Wake Up!
I felt the heat as I reached atmospheric heights, I couldn't believe I could fly this high, I began soaring around.
"This is so awesome!" I yelled with a strong Australian accent.
All of a sudden my head started spinning and I began to plummet down to the ground... Oh no!
I woke to the sound of a voice, "Do you think he'll be okay?" The voice asked with a worried and familiar tone to it.
"He's been out for nearly four weeks." Another spoke.
I tried to open my eyes, but I couldn't; these voices sounded so familiar. I have to open my eyes! I heard footsteps come from a distance.
"Who's this? What happened to him?" A very familiar voice asked.
The first voice spoke again, "He just came crashing down out of nowhere. He's still pretty weak, but the Doc said he'd be okay."
I felt something flat and warm touch my cheek, I tried getting away from it, I fell out of my bed and landed on a cold, hard floor that smelled clean; I whimpered in pain.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you." she said in a worried voice, as I opened my eyes to look up, I stared at them all in shock.
As I was getting helped up, she had her front leg around me; I tried to speak, "What....happened to me?" She covered my mouth and helped me back into bed.
"You need all the rest you can get, a crash like that takes recovery." She said in a shy and timid voice.
"Where....am I? Who are all of you?" I asked looking at the three who helped me.
"You're in Ponyville Medical Center, you came crashing out of the sky and landed near my house, I brought you here as fast as I could, I'm sorry to have disturbed your sleep." She said nervously.
"What...What's your name?" I asked in pain.
She whispered nervously "I'm...I'm Fluttersh..."
I reached my front leg out and brushed her right cheek.
The first pony spoke calmly "I'm Twilight Spa..."
Another pony interrupted and announced loudly "I'm Pinkie Pie, I've never seen you in Ponyville before, are you new?" She put her face in front of mine and stared at me, smiling wide "’Cause I know everypo..."
Twilight put a hoof over Pinkie's mouth and moved her off to the side of the room then whispered to her, "Could you keep it down? He needs more rest."
I looked at Twilight "I'm...F...Fine..."
I tried getting out of bed, I collapsed and passed out again, only to wake up in bed with Fluttershy pulling the hospital blanket over me; I frowned and looked at her.
Pinkie whispered to Twilight, "He seems really odd to be from around here..."
Twilight whispered back "Yeah...I noticed." Pinkie was about to speak when I interrupted "How long do I have to be in here? I need to stretch my legs…And wings." Twilight called in a nurse with a wheelchair.
Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie helped me into the wheelchair, I looked at Pinkie frowning, Pinkie just looked back at me smiling.
"What's your name?" She asked.
I had to think for a second then I replied "I...I don't remem..." I stopped and looked around nervously. I took some time to reply, then I said confused "I...I don't know it..." I looked down, avoiding eye contact. I then looked up at her, "What happened to me?" I asked.
"You came crashing out of the sky, a tree broke your landing and both your wings, you landed in the lake not far from my house." Fluttershy explained to me.
"What's your name?" Pinkie asked again.
I sighed and said "I don't know" I closed my eyes.
"He did hit his head pretty hard." Fluttershy said to her concerned.
I looked up, "I don't remember anything...Who I am...Where I'm from...I didn't even know I had wings." I stretched them out, cracking as they opened. "Ow!" I closed my wings fast from the pain. "How long was I unconscious?" I asked them all as Twilight walked out.
Twilight was explaining "Nearly three weeks..." When another Pegasus walked out from my hospital room.
"What were you thinking? You could've died trying to fly that high!" I noticed I had burned feathers. "Nopony can fly past the atmosphere." Twilight looked at the Pegasus.
"Who are you?" I asked her.
"I'm Rainbow Dash! Best flyer in all of Equestria!" she answered with a cocky voice. I straightened myself up, meeting her gaze; then I looked away from her nervously.
"I...I wasn't flying..." I looked at Rainbow Dash shaking.
"What were you doing then?" She asked stubbornly,.
