He stood staring at the door as it began to give way. He could see the pegasi on the other side bashing the door in. The thoughts of his mother and father ran through his head over and over as his eyes narrowed at the sight of his enemies.
Out of anger he shouted to them. “Come to me! Show your worth!” The gate was being broken apart rapidly now.
Carvon galloped to his bunk, picking up his shield and spear, and went to stand near the entrance. He could see them now, much more clearly than before through the holes in the gate. Their bodies were muddy and soaked in rainwater, their faces darkened with rage and hostility. Carvon took up his spear and jabbed it through one of the large holes.
He could feel the point drive into his enemy’s flesh. He pushed his hoof on the door, pulling the spear out of his enemy’s body. Just as he had done that, the angered pegasi pulled back from the ravaged gate. Carvon backed up as well, not sure what was going to happen.
The chanting stopped and so did their attempt to break in. The wind and rain were the only sounds he could hear, but then he heard it. A large heavy thud outside the gate. He could hear a large suit of armor clinking towards the door. The snarling snorts and heavy boots rattled in Carvon’s mind as the rain fell slowly and the cool wind blew through the gate. The sound grew nearer as he waited with fear caged in the back of his mind.
The sound of the mass stopped at the gate and all Carvon could see was the silhouette of a large bulk in front of the gate. Without any warning the gate burst open with a loud crash. In strutted a massive pegasus dressed in plate mail which was elegantly decorated in higher ranked attire, draped with war medals and honor badges alike. His coat was grey, and armor covered in blood.
His eyes, the same yellow of tree sap, glared at Carvon as he stopped at the gate. The two stood staring one another down. No soldiers filed in, nor did any of them move from their positions at the gate. It was merely seconds that had passed, but it seemed like hours for Carvon.
The metal warrior finally drew his great sword, which had been sheathed the entire time. A menacing grin fell upon his face as he lifted his sword. A loud battle cry filled the room as the large beast charged Carvon. The great sword swung towards Carvon, barely missing as he rolled to the left. Carvon recovered, swinging his sword at the brute.
The pegasi bashed Carvon’s sword from his hoof, causing him to stagger back, still holding on to his shield. The large sword swung again, but Carvon blocked it with his shield. Another blow came down on the shield, breaking Carvon’s fetlock. Dropping his shield, Carvon gave out a yelp and jumped for his sword.
He managed to swipe up his sword, still cringing in pain, and the large pegasi charged towards him. Carvon swung his blade, breaking his opponent’s charge, but missed his swing. The large pegasus stopped and brandished his sword wildly towards Carvon.
In the midst of their combat, the pegasus’ heavy blade cut Carvon’s hind leg, crippling his step, and causing him to fumble backwards. The armored warrior lifted his sword to strike Carvon down. Carvon jumped to his side as the massive blade came down upon him, the colossal force of the attack striking the ground with such might that the blade embedded itself into the ground.
Carvon stood as fast as he could to take advantage of the situation. He swung for the pegasus’ face, the blade cutting right through the metal helm and splitting the pegasus’ eye right down the center and leaving a nasty scar along his face. Blood spewed from the pegasus’ face as he clasped his eye, shouting in pain. Carvon saw that the other pegasi were now flooding the room, shrouding their leader.
Carvon staggered to his shield as blood ran from his foreleg and hind leg. He stood shaking from pain and weariness. The pegasi slowly surrounded him as he cornered himself. Off to the distance a horn gave way. The hope he had been longing for, the salvation he needed. The soldiers in the room looked about and then to Carvon with fear.
One of the pegasi charged Carvon with his spear. Carvon bashed the spear out of the way with his shield and drove his blade into the soldiers neck. Just before he could pull his sword out, he felt a sharp pain dive into his side, breaking his armor. His grip on his sword loosened as he fell back dropping his shield held on his other foreleg.
Carvon fell to the floor cringing in pain. He could feel the blood gushing out on the inside of his armor, leaking from the puncture point. The pegasi looked to the others and then to him. The pegasi pulled the spear out of Carvon’s side and ran for the gate. Carvon was alone and slowly began to lose consciousness.
He could hear muffled voices from the pegasi shouting to one another in the courtyard. “We need to get out of here, we are outnumbered!” a pegasus exclaimed. The room began to grow brighter as a light from the outside illuminated through the gate.
The sounds slowly faded as he became comfortable in his rest; nothing seemed to matter any more. The pain became lesser as he laid there. His father entered through the gate, and lifted Carvon up off the ground with all of his love, “It is not your time my son,” he said lovingly. Then Carvon’s pain was gone and so was his father.
Carvon awoke to a dim room, tucked away in a well knitted blanket. The light from the early morning sun slowly flooded the floor, as it crept in from under the drapes. The bed was so comforting it was as if he were lying on a cloud. Carvon felt rest that he had not felt in days. The pain on his side and in both of his limbs were gone and he could move freely.
He could hear the faint voices of a mare and a stallion talking in the next room. He moved his head back and forth on the pillow to look around, but was too comfortable to get up. The room was very homely; it gave him a feeling of nostalgia.
It was decorated in a warm earth pony fashion. The drapes over the windows glowed a bright red from the sun and the walls were lit a taupe brown. The unmistakable craftsmanship of the furnishings themselves were unforgettable, for he had seen them in his own home as a young colt. Even the bed he lay upon had a comfort those military cots could not compare to.
The aroma in the air was nothing to mistake: carrot, potato, and cabbage stew. There was something all too familiar about this. Tears rolled down his eyes as he jumped from the bed and galloped through the door. There stood his mother stirring the pot, and his father at the table just as he had remembered them. His mother and father both smiled. “Please eat your food, dear. It’s going to get cold,” his mother said with unsettling glee.
Carvon stood at the doorway, aghast. “Mother, Father? This can't be real...” he said to himself in surprise as he galloped to express his love.
Then Carvon looked to his mother and father and felt a strange feeling of emptiness. His parents slowly dissipated and darkness quickly crept around him. The lonely sound of silence clouded his mind as if it were its own being, gouging his spirit with the pain of his past. “Mother, Father… please don't go,” he whispered to himself in sorrow and despair.
Carvon opened his eyes, finding himself lying in a grey, dull and drab room; his beautiful dream had ended. He looked over to his left and saw that a stallion had just walked out of the room wearing a medical uniform. He heard a voice on the other side of him and turned his head.
It was a mare dressed in medical attire as well. She had a wavy light purple mane which flowed down like a spring river, fluffing up on both ends. Her eyes were a lime green, and she had a coat that was a dark purple. “Don't move too fast dear; the potion’s effects are wearing off,” she said as she wiped his forehead clear of sweat.
Then he remembered and jolted forward violently. “My soldiers! Are they okay, and what of the battle, did we lose!?” he shouted, still drowsy from the potion.
The nurse quickly trotted to him and calmed the startled stallion. “You need to lie and rest. If not for your soldiers, you wouldn't be speaking this night,” she said, pushing him back towards the bed.
Carvon relaxed and felt his energy drain rapidly as he fell back towards the bed. She looked to him with displeasure. “You were lucky enough to be saved by your comrades. From what the officer told me, you were in pretty bad shape. They fought off the rest of the invaders fairly easily and then took you straight here,” she said, trotting to her records.
The nurse sat at a table only a few feet from Carvon, writing away on her paper. The doorway which lead out into the other room was dimly illuminated. The only sounds Carvon could hear were hooves echoing down the halls.
Carvon slowly eased back into the bed, feeling exhausted and weak from the potion’s effects. “Was anyone sent back to the forward post?” he said, with a quiver in his voice.
She looked up to him sadly. “The officer said a large number of troops were being sent out there to gather the fallen,” she said with grief.
Carvon’s face didn't change. “I wish I hadn't awaken to this nightmare, but the king needs soldiers, and for me to think that is selfish,” he said, as he turned his head to look out the window into the night sky.
His eyes watered a little and a look of sadness drew upon his face. The nurse moved over to him and slowly turned his head with her hoof. “I’m sorry for your losses. The officer told me of your valiant deed; you should be proud. Not many would have done what you did,” she said softly.
Carvon looked at her with some gratitude. “Thank you for that, but I believe any stallion would have done the same,” he said, modestly.
There was a brief pause as the two thought in silence. “Did you happen to catch the officer’s name?” Carvon asked, turning to look back out the window.
The nurse smiled and nodded in approval. “Yes, of course. He said his name was Kern. Do you know the stallion?” she asked.
Carvon took a breath of relief and looked to the nurse. “Yes, yes I do. He’s fought by my side for many years. Is he here by chance?” he asked.
She looked to him and smiled once more. “Yes, actually, he is waiting for you downstairs,” she said happily.
Carvon looked back to the window and into the night sky. “Good. Please call him up here; I don't want to keep my good friend waiting,” he said.
The nurse walked to the door leading into the hall and turned to Carvon. “I'll be right back, so don't get up, okay?” she said, trotting out the door.
Carvon looked out the window as the trees danced in the shadows to the winds soothing blow. The moon and stars all in attendance as usual rarely missing the show. He lay there and thought to himself, Look at all of those stars, all living in one existence, with little conflict to our own knowledge, peace in its entirety. One day I hope we can achieve unity and exist as they do for the sake of all life on this planet.
It was a short time before the nurse walked back into the room with a bucket of water and ice. She walked to his bed and put the bucket on the floor. “I sent for him; Officer Kern will be up shortly,” she said, pulling a cloth out from the water and ice.
The nurse wrung the cloth of water and ice, draining it into the bucket. She put the cool rag over Carvon’s forehead. “Those healing potions you took enhance the dream state of anyone who takes them, often immersing them into nightmares and terrifying memories. On the other hoof, they work exponentially fast. The side effects are also not as bad as some. How’s your side?” she asked, gently pulling the covers down.
Carvon wasn't surprised to feel that his limbs and side were healed, for he had been on these sorts of potions before. The haunting nightmares of his past never seemed to let him live in peace. He looked up to her. “I feel much better. Wait, I just realized we never introduced ourselves.” he said with concern.
Her brow raised and her mouth opened a bit. “Well isn't that just rude of me; my name is Jenna Plumb, and, well, I kind of know your name already. The officer told me,” she said, looking away shyly.
Carvon clicked his hooves together and kept on looking towards the window. “Its fine. Well it’s nice to have you here Jenna, you've been very comforting. Would you mind telling me where I am, though?” he asked in a low tone.
Jenna turned back to him and put the cloth into the bucket. “You’re in the Daisy Green hospital, second floor, right here in the town of Fair Fence,” she said, wringing the cloth again.
Carvon accidently pushed the sheets off of the bed. “Sorry Nurse Jenna, it’s just a bit hot in this room, though that rag is making things much cooler,” he said, rustling about.
Jenna just grinned a bit. “Well of course you're going to feel a little uncomfortable; we just had you take a healing potion,” she said.
Just as Carvon was going to say something, Officer Kern walked into the room and looked to Carvon with a salute. “Lieutenant Carvon, how are you doing?” Kern asked.
Carvon looked to him with a disapproving look. “Pull the mask off, Kern. You're not in the presence of the lieutenant now, and you know you don't have to salute me,” Carvon said with a smirk.
Kern just laughed. “Of course I don’t you old fool; I'm just making sure you're still all there in the head,” he said.
Jenna looked over to Carvon and gave him an empathetic look. “I guess we'll just have to finish our conversation another time,” she said softly, dropping the rag into the bucket.
Kern looked over to Jenna. “Well that’s just nonsense. No need to stop your chat because I'm here; continue your story or whatever it was you two were talking about,” Kern said, still chuckling.
Jenna fixed her cap and trotted over to the table where she had been writing. “No, it wasn't that important. You boys just catch up with one another and I'll sit over here to finish my work,” she said, pulling out a chair.
Carvon gave her a kind nod and then looked to Kern. “I'm just glad you're here in one piece. If not for you I'd have been dead hours ago,” Carvon said, with a sarcastic look upon his face.
Kern chuckled a bit. “Yeah, but fighting all of those pegasi sure made me hungry. I think you’re getting me some dinner for saving you and taking back the post,” he said with a grin.
Carvon didn't look surprised. “You big hog, you're always hungry, and besides, I already saved your hide more times than you can remember,” Carvon said jokingly.
Kern looked to the ground and then to the ceiling. “Yeah, yeah, I was just... you know, not on the top of my game all of those times,” he said hesitantly.
Carvon rolled his eyes. “Sure Kern, you just keep telling yourself that,” Carvon said, laughing to himself.
Carvon’s expression suddenly changed to a far more serious one. “So when I sent you out for aid, how did you get more help in such a short amount of time?” he asked.
Kern’s face went straight. “Well, we sped off as quickly as we could to the nearest posts, but more than halfway across the lines we ran into a patrol team who were on their daily route. They came with us, and luckily for everyone, we hadn't gone too far from the post. When we came back we could hear them chanting and crowding around the gate. We knew that someone was held up inside,” Kern explained.
“Well I'm glad everything worked out. Was a messenger dispatched to inform the king of this attack?” Carvon asked intently.
Kern looked to him with confidence. “Of course, we made sure to send him out to the nearest outpost as soon as we found the patrol team,” Kern said.
