Prologue
It had been about two weeks since Snow Lane had passed. Twilight Sparkle sat reading some assigned reading from Celestia about weather. This would be Twilight’s first winter with wings, so she needed to learn about the precautions she would need to take when flying. She was usually good at focusing on her work, but not today. She was thinking about the way Thunder Lane reacted to the news his cousin had died, “What are you talking about? I don’t have a cousin, let alone one that could break the sound barrier. I mean my family has always had good flyers, but none that good.”
Not only that, all of Ponyville had forgotten the rumor Pinkie spread about Sweetie Belle. Not even Rarity remembered hosting a pony from Manehatten. She was the only one who remembered him, the enigmatic pony. Everypony else’s memories of had him just, melted away.
She looked at the window, Owlowlicious was perched on his perch by the window. “Do you remember him?” Twilight just expects a one word question, but the old Brown Owl was much older than he looked, and even wiser. He turned his head 180 degrees to look out the window. He thinks for a bit. It’s time. He said in his mind. He turned his head back to Twilight who had returned to her book. It’s now, or never.

Chapter 1
Language Barrier
Twilight was half-heartedly reading a book about weather when she heard something fall to the floor. She turns to see Owlowlicious had started pulling books off of the shelves. “What are you doing?” Twilight barked, “I just finished organizing those books. She used her magic to levitate the books back into place, but as soon as she returned to her spot in the center of the library Owlowlicious continued knocking over more books. “What are you doing you stupid bird?” Twilight snapped. In return the old owl threw a book at Twilight’s face. She ducked at the last second. “Ha! You missed!” Owlowlicious raised a single talon as if to say, “Wait for it.” Twilight looked behind her and saw the book had landed on the loud, squeaky floor board, which spooked Spike; he jumped up and ran to the door so fast it spun Twilight around and she landed with her face on the book. “Alright,” she sighed, “You win. What do you need?” Owlowlicious started knocking down what at first she thought were random books, but then realized they were the exact same ones he knocked over last time. Twilight started picking them up, they had absolutely nothing in common with each other. “The History of the Snowflake” “Pony Psychology” “A Collection of Songs From Olden Days” “Simple Physics” “Frankinstallion” “How To See Things” “A Dictionary” and “Decoding”. “What the hay am I supposed to do with these?”
Owlowlicious flew up to the wall and started tapping randomly. What are you…?” she then remembered the last book she picked up and opens it to the ‘Mare’s Code’ chapter.
“Only the first seven are required. The eighth is for communication.”
“Wait, you know Mare’s Code?”
Owlowlicious rolled his eyes and tapped back, “What do you think?”
"That's so cool" Twilight squealed and jumped up and down like a little school filly. "Why haven't you said anything before this?"
"Those questions will be answered eventually young princess" Owlowlicious replied. "However, there is a complication-"
"Complication? What do you mean complication? This is amazing! I have a pet owl who knows Mare's Code!" Twilight said feeling absolutely giddy.
"Precisely." replied Owlowlicious. "Mare's code is a relatively young language, I must inform you of words that do not exist in Mare's Code because they are so old, Coda Mare never translated them." he informed.