"I don't know..." I said cowering a little. Rainbow frowned a bit without her friends noticing, I think she thought she was being a bit hard on me, she walked over to me and looked at me.
I whispered to her "I don't know what I was doing; I'm not sure how to fly either." I looked at her with a helpless gaze. She looked back at me.
"I'll show you how once we get you outta here, kiddo." She whispered back to me. Kiddo, I haven't been called that since I was very young.
A few painful weeks of recovery later, Rainbow Dash was trying to teach me how to fly, I sort of can now. I’m a whole deal better than I was which she said was great progress.
As I walked out of the hospital, I was greeted by Twilight, "Hello, I'm Twilight Sparkle; I’m sorry I couldn't visit you more. I was in Canterlot on royal business from the Princess."
I asked her, a little confused, "What's Canterlot?" She looked at me, I continued "It’s just that I have no idea where I am, who I am and, for that matter, how I got here!" I was worried and confused; I kind of yelled at her, she looked at me nervously smiling. "Sorry!" I said backing down in tone.
"It’s fine, follow me; tell me all you remember." I followed her.
“That’s just it; I still don’t remember a thing.” I said sulking a bit. She took me to her tree house, and as we walked through the door.
"SURPRISE!!!" lots of ponies including Pinkie screamed and jumped out.
"Hi, I'm Pinkie Pie; I threw this party to celebrate your recovery!" She said smiling happily.
"Th...Thanks" I said, startled. She gave me a cupcake, she’s so caring.
"Try it!" She smiled; I took a bite.
"Wow!" I smiled widely, eating the rest of it. I started to think about myself, I don't know who I am, or how I got here; I think I found somepony trustworthy. I was pulled to the center of the room to dance. I just improvised. The lights, the music, it was all so awesome! A few hours of partying and drinking punch, the party was being wrapped up.
I sat down, really tired. Fluttershy sat beside me.
"Hey." She said shyly.
"Hello." I replied smiling. "I need some rest, and I don't have a place to stay." I said, exhausted from the party.
"You can stay here, in my spare bed." Twilight offered, walking over to me, I looked up at her and smiled.
"Thanks." I said cheerfully, standing up. "Okay, where can I sleep?" I asked looking around.
"I have a spare bed up in my bedroom." She said smiling.
I smiled back. I started to follow Twilight when I was hit with a hard force that knocked me into the wall along with the thing that hit me, I ended up face to face with an orange pony with a blonde mane, she had a hat pulled over her face, I nudged her and she stood up fast.
"Sorry there, Sugarcube, I'm Applejack." She said with a strong southern accent.
"H...Hi, I'm...." She helped me up.
"You are?" She said implying to carry on.
"I can't remember my name." I looked down at the ground.
She looked at me. "I'm just gonna call ya Sugarcube, okay?"
I smiled and replied happily. "I'm okay with that. Well, goodnight A.J."
She smiled and laughed “Goodnight!” I followed Twilight to her bedroom; I climbed into my bed and drifted off to sleep.
I woke to a knock on the front door, I opened my eyes and sat up looking at Twilight's bed, she was fast asleep; I climbed out of bed and headed down stairs. I opened the door and looked down at the ground, blinded from the early, warm afternoon sunlight.
I heard a pony say "Oh, sorry darling, I didn't know Twilight had some “company” over...”
I looked up at her, "You must be Rarity." I squinted and looked at her.
She smiled and said, "And you must be the lovely colt Pinkie Pie was telling me about." I smiled and opened my eyes, adjusting to the light.
"Say, you got a jacket or something I can borrow? I'm a little cold...” I said shivering.
She exclaimed excitedly, "Why yes, my dear, right this way!" she started to walk, I trailed her, "I just stitched some fabulous jumpers for the stallions in Canterlot that I think you'll love!" She took me to her shop and gave me a coat; I took it and tried it on, "Perfect fit!" She said jumping up and down happily.
I grinned. "This is comfortable!" I snuggled into it, "Thanks so much. May I have it?" I smiled.