Carvon looked to him with pride. “Well then you did everything you could have. Thanks old friend; this is not just some petty deed to go unseen. You saved my life and for that I am grateful. In all my years of service our friendship is what has held our bonds together, not the steel which binds us,” Carvon said, holding his hoof out to Kern.
Kern shook his hoof. “Brothers until death,” Kern said in a low tone.
Carvon let go. “I need to go to my men. Excuse me, Nurse Jenna, am I able to leave the facility now? I am feeling much better,” Carvon said.
Jenna looked up to him from the table where she was organizing her records. “Well I'll just have to run one quick test on you and then we'll see if you’re good to go,” she said, pulling a cotton swab from a glass container that sat on one of the counters.
She walked over to Carvon and lifted her hoof to his muzzle. Carvon stuck his tongue out and Jenna swiped in once with the swab. She then dipped it in a clear substance which turned the tip blue. “Looks like you're all set, Carvon. The potions effects should have worn off so you shouldn't feel any more discomfort or pain,” she said, smiling at him.
Carvon looked to her from the bed, still a little tired. “Thanks Nurse Jenna for all the help. Hope I can see you again, just not in these circumstances,” Carvon said, creeping out of the bed.
Jenna just smiled. “You can just call me Jenna. I hope to see you again too, but there is no need for thanks, Carvon. You’re already doing us a valiant service. Your stuff is in the chest over there. You don't want to leave without that,” she said with glee.
Carvon smiled to Jenna and then looked to Kern. “Thanks Jenna. Alright, I’ll get ready to go. Then we can go feed that pit of a stomach of yours you big hog,” he said as he went into another room to change.
A good chunk of time passed and Carvon finally came out dressed in his armor, to find Kern sitting at the table talking to Jenna. “Finally!” Kern exclaimed happily.
Carvon laughed a bit. “Alright, but before we go, do you even know where we are going to eat? It’s very late and I'm sure there's no place open at this hour,” Carvon said with concern.
Kern just held a puzzled confused look upon his face. “Jenna, do you know of any places?” Kern asked.
Jenna thought for a second and then answered. “Well theres always the inn which is open 24-7, and then theres the hospital lounge area with its own food, but I wouldn't eat it, since it’s not that great. Your best bet is the inn,” she said.
Kern thought as well and brushed his chin. “Well I guess the inn would work. Besides, the rest of my men are there waiting for me; damn fools may have eaten everything already,” he said with a laugh.
Carvon looked to Jenna then to Kern. “Well I'd like to say thanks again Jenna, and we’ll finally be on our way,” he said with a smile.
Jenna nodded and saw them out of the hospital. The land was covered with tall grasses and shallow murky waters. There were large trees that stood far from one another, but no companions to accompany them. The stars were strewn across the sky in their majesty and reflected onto the waters, creating a sparkling shimmer of mesmerizing lights. The night air held a slight breeze of chilled winds as the land danced to a flowing green sea of vegetation.
Carvon and Kern said their goodbyes to nurse Jenna and trotted out of the hospital into the clear night. As they trotted along Carvon looked back at the hospital. “Now that I can see the hospital in full, its actually quite small for a two story complex,” he said.
Kern kept his eyes ahead as he trotted. “Well we aren't exactly in a major city; Fair Fence is a medium sized farming community. I’m almost surprised they have a hospital,” Kern said.
“Well actually that hospital wasn't there a few years ago. I remember when they established it, but that’s when the war was really bad. Now that the front has pushed forward it’s more for the community,” Carvon said.
“Yeah, but now the problem is that there is no closer hospital to the front line. Daisy Green is the only hospital in between the front and the second line of defence. That distance is country and open ranges, which can be very dangerous for wounded soldiers,” Kern said with grief.
“Well I've heard that there will be a forward base of operations constructed to house wounded and munitions. But who knows when exactly that will happen; the king has his hooves full with other matters,” Carvon said.
“All we can do is hope for the best and wait for this war to keel over,” Kern said with a low tone of voice.
The soldiers trotted down the road for some time as they drew towards the inn. They couldn't really hear much commotion and all was quiet. As Carvon loped closer to the inn he could make out the sign which read, “Picket Inn”. The inn was a tall two story building with a hay roof, the support structures were made of wood and iron. Vines crept up the side, meshing it to the earth.
A large tree rested at the inn’s side, covering it in shadow. A white picket fence surrounded its area, cutting off at the edge of the road with an open gate. There was no one out front, though a lightbox illuminated the area around the gate. The two soldiers walked through the gate and down the short path to the entrance. As they walked into the inn the innkeeper, who was behind the bar, looked to them. “Welcome back Kern, come back for some more greens?” he said with a cheerful voice.
The innkeeper had a grizzled grey beard with a light brown coat. His mane was also grey, which sat like a hedgehog upon his head. His face was washed and weathered from a life of hard times and wonder. He kept his inn tidy and cozy, yet all the tables were empty and not a soul stood at the bar.
“Oh I see you've met Kern. Yeah, no surprise there,” Carvon said, rolling his eyes.
Kern loped to the bar, taking off his helmet. “Hows it going, Marv? Allow me to introduce my oldest friend: Carvon Blackhoof,” he said joyfully.
Carvon looked to Kern with discontent, but not surprise. “Nice to meet you Marv. It is Marv, right?” Carvon asked, taking off his helm.
The barkeep cleared his throat. “My names Marvin, but I don't mind if people call me Marv. Everyone seems to like it anyhow, so why stop them?” Marvin said, hoofing them plates.
“I guess. It suits you, but I prefer to be a little more formal with others,” said Carvon.
“Oh come on Carvon, liven up. People are different outside of the front lines. There’s no need to be formal,” Kern said.
Carvon looked over to Kern. “You know me, Kern. I am the way I am; that’s how it’s always been. By the way, where are all the others?” Carvon asked.
Marvin looked up, now making their sandwiches. “They took to their bunks a while ago, after having a few drinks with that patrol group you guys came in with. Rowdy bunch they were, but there haven’t been good times in here for quite some time now, so it was almost a relief,” he said with a grin.
Carvon looked a little surprised. “They didn't cause any trouble now, did they?” Carvon asked.
“Why of course not, they were just having a bit of fun, that’s all,” Marvin said, hoofing them their sandwhiches.
The sandwiches were triple breaded and held fresh, juicy, thick cut slices of tomato, topped with fresh snipped daisies grown straight out of Marvin’s garden. The lettuce was a nice green, thickly cut, with a good texture to it.
Kern looked at the sandwich in awe. “I'm so hungry I could eat a tree,” he said, biting into the sandwich, crunching and munching away.
A poorly dressed stallion trotted into the inn and glared at them almost immediately. He was small and looked sickly, with his bone structure slightly protruding from his body. The innkeeper looked to Carvon and then to Kern. “Oh, not this guy again...” he whispered.
The poorly dressed stallion curled his hooves in anger and his face scrunched in anguish at the sight of them. His balding head and intense facial expression were far more disturbing than his drunk strut. “You! You brainwashed fools! You fight to die, falling in the hooves of the dead who gratefully take you!” he shouted, veins pulsating on his head and neck.
“Billy you damned fool, get out of here! There's no need to cause any fights,” Marvin said, while making more sandwiches.
“Fights! I’m a pacifist you arrogant fool, how dare you serve their treachery in this establishment!” Billy shouted, flailing his forelegs.
Billy flailed his forelegs around as he blabbed on about the war and how wrong it was, while Carvon sat at the bar, annoyed with him. Kern didn't seem to care as he dug into his sandwich. “This guy’s crazy; does he always come in here?” Carvon asked.
Marvin looked to Carvon exasperation. “Just ignore him; he hasn't caused much trouble before. But then again, not many soldiers come in here, either,” he said, handing Carvon another sandwich on top of the unfinished one.
Kern sat oblivious to the whole situation, eating sandwich after sandwich. Carvon couldn't eat with a mad stallion in the room. Then, the crazy pony drew closer to him. “Damn military drones, all you do is fight for a lost cause, killing innocents and the like!” Billy shouted.
Billy lifted his hoof as he drew closer, and Marvin looked over to Billy. “Damnit Billy, get the hay out of here!” Marvin demanded.
Billy got too close to Kern and Carvon finally spoke. “I wouldn't do that if I were you,” he said, still munching on his food.
Billy looked intently towards Carvon, then to Kern, and then to Marvin. “I'm staying out of this one Carvon, sorry,” Marvin said, as he made another sandwich for Kern.
Carvon looked at the crazed stallion and rolled his eyes. “What are you gonna do about it? What, this big guy gonna hurt little old me? You’re all drones! You wouldn't hurt me; I'm a civilian!” Billy said, laughing intensely.
Carvon just shrugged. “You're just a waste of time, you crazy bastard,” he said, taking a bite out of his sandwich.
Billy bit his lip and frowned, his eyes widening as his veins intensely pulsed on his head. His eyes shot around the room in all directions and grew wild. His ears twitched and his body jolted forward. He lifted his hoof and knocked Kern on the back of his head.
Kern spun around and out of his chair, kicking Billy in the gut. He flew back like a horseshoe, hitting a nearby bar stool. The crazed stallion hit the floor, groaning in pain. He flopped back and forth like a fish, frothing at the mouth. His eyes squinted and his face scrunched together. “My stomach, oh my stomach, I think he… he broke my stomach! I’m gonna... call the guard on you!” he exclaimed, as he drooled on the floor.
Kern sat back on his stool and finished off the rest of his meal as if nothing had happened. Carvon just chuckled and looked to Marvin. “Sorry Marvin, but I warned him,” he said, still eating his second sandwich.
Marvin just laughed and walked over to the now curled up pony. “Ah, he got what was coming to him,” he said, dragging Billy out of the inn.
Kern sat back in his chair and looked to Carvon. “Oh, were those not the best sandwiches you've had in days?” he queried with a heavy breath.
“Yeah, much better than that military slop they call food back in the barracks, and a good show too,” Carvon said, barely finishing his second sandwich.
Kern hoofed his face and shook his head in embarrassment. “I did it again didn't I?” he asked.
“Yup,” Carvon replied.
Marvin walked back behind the bar and just laughed. “Sorry, I can't hold my composure; that was just too funny. You should have seen the look on that guys face when you kicked him,” he said.
Kern didn't look surprised. “Well he must've done something really bad to piss me off that much. All I remember is walking in and eating my food, now I'm talking to you guys,” he said sincerely.
“Well let’s just say he won't be coming around here anymore. You know what, you guys have made me laugh like I haven't in a long time. The meals on me, and your friend Kern here already paid for your room,” Marvin said with a smile.
“Are you insane? My hog of a friend here ate about seven sandwiches! I'm going to have to pay or you’d be getting ripped off,” Carvon said.
“No, no, I insist, please, it’s just a few sandwiches. Besides, it was all worth it,” Marvin replied.
Carvon nodded. “Well alright, thank you Marvin,” he said.
Carvon looked to Kern as he stretched and yawned. He felt a weight over his body, as if his armor was twenty pounds heavier. “You know what, I'm getting tired as well. Lets hit the hay, Kern.”
The light from the moon seemed brighter now, flooding through the open door. Carvon got up out of his seat. “Your rooms is upstairs, second door on the right,” Marvin said, as he cleaned up the bar area.
Carvon nodded and trotted up the stairs. Kern looked up to Carvon. “Hey, I'm glad you’re okay… the gods watch you Carvon, just pray they don't take you,” he said quietly, trotting to his room below the stairs.
Carvon walked into his room, closing the door behind him. He got down next to his bed and raised his hooves. “Luna, goddess of night, let my faith be strong and my passion be stronger,” he whispered.
Carvon took his armor off and peered out the window. It was so peaceful; there was nothing he loved more than the natural scenery the gods had given him. He crawled into bed closed his eyes, and slept.

Carvon sat up at his bedside and yawned. “Thank Celestia's kiss; I’m not dead yet,” he said to himself. He sat there for a few minutes, stretching his limbs and brushing his mane back. He then got out of bed and trotted towards a window, unveiling a breathtaking sight.
The sun was slowly rising over the blue mountain tops, casting its majestic light over the endless marsh. The small pools of water sparkled intensely against the sun’s beaming rays as the clear white clouds floated so quietly in the sky. The flowers bloomed to the light, as a purple wave washed upon the land, flowing together with the wind like a vast sea. It has been quite some time since he had seen something so beautiful. Having been at the front watch post he could only see the bleak and endless valley littered with death.
He then noticed a familiar face: a unicorn with a light orange coat and a mane the color of an orange. He was huddled in a relaxed state of meditation in a luscious green patch of grass. The unicorn in meditation was none other than Officer Zeel, who was part of Carvon’s company, who had been stationed at the front with him. Carvon knew not to disturb him while he was in meditation, for he needed full concentration to fulfill the traditional raising of the sun.
In this early morning tradition given to the unicorns by Celestia, the elder and middle aged unicorns would awake at a similar time of the night bringing forth the sun. It is a natural sense that all unicorns are born with. From a young age this sense is dormant, however once they reach a sufficient age they can clear their thoughts and focus their energy on this ancient ritual. Once the sun is in clear sight, it takes to it’s normal course, moving the day along.
