“Cadence, why’d we have to go to the doctor?” Shining whined pathetically as she looked around the office they were sitting in. After their doctor, Twinkleshine, had gotten past the fact that the royal couple had switched genders and that Shining might be pregnant, she had been able to keep a straight face all throughout the examinations.

“I didn’t want anypony, much less our usual doctor, to find out about all of… this!” Shining gestured at the two of them. “Why didn’t you just cast a pregnancy test spell on me between the private walls of our private bedroom?”

“I already told you, remember?” Cadence said, giving the trembling mare a nuzzle on her cheek. “I’m not taking any chances with casting magic on you if you truly are pregnant. These conventional examinations are the safest way we can have you tested, and I thought it would be a good idea to see if you’re carrying now rather than wait and see a few months down the line.”

“I… I guess that makes sense…” Shining shifted a little closer to her stallion, laying her head on his shoulder. “Ugh... How much longer is this going to take, dear? You’d think the doc would be done al–” She was cut off when small door to the room opened, revealing a light green mare wearing a long white coat. Shining sat up straight and gulped, her eyes following the doctor’s every movement.

“Hey, you two, sorry I took so long. I wanted to double and triple check everything just to be sure,” Twinkleshine said as she took her place on the sole remaining cushion in the room, eliciting a worried glance between the other two. She laid a folder down before them and cleared her throat. “While these rather unusual circumstances are quite… for lack of a better term, unusual, Shining is in perfect health…”

“Phew!” Shining visibly relaxed, letting her shoulders slump. She wiped her brow clear of her sweat and giggled in relief. “Heh, I thought you were going to tell us something neither of us wanted to hear!” Her smile faltered when she noticed the rather unenthusiastic look on the doctor’s face. “Uhhh… Doc?” She gulped loudly and she felt her heart speed up as she got nervous. “You just said that I was in perfect health! What’s wrong?”

The doctor took a few seconds to gather her thoughts. “Well… Yes, I did say that you are in perfect health. You are one hundred percent a mare, through and through, and well…” She bit her lip as she trailed off. She opened the folder and pulled out a single sheet of parchment, laying it between them. “When I ran your examination, the results showed that you are, in fact, not pregnant, but you’re due to go into heat any day now.”

Back in the royal bedchambers, Shining was pacing back and forth in the living room as she tried to sort out her thoughts. The fact that she wasn't pregnant raised many questions. Why didn't the spell work when Cadence had tried to switch them back to their original genders? Were they going to be stuck like this? What if they couldn't fix this problem before she had to face what was to come? Though relieved that she wasn’t pregnant, she was still worried about what was coming. Based on the past few times that Cadence had gone into heat, Shining knew that going into her own estrus cycle would be no small matter, and to top it all off, the doctor had said that it would happen to her really soon. Even if that came to pass, though, Shining knew Cadence would have her back.

“Shining, dear, can you please stop pacing back and forth?” Cadence asked from his position on the couch. “You’re gonna wear a track into the rug.”