"Sure, Darling, I have plenty of others." She looked at me happily. I smiled at her and looked at the clock 12:07pm.
"Darn it, I'm late!" I exclaimed worriedly, I galloped out of the shop yelling, "See you later, Rarity!" She looked confused.
How could I forget? I have flight trying with Rainbow Dash at 12pm every Wednesday! I started flying as fast as I could. I got to the training grounds but she was nowhere to be seen.
"Rainbow? Are you here?" I yelled, I heard giggling from the clouds above me, so I flew up and saw Dash on one of the clouds.
As she flew off as fast as she could she yelled, "Time for a real test!" She flew straight past me, I flew down to the ground and took off my coat, I then flew as fast as I could, starting to catch up to her. I sped up; flying straight past her breaking the sound barrier, leaving a trail of purple clouds; It. felt. AMAZING! I lost track of Rainbow Dash, everypony ran outside to see what all the commotion was about, I heard a lot of ponies cheering and clapping, Dash was nowhere in sight. I started to circle around to write a signature, I thought of a name for myself as I wrote "Ayer" in the bright, pale blue sky. Ayer is a perfect name for me!
I flew to the ground and landed safely, I galloped along searching for Dash, "Hey Rainbow?" I called out, hoping to find her. I walked up to a rather odd, grey Pegasus "Hello? Have you seen my friend Rainbow Dash?" She looked up at me with crooked eyes.
She replied with a slight lisp, "Yes, I did, she went to Pinkie’s shop, they have delicious muffins there you should try one!" I looked at her and smiled.
"Thank you miss, I will!" I trotted off to the Sugarcube Corner. Just before I entered I stopped dead in my tracks I had a bad feeling in my gut, it felt as if my gut dropped. I noticed a lot of dark, gloomy clouds in the sky; I had a feeling as if something bad is going to happen.
I proceeded into the Sugarcube Corner, still looking for Rainbow Dash. I walked up to the counter and just as I was about to ring the bell, Pinkie came bouncing from out of nowhere.
“Hey Ayer, what can I help you with?” she said happily and excited, still bouncing; “I see you found out your name!” She hugged me and kissed my cheek, “It’s a fun name, like the air in the sky you sail through, which is how it's pronounced!” She giggled. Her breath smelled like cake frosting and marshmallows, it was the best! She was the most amazing pony I had ever met, she's so adorable and just fills every room she enters with happiness and good feelings, I think…No, no I can’t be…Can I? I don’t think… I was interrupted from my thoughts by a few taps on my head, “Hello, Anypony in there?” Pinkie giggled adorably, I looked at her and hugged her tight, shaking, “Ayer, are you okay?” She sounded concerned.
“Yeah…Just a headache, I guess. I think I need a rest.” I replied putting my front leg around her shoulders, she looked concerned. She put her front leg around me.
“I’ll take you up stairs; I have a super comfy bed that you can rest on!” She giggled again; I walked up the stairs getting dizzier still leaning on Pinkie, as we got into her room I collapsed onto the cold floor, a high pitch ringing in my head. I woke up in Pinkie’s bed, with her snuggled into me I couldn't see a thing; hours must have passed since I collapsed. I looked at her, she was sleeping so peacefully. I started to think again. Oh no! I defiantly am. I laid on my back staring into the darkness before falling back to sleep.
I sat up in bed, rubbing my eyes from the sunlight. It must be Thursday morning, I got out of bed and started to go downstairs, I was still a little dizzy. I got to the bottom and almost fell but Pinkie came out of nowhere and stood me up straight.
“Hey Pinkie got anything you need help with?” I asked tiredly.
She replied anxiously “I...Uh, think you need more rest before you can help.”
“No, I can help!” I walked forward shaking a lot, “See, walking by myself again!” I collapsed onto my stomach.
Pinkie giggled and said jokingly, “Nice work, silly!”
She helped me up again, I looked at her adorable smile; It was perfect!
"Pinkie, what happened after I collapsed last night?” I asked, shaking a bit less.