Carvon could hear hooves and chattering stallions past his door. The dinging of forks and plates could be faintly heard. The aroma of fresh bread and eggs filled his room. He stepped back from the windowsill and began to put on his gear. He packed his saddle bag and slung it onto his back while he trotted out the door. As he trotted down the hall towards the stairs he could see three recognizable soldiers sitting at a table. Tellick, a blue coated stallion with a grey mane, was sitting across from Denmark, who was bickering as usual.
Denmark held a careless look upon his face, as if he took no consideration in the words coming from Tellick’s unintellectual babble. Denmark’s white coat was worn and rough, housing burns and a large cut across his face. Though most of the blemishes were concealed by his armor and cloak, some were quite noticeable. His mane was a cyan color and also coarse in its look.
Kern was busy devouring his breakfast as if it was going to run from his ever hungry stomach. Carvon sometimes questioned if he was even conscious when he was eating a meal.
As Carvon trotted closer, he could hear Tellick jabbering on about his outrageous claims. This one was on how to grow carrots in a garden more efficiently. “All ya gotta’ do is grind up some carrots and mix it inta the soil! I’m tellin’ ya’ll it works,” Tellick exclaimed, flailing his forelegs.
Denmark just kept shaking his head. “No Tellick, I’m not sure what kind of hay you’re chewing, but carrots, leeks, potatoes, and every other vegetable grow because of water, daylight, and good soil,” Denmark said, putting one hoof to his face.
Carvon drew closer and was immediately noticed by Tellick, who dropped his conversation with Denmark. “Howdy Lieutenant Carvon,” Tellick said with a salute. In doing so, he tipped his plate over onto the floor; shattering the ceramic piece. Carvon hoofed his face and shook his head in embarrassment, a common gesture when Tellick was around.
Kern, who had several empty plates next to him, hadn’t even realized that Carvon had walked in, and was still plowing his snout into his food. Denmark stood with a salute. “Lieutenant Carvon, it’s good to see you well and able sir,” he said.
Carvon smiled. “At ease soldiers, and it’s good to see you guys in one piece as well,” he replied, pulling up a chair.
Denmark and Tellick returned to their seats at the table. Kern eased back in his chair, holding his stomach, with a newly finished plate in front of him. Kern then looked to Carvon and gave him a slow salute and held a happy look upon his face. “And Kern… On second thought, why am I even surprised…” Carvon said, looking at his large stack of plates in disapproval.
Carvon then scanned his group. “I can't say much to express my gratitude, but thank you all. I wouldn't be here if not for all of my brothers,” Carvon said, looking to them with sincerity.
Denmark looked to Carvon and nodded then took a drink of his apple cider. Tellick, picking up his plate, started to speak. “Well if not for them their patrol ponies, we probably wouldn't have made it back in time. It’s too bad that so many others couldn't be here to celebrate,” he said sadly.
Carvon looked to his group and then back down to the table. “We will hold a proper burial for our friends once we return to the front…” he said somberly.
Kern looked to Carvon and then panned the group. “Let us rejoice in their passing, though it is tragic we must remember that they died in battle. So long as they held love for our gods, death in battle will always bring you great honor. As it says in Divinity’s Bridal, ‘The Mare of light will give honor to all of those who follow her down the path of law and order. To fight for the belief of truth and justice in the name of Celestia. If your heart is true then judgment is abated.’ Couldn’t be any clearer,” Kern said proudly.
Carvon looked up back to the group. “Let us all take this moment to pay our respects,” he said bowing his head once more.
The table was quiet for a while as they sat. The morning sun had finally come to its natural course, as Zeel walked through the door to the inn. Denmark looked up and broke the silence. “The gods have heard enough of our pleas, let’s just enjoy the rest of our day,” he said hastily.
Kern just snorted and then nodded. Tellick looked up and around, then chuckled a bit. “Oh colt, those guys bought tons of firehay to celebrate. Of course I drank about ten shots before I passed out and I somehow ended up in my room on the floor. They sure kept this place alive. Why I remember one of them gettin’ up on top of this table here and dancin’ with some random mare, and might I say she was mighty pertty,” he gibbered.
Carvon smiled a bit and Denmark frowned as he looked at Tellick. “Yeah, I hauled your heavy flank up the stairs and dropped your worthless carcass on the floor,” Denmark said with a grin.
Carvon rolled his eyes as Zeel approached him. “Good morning Carvon, I can see that the side effects of the potion are far past and you’re well on your hooves,” Zeel greeted.
Carvon looked puzzled. “How did you know about the potions, Zeel?” he asked.
Zeel pulled up a chair and sat down. “Due to the substantial wounds inflicted on your side, I could only draw the conclusion that a potion would be required. Stitches and simple field tools would have prolonged the procedure and may have resulted in your death. The potion’s strong regenerative properties and magical chemicals mend the wounded area much faster than anypony could attempt to do with tactile-kinesis,” he said.
Carvon laughed a bit and then smiled. “Is there anything you don't know?” he asked sarcastically.
“Well knowing everything in our short span of life is improbable, though those with an adequate intellectual standard strive to grasp onto every bit of knowledge we can perceive or understand,” he elaborated.
Tellick looked over to Zeel. “Hey Zeel wouldn't grindin’ up carrots and spreadin’em in the soil help carrots grow better?” he asked.
Zeel looked to Tellick and then to Carvon and spoke in a monotone. “I stress adequate intelligence for a reason, yet I would prefer not to insult anyone's intellectual brain function.” He then looked back to Tellick. “Tellick, are your parents not farmers?” he asked.
Tellick lifted his foreleg in a joyous manner. “Well a’course they are, me and ma families been famin’ our whole lives!” he exclaimed.
“Well I would have no expertise in the matters of farming, therefore I could not answer that question with any credibility. I will leave this knowledge up to your own judgment considering your agricultural history,” Zeel said, as he turned to Carvon.
Tellick turned to Denmark and then bit his lip as if he wanted to say something. Denmark glared at Tellick. “Don't you speak, Tellick,” he said in a low tone.
“I told ya it works. See, Zeel said I was right and I know because I'ma farmer! Carrots grow better with carrots!” Tellick shouted.
Zeel sighed and looked to Carvon as Kern laughed. “Damnit Zeel!” Denmark exclaimed.
Zeel smirked as a mare came to him with a few cups of hot coffee on a tray. “Would you like some coffee, dear, or something to eat? You’ve been out there for quite some time,” she said.
“Yes ma’am. I'd like some coffee and sugar on the side please. I usually wouldn’t ask for sweets but the coffee cake I saw this morning looked delicious. I’d like a piece, and that’s all, thank you,” Zeel said.
She then looked to Carvon and smiled. “Okay, and how about you dear?” she asked.
“I’ll have the same thing but with scrambled eggs, and toast as well, thank you,” Carvon stated.
She gave them their coffee, placing it on the table with a little cup of sugar and some silverware rolled in napkins. “You got it hun, I'll have that cake here for you colts in a minute. Your toast and eggs will be a tad bit longer, alright?” she said as she began to trot away.
Tellick turned his head as she trotted away and a smile grew on his face. “Would ya look at that flank, isn't it a great view?” Tellick said.
Kern knocked him on the back of the head as they all chuckled a bit. “Have some respect you halfwit,” Kern said discreetly.
Tellick just rubbed the back of his head and looked down to the table. Denmark laughed again, amused with Tellick’s pain. The mare came back with the cakes and placed them on the table. “Here you go guys, enjoy,” she said with a smile.
The others held to their respective conversations as Zeel and Carvon sat quietly. Carvon put the sugar in his coffee and began to stir it in slowly. He had not sat with his friends in quite some time. As it swirled, he pondered on the simple joys in life which were hindered by the war. There wasn't much he could enjoy from the outside world with the constant need for soldiers.
After countless patrols through the same mundane, bleak paths, and hours spent in cold crowded sleeping quarters, the little things everypony took for granted became more appreciated. He couldn't even remember the last time he drank a good cup of coffee.
As the steam arose, he took a sip of his coffee. He felt the smooth liquid warm his body as the scent filled his senses with a homely feeling. He began to smile, then put his cup down as he saw Zeel taking a bite of the coffee cake. “How is it, Zeel?” Carvon asked.
Zeel patted his muzzle as he looked over to Carvon. “It’s quite enjoyable actually. The coffee gives it an excellent boost in flavor. I'm sure it’s obvious that they were made for one another. Who would have thought?” he said with a smile.
“Alright Zeel, I'll take your word for it,” Carvon said, cutting into the cake with his fork. He lifted the piece of cake and bit into it. It was sweet with a delightfully crunchy texture.
“It is exquisite, yes?” Zeel asked.
Carvon chewed the piece and swallowed. “I like it a lot Zeel; it tastes amazing,” he said.
“You should thank the mare, she baked them herself. In fact, here she comes with your eggs and toast,” Zeel replied.
The mare trotted up with his food and placed it on the table in front of Carvon. “Here you go hun. How'd you like the cake?” she asked with a cheerful smile.
Carvon looked up to her. “I think it’s great, thanks. Whoever made it is a great baker…” Carvon said.
She held her smile. “Oh thank you sweetie, I made them myself. I'm glad you like them,” she said with enthusiasm.
“Well I'll have to take some to go on our travels,” Carvon said.
“Oh splendid, I'll go get you some freshly baked cakes right away,” she said, loping back to the kitchen.
Zeel, just finishing his cake looked up to Carvon and raised his brow. “Well you seem to be acting a bit different, though it is obvious why,” Zeel said.
Carvon rolled his eyes taking a sip from his coffee. “As usual you’ve found me out. Damn you and your analysis of everything. Yes I think she’s… pretty, though there is nothing I could do in terms of dating. With such strict military scheduling and the pegasi war fleet on the rise, love is out of my grasp for now. I must leave her be.” Carvon said, cutting into his eggs.
Zeel just smirked. “Regardless of the current state you’re in, you could have at least asked for her name. However I can understand your point of view; love is complicated, and for us... it doesn't come easily,” he said.
Carvon swallowed his food and sipped some more of the still steaming coffee. “Well, I guess it wouldn't be too much to ask for her name, though I don't see any meaning in it,” Carvon replied.
Kern leaned over to Carvon. “Getting her name doesn’t mean you’re going to be falling in love, it just means you took the time to ask. It could mean something to her and nothing to you, and hey, I can tell she likes you,” he said quietly.
Carvon rolled his eyes. “What makes you say that Kern?” Carvon asked.
“She didn't offer me any extra cake for the road,” Kern said with a pouting look.
“You don't need any extra cake, you hog,” Carvon replied, stone faced.
Zeel and the others laughed a bit as Kern lifted his forelegs. “You’re going to give me some… right?” Kern asked, smiling.
Carvon poked at his eggs and picked out a parcel. “Of course I’ll give you a piece; just one though. I fear you may eat the whole batch if I give in too easily. I’m sure the rest of our friends here would want some as well,” Carvon replied.
Kern nodded and turned back to Tellick and Denmark, who were in their own world of debate. Zeel drank the last bit of his coffee and placed the cup on the table. “Yes, I’d enjoy a piece, though I'm not really one for sweets as you already know. Also, are you going to ask her name?” Zeel asked.
Carvon finished his eggs and sat staring into the black abyss of his coffee mug. The sounds of the tavern drew near to his ear and the morning light grew brighter with each passing minute. Ponies were coming in and out of the inn. Most of them looked like locals coming in for breakfast. Carvon picked up his toast and bit into it. The sweet taste of the warm butter and crunchy texture of the toast filled his mouth.
Carvon placed the piece back on the table and looked to Zeel. “Sure, I don't see why not. I guess just getting her name won't kill me,” he replied.
Zeel leaned in a bit closer to Carvon. “Strange, it took you quite some time to respond; was something troubling you?” Zeel asked in a low tone of voice.
Carvon looked at Zeel then back to the kitchen door where the waitress had gone. “Well… I guess it’s just me being worried is all...” Carvon said.
“Worried about what, Carvon? Are you worried that you will never find love?” Zeel asked.
Carvon picked up his toast. “Its not that, it’s just that I don't want to find that I love her, and have her love me in return, then have it be that in some twisted fate, the war consumes me,” Carvon said, biting into his toast.
“If I told you that you were wrong, then I’d hold to selfish ideals.” Zeel took a deep breath and began to explain. “It is a noble thought to think in such a way... caring for the feelings of that loved one who isn't currently in your life. Yet, those who go to war and have a lover, take the risk of leaving them behind in the event that they fall in combat. Are they selfish? In my opinion, no, they are not. Love is subjective and those who feel it cannot be condemned for it. If they so wish to be in love then let them. Who are we to tell them not to? In the end, love is what holds us together. There will always be a point when love can be no more, and only when we reach the Fields of Harmony can we live in peace with our loved ones.”
Carvon leaned forward and propped his head against his foreleg. “I agree, but running the risk of leaving someone you love, that feeling of failure… It’s not something I want to go through, knowing they will be left alone in this dark world. Eventually my love will get the best of me; I will find it some day,” Carvon replied.
Kern raised an ear and chimed in. “That you will; it is Luna’s bidding that all of her disciples receive love, whether it be in life or death. If love is found in life, a special spark will burn inside one another, even in death. That flame will never die, carrying over into the Fields of Harmony so that you may find one another and never be lost,” he explained.
“I only wish all ponies could hold to those values. I dont want to die without love, but I have faith in Luna. I know she will send it to me eventually,” Carvon said with confidence.
“It’s good you keep strong in your faith Carvon, for when the time comes, you will be rewarded,” Zeel replied.
“Thanks guys, for the support,” Carvon said.
They all sat quietly at the table as the tavern folk spoke amongst one another. Carvon finally finished off his coffee and set the cup on the table.
“I long for that day, to reach the Fields and live in happiness. To see my family once again and fill a space in my heart that cannot be replaced. It’s not my time though; the gods still find use in me and I will do all that I can to appease them,” Carvon said.
Kern nodded. “We will all make it there someday; to live a good life is to stay out of the plane of chaos,” he said.
“The thought of that place irks me; with all of our ill natured brethren on this planet it is hard to say who’s going to the Fields or not. I just hope my life is good enough for the gods,” Carvon said.
“Don’t worry Carvon, just keep to the Bridal and live with good intent,” Zeel said.
The mare came out of the kitchen holding a bag that was most certainly filled with coffee cakes. She trotted towards the table with a smile. Carvon looked to Zeel and then to Kern. Denmark sat quietly as usual, eased back in his chair. Tellick sat in his own world as they all knew he was gawking at her when she drew nearer.
She reached the table, placing the bag upon it. “Here you go hun, freshly baked. I’m not charging you for this; it’s on the house,” she said, winking to Carvon.
Carvon looked up to her and started to speak. “I wi-,” but was rudely interrupted when Tellick jumped the bolter. “I got this! No need for some perddy pony like yerself ta be cookin’ up some mighty fine pastries for free. I’d gladly pay ya for them there cakes,” he said.
Carvon rolled his eyes as Zeel and Kern hoofed their faces. Denmark grinned as Tellick held a sad excuse for a pouting face. She blushed a bit and leaned one hoof on the table, turning her head in a shy manner.
“Aww, thank you sweetie for the compliment. I guess I can't refuse such an offer from a gentlecolt,” she said bashfully.
Tellick snapped to his bag and shuffled his hoof around in it. He withdrew several bits from its holdings and put them on the table in front of her. Everyone else at the table saw it as a good opportunity to pay for their meals as well and put their money on the table.
Carvon looked over to her. “You’ve given us some great service, thank you…” he paused, as if he was expecting her name in response.
It clicked pretty quickly. “Oh my! My name is Vendra, my apologies for that; I usually would give my name. And what's your name, hun?” she asked.
“My names Carvon, these are some of my good friends, part of my detachment in the front. There’s Denmark, Kern, Zeel here and, well, you've already met Tellick,” he said, smiling to her.
Most of them gave her their respective gestures of acknowledgment and then turned to their own confines of thought. Tellick, on the other hand, just rested one hoof on his cheek and gave her a cheerful smile.
“It wasn't hard to tell that you were in the military, though not many soldiers have been through here in quite some time.” she said.
“Well, not too many of us get to come out to these smaller settlements very often. If it’s not a direct trade route to Whitepoint, or a patrol route along the front, other than that we usually don't see much else,” Carvon explained.
Vendra’s eyes lit up. “You’ve been to Whitepoint?!” she asked with glee.
Carvon held a confused but interested look on his face. “Of course I have; I’m sure most ponies who’ve joined the military have been to Whitepoint or Goldhoof for their training. Have you not traveled to Whitepoint?” he asked.
Vendra frowned and faced the ground, raising her eyes to him. “Well I've never really been anywhere out of Fair Fence. I have always wanted to travel to Whitepoint. Ponies have said that it’s the most beautiful city in the world; even the Crystal Empire’s Crystal Palace is second hoof to its majesty,” she said a little more cheerfully.
Carvon’s face held concern. “It is a beautiful city, though the comparison to the Crystal Palace may be a little bit far fetched. Why haven’t you gone?” he asked.
She smiled, then looked back to Carvon.”You’ve been to the Crystal Empire as well? I can’t believe it! You can’t be telling me you haven't seen much now. From Whitepoint to the Crystal Empire, I mean, that is some distance to have traveled,” she exclaimed, taking a moment to breath from excitement.
Vendra leaned closer to Carvon. “I haven't really had any time to travel, nor the funds. Sometimes, though, I feel that I may get home sick If I go away. I love my home. I'm just not sure how the outside world is going to be in comparison,” she said.
Carvon’s dull look began to break and a slight smile drew upon his face. He felt a way he hadn't in a long time: a strange build up of emotions curdled inside. Actual talking with a mare, and a beautiful one at that. Tellick leaned over and looked at the two suspiciously as Zeel turned his eyes to Tellick and eased back in his chair. Tellick began to open his mouth, as if he was going to say something. Just as Zeel saw this he lifted the spoon next to Tellick and clocked him on the muzzle with it.
Tellick sat back in his chair with a frustrated look upon his face. A tear dribbled from his eye as he rubbed his nose, muttering a bunch of jargon. Zeel smiled and began to talk with Kern and Denmark.
“If you're afraid of the world because of judgment, you have every right to be. However, do not let that stop you from finding your path. My father always used to tell me, ‘If fear is your binding then create a key; the only tools you need are in here,’” Carvon said, gesturing to his chest.
Vendra’s eyes motioned upwards in thought. “Hmm, I know what you mean. Though, it’s not as easy when your home has always been so peaceful. The only things I know of the outside world are stories from travelers who come into the inn every now and again. They usually talk of sad and terrible things. I mean, I know I can't judge the world from a few stories of terror, but… I guess… I’m just afraid,” she said, looking back to Carvon.
“Being afraid is one thing, but letting fear run your life is another. We’re all going to pass one day, though for most, it is quite hard to accept these things. In my opinion it just makes fear much more of a word rather than a feeling,” Carvon replied.
Her smile shifted straight, but she held her interest. “I guess you're right; I can’t fear the world... My mother keeps on telling me that I should get out for once and do what I’ve always wanted, and that’s traveling. Though it will take me some time to overcome my fear, I think I can do it,” she said, pausing and looking to the ground then back to Carvon.
There was a strange silence between the two and Carvon finally mustered up something to say. “Am I holding you up? I feel I’ve kept you for too long…” he said.
She smiled again. “Oh, no, of course not; I'm not too busy, nor do I mind talking with you,” she said.
Carvon nodded. “That’s good; I would have felt terrible if I had been stalling you. Speaking of travel, I believe we must be going; my friends here and I unfortunately have to return to our posts at the front,” he said somberly.
She looked sad. “Its fine, I understand that you guys need to be up there with the war and such. Just don't forget about us down here in Fair Fence, okay?” she said with a warm smile.
Carvon gave her a smile in return and sat up from his chair. “I won't forget you ponies. Just remember what I said, and thanks for the cakes,” he said.
She gave him a warm bashful smile. “Its fine hun, no big deal, just a few cakes… Don't you worry either, I won't forget what you said, in fact, I’ve already been considering it. I realise that no one had ever told me these things other than my mother, and now you. I guess all it took was an outsider’s thoughts…” she replied.
Vendera awkwardly stood for a second and then took one step closer to him, whispering, “Be safe, and may Luna guide you,” before standing back.
Carvon nodded turning to his ponies. “Alright, let’s thank our beautiful waitress and leave our bits at the table. We've got to head back to our post,” he said.
They all pulled from their packs the bits required of them. The sound of coins and the rustling of bags grew as they saddled up. Carvon placed the bits from his bag on the table and a few extra bits out of generosity. “Thank you guys so much for being so nice. You really did make my morning,” she said happily.
“Well I’m glad to hear it, and I hope the rest of your day goes well too,” Carvon replied.
She smiled cheerfully. “Thanks again!” she said, trotting off joyfully to the kitchen door.
Carvon watched her as she trotted away. His smile diminished to a slight look of dissatisfaction. Zeel looked over to Carvon as he touched Carvons shoulder. “There will be a time, Carvon. Love takes to us quickly if our hearts desire it. This can be misleading, grinding our own passion into dust. Just be wary and trust what Luna’s teachings bestow upon us,” Zeel said.
Carvon chuckled and then looked to Zeel. “I can only hold true to my faith and pray to our fair lady… Alright troops, let’s move out,” he said.
They all trotted out the door into the beautiful sun glazed valley. The cool breeze flowed through Carvon’s mane like the grasses around them. The sun’s rays touched their coats as the white clouds slowly rolled over the land. Shadows danced along the valley floor as they trotted down the path to there destination.
They walked for about an hour as thick overgrowth began to crowd around the road. The tall grasses slowly became thick brush and the sparse trees that once stood alone now converged to a dense forest. The sounds of birds and calming winds echoed through the woodlands as they trotted.
Carvon lead in front with Kern by his side as they held to a quiet conversation. Zeel trotted behind them silently, listening to the sounds of the forest. Tellick and Denmark strayed a few steps behind, keeping a close watch for anything strange.
“I just can't believe it. Our leave was coming up, and so many of our friends died before they could go home. We were so close, Kern,” Carvon said.
“It is hard to accept, and it is unfair and unjust, but war is cruel. I feel grief for all of our brethren, even our opposition,” Kern said.
Carvon turned his head in question. “How could you have any sympathy for them? They kill our kin and our unicorn allies and yet you feel for them?” Carvon inquired.
Kern stopped and looked Carvon in the eyes. “The pegasi are not our enemy, but merely a lost piece to our complicated, forgotten history. He replied.
Carvon thought for a bit then motioned to the rest of them who had also stopped trotting to move along. “I can't even begin to think of what's going on in Wintersing. It’s hard to believe that their civilization is still intact. I must say, if it’s not corruption or brainwashing, they have a great deal of loyalty,” Carvon said.
“I can only pray for a better solution. Too many have died over these false beliefs and this seemingly endless holy war,” Kern said quietly.
They trotted a ways down the path as the forest reached a dense patch. There was greenery everywhere with the occasional patch of flowers found along the path’s edge. Suddenly, the birds stopped chirping and the sound of branches and twigs breaking sounded through the forest, echoing in the distance.
Carvon motioned his hoof in a circular gesture. The four of them all quickly formed around him. They looked into the forest where the sounds were coming from.
Tellick’s eyes narrowed, peering into the forest, and then widened out of shock. “I see it! It’s-it’s ah, tim-timberwolf,” he said in a quivering voice.
There, a good distance away, a large timberwolf was crashing through the forest. It rustled leaves and branches, crashing into trees like a mad bull A green essence trailing from its snout and eyes as it moved. The large beast easily towered over them by half a pony and seemed almost larger than usual.
“What are your orders Carvon,” Denmark whispered.
“It doesn't look like we're avoiding this one. Its headed in our direction. Zeel, think you can hit it with an arrow?” Carvon asked.
Zeel drew an arrow from his quiver and readied his shot. “This isn’t going to kill it; ready yourselves,” he said, pulling the arrow back.
The hulking beast drew nearer, but didn't seem to notice them. The faint sound of the bow string thrung and the arrow flew towards its target. The arrow pierced into its leg, and a loud roar could be heard as the wolf turned to their direction. It charged at them, crashing through the brush, snarling and howling.
Zeel quickly drew his sword, stowing his bow. The beast leapt to them as they all jumped out of the way. It landed square in the road separating them. They all struggled to get up as it jumped for Tellick. The frightened pony rolled to his side as it landed next to him. He lashed out at it with his sword cutting at it’s leg. It let out a bellowing howl and staggered back off the road. Tellick stumbled to his hooves and moved to Denmark.
The wolf charged the two again ramming into Denmark knocking Tellick back off his hooves. Denmark was being trampled and lay on the road, struggling to get up. Kern loped towards the beast with his great sword drawn. He swung his massive blade into its back, hacking the beasts wooden hide apart. The timberwolf immediately turned to Kern and swiped at him, letting out a fierce roar. Kern dodged its massive paw, leaping back.
Zeel charged towards the wolf, sword forward as well as Carvon. Tellick got back on his hooves once more. Zeel took a slashed at the beast but it leaped out of the way. It jumped back at him swiping its massive paw. It struck his breast plate and knocked Zeel clear off of his hooves. He lay on the ground, gasping for air as Carvon slashed it’s side with his sword. The beast hit Carvon off the road into the brush.
Kern swung his sword at the creature once again. This time he missed, the creature bit at him, grabbing him by his saddle strap; Kern was thrashing around like a ragdoll. He released his saddle and fell to the floor. Kern lifted his hind legs for the beast was close enough to hit. He rolled over and kicked his legs out with all his might, thrusting the creature back a few paces. He then staggered to his sword.
As he reached his weapon the wolf had already lost its interest in him. It turned and headed to Denmark, who lay on the road alone, fighting to get up. Tellick jumped in front of the crippled wolf, swinging his sword at it. The beast let out a howl as its ear fell off of its head. It swiped, knocking Tellick to the ground. The wolf hovered over him, breathing heavily. He could see a faint black mist in the center of its green aura. An unnatural spike of fear went up his spine as he began to shake. The black mist flowed to him slowly, encompassing his head and almost putting him in a daze.