“Well, I put you in my bed cause I didn't want you to sleep on the floor, I checked in on you every hour to make sure you were okay, you were just really tired it seemed, then I tried to sleep on the sofa, but I was too…” She stopped and looked at me, “Please don’t tell my friends…”
I put my front leg around her, “I promise I won’t!”
She continued, “I was too afraid to sleep on the sofa...Because I’m afraid of the dark, so I went upstairs and got into my bed with you, I hoped you wouldn't mind…”
I hugged her, “I woke up and you were cuddling into me, you just looked so…Ah, never mind…”
She looked at me with a cheerful vibe to her face, “Never mind what?”
I looked at her and she hugged me back, “You looked so adorable!” I looked at the ground nervously, “Now I said that it’s gonna be awkward, isn't it?” I frowned, I was still looking at the ground when she kissed me softly on the lips, I kissed her back confused to what was going on, I looked at her and closed my eyes. We both heard the bell of the front door of the shop, we both stopped kissing, trying to act inconspicuous, we hugged then parted ways, she headed upstairs to her room and I headed to the door. It was Mr. and Mrs. Cake back from a catering drop.
“H...Hello...Mr. and M...Mrs. Cake, I…I’ll be going now…” I greeted them nervously and dashed out the door. I thought to myself, I should go see Applejack and see if she has any work for me. I galloped as fast as I could to Sweet Apple Acres.
“Hey A.J, have you got anything you need help with?” I asked looking at her bucking apple trees.
“Hey Sugarcube, I guess you could help me harvest some apples!” She replied pleased with the offer.
“How do I do it? If you don’t mind me asking…” I glanced at her, eager to learn.
“Well first, you stand in front of the tree like so, get ready then you shift your weight to your hind legs and kick the tree as hard as you can.” She explained cheerily. I stood in front of another tree, I shifted my weight to my back legs, then I kicked as hard as I could, shaking the tree causing several apples to fall from the tree, one hitting me on top of the head.
“Ow!” I exclaimed, rubbing my head.
Applejack laughed a little, “Sorry Sugarcube, I forgot to warn you ‘bout that!” She said giggling; she trotted over to me and rubbed my head.
“Thanks!” I said sarcastically with a smile; she met my smile.
“Wanna hang out later once I finish apple buckin’?” She asked smiling wide.
“Uh, sure, I don’t think I’m doing anything I’ll see…” I was interrupted by screaming, somepony calling for help it sounded like...No; it can’t be! I flew as fast as I could to find the pony in peril, with Applejack trailing close behind; they were outside the Sugarcube Corner which was completely engulfed in bright, burning flames. I searched the quickly growing crowd hoping to find her, she was nowhere to be found, I ran for the door Applejack tried to follow but just as I got in the door a rafter from the roof collapsed, blocking the door disallowing A.J entrance with me, I galloped upstairs as fast as I could, I flew to Pinkie’s door and tried to open it, it wouldn't budge. I remembered what Applejack taught me so I turned around, shifted my weight to my back legs and kicked the door right off its hinges; thanks to her I got in.
I peered around the smoke covered room, starting to choke from it, I got down on my stomach and saw Pinkie lying on the floor next to her bed, her mane was charred and her coat was badly burned. I crawled over to her, picked her up and stood up, cradling her; she was unconscious. I started to fly still holding her tight, I smashed her bedroom window and flew out just as it exploded, launching Pinkie and I a short distance; the explosion also showered the crowd in debris, who began to scatter in fear. The Sugarcube Corner came crashing down as the crowd ran for their lives, Pinkie and I were lying in the glass and debris; I slipped into unconsciousness while cradling Pinkie as tight as I could.
I recovered consciousness in my same hospital bed from months ago only to hear the most horrible words in entire the world, it felt as though I was shot through the heart by a thousand bullets.
“Pinkamena Diane Pie has passed away.” I woke up in my hospital bed screaming and crying in the ICU. I got out of bed, and as I started to walk, I felt really dizzy; I was having some sort of flashback. It was dark, cold, everything was echoed and slowed down.