Tellick’s world turned to mist and blackened. The wolves face and the sky behind it faded, as he stood alone in the darkness, paralyzed by a heavy feeling of fear. A black bubble grew in front of him, bursting and letting out a moan. A hoof covered in a black liquid reached out as if trying to grasp for something. The snout of a familiar mare emerged from the blackened liquid. Screams of pain and terror scratch at his mind. He could see his mother and father crying out to him as they boiled in the black pit of liquid. Their skin slowly dissolved as they sunk back into the sludge, gurgling with their last amount of life. His blue eyes were slowly engulfed in the black mist as tears begin to roll down his face.
Denmark jumped onto the timberwolf’s back, stabbing it with his knife. The mist dissipated and Tellick’s eyes cleared to their natural blue. The creature jumped and thrashed all around, trying to get him off of its back. Denmark was flung off but landed back on his hooves. He then drew a small metal object from his bag.
Denmark looked to Kern with determination. Kern had just gotten up with his sword readying himself to charge. Before his attack Denmark shouted out a quick, “Leave him to me!” The Timberwolf slowly step towards him as Denmark stepped back. “Get down, Kern!” he yelled.
Kern jumped into the thick brush on the side of the road as Denmark threw the metal object that he had drawn from his bag. The object struck the wolf and an explosion scattered its pieces across the road. Denmark could feel the heat from the blast as he jumped to the floor covered by his cloak. He lay on the road, smiling to himself as the heat rolled over him.
As the explosion came to its end, smoke filled the air. A large amount of sticks and pieces of wood lay scattered across the road, somewhat charred and smoking from the blast. Kern lifted his head from the brush and looked around the road side. Carvon stepped out from the thick, brushing himself of twigs and leaves. He looked around. “Is everypony okay?” he asked.
Zeel sat up from his prone position. “I’m fine; I just took a slight blow to the chest there. I will be okay,” he said.
Tellick got up and staggered over to Carvon and Zeel. “I’m f-fine,” he said, still shaken from the wolf’s gaze.
Kern jumped from the brush and trotted to them. Denmark also moved to the group. “You took more than just a slight blow there Zeel; you just about passed out!” Kern exclaimed.
Zeel looked to Kern as he dusted himself off. “Well he got close to it,” he replied.
Carvon looked to Denmark as his friend trotted with a slight limp towards him. “Are you alright Denmark? The last thing I remember before blacking out was you on the floor,” he said.
Denmark grinned. “I gave the bastard what was coming to him,” he replied.
Carvon nodded. “I guess those bombs do have their uses sometimes. And what about you, Tellick, are you alright?” he asked, turning to Denmark.
“I’ll be fine, there was just somethin’ bout that wolf that didn’ seem right... It’s, eyes , I-I could...” Tellick paused and shrugged. “Maybe it was nothin’,” he finished.
“Perhaps it was sick? Most creatures are known to leave behind, if not kill those members who are lesser in strength or weak in any way. It also would seem even more likely since its pack is not feeding on us right this instant,” Zeel explained.
They all nodded in agreement. “I think that’s all it was, Tellick, a sick wolf that happened to stumble upon us,” Kern said.
Carvon began to pick up Kern’s things. “Nonetheless, it was still a timberwolf, and we should keep our eyes peeled for more of them,” Carvon said.
Kern looked around and saw his book, which had been lying on the floor but was miraculously unscathed. “Thank the gods,” he said with relief, dusting it off carefully.
They all began to pick up Kern’s things and put them in what was left of his saddle. “Terrible waste of food,” Kern said, trying to hold back a few tears.
“It’s okay big guy. I still have those coffee cakes, though, they might be smashed now,” Carvon said, patting Kern on the shoulder.
“I was hoping you'd say that,” Kern said with a smile.
Denmark hoofed Kerns bag to him. “Thanks. You're lucky to be alive, Denmark. Thank the gods for our protection,” Kern said.
“It had nothing to do with the gods, Kern. I paid a good amount for this blaze cloak and that's what saved me, not your gods,” Denmark lashed back.
Kern just took a deep breath and exhaled. “One day, Denmark…”
Denmark rolled his eyes. “Don't worry Kern, I'm not going to hate you for your beliefs; I’ll just have to put up with it,” he said.
“You two stop your bickering,” Carvon interjected. “The last thing we need is to argue. Just keep on the look out. Let’s press on,” he finished.
Denmark and Kern took back to their formation along with Zeel and Tellick. They trotted along the path, yet slower now, as they were beat and drained from their mishap in the woods. The forest breeze wafted past them as the trees swayed in the morning light.
“We’re getting closer to our post. Just a stretch past these trees,” Zeel said, trailing behind Carvon.
The chatter amongst them slowly dwindled and the sound of their hooves grew more apparent. The happy look upon their faces slowly faded. They all became aware of the inevitable scene in which they would all have to partake in the ritual, as the fallen soldiers await their leaders return
“Carvon, it’s been some time since we have seen death, especially with our own soldiers. Just know, when we get there, that the gods have already placed their judgment and all we can do is pray,” Kern said, looking to Carvon as they trotted abreast.
Carvon didn't look to Kern as they trotted along. “I have made my peace. They all fought bravely. They died for something greater than themselves, and that’s what counts,” Carvon said.
Kern noded. “I agree with you, and so long as you're okay... It’s hard for any of us to accept death, even in knowing of its true gift. We all lost some friends and there's nothing we can do about it.” he replied.
Carvon nodded and kept on trotting down the curved path. They passed the trees and thick running along the edge of the path. They had finally made it to the fortress. There were still a few spears scattered about its premises and smoke was still coming from behind the walls. They trotted slowly to the fortress with faces of sorrow in remembrance to the battle prior.
The guard on top of the wall looked down upon them and shouted, “Someone approaches!” A few soldiers stood at the gate as they drew near. They were not his ponies, but a detachment from the Whitepoint army. One particularly stood out from the rest as he trotted through the gate. Officer Briggs was who Carvon had given his medal to and the one he recognized.
The gate soldiers and Briggs saluted Carvon when he was close enough. Carvon looked to them. “At ease soldiers. It’s good to see you all, and it’s good to see you too, Briggs,” he said.
Brigg’s face looked shocked. “I couldn't be more blessed Carvon...” Briggs paused in disbelief. “By the gods... This is unbelieveable, am I looking at a spirit? It cannot be...you, the tunnel... I'm just glad to see you. You saved us, Carvon, I'm not sure what else to say, but thank you, ” Brigg’s eyes glistened a bit, but no tears were shed.
“You dont have to say anything; your thanks is good enough,” Carvon said.
There was a slight pause as they all stood in silence, then Briggs looked up as if to remember something. Briggs then reached into his side pouch and pulled from it the badge Carvon had given to him. “Looks like you're still in charge, so you might need this back,” he said, hoofing the badge to Carvon.
Carvon nodded and took the badge from him, placing it on his collar. “Thanks Briggs… We should get to burning the fallen and prepare for what may come to pass.” Carvon said, looking to all of his fellow ponies as he turned.
Briggs turned, moving into the fortress, as he motioned his hoof. “The ritual is already set; we just needed you to be here sir. We gathered all of the dead we could find, both earth pony and pegasus.” Briggs said.
As they walked through, the guards saluted, and those which Carvon had saved all thanked him. They all walked through the side gate which was closer to the cliffside. They could see the large wooden crematorium that had just been constructed. At its center was a white banner, decorated with the mark of Celestia. The bodies lay around it, placed in an orderly fashion.
“This isn’t right sir. We can't burn our soldiers with those vile creatures; I say we bury them in the dirt, where they belong!” Denmark yelled in frustration.
Carvon turned to Denmark with little emotion upon his face. “Denmark, restrain your tongue, you know the rules: ‘Respect is given to thy enemies as to our own kin.’” Carvon said.
Denmark became angered. “This is horse shit lieutenant! They just about killed you and you’re giving them your respects?! What-” he was stopped in his rage as Carvon twirled completely around.
“Corporal. If any more of this foul talk continues, I’ll have you court martialed,” Carvon cut him off, glaring at Denmark.
Denmark’s nose twitched as his eyes narrowed. He let out a snarl and said in a short but rough manner, “Yes sir.”
Carvon slowly turned as everypony trotted quietly to the wooden structure. There were already a few dozen soldiers there from the Whitepoint detachment awaiting their arrival. Amongst them were four members of The Spear which stood quietly to the side of the structure.
The slight breeze flowed from the vast valley cradled by death's touch. The suns rays blanketed them with a comforting warmth. Carvon looked to Kern as they stood near the crematorium. “Kern, you know what to do,” Carvon said.
Kern nodded and walked up to a table by the structure. On the table was a torch and an intricate canister of oil. He reached into his tattered saddle and pulled from it the book. He picked up the can of oil and trotted around the wooden structure, dousing the oil onto it, while reading from the book. After he made his rounds, he stopped at the table and carefully oiled the torch.
Kern trotted up to the structure and lit the torch. “Goddess Celestia, guide these warriors to the Grand Gates and grant them mercy. Your judgment is true. Your judgment is law…” Kern said as he lowered the torch into the base. The fire quickly spread around the structure as Kern stepped back and stood next to Carvon.
They all watched as it burned. The fire roared and crackled as the smoke began to rise. Carvon looked at the bodies slowly burning. The soldiers who lay in the fire looked content; their faces held no distress, no agony, just peace. The smoke danced into the sky as a warm glow illuminated those around the fire. The banner slowly caught fire as it dissolved into thin air.
Carvon looked into the smoke and could barely make out the faint apparitions of the soldiers floating into the heavens. He rubbed his eyes in disbelief. They faded into the blackened cloud and disappeared. A single tear rolled down his face. He couldn't tell if it was his mind playing tricks. He bowed his head and stood in silence. “Travel on, my brothers,” he whispered to himself.
High above in the clouds, a vast kingdom rested steadily under Luna’s beautiful night sky. The colorful lights from the pathways illuminated the kingdom as though there was a silent celebration under the moonlight. Guards walked the paths, while few and far between the night wanderers trotted, milling about and enjoying the wondrous night. The stars twinkled far off in the heavens as the sparse clouds drifted slowly around the lofty kingdom of Wintersing. It rested upon a large blanket of clouds which swayed softly as the gentle winds passed through, as though it were a flowing plain of lush grasses.
A young pegasus sat atop his nimbus, alone, overlooking the city. His light grey coat and dark blue mane almost made him one with the night sky, as he rested upon his cloud. “What am I to do? I dare not flee, I have too much passion for my kin and those I love. I don’t want to die, yet I am not afraid of death. What I fear is leaving her, alone, something I have always feared. Who will love her if I fall?... It is an unfair question for her lover to ask, but it is a question all of my kin ask and yet they do not want the answer. I know the answer and that is not I, yet I ask you for reassurance, reassurance that I will have your strength, the strength to be her lover, and that my question will not need an answer.” He sat and pondered aloud for quite some time under the light of the moon.
A small piece of cloud softly brushed against him, a wing delicately coupled him closely. The pegasus on the nimbus did not fret, and turned only to find his lover cuddling next to him. Her violet eyes shot to him like an arrow through his heart. He had always found her eyes so mesmerising even when they had first met. He knew this was Luna’s chosen spark of love. She moved closer to him and nudged his muzzle. A small spark of electricity flashed between the two as they smiled. “Why must you do this to me my love? You should be in bed, with me,” she said softly.
He turned to the moonlit city as his smile faded. “You know I would, if not for my leaving tomorrow,” he said.
She brushed his head with her wing as he turned to look at her. “Culza, please, you need your rest… That should be even more reason to be with me,” she pleaded.
He looked at her and then back to the city. “I cannot bear leaving you. You know where I am going tomorrow…” he replied.
She kept a slight smile upon her face and looked at him in concern. “Culza, I know of your duty tomorrow; you should feel honored to serve her. I do not fear for you, because Luna is your guide... You know we can never truly be separated, our love is already intertwined,” she whispered to him.
Culza sighed and turned back to her. “Luna has blessed me with such a strong mare. How could I be so blind, you are my strength, my will to live, and my world. I will not go a passing day without thinking of you Starla, even to my last breath,” he said to her as his eyes glazed over, shimmering in the moonlight.
Tears began to roll down Starla’s cheeks as Culza held her closely. Culza lowered his cloud as they drifted towards their home. When they arrived they danced together, swaying back and forth until they reached their sleeping chamber. The night finally caught up with them as they laid next to one another. The calming sight of her next to him eased his mind of the pain. As Culza looked at her, he felt that they were the only two in existence. His faith which had been shrouded by the thought of leaving was strong again and he felt joy in himself. Culza closed his eyes with Sarla in his mind and slowly fell asleep.

The sun broke through the darkness of night, bleeding forth the slow dawning of day. The cloud kingdom's enormous spires embraced the dim light from the morning sun. The darkened clouds changed to a lighter shade of blue. The flags flown for the night goddess were withdrawn and the banners of Celestia were raised.
Culza lifted the sheets off of himself and got out of bed. He stretched limb from limb while giving out a yawn. He could smell spice in the air from the kitchen. Starla had already gotten up to make him his meal. Culza trotted into the kitchen to find her cutting the spicy peppers that smelled so good, while some boiled in a small pot next to her. He moved to her and kissed her cheek. “Good morning my love,” he said.
Starla stopped cutting the spicy goods and looked to him with a joyful smile. “Good morning love; I don't want you to leave hungry, so I’m going to make you your favorite meal,” she said happily.
Culza smiled and wrapped his wing around her. “I’ll enjoy every bit of it,” he replied.
Starla embraced his hug. “I hope you do my love because I tried my best to make this one of the tastiest meals you’ll come to eat, so go ahead and take your seat at the table,” she said.
Culza nodded and released her from his wings and sat at the table. He watched her as she cut the vegetables and peppers into pieces. She slid the small pieces into a bowl with her knife and dropped them into the boiling pot. He could not bear to look at her anymore, for this could be the last time he would see her. He poured himself a glass of blueberry juice which had been set up on the table and took a drink.
Starla took out a ladle from a drawer and dipped it into the boiling broth. She took the steaming broth and poured a little into the same bowl. The broth’s scent filled the air even more so as she poured it from the ladle. She took the hot bowl and placed it in front of him on the table. She then served herself a bowl and some juice, taking a seat across from him.
She looked to him and reached out her forelegs across the table. “Let this meal, if it is our last, be one to remember my love,” she said as a tear streamed down her face.
Culza touched hooves with her. He looked down to his bowl and then to her with a warming smile. “It won't be our last meal together. I will return to you, there is no need to cry. You were strong last night, now I need you to keep that strength,” he said.
She closed her eyes tightly, trying to hold back her tears. “I just wish you didn't have to leave… I'm going to miss you,” she said.
Culza smiled. “And I am going to miss you too, but do not trouble yourself with that yet. I am still here, and far from gone,” He looked back to his steaming bowl. “Let’s eat our meal love, before it becomes too cold and your hard work is not enjoyed at its best,” he said, picking up his spoon.
Starla nodded and patted her tears away with a dinner cloth. They sat quietly at the dinner table, eating their meals. Every so often they would look to one another and smile, then continue eating. They could hear the morning winds outside their window and could see the cloud colors change as the sun slowly arose, illuminating their floating empire.
Their meals had been finished and the time for suiting up had come. Culza trotted into their chamber while Starla trailed behind him. In the corner of the room there was a chest which held Culza’s uniform and armor. Above that was his sword which was hanging above the chest.
Starla opened the chest and began to pull out its contents. She wrapped a tunic around him as well as a belt and a sheath for his sword. She then slipped on his hoof covers and then braided his mane. She mounted his breast plate across his chest and then strapped on his boots. The final piece was his helmet, which she held for a moment in her forelegs. She was unable to complete the task.
Culza nudged her snout and looked her in the eyes. No words were spoken and she kissed him one last time before he had to go and placed the helmet over his head. Culza picked up his sword, placed it in his sheath, and began to trot towards the door as Starla followed. Culza stopped just before leaving and turned to her. “Just remember what I told you, and keep your heart with the gods,” he said.
She hung her head as tears streamed down. “I will,” Starla replied.
He knew their was nothing more to say than what had already been said. If he had stayed any longer he knew only heartbreak would follow. Culza turned and headed off towards the city, fearing to look back. The sun was still just over the horizon line and the city’s lights began to fade out. He trotted through the quiet neighborhood knowing many soldiers were preparing for their unknown fate.
He could see some other warriors trotting down the way, talking amongst one another quietly. Culza had almost forgot that he was going to meet his friends by the local market.
I hope they're still there, this morning is just going downhill for me, he thought to himself.
The market was closed and a few more soldiers dressed in the same uniforms passed by, but his friends were nowhere in sight. He waited a few minutes to see if they might have been running late as well.
They’re gone; I must have been too slow.
As he was about to leave he could hear his name being called out from behind him. “Hey! Culza!” the familiar voice yelled out. He turned around and could see Poltin, a blue coated stallion with a white mane, loping towards him. Behind him trotted Vinard, a red coated, green haired stallion, dressed in uniform.
“It’s good to see you Culza! I almost didn't wake up this morning,” Poltin said.
Culza smiled at the sight of them and raised his hoof to greet them. “Ah, sleeping in again huh? Well it’s good you made it, and here I thought I was late. Let’s head over to the sanctum,” he said.
Poltin and Vinard nodded to one another as they all started to trot down the pathway. A few other soldiers were a ways behind them, headed in the same direction. The morning sun’s rays lit their coats and shining helmets as the city was barely waking.
Poltin trotted up next to Culza. “You guys are so lucky, being able to serve our empire is an honor to us all and to the gods… are you nervous?” he asked.
Culza shook his head, then looked up though as to think for a second. “Well, I guess I’m a bit nervous, though I have been pondering, why we are even going in the first place? We have been at peace for quite some time now,” he replied.
“Hmm, well I've heard that the emperor himself gave the order, and if it’s his order, then it is the gods’ will,” Poltin stated
Culza looked to Vinard, who was trotting quietly beside Poltin. “Hmm, I can't argue with that... Why are you so quiet Vinard?” Culza asked.
Vinard cleared his throat. “I'm not for this suicidal mission the emperor is sending us on, but who am I to defy the gods. I just hope that we make it through this,” he said.
“Are you afraid Vinard?” Culza asked.
“I am fearful of this war, not because of death itself, but because of the consequences it will bring to all of us. What I fear is the burden of survival, knowing that we must kill to live, kill another mare’s love, another father’s colt, another mother’s filly. I don't want to kill them. I don’t want to kill anyone. I just want what’s best for our great empire, but it seems the only way to achieve that goal is through violence and aggression. I just pray that the gods give us a swift victory, so that less lives can be lost,” Vinard explained.
“I understand, but we just have to do our best to cope with those burdens. We are the chosen race. We were born into this conflict for a reason; it is all a test of our faith to our gods,” Culza stated.
“You're right about that, and I wouldn’t dare deny our birth right, it would be an insult to Celestia herself... I love my kin, and the empire, I have faith that we will prevail.” Vinard said.
“Its good to see a slight change of heart, Vinard,” Culza said.
Vinard just shrugged as he couldn't think of anything to say. They trotted down the road and all conversation stopped amongst them. The soldiers in front of them had also stopped talking. The sounds of the winds howled through the city as it grazed past their feathers. The three trotted silently as the morning sun lifted higher in the sky, bringing forth its warmth.
Early risers, workers and business pegasi alike, stepped from their homes to start their day. Out of respect, every pegasus that came across a soldier in uniform would bow before them before continuing on their way. Though it seemed like a lot of pegasi were out and about, the city remained quiet.
Vinard finally broke the silence after they had trotted for a few minutes. “My father used to tell me the stories of his survival during the last great war. He had always told me that he had envied the dead, for they would suffer no more, and were better off than the living. He doesn't speak of them anymore.... His tales keep running through my head, now more than ever. It’s making me anxious to get through with this,” Vinard explained.
“My father never told me his stories of the war, though, as a child, I never wanted to hear them anyways,” Culza replied.
“I wish I could have heard tales from my father... but his service to the empire took him straight to the fields, gods bless him,” Poltin said, head facing the ground.
“They were all heroes, Poltin. You will have your time to serve,” Culza replied.
“Look, we’ve reached the holy sanctum,” Vinard said quietly.
The path grew in size as it led to a large crystal gate. Two towers spiraled up to the sky, where pegasi marksmen sat atop their roost. Cirrus, the emperor's elite guard, also stood watch at the gate, allowing the soldiers entrance. There were more guards quietly trotting high upon the sanctum walls which surrounded the dome that covered the entire sanctum. Though the dome was transparent, the inside was shrouded in a magical mist.
Hundreds of pegasi were already standing near the gate, mostly pegasi citizens and soldiers who had not yet trotted through. Mothers and fathers were saying their goodbyes to their loving sons; tears were shed as they trotted through the gate, but nothing more.
They trotted up to the gate where Culza looked to his friends. “My mother is waiting for me near the tower. I am going to go and talk with her, and say my goodbyes.” He then looked to Poltin. “You’re a good friend Poltin, but I believe it is about that time, for we will soon be entering the sanctum…” Culza said somberly.
Poltin gave a sad look to Culza and Vinard. “I hope to see you again, friends; sister’s blessings, and may your blades bring truth,” he said, taking a step back and turning, to return home.
“I’ll meet you back here at the gate; my mother also awaits my arrival.” Vinard said to Culza.
Culza nodded and the two split to different directions, falling into the large crowd of weeping and heartbroken pegasi. Culza’s mother was behind the colossal spiraling tower, near the wall, sitting on a cloud. She wore a velvet blue cloak and wool lined cloth boots. Her dark blue coat and cyan mane were rough and aged. When Culza approached she flew from the cloud and came closer to him.
Culza reached out to hug his mother as she embraced his hold. “I’m so happy to see you Mom… I just wish this wasn’t the reasoning,” he said, still holding her.
“I wouldn't miss this, as much as it pains me.” She pulled back to look at him, her eyes red with tears. “You look just like your father in that uniform…. He’d be so proud of his son,” she said, sobbing quietly.
Culza stood quietly with a smile, enjoying his mother's presence. She pulled the amulet she had been wearing off and held it in her hoof. It was a sapphire that had been cut into the shape of a crescent, the sign of Luna. A silver brace held the sapphire gem in place. The chain it hung from was also a glimmering silver.
“This is yours now Culza; your father gave it to me, and now I’m giving it to you.... It will protect you, just like it protected your father in battle,” she said, putting the amulet around his neck.
He looked to her and smiled. “Thanks Mom, I’ll make sure I take care of it,” he said before kissing her on the forehead.
She touched his cheek with her wing. “Go on my son, and be safe,” she said, pushing him along as tears dripped from her eyes.
Culza didn't want to see his mother cry anymore and decided to leave to the gate. When he reached it he turned to look for his mother one last time, but she had vanished. Vinard was already trotting up to Culza, having just finished saying his goodbyes. Vinard nudged Culza’s shoulder. “I know it’s hard, but we are so much closer now, and there’s no turning back,” he said.
“I know, let’s go through the gate,” Culza said.
The fog seemed to dissipate as they trotted through but not completely. The sanctum was clear now, and they could see the full view of the beautiful garden which had been blocked by the wall and fog. There were trees with all sorts of different colored crystals on them which swayed in the gentle breeze. As they looked closer they realized that these crystals were growing off of the branches themselves. The color spectrum of these magnificent minerals ranged in many, creating a rainbow like effect which was cast upon the sanctum.
“This place is huge, Vinard, I just can’t believe we are actually trotting in it. I feel honored.” Culza said, baffled at the colossal beauty.
“That you should, my mother said it’s one of the largest structures built by any pony, and we have the honor of housing it here in the pegasi kingdom. Just another reason to believe that we were the chosen ones,” Vinard replied.
As they approached the main structure at the dome’s center, two massive statues stood at the entrance. One statue, of Luna, had eyes that glowed a bright blue, and the other, of Celestia, had eyes that glowed a brilliant white.
Massive supports held up the sanctum’s crystal walls, which had beautifully carved inlays that skirted its premises. The pathway leading to the structure, which was a good stretch from the walls to the sanctum, was covered on both sides with colorful flowers of all variations. The large stain glass windows held the tales of legends and heroes from the past.
They trotted past the large statues which stood as tall as the trees and went into the sanctum. They could see, even from where they were, that there were a few hundred ponies suited up in armor sitting at intricately carved crystal pews. As they trotted into the structure they were awed by the colossal interior. The beautiful colors cast upon the walls from the sun’s rays were making the already magnificent room look like the fields themselves. Artwork depicted out of The Bridal were carved, cut, painted, and sculpted all about the prestigious foundation, further fulfilling that sensation.
As they trotted through the doors they saw the high point in which their emperor would be speaking. They looked around the room and noticed that the majority of the soldiers were young pegasi around the same age. They took their seats near the back, as those seats were the only ones available, and talked amongst one another quietly.
Vinard whispered to Culza, “I thought we were going to be early; I guess we didn't call it a night soon enough.”
“I would have to agree. This place is full of ponies; now I feel bad for not waking any earlier,” Culza said.
Culza put his hoof to his forehead and whispered to himself, “Oh sisters forgive me, I hope I haven’t failed thee yet.”
“Ah, nonsense Culza, we arrived late. The gods do not expect perfection, just good faith, and so long as we are here to serve, then we shall be on good terms,” Vinard said.
Culza nodded and smiled to Vinard and they sat quietly. A few minutes past and more soldiers came through the entrance. They sat near Vinard and Culza but kept quiet or talked with their company. Culza turned to Vinard. “This will be the first time we have seen the new emperor; the last time we saw the emperor was during our grand blessing into the Wintersing academy,” Culza said.
“It’s true, I have not seen him since then either. He rarely comes out of his castle and has most of his servants do his work. He really doesn't come out unless it is a major occasion… like this one.” Vinard replied.