“We need assistance, I found two survivors a young colt and a young mare, the colt has a raised pulse and 2nd degree burns, but as for the mare there, she has no pulse, starting CPR!”
Everything sped up, I heard loud noises and a very high pitch and eerie noise, “Okay, 1 2 3. CLEAR!” I saw three ponies standing around Pinkie, two colts and a mare, the mare kept counting to 3 and yelling “Clear!” after she said “Clear!” the two colts would charge their horns and put them up to her chest shocking her, after the third try the mare exclaimed with a stiff tone.
“She’s stable take her to the ICU, as for the colt I’ll escort him myself, I know him.” She said teary eyed, “Who is he?” One of the colts asked, the mare sighed “He’s my…”
I woke up in my hospital bed it looked as though nothing had happened; apart from my burns. I heard the heart rate monitor BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! It beeped every second. I looked around for the button to call the nurse, I pressed it. A few seconds later a nurse came through the door.
“Morning Mr.?” She said asking for my name.
“Born, Ayer Born.” I said coughing, I saw X-rays on the wall of what appeared to be a broken front leg, I looked at my legs, and my right leg was in a cast, signed by my new Ponyville friends.
The nurse was about to speak but I asked concerned, “Where’s the mare I came in with, Pinkie Pie, where is she?” I was starting to tear up.
The nurse replied, “Room 206, she’s been in a coma for a week now, you just recovered from yours. It seems your heroic actions came with a cost.”
I looked at her and asked stuttering, “I…I was in a...a coma?” She nodded, “Hey, I need to stretch my legs and wings, mind if I go for a stroll?” I asked sadly.
“Yeah, sure.” She smiled. I got out of bed shaking, then I started to walk towards the door, as I walked out the door, I heard a very familiar voice.
“Ayer?” She said with cheeriness and hope in her voice, I turned around and saw a dark grey coated mare with, a light grey almost white mane that looked so familiar like I knew her from somewhere.
“Y…Yeah?” I asked, she galloped up to me and hugged me very tight, “I missed you so much; I feared you were dead, I searched all of Fillydelphia for you; you've been gone for about four years now, why didn't you tell me you moved?” She started to cry, I hugged her back. I was trying to remember who she was.
“I didn't move here…” I started to explain “I woke up in a hospital bed they said I was in a coma for a month…I don’t remember anything before that, they said I hit my head pretty hard.“ I continued.
She interrupted “So you don’t remember me?” She said frowning.
“I sort of do, I just can’t remember your name or who are to me.” I said sadly.
She hugged me tighter, “Well, I’m Sky Born, I’m your sister!” She said smiling with dry eyes.
“I have a sister?” I smiled wide then hugged her ignoring the pain in my leg. “Hey you wanna come visit my friend?” I asked sadly.
She looked at me and asked, “What happened to you?”
I replied, “I ran into a burning shop to save something I hold very dear to me.”
She giggled and we started walking to room 206, “Typical Ayer risking his life for things, just like when we were kids!” She laughed a bit and I smiled, as we arrived at the closed door of room 206, Sky asked jokingly, “What was it this time? Did somepony hide your teddy again?” I looked at her sadly and opened the door.
“No…” I pointed to Pinkie, “Her.” Sky’s jaw dropped as she saw the pink pony lying in the hospital bed, she walked into the room and trotted up to the side of Pinkie’s bed, I went to the other side of the bed.
Sky looked at me in shock and asked, “You ran into a burning building and you saved this young mare’s life?” I smiled and kissed Pinkie on the forehead the taste of burned hair fill my mouth, but I didn't care, Sky was still looking at me in shock.
“Sky I don’t know what to do, or how to go about it, but I care about her so much, I almost died in that fire; I know she would’ve if it wasn’t for me.” I blurted out, pondering the thought of that night, Sky rubbed Pinkie’s hoof.
“Any friend of my brother’s is a friend of mine!” She said to Pinkie, just as the other five friends walked in.