The door to the sanctum closed and the two guards stood silent as statues. It was quiet and all were settled upon their seats, ears raised as the clicking of polished hooves knocked along the marble floors. The echoing rattled all around and the attention was focused at the center high point. Velvet blue and white banners laced in gold draped from the top floor. A prim and straight edged looking stallion stood atop the high point. His blue and white robes could be defined by all pegasi to be of religious value.
He cleared his throat. “All stand in respect for our emperor.”
They all stood still and obedient as they heard even more hooves approach the speaking area. The emperor and two guards stood near the clergypony. All eyes and ears were on the emperor now. He lifted his hoof and began to speak.
“Brothers, for quite some time we have been denied our right to lead our fellow kinsmen, to act out our god given purpose as guardians of these lands, or to feed the plants which need feeding. The light which we bring has been suppressed for too long. It is time we take the fight to our kin once again. If they are not willing to join us then we will make them through force. Our time has come to be the race we were created to be. By Celestia’s power and Luna’s ambition we will prove victorious,” the emperor stated.
The clergypony looked to the emperor and bowed. The emperor nodded to him and turned back to the soldiers on the lower floor. “Now brothers, the decree of battle,” the emperor said.
The clergypony stepped forward and opened the Divinity’s Bridal. He raised his hoof and all bowed, even the emperor. “Celestia says, ‘Let thy sun shine from thee in darkness to bring all those in shadows enlightenment.’ Luna says, ‘Let the night heal thy pains for my love shall cast upon thee to bring good faith and fortune.’ Glory to thy Sisters,” he finished.
The mass of soldiers all replied in unison, “Glory to thy Sisters!”
The clergypony stepped aside and the emperor trotted to the high point facing the mass of troops. “Your leaders are the chosen disciples of the gods; let them guide you to victory! Now, go my brothers,” the emperor said.
Hundreds of pegasi stood and headed to their meeting locations. Culza looked to Vinard. “I’m already nervous, but the emperor's soldiers are strong; we will prevail,” Culza said.
Vinard nodded. “The gods are with us as they always have been. Our mission will be a success,” he replied. They both trotted out to leave the sanctum. As they passed through the massive entryway there were priests standing at both sides of the doors. They were holding silver rods with soft white bristles on their ends, which resembled the tail of a pony. The priests dipped the extravagant brush into the vat of holy water and began to toss it onto the warriors as they had begun to leave. The water was blessed by the emperor himself and was a token of protection.
The priests repeated many sayings of an inspiring nature such as, “Through the gods and for the emperor,” and, “Wings for the true blood.” The words rang in Culza’s head and slowly began to lift his uneased spirits.
Vinard looked to Culza as they left the large dome. “It’s time to fly,” Vinard said, spreading his wings and otherwise stretching his limbs.
Culza nodded and they, along with hundreds of others, took to the skies. While soaring through the clouds they rallied into their flight formations, linking up with their flight leaders, or with the veterans of their forces. One of the biggest pegasi Culza and Vinard had ever seen was joining them on this mission. Captain Dreath Horizon was one of the very few who could fly in full plate with a greatsword which most average pegasi could not wield. Dreath’s wings had a much greater spread than the others and his eyes were an unnatural yellow. He was given the task of leading them into battle by the emperor himself.
No words were spoken during the flight as they had to be quiet and stay focused. There were clouds focused around them to conceal their ranks and to give them the element of surprise. However, every now and again the Cloud Cloakers would get tired and some other pony would have to switch places. Special teams of Storm Bringers scouted ahead to create clouds and bring a stormfront forward. This would give them the element of surprise, and though the clouds were obvious, they were still concealed within mist.
Certain pairs of pegasi were carrying large amounts of spears wrapped in fabric. Every other warrior had their blade sheathed at their side. The cold winds were of no bother to the pegasi, shielded by their magical fields of wind resistance. The flight took hours but nonetheless they were ready to fight and die for the emperor.
Thunder rolled across the vast field known as the front. A small gap from which only the pegasi could see out of opened. A Storm Bringer approached the captain. “Sir, we’re approaching the first camp.”
The captain looked to his warriors and then to the scout. “We are nearing the first strike point. Prepare the spears,” Dreath ordered.
Spears were now being passed around to the soldiers. Culza and Vinard took one each and waited for their captain's command to begin the assault. Culza looked to Vinard. He could see the bravery in him, the fearlessness. Vinard nodded to him and looked back to the captain. Dreath’s hoofs pointed in the direction of the camp. “Forward, and await my signal,” Dreath said.
They flew calmly now as a tiny window opened below the captain. Culza’s heart was thumping now, as he eyed Dreath for the signal. It was almost quiet, with only the sound of the thunder. The calming color of the clouds eased his mind for the coming battle. He took it all in before Dreath motioned the signal. Culza hurtled his spear into the mist, as did all of his fellow soldiers. Dreath roared out to his stallions, “Dive!”
Culza and Vinared dipped into the mist and followed behind their falling spears. They could see the large camp now where their enemies were loping about. They could hear and see the arrows flying towards them as their brothers were pelted by them. The spears pierced more than enough enemies to clear a landing zone. Culza landed near a few stationary structures which were sheltering soldiers from their attack.
“Kill the dogs!” one of his enemies shouted. Culza drew his sword and then picked out a spear from the ground. Two of his comrades landed near him and drew their weapons for the attack. Two earth ponies charged them with their spears pointed forward. Culza hurtled the spear, which flew past one of the charging ponies, which was enough to make the pony stumble during his charge. The other charging spearpony struck Culza’s comrade in the neck, forcing him to the ground. Culza was in a bit of shock, but shook it off. He swung his sword forcing it into the snout guard of the earth pony's helm. The thick armor took most of the blow, however, his face was bloodied as Culza’s victim let out a shrill shriek. Culza swung again, this time cutting his snout clear off of his face. Blood sprayed all about Culza’s helmet and breast plate as his enemy laid twitching and screeching on the floor.
His still standing ally picked up a spear and threw it at another charging enemy, striking the target through the mouth. Culza called out to Vinard for he had lost his friend during the landing. “Vinard! Where are you!” He could not get any response nor could he see him. There was a nearby tent, which would have been his first guess to find Vinard. He rushed into the shelter hoping for the best.
There on the ground was Vinard, struggling with an earth pony who was attempting to drive a knife through him. Culza galloped to Vinard and swung his sword at his enemy. Yet again the thick armor proved too strong as the earth pony gave out a yelp. He swung once more driving it into the earth pony’s spine. Grunts and sounds of pain came from his mouth. Culza ripped out his sword and shoved the pony off of his prone friend. Vinard picked up his sword. “This is much worse than I thought.” He glanced to the dead and battered earth pony on the floor. “This is only the beginning Culza, for this bloodshed must not be in vain,” he said.
Culza looked at his kill and back to Vinard. “They are in The Fields now, and they will soon know our rightful place! Now, let’s finish this, for the emperor!” he shouted, galloping out of the tent.
They charged out of the tent, blades at the ready. They saw many soldiers that had spears driven into their bodies squirming about. Most of the enemies were cleared out quite quickly. Culza looked around for the captain but could only see lesser pegasi and earth ponies. Then he saw the captain, who was carrying a head by its mane. Dreath trotted calmly out of a tent, blood dripping down his plate mail. He dropped the lifeless white coated face, which thudded to the ground. “Victory is ours!” Dreath shouted.
Culza and Vinard could see a few stragglers still fighting for their lives. The pegasi outnumbered the very few remaining earth ponies who were not willing to surrender. However, their deaths soon dawned upon them and the camp became quiet. The only sound that could be heard was that of the small droplets of rain from their coming storm.
Captain Dreath rallied his troops around him. “We will soon press on to the next camp. Those who are too weak to fly or can no longer fight, burn our fallen brethren and head back to Wintersing. Let the emperor and our kin know of our success. The rest of you are with me; we will finish this fight for the emperor!” Dreath shouted. He gave the motion to move out. No one dared question his authority. Many of them had already begun to pick up what spears were still good, restocking their spear holding companions. They flapped their wings and took to the skies. Low clouds had already been moved onto the area by the Storm Bringers to conceal the large ascending force.
As they moved further into the earth pony lines and on to the next camp they saw an increase of fortification. A scout broke through the clouds and approached Dreath, gliding near him. “Sir, the next camp is only three miles from our current location and roughly one thousand feet below from our flight level.” Dreath nodded with approval and the scout flew back out.
They flew for a bit longer, until the cloud window opened underneath Dreath. The fog was now a ways behind their forces, allowing the captain to see the land mass. Dreath looked to the spear bearers. “Prepare for the assault,” he commanded. Culza received a spear, as well as Vinard, who had both been quiet, just like the rest of their comrades.
Culza’s head was spinning from all of this chaos and bloodshed. The tales which his father had left him were now a reality. He tried to drive it out of his head but his attempt failed. The body language and facial expressions apparent upon his fellow pegasi brethren were of no help. Sorrow, despair, loss, and fear were all conjured into their cloud of death. Culza could not say anything, but what he was really thinking was that he had wanted to be home with his lover, something he was sure most others wanted as well. He didnt even want to think of who he had just killed. He felt sick and was disgusted with himself, but could not do anything about it.
Dreath raised his hoof. “We are over the second camp. Prepare to drop.“ All of them readied their spears, and then the hoof dropped. They thrust down their spears to the ground below as they had done before and dived into the grey mist, following their deadly hell shower. The camp was much larger, than the last, however, with the large force of pegasi descending upon it, it seemed it would be taken quickly. The spears fell upon the camp as the pegasi swooped down upon the earth ponies. Once the pegasi were grounded upon the death ridden camp, they found that the earth pony resistance was much heavier than that of the last.
The terrifyingly skilled earth pony warriors killed a great number of Dreath’s troops. Culza could see the skilled fighters and hardened veterans cut down his brethren as though their training in the academy meant nothing. Dreath toppled through many of his enemies, tearing them open with his massive sword. With skilled maneuverability the Capitan launched himself into the air and struck his enemies from above, sometimes splitting their spines or mangling their heads. Vinard and Culza managed to stay close to one another. This time around they fought side by side and faced their enemies together. In a short period of time the camp was taken and only a few stragglers remained.
Culza and Vinard fought their way to a group of tents which looked as though they housed a few troops, with various pots and miscellaneous wares scattered about. Vinard looked over to Culza and said quietly, “I’ll check out these three and you check check out the others.”
Culza nodded in reply and approached the tents cautiously. Sword drawn, he approached the first tent and slowly peered through the tent drape. He could only hear the battle in the background as sweat dripped down his face. He moved the drape and swept into the tent. It was empty. Only a few spears which had ripped through the tent and sleeping rolls could be found lying around. Culza was turning to leave when he noticed a necklace hanging from a wooden post that was lodged in the ground inside the tent. It was a beautiful necklace made up of silver holding in place a white diamond.
He thought about Starla and paused, looking at the necklace in his hoof. It is so beautiful, this could only have been the work of a crystal pony gem smith. Such a valued treasure should not be left for barbarians or raiders. If I leave it, it will be destroyed or stolen along with all other valuables left here in the camp. I could give it to Starla...
He tucked the necklace under his breastplate where it wouldn't be lost and left the tent. When he came out he saw Vinard creep out of the tent across from him, giving him the “okay it’s clear” nod. Culza moved down to the next tent he didn't know what to expect as his heart raced faster than his hooves were moving him. His body shook as he pulled back the drapes on the tent, but before he could open it, he heard wheezing and heavy breathing. A rough and gurgling voice said slowly, “Snicks... is, is that you?”
Culza froze as his eyes widened and his heart almost stopped. He pushed the drape to the side and stepped into the tent. He slowly trotted towards an earth pony who was lying in his bed with a spear stuck in his side. The earth pony’s eyes narrowed as he was moving his limbs slowly. Blood was steadily flowing from his wound. The bloodied earth pony cringed at Culza. “I hope my brothers kill you, you winged beast,” he said, coughing up blood.
Culza did not feel angry, nor did he show any emotional response to his words. He stood there looking at the slowly dying pony. The wounded earth pony took his last breath. “You’re just a monster… No glory in the fields…” His body stopped moving while Culza stood over him. The blood still poured from his body and onto his bed roll. Culza could hear swords ringing and cries of agony. He dropped to his knees, eyes still fixed on the pierced pony. Vinard came into the tent. “Culza what's wrong?” he asked, nudging Culza’s shoulder.
Culza got up slowly and turned to his friend. “I feel sick, just a little, but I’ll be fine,” he replied.
“Okay, are you sure you’re alright?” Vinard asked again, looking over to the body.
“I’m sure” Culza clarified.
“Okay then, did you find anything?” Vinard questioned.
“No, no its all clear…” Culza replied.
“Then lets move out. On your hooves soldier,” Vinard said, lifting him up. Culza pulled himself together and willingly lifted himself up. As they left the tent Culza looked back at the body, seeing that the ponys face had not changed from its emotionless state, then slowly trotted out of the tent.
As they left the tent they could hear their fellow pegasi shouting out to them. “Don't let them escape!” Two earth pony messengers, a good distance away from them, were moving into the forest. Vinard pulled a spear from the ground and charged after them. Culza took one up and did the same.