Rarity was the first to speak, “Ayer, darling, you didn’t tell me you had such a perfect friend!” Sky blushed.
“Hello, I’m Sky Born, Ayer’s sister; it’s nice to meet you all."
Rarity spoke again, “I’m Rarity it’s a pleasure meeting you!”
Then A.J spoke, “I’m Applejack!”
Rainbow Dash flew up and landed in front of Sky, “I’m Rainbow Dash, best flyer in all of Equestria!” Fluttershy didn’t speak; Twilight shook hooves with Sky and introduced herself.
“I’m Twilight Sparkle.” They all then gathered around Pinkie’s hospital bed, all teary eyed. They all looked at me and each of them hugged me.
“Thank you so much for that heroic move, nopony would have had the guts to do what you did, we all thank you so much for saving our best friend.” Twilight said starting to tear up even more, I hugged her and Sky. I suddenly felt really dizzy everything slowed down then it all went dark again. I woke up in a hospital bed that was being wheeled down the corridor, nurses and surgeons were all around me, “We need to prep him for surgery right away!” Another spoke, “He has internal bleeding, and a possible punctured lung.” Everything faded out.
I woke up in a field of flowers; I looked around and yelled, “Hello?” It echoed. I heard an angelic voice that sounded a lot like Pinkie; I looked around more, running to the sound of her voice, “Pinkie?” I yelled.
“Right this way!” She said, everything still echoing. I started to fly towards the voice; I found her standing next to a bright, white light, like her eyes, the light was as bright as the sun.
“We can be together for eternity in here!” She exclaimed with an echoed voice.
“No! This isn't real!” I told myself.
I heard an echoed, distant voice, “Clear!” It said. I felt a sharp pain in my ribs, like I was punched. “Clear!” another sharp pain, I closed my eyes and begged for the pain to stop, I started being pulled the opposite way of the light, I grabbed Pinkie’s hooves as I went past, everything went really bright and I woke up in a surgery room with several stitches in my side. A nurse came through the door and walked up to the doctor beside me.
“Some news from room 206. The Doctor says Ms. Pie is still in her coma, she’s unresponsive, but she’s in a stable condition.” I was moved back to my room, I won’t be able to move around, I have to stay in bed, I was just lying there with my eyes closed, falling asleep when I felt something wet and warm touch my cheek I opened my eyes and saw Pinkie kissing me on the cheek, I wrapped my front legs around her and hugged her as tight as I could, she hugged me back, all of a sudden she was covered in blood, I opened my eyes and looked at the blood covered mare.
She gazed into my soul with dark staring eyes, “I’m here to take you away Ayer!” She screamed demonically, she stared at me laughing psychotically. I woke up in my hospital bed; I was having nightmares again, terrible ones at that. I looked around the room and climbed out of bed, the pain in my side was unbearable, thoughts of the nightmare haunting me. I fell to the floor cradling myself, hoping for it to be over soon, and in the blink of an eye, everything disappeared. I opened my eyes and stood up, planning on heading to Pinkie’s hospital room, my sister came into my room.
“Hey Ayer, how are you feeling?” She asked concerned.
“I feel a lot better now, can you take me to go see her; I need to check on her!” I said sadly.
“I’m sorry Ayer, you have to rest; I’ll help you get back into bed.” She said plastering a smile on her face.
“No, I have to see her!” I yelled as I galloped out the door and up the corridor to Pinkie’s room, the pain in my side almost overpowering my consciousness, Sky was galloping behind me. I ran into the room and bucked the door closed. I ran to Pinkie and hugged her tight, “Wake up!” I screamed, “Wake up!” I started tearing up, “Please wake up…” I fell to the ground in tears, I can’t take it anymore. Sky smashed through the door and ran up to me, she hugged me as tight as she could trying not to cry.
“I know she means a lot to you Ayer.” She said cradling me, running her hoof though my mane.
“She means more than a lot to me, I think I'm in love with her. I just need somepony to tell me she’ll get out of this alive, I need to know.” I cried out. Will she ever wake up?