Culza shouted to one of his fellow soldiers that was closer to the camp, “Find the captain and warn him of the messenger!”
Dreath was trotting about the camp reveling in their victory when one of his fellow warriors approached him in a hurry. “Captain! A messenger escaped through the forest path, we followed to pursue him when we were cut off by more of their filth,” said the panting soldier.
Dreath looked around the camp and then looked to a group of pegasi who had gathered around him awaiting further orders. “With me, quickly now, to the skies! Storm Bringers we need cover in the forest, get to it!” Dreath ordered, as they flew off into the air. Soon enough the entire force mopped up the rest of the camp with in minutes of his leaving. They quickly tailed behind him killing any stragglers and looking for anypony who could possibly be alive.
The Storm Bringers moved through the forest as fast as they could, bringing forth the thick layer of fog that was masking the rest of their force. They flew through the fog and heard the messengers hooves pounding on the forest floor. Soon enough they heard the galloping stop and the forest was quiet. Dreath ordered his troops to move to the forest floor and they slowly descended. He sniffed the air and looked to his comrades. “Hoof me your spear soldier. Scan the area; I can smell his filth,” he said quietly, motioning his hoof left and then right.
The spearpony hoofed him the spear before slowly creeping into the fog with the rest of his brethren. Dreath didn't move and the forest was quiet again. Even his own soldiers could barely be heard in the distance. He slowly lifted his spear and with a powerful thrusting of his weapon it flew directly into the messenger’s shoulder, pinning the unfortunate target to a tree.
Culza and Vinard had barely caught up to him along with the rest of the force. By that time they had already been trotting up from behind their captain. Dreath moved over to the pinned messenger and drew his sword. They all watched as Dreath swung his sword into the messenger’s neck. The sheer snapping sound crackled through the forest as the pinned pony’s head rolled off. He pulled the spear from the lifeless body and looked over the the spearpony. “Look in that bag, sergeant,” Dreath said, hoofing it back to him.
The spearpony rummaged through the bag as all of them watched in silence. Culza looked at the dead earth pony next to Dreath. He closed his eyes, bowed his head and began to pray to Celestia.
Sister of the sun, may our light shine true, and may our fellow fallen kin rest easy in the Fields of Harmony.
Culza heard the sergeant chuckle quietly. “Sir, all I found were some trinkets and these,” the sergeant said. Culza could see the two letters being hoofed to the captain, who turned to the rest of his men and held them up. “These are messages to the other outposts we took earlier, those pathetic excuses for front line defences. Now it is time we take out their last outpost,” he said in his rough voice, putting the letters in his small bag.
The sergeant looked to the captain with displeasure. “Sir, the men are tired, and those camps were much smaller than our scouts report this one is,” he said.
The captain glared at the sergeant. “Warriors do not rest! We’ve pushed this far; by the emperor I will destroy these filthy creatures with every last sword and shield I have! And if you have a problem with that I'll cut you down myself for insubordination! Do you understand me, sergeant?”
The sergeant snarled. “Yes, sir,” he relented, as he prepared for flight. The sound of wings bellowed through the forest and soon silence clung to the trees.
The Storm Bringers had already moved ahead while the main force tailed behind them. They were not moving as fast as they had been during the first assault for the soldiers were now near exhaustion. Culza panned to all of his brethren, he could see the dead expressions every pony held. Blood covered armor and shields, blades and spears. Cuts and gashes lay in those who bravely came along knowing they could have just left. Culza knew that they could have returned home to their families, but they hadn’t; they decided to stay and fight.
The brave souls knew that death had already taken many of their comrades to the Fields, but held to their orders and their oaths. They would die for the emperor and listen to their god appointed leaders at all costs. The mass of troops prepared for the final assault. As done before, the spears were hoofed out to every pony who could bear one.
The captain was scoping the ground when a different scout flew up next to him. “Sir, the final target is in sight. It’s roughly a mile ahead and thirteen-hundred feet below our altitude,” the scout explained.
Dreath nodded and they slowly began their descent to get a few hundred feet closer. Dreath said to his troops, “On my signal.” He raised his hoof. Culza was more nervous than before; his body was full of adrenalin and yet he was tired and sore. His stomach was now rumbling, for the last meal he had eaten was Starla’s soup. Culza’s eyes could not see the fortress, but his judgment was left in the sight of their leader who knew exactly where it was. Dreath’s hoof dropped and Culza threw his spear right into the grey mist.
Only a few seconds after the spears flew, Dreath and the rest of the warriors dived down into the unknown. They fell like rain from their cloud, descending to what could have been their imminent dooms. Just past the cloud wall they could see the fortress, perched up next to a rocky cliff overlooking the front. This was not like the other fortifications, which they had attacked just hours ago. Its walls and structures were constructed of steel, iron, and wood. Atop the wall he could see weapons of war that sent chills down his spine. The earth pony tools of death, known to them as bolter cannons, were a pegasus army's worst nightmare.
Culza cried out in a mix of anger and fear, “Sisters give me strength!” He could see the many, still standing, ponies galloping to their bolters as he dove as quickly as he could. The bolts had begun to fly towards them. Culza heard the swift pieces of metal zip past his head while countless fellow soldiers were being punctured around him. Vinard had been next to him the entire time and was blessed enough to have been spared from the spray of death.
The earth ponies were more fortified in this stronghold than they had been in prior camps. In all of their previous battles they had only found tents, with only a few metal structures. Though this post was covered in heavily-armed earth pony soldiers, along with their bolter cannons, the pegasi force still had them outnumbered. Culza and Vinard landed on top of the wall, where they had a good view of the whole courtyard. Bodies of the earth pony soldiers lay pinned to the ground, pierced by spears. Their limbs twitched as they reached for their swords in an attempt to fend for their lives.
Culza looked to them with discomfort, but did not bother with killing any of them. He stayed focused on the still standing threats, which were all around him. Culza and Vinard had their swords drawn as they charged into battle, fighting their enemies along the walls. Pegasi forces swooped into the base, taking out guards along the walls and landing in the courtyard. Swords rang and spears were thrown as the pegasi onslaught continued. Culza had just pulled his sword from an earth pony warrior when Vinard called for his help.
Culza saw him fighting two earth pony warriors. He galloped to his comrade as fast as he could. Along the way he picked up a spear and thrusted it toward one of them, ripping into his enemy’s face. The limp body shook as its sword dropped and it rolled over the wall. The young earth pony warrior clashed swords with Vinard. Pushing off of Vinard’s sword, the earth pony spun around and kicked him in the chest, almost sending him over the wall. Another pegasus landed near Vinard to aid in the fight.
The pegasus helped Vinard up as Culza fought the young earth soldier. The other two pegasi rushed to flank behind their unfortunate enemy. To no surprise to the pegasi, the young Goldhoof soldier stood his ground, barely fighting off all three of them. Then, from behind, Vinard came with a sword ripping through his chest. A black-maned, grey-coated earth pony stood behind him as he pulled the sword from his body. His face contorted with pain, Vinard dropped his sword and fell over. “No!” Culza cried out, still fighting the threat in front of him.
The pegasus turned to swing his sword, but missed, and instead kicked Vinard’s killer over the edge of the wall and into the courtyard. Culza grew angry. Fear was no longer on his mind; there was only rage. His sword began to glow a brilliant blue and pulsated with an electrical energy. His eyes turned a white-blue fire, emitting a slight glow. Culza swung his blade, burning straight through the metal and cutting the earth pony’s sword in two. Culza’s blade sliced once more, cutting from the shoulder to the neck.
The pony’s head clung on by a small portion of sizzling flesh and melted platemail. The shambling pony stepped back and forth, then flopped to the ground with no further motion. Culza stood before the sizzling body, breathing heavily. His sword slowly died out and his eyes turned back to their original original state. He rushed to his friend’s side while the other pegasus stood in shock.
Culza looked into his friends drained eyes. “Why... this can’t be! No, I was right here, I could have saved you…” Culza held Vinard’s body up, blood slowly beginning to cover his forelegs and clothing. Tears rolled from his eyes as he sat with his friend. “Your father was right, I do envy the dead.” He slowly pulled off his helmet. “For you have to suffer no more, and if I do not die...” Culza closed Vinard’s eyes. “Then I will suffer… you were the first friend I ever met...” he said somberly under his breath.
A horn sounded off in the courtyard and the earth ponies began to retreat into their fortress. The pegasus standing behind Culza spoke. “Look I’m sorry for your loss, but we have to finish this; don't let his death be in vain.”
Culza looked up to him and nodded. He gently lay his fallen friend’s head down and flew to the gate. His brethren chanted, “Heretics, heretics, heretics...” over and over, and soon Culza began to chant it as well. The gate was being hacked open by anypony who had brought an axe or hammer. The door began to crack along its wooden sections, making the door unstable.
A spear jetted out from the other side of the gate, stabbing one of the pegasi. Just as that had been done, another pegasus pulled the wounded soldier out from the doorway. Dreath lifted his hoof and the chanting stopped. Culza flew closer to the gate, eventually landing near it. Dreath slowly trotted to the gate, the clanking of his heavy armor seemingly drowning out all other sound. Dreath turned to his troops. “He’s mine,” he ordered. Without warning, he spun around and kicked the gate, almost breaking it off of its hinges.
He strutted into the structure as all of the pegasi stood watching at the gate. Culza could see Vinard’s killer standing before Dreath, armed with with a sword and shield. He grew angry but would not disobey his orders. The two stared one another down until the captain finally drew his sword, a menacing grin falling upon his face. A loud battle cry filled the room as the the captain charged the fiend. Dreath swung his great sword towards his target, barely missing as the defender rolled to the left. The earth soldier picked himself back up, swinging his sword at Dreath.
The captain bashed the earth pony's sword from his hoof, causing him to stagger back, still holding on to his shield. The captain swung his great sword once again, but the earth warrior blocked it with his shield. Another blow came down on the shield, breaking the staggering earth pony’s fetlock and causing him to drop his shield. Giving out a yelp, he jumped for his sword.
The earth pony managed to swipe up his sword, though he was still cringing in pain, as Dreath charged towards him. The earth pony swung his blade, breaking Dreath’s charge, but missed his swing. The captain stopped and brandished his sword wildly towards his enemy.
In the midst of their combat, the large pegasus’ heavy blade cut open his enemy’s hind leg, crippling his target’s step, and causing the pony to fumble backwards. Culza watched as his captain was going to finish his friend's killer. The armored pegasus lifted his sword to make his deadly blow, but before he could the fiend jumped to his side. The massive blade came down upon the wooden floor with such colossal force that it embedded itself into the ground.
The earth pony stood as fast as he could and took advantage of Dreath’s mistake. With a quick slice to Dreath’s face the earth warrior cut through his helmet, tearing his eye in half, leaving a nasty wound. Blood spewed from Dreath’s face as he shielded his eye, shouting in pain. Culza grabbed a spear and rushed to aid his captain.
Culza could see the earth soldier limping to his shield as blood ran from his foreleg and hind leg. He stood shaking from pain and weariness. Culza went with his allies to surround the heretic and cornered the fiend. Off in the distance another horn gave way. Culza knew that his enemies were coming with more reinforcements.
One of the pegasi standing next to Culza charged their staggered enemy with his spear at point. The defender bashed the spear out of the way with his shield and drove his blade into the pegasus’ neck. Culza followed behind him with his spear, thrusting it into his enemy’s side, penetrating through the armor.
Culza pushed the spear in further as the blood gushed out from his victim’s side. His fellow pegasi looked to one another, and then to the speared earth pony. A voice from the gate called out to them. “We need to get out of here; we are outnumbered!” Culza pulled the spear out of his enemy’s blood drenched side and galloped for the gate.
Culza could see his fellow soldiers fleeing to the skies as a large group of earth ponies charged from one side of the fortress into the far side of the courtyard. He could see Dreath on a wall shouting orders. “Goldhoof reinforcements have arrived! To the skies my brothers!” Culza rushed to Vinard’s body, where he pulled with all of his might but was not strong enough to pick his friend’s corpse up. Suddenly, the same pegasus who fought alongside him when Vinard died flew down and helped lift Vinard’s lifeless body off of the wall.
They flew into the mist that the Storm Bringers had created in order for their forces to escape into the clouds. The sight of his own men made him sigh in relief. However, he was still bearing his friend, which made the situation worse. Not many pegasi flew with them this time; the uplifted force he had started with was now a whittled down, broken spirit heading to where they had wished they had never left.
Culza looked to the pegasus which helped him in carrying his friend. “Thanks…. You don't know what this means to me,” he said somberly.
The pegasus turned to Culza and gave a friendly smile, but turned away as the smile faded. No words were said to one another after that. The was just silence and the calming sound of wind. The long flight home was hard and tiresome, as the soldiers were all flying slow and giving very little in the way of conversation or expression. Dreath was quiet the entire flight back, a bandage now over his eye. The medical pegasi created a stretcher out of crystalised cloud for Vinard’s body.
The sun was setting and the pegasi were tired. Just as they flew over a few clouds, off into the distance they could see their beautiful city of Wintersing. Culza whispered to himself, “We’ve made it old friend. You’re home...”
“Just remember what I told you, and keep your heart with the gods.”
